What climbs would you like to see Feather tackle on this bike?
Something around the rim of Lake Tahoe, California or Pike's Peak in Colorado. Possibly a descent for the latter as well. Manon being in Boulder leaves me wanting more west coast.
San Francisco hill ride would also be great.
He doesn’t have Cheddar Gorge Olly, Get him down there👍
ALL OF THEM!!
some of the climbs in the Peake district
I would love to see some coverage of Feather's training plans and tips. Maybe even a series where he trains a non-pro for a HC race.
Yep, it would be great to see him train an amateur like Ed Laverack
We'll see what we can do!
@@cat.astrophe2080 You are right, technically I am an amateur ;)
@@gcntech Please do. Give us proper volume and intensity and rest information. Off season, peak season and off periods as well.
Just followed Ollie's advice and watched Natural Born Climber on GCN+. Feather is inspiring on a whole new level - and another wonderful hour on entertainment from GCN. Thank you for the amazing content
When Ollie said Andrew takes his bottle cage off for hill climbs. Made me think. When Andrew rode up the mountain on the main GCN channel. Why did he have a bottle cage and yellow Tour de France water bottle. I'm not even sure there are an parts "flat" enough to take a drink.
It's funny that he still does a lots of rides on that old rim brake Cannondale SuperSix that was presented here, earlier. Just check his Strava account...
My 9 years old Canyon weighs 6.5 kilos. Rim brakes of course :)
does your 9 years old bike have a bb386 botton bracket?
@@cassiowiemes I don't know. It's a pressfit bracket though and Dura-Ace components.
I have the same bike (assuming it’s an Ultimate CF SLX) but mine’s about 7.2kg in race build.
Like all Canyon road bikes, it uses a pressfit 86 bottom bracket.
@@rosscads I don't know why yours is heavier. My frame size is XS. Even on Canyon website for M size frame, weight was indicated as 6.5 kg. It was delivered to me in Spring of 2013.
@@marekkozub89576.5kg without the pedals and bottle cages… thats how it’s put on the website.
Can we have a series where Ollie does the national hill climb champs again, like he did in a previous job but an in depth look at all the tech he would use! 🤓
would rather have bartape than discbrakes
Thanks Ollie and crew
What a fitting last name.
Think Ollie should borrow this bike for another go at the climb 👍
I think he is way to soft mentally to do anything
Not sure it would help-Ollie needs an lightweight mtb with a 51 tooth on it if he stands any chance at getting up that climb
When you manhandle a bicycle off the pedals, break rub becomes and issue irrespective of how stiff a rim can be (deep sections are stiffer). That might explain disk brakes (and lack of bartape).
I have the bluetooth module, but I keep it off the bike. Super easy for setup via the app, but it drains the battery. I always unplug the rear derailler cable and put it in between there for doing config or updates. Then I disconnect it when I go riding. Only downside: on your head unit you can see the active gear if you keep the module in. Without it - offcourse - that's not working.
That’s clever! Must change mine to this configuration. 💡
Yeah I do the same with mine i got a short di2 cable so I can just daisychain it in to the rear mech.
Why would a KOM bike have disc brakes?
Because disc brakes are better at doing their job than rim brakes.
His real hill climb bike and KOM bike is an older Gen2 Cannondale SuperSix Evo High Mod with eeBrakes (rim). I'm sure he doesn't ride it in GCN videos as Cannondale is not a GCN sponsor not to mention it's an older discontinued frameset.
Good to know I have lighter bottle cages than Andrew Feather 😝
I noticed not only is his bike equipped with the proper size handlebar for his shoulder width, but also what looks to be about 30mm of headset spacers and a tall top cap underneath the stem.
Apparently, Andrew understands that in order to make consistently high power output, the bike must properly fit the rider. I remember reading that decades ago in Greg LeMond’s book. Greg also wrote “If you want to get strong on the bike, head for the hills.”
All good advice. Don’t slam your stem unless it’s actually necessary for a proper fit within your own physical parameters, or you might actually be slowing yourself down. Handlebars narrower than your AC to AC measurement? Are you a sprint specialist on a world tour team?
Looking at the seat post, a model without setback would have been more elegant and lighter (and safer to clamp the saddle rails). Also this stem, I use this myself but it's certainly not a weight weenie item.
I didn't know people choose setback based on elegance. I thought it had more to do with preferred body position.
@@larrylem3582 What you say, and a seat post *with* setback (supposedly) provides more vertical compliance (i.e., comfort). Here, however, the saddle is clamped maximally in the back, so a 0-setback seat post would provide safer clamping (and IMHO look better, esthetically). But I guess no such seat post was available for this "build".
Bar tape doesn’t weigh 200g 😂😂 it weighs 60
By GCN's standards, anything that's not carbon is overweight.
The handlebar itself weighs 200G 😂
@@jiggamanjnu1on1 exactly lmao. My handlebar even weighs 180g. Ollie must be running some seriously heavy bar tape
Yeah, my thoughts too, 200 g bar tape is bonkers.
@@jiggamanjnu1on1 That's a Schmolke handlebar. In a size 42, that weighs about 145g
That’s a climbing bike in the same way that I’m Tadej Pogačar.
What is the handlebar on it? Schmolke?
Superbike for a super climber..enough said..!
It would be lighter with rim brakes
and no gears
@@truthseeker8483 Surely you mean 1x gear.
😍🙌🏻
How's the bike standing upright?
When are you sending Feather up Bamford Clough?
Crikey how much does that Union Jack sticker weigh - can he really afford the extra weight?
And here I am happy that I got my bike down to 10.2 kg with new wheels and tyres...
What bike is it
You would think a GCN presenter would get his valves lined up properly for a bike vault photo 🤣🤣🤣
How about riding this on a 10-52 SRAM eagle cassette? That would be a lot better than a 44t. Can Feather do this with SRAM eagle?
Looks well. Disks aside. We need this GCN countdown to rim brake deletion blown up. Still cannot get my head around Feather chosen road discipline is riding up inclines. You couldn’t write it.
What handlebars are those?
@UCx3zr1blPKmKYrAna84MJrA awesome, thanks. Feather must be made of money.
7:55 Just out of curiosity, in the USA, all rear brakes legally must be on the right handle bar. Is it a free for all everywhere else or is this bike left rear because they drive on the left?
Germany, Italy and the UK (and probably some others) used to have the front brake on the right hand like you would on a motorcycle. It seems to be falling out of fashion a bit though.
All brakes in Europe are left-back and right-front
In the UK, its's right for the front brake, left for the rear. As you say, because we ride on the left hand side of the road.
@@loc9588 Brakes for most European countries are right brake for the rear, left for the front.
I'm pretty sure there is nothing in the California Vehicle Code that says a bicycle rear brake lever must be on the right-hand side of the handlebar.
No bar tape to save weight but has disk brakes... makes sense! 🤔😀
It’s his bike he can do whatever he fucking want with it
What goes up, must come down ;-)
@@11-inch mind your language, sir! It's not your channel so that you can talk however you want to 🙂
Yeah because gcn are using him as a prop to market their sponsor bikes. His bike of choice is supersix that weighs like 5.5kg. Always annoys me when athletes like feather are used as a marketing prop for overpriced bikes with gimmicks like disc brakes
What's the point in bar tape if he's on the hoods most of the time
Why is your rear brake lever on the left side?
1. Standard setup in many countries.
2. ALL motorcycles have front brake on the right - so for those of us who ride both it makes sense to be consistent.
3. Front brake most powerful, and most of us are right handed so best hand on the brake that needs the most finesse.
Rotors and deep rims for climbs? That's nonsense.

@@loc9588 word dude
1:40 - I'm trying to decide if Ollie is flattering his smile or depreciating his skills. Is he a high wattage smiler or is a low wattage cyclist?
He does have a nice smile.
I would love to own a bike so light, might feel so good on climbs. Only issue for me is that I don't really weigh that much, and sometimes even with my current bike which is like around 9kg, I get easily blown around in strong head/cross winds and it can be a bit scary when going at high speeds.
you can get a rim brake
You can get something lighter and better quality if you buy a high end older bike.
Feather is such an animal, I bet he could get those KOMs on foot.
KOM stands for King of Mountain btw... In case im wondering
Interesting, Phil Gammon is using a 5.6 kg Factor Vam for KOM hunting, and he has bartape.
SLR or CFR? Hmmm
A light bartape weigh only 40 grams.
Why do I find it interesting that UK and US riders have controls reveresed from each other?? Is this actually standard? In the US bikes come with rear brake/shifter on the right side. Is it standard for UK bikes to have rear brake/shifter on the left??
A high-performance rider deserves a high-performance bike, so I got no knock on any of the exotica. Except, honestly, discs on a climbing bike for a gent named Feather? It's really freakin' me out.
There was another video from Bike radar with Mr. Feather's bike last year if I'm not mistaken. It was a Cannondale supersix (may be evo mod) and it had the ee rim brakes.
@@vyas555 Bikes are made for every discipline imaginable and I admire the hill-climbing prowess and sport in England, definitely one of their things on bicycles. So why not a dedicated rim-brake hillclimber every bit as high tech as a TT or track bike or whatever. But no, we're all told that discs have to be on every road bike imaginable and that is just bogus, nothing wrong with modern rim-brakes for people who like to huff and puff up big climbs and be the king or queen of the hill.
@@robbchastain3036 I love rim brakes. I'm a rim brake guy. Disc brakes are a marketing thing. There are a quite few different interviews of team mechanics in tour de france and they all confess that the disc brake is a push from manufacturers. A nice carbon wheel with a aluminium track for braking will be more than enough for most people. The biggest turn off with disc brakes are constant rubbing and maintenance (brake fluid bleeding). I love my 105 rim brake.
@@vyas555 Constant rubbing and bleeding are a myth created by rim brake old farts.

We had the Brick now we have the Twig!
What's the fascination with weight? My old kinesis aithein I got to 6kg was slower uphill than my 8kg scott foil
Why? Maybe tires?
Easy answer: Because you failed to put out the same power during both runs, you lost some weight yourself, other weather conditions, different wheels, water bottle, group ride, or you just don’t know what you’re talking about
@@Thomasvdd9123 not entirely true. It could be that the two bikes are very different geometry and one just “wants to go” (the heavier one” and the other bike has relaxed non aggressive geometry. Those things make a difference
@@loc9588 yes it can make a little difference as well. But a bike 2kg heavier should never come on top first when doing a hillclimb…

I'm not anti disc brake. I have both and am just a below average weekend warrior but for someone of Andrew's calibre, he really ought to have a rim brake bike for specialising in climbing
Dr. Bridgewood needs to learn that earning a Ph.D. entitles you to spend whatever you feel you want to on your bike. I promise this has been peer reviewed and is accepted science.
I don't see too many conti 5000s from the crew at gcn megabase.
I wonder why
GCN is sponsored by Perelli - so they use Perelli tires.
His old Cannondale was much nicer in my opinion.
Needless to Say that Feather was using up to 2 years ago a custom changed cannondale with rim brakes whose weight was 5.4 kgs
He still uses his 5.39kg Cannondale SuperSix Evo Hi Mod and won the National Hill Climb Championships with it.
@@animalgarden825 yeah I've seen the climbing Hill champ, and I was surprised to see that he still used the customized cannondale, so probably this Is more and advertisment video for the CFR.
The Cfr Is awesome though, if there was a rim version It would be easily below 6kg.
The grandma of the CFR was the ultimate 10 evo that with 22mm tyres and rim brake was around 5.4 if I Rememmber well.
3:19 Wow! that's some freakish climbing speed there. He NEEDS brakes to stop uphill?
Heck, just put your foot down, if you can unclip without falling. Pretty hard to do on such a steep grade.
@@davidadamus177 All jokes aside I learnt that the hard way, falling while climbing a steep hill, coming to a full stop, and NO time to unclip, it was EMBARRASSING!
Discs on a lightweight climbing bike 🤔
Nobody who uses disc brake on a “climbing bike” is that serious about being fast on a climb. Switch to rim and it would be a 5.3kg bike.
I think Andrew Feather is a probably more serious about climbing than 99.9% of rim brake users.
@@lezc3733 right, so why isn’t he using rim? His bike clearly isn’t needed to be UCI legal so why not get the extra-1kg advantage?
@@lezc3733 this is a training bike. He uses rim brakes when competiting not disc
@@reginaldscot165 Look at his Strava, the guy holds just about every KOM in the country, and he did Salita Scanuppia (worlds steepest climb) on a pretty much standard Pinarello Greville disc, he does use rim brakes occasionally when he's KOM hunting, but the fact is, he just doesn't need to.

saving 200g on a 6.7kg bike plus a 65 kg rider - is there really any point to this? thats ~72kg vs 71.8 kg..... pooping before start might have a bigger impact :D
How about saving all unnecessary weight and also do the pooping&pissing. It's marginal gains, but if that margin is what leads to winning then it made all the difference.

I wonder, what are Andrew's thoughts for Canyon in comparison with old Cannodale Supersix?
They won’t let him say I bet, the supersix is a whole kilo lighter
I think Cannondale is not one of the regular sponsors to GCN, so the answer would be obvious.
