At long last a glorious return to our Full Farb Review of "The Patriot!" And this time, I have a forty-five minute video about a scene that only lasts about five minutes or so. Believe it or not, I actually cut out a lot from this one- I easily could have gone over an hour if I went very nitpicky here, but some of those things are going to be covered in future content, so I wanted to save it!

There's an interview on UA-cam by FilmSpeak of Jason Isaacs talking about how there was a guy from the Smithsonian always at hand. Isaacs eventually asked him "what the f&#* are you doing here?!" since the filmmakers never followed his advice. He replied something along the lines of... "I think they just wanted to say that a guy from the Smithsonian worked on the film"

As bad as stormtroopers are, they're still leaps and bounds ahead of rebel troops (i.e. non main characters).
Stormtroopers aren’t as bad as many think, lore wise. I’d like the assume that Stormtroopers are about as well trained as a normal infantryman from our world. It doesn’t help that stormtroopers were exaggerated.

Wtf is this complaint? A man realizes war has come to his door step whether he likes it or not and takes up arms for the cause with his family. Does something about that sound weird to you? You may be brain dead then.

The natives learnt to fear the steel of redcoat bayonet charges during the French and Indian War. For Darth Mel to run in with two short range weapons and single handedly massacre a bunch of redcoats with fixed bayonets is beyond comical.
As a Foxhole player, I confirm there is nothing more terrifying in close quarters than a bunch of soldiers with fixed bayonets.

These redcoats behave like the "attackers" do in McDojo fake self-defense courses, where a knife attacker, instead of taking out the knife in the last moment and pressing it to your body before you even realized that you're being mugged, just takes out the knife a long distance from you, raises it high in the air, then starts running towards you in slow motion while keeping the knife raised high, so that when he arrives you can easily grab his arm and throw him to the ground.
You mentioned so many times it doesn't make any sense to have veteran soldiers getting mauled like this that you ended up unlocking a memory of mine: the movie explains that Benjamin's strategy is to kill the officers first to disorientate the other soldiers. So, basically, whenever the officers are killed, the rest of soldiers magically seems to forget how to fight properly.
Because, seemingly, the British army don't have something called "protocols". Like: "what to do when X happens?"
War tactics famously never included protocol for what to do if the upper command is dead
@@SpiffoGaming The Patriot is really awkward because it's actually a completely mixed bag, it's very accurate and realistic but also extremely unrealistic and bafflingly ridiculous at other points and it slides back and forth between the two seemingly at random. The ambush was pretty well done though all things considered. There's 3 of them, they have about 5-6 guns between them from what I remember (it's been years), they couldn't have really done anything differently given the parameters. The thrown tomahawk headshot though was bollocks, that thing has travel time, a few degrees of movement on either of the heads after it's left it's hand and it ends up in the wrong head.
The Brits were following Robert Rogers Ranger rule No 1 " Don't forget nothing " ( eh ? ) and so they forgot everything . This was possibly due to George Washington having all the British drill manuals . Ha ha this will stop them !
Where were the other soldiers ? They had been ordered to ' sit there and drink tea " ( Robert Redford - ' A Bridge Too Far '...another horrendous POS - it was General Gavins fault having spent all day shelling an invisible enemy in a nearby forest and not taking the Bridge priority no 1 ,as ordered I.e. the objective ) .
In combat I don't actually recall giving two shits about the officers. It was the NCOs running things anyway.

Gibson is that bandit in Skyrim who just magically sidesteps your sneak attack arrow for no known reason.
No, Skyrim bandits are too stupid for that. A better comparison would be Gibson being almost like the Dovahkiin, since he/she can clear an entire fort of bandits alone. Realistically, the Dragonborn would be captured and ransomed or killed trying to do this, all they have to do is tackle him to the ground.

This reminds me of of a story that my great grandfather told my dad.
He said that he was sitting under a tree next to the entrance of his village. Underneath him was the main road and on that road a German convoy was coming. Left of the convoy was a long potato field and at the other side was another village. Somebody from that village takes a shot at the convoy, and my great grandfather said what he witnessed after that was something that he never seen in his life.
How the Germans without uttering a single word between one another got out of their trucks and moved as a single unit towards where they thought they heard the gunshot. The speed and the coordination was something beautiful to him. Now they never caught the person who took the shot, but my great grandfather said if he was the man shooting that he would be running to the hills the moment the first German soldier boots hit the ground.
But alas dear viewer we never had a Benjamin Martin there 😉.
first rule of ambushing a superior force. speed is your friend. fire and dissapear before the enemy has a chans to get whats going on. your great grandfathers story is a good example. why you don´t want to have a long firefight. even a not that experienced unit would know what to do.
This scene is basically a d&d fight where the players cheat with their rolls and the DM does not notice as he's too busy fudging the rolls of the npcs

I’d further conjecture they’re possible survivors of Endor, given how easily they die to pint-sized threats…once you realize that the Patriot is just Mel Gibson’s version of Star Wars everything will make more sense
Man, don't even get me started on how inept Star Wars can be in its own portrayal of villains or a cohesive story...
At least there were hundreds of Ewoks and a dozen or so veteran soldiers on Endor. The stormtroopers were morons in the fight but at least they had some excuse. This would be like if only Leia and the two droids wiped out all the stormtroopers
It would be fun for a soldier to break down how easily Luke, Han and Chewie get to the prison cells, escape the guards, then conveniently exit via unguarded, unfilmed corridor.

While Battlefront 2 started as a horrible game, the Ewok game mode is genius for taking the Ewok meme and establishing them as the Star Wars equivalent of the Viet Cong...and just as scary.
I have to say that ironically this makes the colonials look worse, since when you think of it from a logical stand point on what makes your main characters look stronger, if they beat a competent force thru a combination of surprise and skill in a carefully done ambush, or they beat a bunch of "soldiers" so incompetent they might as well be shooting paper targets for the effort it takes to beat the enemy.
To me this doesn't show the colonials as strong and mighty (which was the most likely intention) only the Brits as laughably weak and beating weaker opponent does not make one mighty. Now if the redcoats had used the proper tactics even if poorly executed and the ambushers didn't have aim hacks turned on it would make for a much more compelling scene, you could even make the rest of the British force act as timer to add to the tension (something like "we need to get this done before the rest of them get here").
That was not the intention. the movie hammers home the idea that most of the Colonials can't fight well. Its just Benjamin Martin is a massive war hero and he single handedly wins the war in the South.
@@MrChickennugget360 I know what intentions of the movie were I've seen it, however even that would have been better served if the brits were more competent, a hero is after all only as good as villains he fights and by depicting the brits this incompetent it doesn't show Benjamin Martin as this badass war hero, but rather this incompetent moron who only won because his enemies were even more incompetent then he was and I doubt that was the intention of the makers of this movie.
Before someone bring the battledroids from SW prequels it's a different matter as those are pathetic on purpose and do not in fact serve as main villains of the piece (that would be the Sith) but rather the Trade Federation and later the CIS serve as distraction for the true enemy. On the other hand the Brits are the true and only enemy of the Patriot and there's no Phantom Menace (pun intended) pulling the strings behind the scenes. This is why the Battledroids still work in their intended role for Star Wars while the Redcoats in Patriot fail at their intended narrative role.
I would like to point out the battle droids were atleast scary enough to defeat non-jedi main characters in episode 1 (they chase padme out a window despite her and her guards fighting back, and defeat the gun guns easily). Which is more than any other star wars minor badges, and most action movie bad gies.
I actually buy Jar Jar wiping out a whole platoon with the power of slapstick more than Mary Sue Martin and his psycho kids wiping them out.

Thanks for being the guy that defends the British military tactics in videos like these. We don't need to discuss the moral, religious or Imperial reasons for these battles/wars, but getting just a little bit of respect, after being pooped on in so many American films, is a little relief :)

I have a little game I play with myself, whenever on a flight (or at a pub, or in the UK) I find myself talking to someone from the UK, I will casually start a timer on my phone. The longest I've ever been able to converse with someone from the UK before they start insulting the US is 1:40, and that man was quite the gentleman, I assure you.

It's all about just being nice. People can be too personal and that can ruin great relationships before they even begin.
I remember when Luna Oi initially made a response video to the Armchair Historians video on “the Vietnam wars from the north Vietnamese perspective.” She claimed was was full of shite, he commented on it saying he appreciated the feedback and tried to start that friendly appreciation of criticism.
And then she made ANOTHER video responding to a goddang UA-cam comment, calling him all sorts of stuff of pushing western propaganda and it went all down hill from there.
Just an example of how bad this kind of thing can go so it’s even cooler their friends.

What you’re describing in part 2 is endemic to basically any sort of propaganda. The enemy is simultaneously incapable and dimwitted, and also a horrific threat that seeks to destroy the viewer’s very way of life. The goal isn’t to maintain a constant vision of the enemy, but to demonstrate the foci of the propaganda are a legitimate, yet surpassable, threat.
Like the N*zi’s portrayal of the Jews (or any minority they intend to persecute)

Ironically, Gibson managed to unite the English, Irish, Scots and Welsh with their hatred of Braveheart what with it making a mockery of all their history and cultures.
English-bashing is fine if you do it well. For example Zulu Dawn does a fantastic job by simply telling the truth; Britain declared war on the Zulu Nation out of greed, and got themselves slaughtered by treating the Zulus as primitive savages.
Meanwhile Braveheart and the Patriot made stuff up. Like the church burning scene in the Patriot, the British never did that... And the concept of First Night (Prima nocta) in Braveheart is total bollocks.
And of course, Braveheart was the name given to Robert the Bruce; not William Wallace.

@@hallu4696 Except they don't do they? I have had people inform me that Prima Nocta was actually a thing, when it was not, it was made up. Braveheart and Patriot are worthless, gutless garbage directed at a demographic for whom actual thought is an anathema.
Hell, William Wallace was not a random peasant, he was a fucking nobleman, which meant even HAD Prima Nocta existed (which it did not), his bride would have been exempt. He most certainly never met, let alone fucked a French Princess, and I will not even go into the number of inaccuracies when it came to weapons and armour which are legion!
The problem with the masses is they tend to be stupid and historically inept. It's why there are so many myths, like M4 Shermans being Death Traps (when they had the lowest casualty rate of any WWII tank of any army except the Churchills), or the Lions led by Donkeys myth of WWI and don't even get me STARTED on that one if you do not want a book length answer. And those are just immediate historical 'facts' that are in reality myths that spring to mind this second... even as I type I have thought of more.....
Both films were essentially about Brit, more specifically English bashing. Because thats fucking easy, rather than showing the real nuances of the period its just easier to bash the Brits....
Now generally I do not mind bashing the English, as I am a Welshman... but I reserve it for us, not the rest of you fucks. Americans tend to like to forget they had an Empire... not a large one, and they did not call it an Empire, but as the saying goes, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then its probably a fucking duck and not a swan!!!!
@@alganhar1 well yes I suppose if you’re of the masses you wouldn’t know but considering the channel we’re on I don’t think most people here count as that at least in regards to knowledge of historical accuracy. as for you not liking Americans bashing on England we don’t bash on them for their empire but rather for the nature of their relationship with us when we were a colony up into the early 1800’s but even if that wasn’t the case our “empire” wasn’t similar to theirs except in the case of the Philippines because when we took land we weren’t just utilizing it for resources and strategic positioning but for additional living space
We should have a better version of The Patriot that’s historically accurate, well written, and well acted. Why not call it “The Loyalist”

You know what, I think that would be a really cool film. We have a lot of films from the revolutionary perspective, why not from the loyalist perspective?

"The Bias"
Yeah, I think it would be good to have better films from any perspective really.
You know, I was just thinking. If these British soldiers are green, then the natural thing to do would be to look/hide in cover and protect themselves regardless of their officer's orders. (Especially since the officers were the first ones killed). This is what some British soldiers , and most of the colonials tried to do at the Defeat of Braddock's column in the French and Indian War. If they were veterans, they would have either attacked the enemy in the woods at the point of the bayonet, or more likely, they would have formed an appropriate formation and started to shoot back to the best of their abilities/training. But since they did none of these, they are clearly Hollywood soldiers and not real soldiers.
I'd say, at that distance, they would have formed loose ranks facing left directly in the order of march, the first rank kneeling and firing, the second then moving through, kneel and fire while the first reloads, then present points and charge through the, by then, probably quite dense smoke.
I like that "Hollywood soldiers are not real soldiers".
Another great idea would be to hide behind the wagons.
Wagon forts where quite common during the musket era, because they worked. But, even just a single wagon would be very useful in protecting soldiers from enemy fire.
Almost like your surprised that modern actors don't behave like 18th century enlisted men on a battlefield 🤣
@@reiverraider4887 It is not the actors but the director/producers that are telling them what to do. What should be done for movies like this is what Gettysburg (1993) did. Namely, let reenactors play the roles.
The sketch is absolutely glorious, you and Atun Shei could make a perfect team. The "tell me about Ohio" bit made me shoot budweiser out my nose. And I don't even drink Budweiser.
Solved it. This unit was a “special” forces unit, in the British language tradition of positive worded derogative terms. On hearing of this companies demise the rest of the army sighed a breath of relief. 🤦♂️🤷♂️🤣😂

That only present one side of an argument.
The column was marching with fixed bayonets already and seemingly loaded muskets, they start taking fire from a flank. Immediately finding themselves caught out in an exposed kill zone. How about instead of just standing in an exposed position in an unequal gun fight, just fire off a volley and charge? Even a junior NCO would've been able to quickly surmise this is a bad position to be in.
Take away the initiative, of your enemy. One of the first things I learnt as a soldier.
I mean true or figure out where the opponent is and take care in the opposing woods so your not just standing there. Or use the damn wagons since it would be clear all the shots are from one side. I mean I would think charging uphill into a potential volley of shots even with a bayonet would be a really bad idea.
@@TheLastSane1 in modern conflict yes almost certainly suicide but in the 1700's this would mean the yanks get 1 shot away before being caught in hand to hand combat with trained English soldiers and they would most likely meet their end at the tip of a bayonet or slice from a saber and if not it prevents the enemy from having you in a kill zone with no cover for the brits and full cover and height advantage for the yanks. Another overlooked thing is that the Americans would know they couldn't win that fight (especially a melee) due to the numerical supremacy of the redcoats and would likely turn and run perhaps not due to cowardice but due to knowing when a fight isn't winnable and that a hit and run ambush would be more effective a lot like the north Vietnamese would use against the Americans in the 60's and 70's.
2 reasons the US back woods is alot thicker than you think and woods not cleared out with very uneven terrain. Their best choice is fall back into cover in the stream behind them and provide cover fire so a team can work their way into a flanking position.
@@cohort075 the thing a learned is speed of violence.
What makes this scene about ten times as cursed is that, at it's most basic, bare-bones level... the concept behind this ambush is actually quite well done (probably because they stole it from Last of the Mohicans, which for all it's flaws was the vastly superior film). And thus the complete and utter bungling of the entire scene is elevated from painful to complete torture.
Think about it: You find out where the convoy is going. Not that hard if you know the area. You move ahead of the convoy and prepare the battleground, placing pre-loaded guns so that you can quickly move from gun to gun without being seen. Thus, you enable a good volume of firepower given limited firepower while minimizing your own visibility and exposure.
Sure, you would optimally use traps (Ye Olde IEDs, anyone?) and conduct the ambush in a far more densely wooded area, to provide more cover to yourself and your movements, to say nothing of conducting multiple of these ambushes on a small scale so that you don't have to kill the whole company in one fight.
But that's somewhat besides the point. That point being: the barest conceptual idea behind the ambush is not only realistic, it's actually pretty damn good.
And then we get this utterly heretical abomination of a scene.
Why, O God Emperor of Mankind? WHY???
The premise behind the video was regarding that poor response of the redcoats in the ambush scene, and that it indicated a frightening lack of effort by the makers of the film to even present the redcoats as an actual viable threat. Poor writing and poor acting warrants sharp criticism and rebukes.
@@tr4480 Well, this too. Very much so. I mean, even a pretty damn good ambush would have trouble if the Redcoats were actually competant.
Though, it should be said that the execution of the ambush was also pretty damn incompetent. Plot armor and Star Wars Stormtrooper level opponents are the only reason the ambush succeeded.
But, yeah. I get what you mean.

@@surprisedchar2458 Also it’s possible that those men were just recovering from being sick or witnessed the aftermath of acts that irregular forces had done and are disturbed enough that they are unable to act as one would expect.

I wish the movie "THE PARTIOT " was more military realistic and had military advisers who knew the time period .

militarily speaking the movie actually gets a lot correct:
-The American soldiers carry Charleville (French) muskets (in other productions both before and since they get brown besses or even worse, prop guns...),
-the British uniforms actually look right whereas so many more recent productions, like the horrifying "Sons of Liberty" and even TURN get little details wrong that make everything seem off (if you watch the special features on the dvd/blu-ray the costume designer even says she knows they had different facings for different regiments, but that her budget didn't allow that level of detail).
-The linear tactics demonstrated in the film are accurate to the time period, though not to the southern campaign itself (which ironically often saw Cornwallis fighting in open order with skirmish lines and his American counter-parts holding close ranks...).
-heck, they even got it right that cannon balls dont explode and that they bounce (now the cannons themselves look weird, but oh well).
All of these reasons are why I actually like the Patriot, because it LOOKS authentic. the plot is fiction, but the material culture is spot on. Not even the history channel managed that (referring to that sad series from two years ago on Washington)
they did have advisors. reenacts down here in the south, and some people involved with southern department of the continental line. they didn't listen to the advisors. people in my unit and other units down here always talk about how they didn't listen to the advisors.

I am a Brit and like all of these idiotic representations of our armed forces it denigrates the actual effort made by the revolutionaries in winning their independence. If the bloody French hadn't been keeping us a bit more constrained in terms of our commitment, it might have been a different outcome. However I think it all work out quite well in the end. What a brilliant nation the U.S has developed into , with a solid foundation of friendship between our nations.
Brandon, I have say this man, I forgot to tell you this when we met at Old Fort Niagara. I have to thank you for your videos because they helped me keep historical accuracy and authenticity when I wrote my first book, The Forgone War. I am currently working on the sequel to the story. Without your knowledge and you giving great videos about history, I wouldn't have been able to write my books. You going into great detail is so darn amazing. I feel that it would actually make a cooler scene if Mel told one of his daughters to notify a nearby milita about what happened and their plan to save her brother.
That actually would make a pretty cool scene of with the milita firing ragged volleys into the British convoy. while the British fire back in equally ragged volleys.
The point of the scene was to demonstrate to the audience that just under the surface of Benjamin Martin is a crazed ruthless berserking killer. One way they could have made this more realistic is to just have the son escorted away by a smaller group while the majority forces march to the next spot to do more damage. The Brits having conquered the region could have felt more secure about it and only send out a small detachment to bring in a prisoner. Also consider that even the best militaries in the world make some asinine blunders. Look at how the USA handled Afghanistan for 18 years.

It really is a shame that this was the last significant big-budget blockbuster film Hollywood made about the revolutionary war. It had great production values but the movie was just so awful it defied belief. I really wish someone would make another movie about this period just to take attention away from this trash.
Honestly, I'd prefer Hollywood stay as far away from history as they can get nine times out of ten. Better to have people not know about history than have false visions of it- I think the wrong idea is far more damaging than the lack of ideas!
@@BrandonF Understandable, but it is possible for hollywood to make great historical epic films that make an impact lasting throughout the ages. We got one for the Civil War (Gettysburg), we got plenty for WW2. Heck we've even got one for the French and Indian War (Last of the Mohicans). The revolutionary war deserves one too. There's been a couple of decent low budget films, like "The Crossing" and "April Morning". But nothing on the scale of say "Saving Private Ryan". That's what I'd like to see.
I definitely agree with you in principle, though I'd hard disagree on Gettysburg and mostly on April Morning.
@@BrandonF I get it. Most people seem to think the movie "Waterloo" was a masterpiece, but I didn't like it. Gettysburg will always hold a special place in my heart though. The all-star cast, the thousands of actual re-enactors they got to bring the movie to life, the amazing battle scenes. To me it's just the textbook example of what a war movie should be, despite its inaccuracies and omissions (which are mainly due to it being based more on a novel than on real history, which Last of the Mohicans also suffers from)
I always thought they didn't execute the Joker because they were sending him back to headquarters for interrogation. I also in my mind explained how the British thought Gibsoon was just a good Samaritan civilian and said in front of him you take this prisoner back to _____ with a squad(when did squad as a military concept arise?)
In fact my mental fan fiction has the Evil Colonel firing by instinct and then being surprised and saddened that he had killed a child, but that would mean he wouldn't be a complete monster.
Additionally I guess we could have had one of the officers Mel killed be a relative of Evil Officer Antagonist(EOA) who had just arrived in country with fresh unblooded troops and he was sent back by his relative, EOA, because EOA was worried about him and then when Mel ambushed and slaughtered those fresh replacements it would push EOA into being more brutal.
But again that would make EOA into a complex character instead of a complete monster while making Mel a complex character instead of a saint.
I live in South Carolina and have always enjoyed studying about its history. The thing that has always bothered me about this movie is that there are plenty of real life stories from the revolution that would have much better movies if told as they actually happened without having to make stuff over the top like this movie did.

Despite the claims that the English descend from anglo saxon migration, there is very little evidence of that. There is a lot of missing evidence that you would expect based on other germanic migration into France, Spain and Italy.
There is much more evidence of Norse takeover of England, and we know that was located only to a few regions and most mostly conquest rather than migration. And that was not just limited to England but also scotland, ireland and wales.
The Patriot is an entertaining movie but the way it portrays Americans as morally-centered arbiters of good and British as cartoonishly evil (and blunderingly incompetent) seems propagandistic at best. I have to wonder if modern British people find this movie offensive.
Yeah, we don't like this movie. If it was about something real, we wouldn't mind, but making up atrocities like burning churches, that's crossing the line.
The second officer to go was the one who previously thanks gibson. I liked the touch that he was not a cartoon villain and visibly troubled by what happened and still got popped.

the southern setting is refreshing, after being hammered with how wonderful Washington was up north. The southern campaign is so neglected.
Also, one big part: the Spanish also got involved in the war and were very important in the southern theatre.
@@Winaska The potential is wasted when only a few real parts of the campaign are shown and they are in a terrible form.
Don't forget the neglect of the role of Native Americans in the Revolutionary War as they helped both the British and Rebels.
I think that scene does a lot of things right: It knows its target audience wants a lighthearted power fantasy. This is balanced out by gruesome detail enough to feel real to them and they do not care about history. A more competent enemy would have undermined the power fantasy. I personaly prefere historical wars to be taken more serious than completely made up fantasy (unless It is made clear that the movie does not take itself serious) but I am not the target audience for this movie.
i think you hit the nail on the head. That is the difference between War Drama and Action movies.
War Drama are about the harshness of war and what it does to society and the men who fight wars. Above all else they aim for authenticity and complexity.
Action Movies are about power fantasy. They normally have heroes mowing down hoards of nameless faceless drones until they get the boss fight where the Hero has to go all out and typically beat the boss in a final key act.
The Patriot is just an action movie set within a vague historic context.
The fact that Ben Martin and Tavington have a vendetta and boss fight is not the real issue- its that the background misrepresents the War for Independence.
The movie repeats a lot of popular tropes about the Revolution that are false but widely believed:
British Soldiers always fought in tight ranks and could not exercise initiative. (No British Light Troops are depicted even though they were critical in the Southern Campaign)
American Troops could not hold their own in open combat against the British (the movie show American Regulars running the moment the battle gets hard) in reality by this stage of the War American Regulars were more than capable of holding their own in combat with the British Army. Normally defeat was the result of poor generalship or because they were working with militia that ran away
All troops wear the same types of uniforms (all British Redcoats wear the same kind of Red Uniform even though many variations of the Red Coat were in use, furthermore the US Army never standardized on Blue as depicted in the movie and in fact war a mix of blue, brown, green or white (and others as well)
The chief hardships of the time period are not depicted- desires, hunger and lack of money.

One thing I hate about the Patriot, and alot of movies in general, is that the British Soldiers are identical.
In reality, some companies, and regiments had different color garments, breeches, some even had different color coats, like the Hessian regiments, the 42nd wore kilts, and other highland regiments wore tartan pants, and some even wore green, like the Kings Royal Regiment Of New York.
And im not an S.J.W but, why are there no african regiments in this movie, besides Occam in the background, it would have been cool to see the 1st Rhode Island or another regiment like that.
In this movie they look like stormtroopers and I despise it, and frankly, they aim like them too.
And the Continentals get the same treatment, everyone wears blue, with red facings (I think that's what they're called, if im wrong please correct me.).
When in reality, up until 1778, there was no standardized uniform, and even when there was, the men wore a myriad of clothing.
Off the top of my head: The 1st New Hamsphire wore green, along with the Marines, the 3rd New Jersey wore white, and the 26th Continental Rgt. wore brown.
And it would have been an excellent plot device to show how futile the rebel cause was, if they couldn't afford to standardize the uniforms.
And on a sidenote, It would have been cool to see Grenadier companies, and Light Infantry companies that made up British Regiments.
Like for example, the light company fires while the main regiment moves, or at the big final battle, the Regiments advance with their grenadiers at the front, to hold against any counter charges, or any surprises that might arise.
When I was in the 54th I had quite a few people ask me if my uniform was inaccurate, because the "British coats were all red and blue, not green"
the costume designer for the movie was interviewed for the special features on the dvd and she came right out and said that she knew diffrent regiments had different facings, but her budget didnt allow for that level of detail. Loylaists wore green, and im almost certain there were not hessians with Cornwallis at the time the movie takes place. Although the absence of grenadiers and light infantry is unfortuante.

besides budget restraints it could also have a psychological reason.
Like storm-troopers the British aren't depicted as people, but as a faceless mass of enemy one can shoot into with impunity without moral concerns. It weighs quite harder on the audience, knowing that behind any unrecognizable guy in red is a story, that ends with a fist sized hole in his chest.

I would love to see you dedicate a video to an analysis of Tavington as a villain. To me, from a writing perspective he was, although at times pantomimic and veering into caricature, one of the better aspects of a terrible movie. He seemed more capable than any of the officers around him (not saying much I realise, as this particular video as so beautifully illustrated) and most of the time his tactics seemed sound enough. I always saw events more from his perspective than Gibson's, and before the whole Nazi church burning farce it was very much 50/50 on which side were the real villains of the piece...though I'm not sure this was the film's intention. Anyway, I do think it would make for a compelling video, particularly given the furore surrounding the character vs. the actual officer he was based on.
Tavington’s problem is that he’s only competent when the film needs him to be. Brandon touched upon it a bit in one of his previous videos.
Also of course he’s a cartoon character.
But yeah Jason Isaacs is still really entertaining to watch at least.

I do see what you mean, in the sense that he's a genuine threat in the fight with Gabriel then miraculously forgets how to use a sabre when he has Mel Gibson at his mercy. He seems a reasonably sound (but rash) tactician most of the time, then gets outwitted by two children when he's searching Charlotte's property. I know a lot of people find him cartoonish and veering into a pantomime villain, and he does have his moments in that territory, but I think with better writing he could have been genuinely iconic, even amidst the unholy mess that constitutes the rest of the film. And yes, Jason Isaacs is always fun to watch. I miss him in his campy evil roles - had a good trilogy with Tavington, Malfoy and Captain Hook back in the late 90s/2000s.

On an unrelated note, at the very least they get that aspect of Bloody Ban right. Tarleton (Aka Tavington here bcus reasons??) was known for being extremely reckless and aggressive. I recently completed a dissertation on the effectiveness of militia forces and Tarleton shows up a LOT.
For starters, he's really frickin' young. Tavington looks to be in his late 30s, Tarleton joined the war at like 22 and that would make him 26 at the time the patriot is set.
After the battle of Camden, instead of burning down the nearest plantation house like Tavington does, Tarleton spots some of Thomas Sumpter's patriot militia bois and chases them for MILES. By doing so, he gets a fair amount of his people killed for comparatively little gain.
Then, a few months later, when he hears that another British commander is getting attacked at King's mountain, he writes a petulant letter to Cornwallis demanding he send someone to help but refuses to go himself because he's sick. (He would later claim that he was not sick and Cornwallis denied him because... idk reasons) Needless to say, no relief force was sent and the other guy was brutally killed and his body used as a communal public toilet by the patriots.
A few months after THAT, when he hears that Daniel Morgan's army is around, he immediately charges it with basically no second thought. He sends a message to Cornwallis asking him to move up behind Morgan, which Cornwallis denies. Tavington completely ignores him and assumes that he is doing so (we know he received the letter because otherwise we wouldn't have the letter) and attacks Morgan on basically no sleep with his army exhausted. Assuming that the enemy would crumble like they did at Camden, he marches straight towards them without any serious tactical considerations because "The militia sux"
Now in the film, this gets Tavington killed, but in the actual battle of Cowpens, Tarleton gets a few moments to shout "WHY ARE YOU RUNNING AWAY" at his terrified cavalry after the entire infantry gets double-enveloped and then hacked at by William Washington (allegedly) before he himself has to bail out.
@@moritamikamikara3879He loved being a dragoon because he was all about that Leeroy Jenkins lifetime. To be fair, King's Mountain wasn't his fault- his men were EXHAUSTED. He had the problem of having his forces go double time 75% of the time Stonewall Jackson style, so they got little to no sleep. On one hand, he got surprise and he did win battles that way- on the other hand, the men would basically be unconcious on the march. That eventually undid him at Cowpens when the British, having executed a charge only to be counterattacked, promptly just collapsed from sheer exhaustion.
They never held it against him, though- when his horse was shot at Waxhaws and fell on top of him, they promptly went on a bayonet revenge spree until he calmed them down.
Very much the Custer of the British Army in America. Eventually he met a Sitting Bull.

The stereotype of British soldiers standing in the open exchanging fire with the enemy when it's not necessary , strikes again
14:00 Those things happened sometimes with Spanish ambushes over French supply columns during the Peninsular war. However, there were some key differences: those ambushes were made by groups that either were actual military forces or had prior military training (due to being former Spanish soldiers) or were being trained and advised by Spanish officers, had local knowledge of the terrain and, most important of all, massed enough men to have local numeric superiority. So a Spanish ambush was something completely fearsome, and often started by a Spanish sub-unit cutting off the path while other sub-units surrounded them (all while firing at the French). The French would hesitate for a few seconds due to being completely surrounded and receiving fire from all directions, but that was enough.
However, in this scene Gibson is pretty much alone (which means he doesn't have that numerical superiority and, obviously, cannot surround the entire British column), the path of that British column hasn't been entirely cut and, most importantly, he wouldn't be able to wipe out enough British soldiers to cause that shock by himself, specially not in the few seconds that would take for them to reorganise their thoughs and counterattack. Also, the terrain in which he does this ambush is a forest, which only makes things more difficult for an ambush with a single man. If they were inside a ravine and he managed to cut off their route (with explosives), maybe, but even then he wouldn't be able to destroy most of them during the small window of oportunity and things would escalate into a shooting that he would have no chance of winning.

I wonder if the original intent might’ve been to have Martin pull off the whole ambush himself and then at some point someone realized that was a bit too far fetched and they added the young sons to the battle via reshoots. It could just be the editing of the review but we don’t seem to get many shots of where the boys are in relation to the army, unlike with their dad.

Honestly this I think was a lazy attempt to mimic a far superior ambush scene like what was scene early on in the film Last of the Mohicans. As an American and history buff I always found The Patriot to be an embarrassment of a movie to watch. The first time I saw it I felt ashamed. Not Patriotic. It does have a few scenes and even quotes I enjoy, but over all the film was an insult. As I knew people outside America would be like "Is this how Americans view their revolution?"
As an American and fellow history buff, just shut the brain off and try to enjoy the film and get a movie that depicts the revolution better next time.

A big part of the mythos of the American Revolution is that the Brits stuck rigidly to a formalized set of tactics that fell apart in the face of Yankee ingenuity. This movie just retells those tropes a little stupider.

And this was the British Army that what? 25 years before had basically written the manual on how to fight in the American wilderness during the French and Indian Wars. A war in which a good proportion of the British Army became light infantry in all but name, often using tomahawks themselves.

I always thought the movie did a great injustice to the British army while at the same time diminishing the accomplishments of the "Patriots".
I thought my eyes were deceiving me, when it said part 3 of The Patriot.

Post script, before entering medicine I got my BA and MA in history. It was a pleasure to work with folk such as yourself and I didnt realise how different a breed those in the social sciences were from the broader academic spectra. Your videos offer some respite, an opportunity to hear a historian speak as opposed to the concise nature of medicine is refreshing. Thank you, as always

I reject these outrageous claims of careless, flippant historical inaccuracy being aimed at the guy who gave so many of us our single, totally not-narrow and reliable portrayal of the very likes of William Wallace, Jesus of Nazareth, Pontius Pilot, and late-1990s era Joe Pesci. What is the meaning of such Mel-icious defamation, sir?!
Minor point, one can assume Gibson ran into melee because he was perhaps out of ammo. It's certainly possible, and it's at least a plausible excuse.
Another thing you missed is that swinging a musket as a melee weapon is absolutely viable, but they're doing it backwards, you want to make the stock the striking point due to its greater weight, a blow like that could easily stun an opponent and allow you to coup de grace them.
Yeah I was under the asumption that he had 2 musket balls for every rifle, because he fires twice and switches muskets.
Oh, I'm pretty sure a solid hit from a buttstock as if it was a baseballbat will probably leave you more than just stunned. If a hit like that connects, big chance you straight up kill the person.
But yeah, it's faster to just stick 'm with the pointy end. Also, safer for yourself.

I really love the big winde-up swing at 31:04... especially how he only starts his swing AFTER his enemy has already ducked. And to top it off you see the stuntman (or Gibson) sitting still for a bit while he waits for the swing to come and pass over, instead of immediately striking at the red coat's feet or lower torso or hands... or ANYTHING.
They don't just suck at coming up with the choreography, but also at performing and timing it right, making the mess even worse.
