Fantastic advice! To build on these ideas, regarding selling children’s items, be sure to have sellers liability insurance. I used to sell children’s items but when my insurance provider found out, they wanted to charge me a 5k premium because of the choking and suffocation risks in the garment industry. So proceed with caution. Having said that, your video gives excellent ideas! I can’t wait to create some complimentary products for my line!
Yes, so true. It’s always a good idea to check rules and regulations for wherever you are in the world. And to use common sense to make your items safe, or indeed choose another niche if you’re unsure.
I like the idea of knitting baby things to sell on Etsy, but aren't there strict laws about selling in the US that make it risky or too much hassle? Please let me know of what you have heard on this?
Hi Chelle, I’m in the UK so it’s a good idea to check the rules that are closer to you. When I was selling baby items I did stress tests and wrote down how I did fastenings and seams, so it was all done first and then it was repeated. These may be necessary where you are or not.
Thanks Cara! It's a gorgeous bauble, I agree, they make great Christmas presents. It's not mine, though I will be creating some Christmassy patterns for next year, so stay tuned!
yes, I've seen Christmas decorations sell very well. I can't change the volume on this video, but it's possibly due to download speed and the fact that I don't have a professional studio as I'm filming in my living room. There may be slight background noise that I can't remove. If you up the volume to its highest option it should be fine. Thanks for watching! happy knitting. :D
Yes certainly, Great question! I've tended to stay away from anything that might be thought of as a toy when knitting - even if you sell them as keepsakes. As the stitches aren't as stable as crochet, the stuffing might leak and in many countries around the world there are rules around toys. I went through strength tests when actually sewing dolls to sell. I was hanging weights from a giraffes tail and a doll's hair plait! And most regulations want you to also create labels for them too. I know they sell, but that's why I didn't mention them in this video - the baby clothes have less stringent rules in most places (and are less likely to have stuffing and extra attachments). Happy knitting!
If you want to start small, then I'd let your family and friends know to see if they'd be interested. Starting small is a great way to build up interest and spread the message you can add a Facebook page or instagram account later. Happy knitting!

We’ll hats and blankets sell
Great! Happy knitting 🧶
I don't understand how you could actually make money knitting and selling dishcloths. They don't sell for much considering how much time is involved.
