Bob Crane proved in this scene that he could do drama. Too bad he was murdered as he could have had a career resurgence in the 80's. He would have been great on Hill Street Blues, St Elsewhere, or many of the Prime Time Soaps of the era.

Bob Crane was a very gifted radio personality, musician and actor. His addiction to porn in the 1970's was lethal to his career and personal life. Fast forward 20 years and we see that 25% of all internet sites are porn sites and are easily accessible. To those addicted to porn, seek help fast ..it is an addiction that is destructive to relationships and the soul.

Uncanny? Or the script writers making a point? Apparently he was none too bashful about sharing his lifestyle, which was why Disney canned him from what would have been stellar, post Hogan, career. He used to take photo albums onto the set and show naked ladies to his fellow cast and crew. So everyone knew about his, “sex addiction,” issues. The Love Boat was actually a scheme, created by its producer, to find work for actors who’s careers were fading for whatever reason. It’s a veritable Who’s Who of people who used to be famous. The downside of that was that the show became known as, “The Life Raft,” in the show biz world. So, appearing on it had the opposite effect of reviving careers and became a way of identifying actors who were on hard times, desperate for work and not too picky about what they got. It was more likely to kill careers than revive them. That must have Bob Crane’s last acting appearance on TV?

I remember this episode. Crane didn't age too well. He was 48 here and when he died. Hugh Hefner died at 91 and looked better than Crane did at 48. Can't believe Crane was married at 19 too. My friends and I were amazed he never contract HIV which was on the rise in 1978. Surprised he never went back to radio. Talk radio was making a comeback in 1978 or become a sessions musician--he was damn good drummer.

AIDS epidemic exploded during the 1980s. It was still small or unreported in 1978. It would've been unlikely Bob Crane caught HIV in 1978. But with no knowledge of people spreading it, Crane's was playing Russian Roulette with an added bullet in the chamber every year he kept his lifestyle up. No doubt he would've been a casualty if he stuck around.

Since he died in 1978, there was no real time to contract HIV. Other STDs, yes, who knows? Bob was going through a bad divorce, but he still looks good. He wasn't wrinkly at all. The bouffant hairstyle was popular at the time, though it didn't flatter anyone.

Second, the actress here was in her early 30s, Crane was in his late 40s, way too young to be her father. Gavin MacLeod was a guest on Hogan's Heroes several times, so he likely got Crane this role as a favor.

He was supposed to be a good guy. Yes, unfaithful but temptation is not easy to resist. AND he liked women and loved sex but that does not mean he was a bad guy.

His addiction was women & sex. The adventure of hunting and never knowing what's next.
It was not about porn that much or just about the recordings and watching them.
There is several stars that have done worse things, that were covered up by guys like Ed Mannix then and remain a secret.
Stuff like the killing of Ted Healy by other society people, for example.
Crane was neither a pedophile nor is there indication, he ever forced or raped someone. Also it seems he did not even break many hearts, meaning he obviously did not make lied fake promises to his casual sex ladys.
His addiction was only self-destructive and of course affected his family, but basically that's it.
By the way ... using 1960s and 1970s cameras and trying to film secretly with them sounds quite ridiculous to me. Actually accusing Crane of doing this, is a laugh.
Filming back then was not done with pocket size smartphones, you know ... plus they were making a bit noise probably.
Whoever said, she didn't know she was filmed, was maybe just ignoring it or probably just lied in order to give a better impression of herself.

Thank you; good post, I agree. Times were different back then, no internet meant such adult pleasure was not considered as devious as today. Still, it was tawdry and hurt his family, though he suffered most of all, as to his career, but most likely with his life. I think perhaps some of his conquests, not all, were "professionals".

didn't his killer get found not guilty in court?

    • @neilouellette3004

Yes. John Henry Carpenter, Sales Manager at Sony Electronics who Crane befriended a few years earlier. He went to trial but was found not guilty. At that time the Scottsdale Arizona Police Dept. didn't have a Homicide Dept.. A lot of evidence was mishandled and lost before the trial making the prosecutors case very weak. Even years later when DNA testing came about, the samples were so tainted that they were inconclusive. Years after the trial many believed it was Crane's common law Patricia Olson, who was the only recipient of his said will. His will was rewritten a year earlier that left all of his children without. Something to think about.

@@neilouellette3004 Wow, thanks . I did see a video with Arizona media and his son after I watched this because I haven't thought about this case in years. It appears this man may have actually been innocent. Who know? I think it is horrible his kids got nothing, maybe the common law did pay someone to do this.
