Ashwin Willemse was never a quota player. He was incredibly talented and sadly had his career cut short by injury. Your commentary is mumbled rubbish. Mallet never called him a quota player. Please - don't make up facts.
He was a quota presenter. That’s what initiated this issue. He was so many levels below Nick and Nass in his preparation, knowledge, and ability to analyze and comment on games. This got to him and eventually resulted in his walking off set and using the race card as an excuse for poor performance.
Yup, this is something I think he failed to realize. Nevermind Nick n Naas as players; they're both experience as rugby coaches whereas Ashwin is just a retired player and he failed to realize this himself. I bet some others were talking into his ears making his mind up for him though
During the games in studio Naas and Nick would sit watching the game, discussing each moment and putting together clips for their commentary. Ashwin didn't do that. He went to eat or chatted or did other things. There was never any racism from any of them. They were too busy WORKING. Ashwin walked out because he was not prepared, as usual, and he was embarrassed, so he blamed racism. If one guy in an office doesn't do his part of the work, the others will slowly push him aside and work together to get things done. It had nothing to do with race, but rather with incompetence and laziness.
Mallet never called him a quota player. You're wrong. A very thorough investigation failed to find ANYTHING against Mallet or Botha or ANY other person.
Well done! That's the very definition of "quota"... it's right there in the name....that's the point I'm making, with a quota system you can never say you were good enough, which hurts players of colour. PS, I can't stand Willie Le Roux, he should never have played in either World Cup. 2019 or 2023. He's a cheerleader at best. I'm vocal in my opposition to Willie too..
Aswin was lazy & entitled - he was in the Springbok team on merit but is an example of everything that is wrong with SA. It's called chip on the shoulder syndrome - too many in this country suffer from it - he forgot how to roll up his sleeves.
It was based on merit whatever but he was told he was quota player even after everything he did and what he accomplished. That's what's getting him and now for them to tell him he's a quota presenter after everything. These things are personal and you can try to seperate sport from our past but that's not our reality yet. Lazy and entitled is probably the most ridiculous thing to call someone with a past like Ashwin's.
Quotas are gone. Half the team is non white and 1/3 is ethnic black. And rassie over the past 8 years, never showed any prejudice. If you were good enough, you were in. So - stop - your - bitching.
I notice the white SA seem to rubbish the black players as just quota players yet very rarely go on about some of their average white players SA would be nothing without the blacks or coloured they're their best players Am,Kolbe etc.Whites saying quota players is basically like saying you don't like blacks but don't have the balls to come out with it directly
I've been saying what I've been saying for years, and this is where it played out before our eyes... "The quota system will continue to call into question whether ANY and EVERY player of colour deserves their position in a team or not".. until every player is chosen on merit and there is NO QUOTA SYSTEM, because until then no player of colour will ever feel that he 100% deserves his position and the sport fraternity will always have their favourite player in that position who they feel should have got the nod ahead of the POC. And whether their perception is right or wrong, the quota system will ALWAYS do more damage to the POC who is selected than it does to promote and equalize the playing field. That is evidenced by the Ashwin incident. I feel desperately sorry for these players because we have many POCs that deserve every cap they get, but while the quota system is in place, the doubt will ALWAYS exist and be in the back of everyone's mind. It's very sad, but it is in my opinion NOT a good strategy at university, franchise and national level. We've had 29 years to get it right at grass-roots level and we would now have been enjoying the fruits of that strategy, but it's been a dismal failure and the administrators of SARU are directly to blame.
Imagine someone like Rudolf Straeuli with no quota system. Imagine Brain Habana without a Chester Williams. White people especially like moving the goal post when it come to these conversations. In 1992 Uli Schmidt confidently said that blacks people cant play rugby - this dude was not only a rugby player but an educated medical doctor and. Leader at the Blue Bulls academy. This is one example of many reasons why quota are needed to jump start transformation.
@@alastairaspara4554 Correct, but at grass roots level, and you've had 30x years to get it right so that we don't need it at Provincial or National level and can confidently say all players are there on merit. Until then, my point carries and has no reasonable counter argument. Just facts. White people don't move the goal posts, the goal is everyone has an equal opportunity to be selected on merit. So tilt the scales in favour of POC at schools and the rest will take care of itself. Anything else will never achieve the goals.
He was a good player but a quota presenter. What he always did was talk last and all he did every game was repeat exactly what Nick said. He had no opinions of his own and bought nothing original to the show. He undermined himself.
Willimse had one good year in 2003. After that he didn't deserve to be in the bok set-up again. He got injured in 2004 and never got back to his 03 level. The mere fact that he went to the 2007 world cup instead of a merit based player was purely political.
We don’t know the facts of the case. I will say that this man speaking here spoke very well. Well done. This man represents the future of our country and I am prepared to walk the road in my country to enjoy a population of people like this.

My personal view is that Ashwin Willemse was a great player but the "quota player" label clearly irked him. He was however a very poor presenter as from my understanding, he did very little prep work prior to coming on air and I had heard rumours that the other presenters often had to do his prep work for him and they got tired of doing so. Naas Botha and Nick Mallet not only played at the highest level but Nick Mallet even coached the Boks! How many teams did Ashwin coach at the highest level? The Answer is none. He got caught out and played the Race card to bail him out of his shortcomings in Presenting. Race card is too easy to play against White people but is never considered against people of other races. Sad ending to this saga!

What ever the discrepancy, you have to remember you are on a public platform, he clearly took advantage of it! He should have used tact and wisdom to handle a sensitive issue like this on a closed hearing session. Sad he abused the privilege afforded to him. JMO
I'm just gonna say this now as a coloured guy, also a follower of south african bodybuilding and martial arts: huge white guys and black guys are the strongest in our country: so black n white forwards mostly will be a team built on merit; now although we have had white sprinters in the country, those who've had the best success are people of colour. Then we have to factor in how certain positions are played also: the white guys kick the best most of the time; you have to have an agile, strategic flyhalf come on now. . . the other positions? Meh And then scrum half is a very specific set of skills you have to have as well. So a team on merit. . . . could be exactly like what we had in Japan
I understand the quota system. The truth is we would never have had so many amazing black players playing for the boks if it was not mandatory. We have always had so much black talent but the powers that be have been forced to find and use that talent because of the quota system. If it wasn't for quotas the team would have been mostly white from affluent rugby schools. On the other hand when do we stop the whole quota system? When has it served it's purpose?
And here I thought the EFF could make up kak, this guy is just repeating the same lines and they have background music that tries to make it interesting. Eventually, it boiled over in an unfortunate setting. As for Naas and Nick, I say with all due respect very subtle remarks can hurt big time, no matter how innocent it may be to you as an individual. Remarks should not be made at all in that setup. I always maintain there are nice ways and not-so-nice ways to say things if you do not agree with the other party. Naas and Nick might have innocently expressed their views less sensitive but for Ash unfortunately it was the last straw. As an example:" You do not know what you are talking about" Why not rather say " I hear you but must disagree because.......'
I personally think the whole Quota needs to be abolished, it only undermines people of color, because whats happening now is when a player of color gets into the team most people probably have a slight inclination that his there because his black.
