Most of my budgies don't like fruit and don't eat it. But I found a way to trick them. I squashed some berries, mixed in millet and put that in their treat dish with lettuce underneath, letting it poke out a bit so they see the green. It worked.

My budgies had babies last year. And I have to say, those babies make my life better. Other than falling in the fish tank, they help their mom learn more about my room. Learning that it's good to try new things.

Great topic! My birds eat Harrison's pallets. Love broccoli. And eat fruit once a week. Millet almost every day. The more we know about budgies diets the better for our birds. Thank you for doing these videos!

This is one of the best Budgie diets I have seen. .. nevertheless it doesn't mimic the budgies natural diet. Budgies come from the Australian dry lands. When not destroyed by humans overgrazing, these areas are grassland. The main thing budgies eat are a variety of grasses and plants that grow with grasses such as dandelion, amaranth, clover, alfalfa, mustard, purslane, carrot tops. Micro greens are highly nutritious. These green plants hydrate the budgies with structured water ( more hydrating than simple water). This is really important for creatures that fly and particularly in dry lands. Provide copious amounts of grasses and green leafy vegetables. They then nibble slight amounts from trees such as dry gum leaves and flowers. The third thing they eat is seeds when the grass plants are in seed. This is not all year and not even every day. Giving budgies a variety of seeds is convenient but they need to be limited ( 1 tsp / Budgie / day) because they are highly inflammatory by being high in lectins and omega 6 and omega 9. It's better to sprout some of the seeds. Budgies eat a small amount of bugs. The bugs can be replaced with a thin slice of boiled egg fed once a week ( more often if feeding chicks). The Australian Bush has very few sweet fruiting plants and they only appear for a few days once a year. . Fructose, found in fruit, in large amounts is a toxin for budgies because it causes fatty liver, weight gain and insulin resistance. In general avoid sweet fruit, nightshade plants, root vegetables ( including the carrot root, the onion family, potatoes) because budgies are not digging creatures . These plants can be used sparingly as medicines in extreme circumstances but never as general foods. What I am recommending is similar to the above except green plants are at the bottom of the pyramid by volume, then seeds. Then egg. Sweet fruit is avoided ( only offered if Budgie has suffered extreme cold or celebration treat). I have left out the tree substances because it's hard to obtain safe varieties.

it all depends on how big the feeder is, and how many bird you got, if you are asking about veggies, leave them for couple of hours and then remove them from the cage before they start to rot

You mentioned that you can buy sprouted seeds. This is the only thing my budgie does not get as I am at a loss as how or where to get this? Also, what do you think of the "gourmet" seed mixes that have dried fruits in them? yes or no? My budgie eats tons of greens (kale being her favorite) but is not so keen on fruits. Eats a blended mix of seeds and has cuttle bone and mineral block which I finally see her using lately.

I need help, my brothers co-worker gifted a Budgie to him and she kinda mentioned that the budgie is 5 years old. I am the one that is taking care of the budgie now and I'm concern that he might be depressed or sick. He closes his eyes and puffs up, not sure if he is tired or sick. I have seen him eat but not drink water. Can anyone please let me know if it's just because of his age or if it's an illness, BTW I dont have a veterinarian yet since it was in so short notice, the budgie was given to me today.

    • @budgieyy

Put clean paper on the bottom of the cage and check the poop in the morning. Know the temperature budgies require, make sure there are no drafts where the cage is placed. If you have a food scale, weigh the Budgie, I think 32-34g is the standard weight. Budgies require about 12 hours sleep at night. He/she may just be adjusting to a new home as it would be stressful for any animal.

Every Saturday I mix a hard boiled egg one spinach leaf with carrots seeds and pellets mixed in a chop we take fresh frozen vegetable mix and we blend it in a bullet while still leaving big chunks of the vegetables and we mix the veggie mush with pellets and seeds then we freeze it in our freezers when they are ready to eat we take small paper bowls and I balance it on the cage and a small perch from our previous cage we keep pellets and seeds in their food bowls throughout the day I spoil with millet whenever we have fruit platter I give them one of every fruit to try depending on what it is we have 5 baby budgies I plan on getting more their wings are clipped because we got them from a pet store the previous cage they were in was a tall I didn't give them a practice flight cage I put them in a flight cage directly after to help build their muscles I even shut my room door and take them out daily I let them explore when I first put them in they fell a couple times but now they are doing great they have only been in this cage for a month and they do get their exercise we have something at the bottom of the cage to catch them Squeaky can actually glide he was able to in the other cage too Stolas can as well the other 3 they can't fly yet I am working with them .
