We stopped off for a relaxing few days in Donegal in great spirits but found out after night one that the local traffic wardens had victimised us and the Police were called. Dan in all fairness you were blocking the path, but the behavior of the town officials was beyond disgusting.
The officiousness of the traffic wardens was off the scale. Rude and unprofessional. My opinion as to whether the pavement was obstructed or not would be if someone in a wheelchair could get through. If not, then the pavement is definitely being obstructed.
I’m a Donegal town local and those two traffic wardens are absolute twats... always together, had it been raining they wouldn’t have been out... hope you get some justice and enjoy the rest of your travels

I did note that when the "detective" saw Mazzy's passport and her birth place was Co Clare he softened his attitude. Those traffic wardens really let themselves down.... not professional!!

They targeted you because you are not local, and will not fight it because it is too much of a hassle for you... They are “revenue generators” not enforcement officers...
Those two wardens deserve the sack after the way they mocked you. A disgrace from public 'officials'.

Hi Dan and Mazzy , I myself am a traffic enforcement officer and if I had seen you camper parked like that I would of tapped on your door and asked you simply to move forward 6 inches to save yourself from a ticket , It’s not their job to do that but some wardens are nice and would rather give you the benefit of the doubt than ticket you . Saves everyone a lot of grief . In my opinion yes you was parked over the path and did obstruct the way through slightly but a simple thing would of been to have them ask you to roll forward , the fact they asked the Irish camper owner to move does tell me something , they purely had it in for you and felt the need to ticket you but let fellow country men off . One rule for one and one for another . To me they were all total jobsworths and could of just seen sense . Good luck with the rest of your travels . 👍
Thanks Clark. Looking back on it, yes we were obstructing the path but it was the attitude and sneakyness that annoyed us. Nice to hear another take on it.

I'm Irish and a campervan owner and this is just embarrassing to watch. The way those 2 idiots dealt with the situation is so unprofessional and you can see they enjoyed it. An idiot with a small bit of power is never a good thing. Please don't let 2 people tarnish the rest of us.

Without me getting involved with any rights & wrongs, any parking violation is a civil offence not a law related crime.
The police were called because they didn't want me filming them.

The lesson learnt here is, do not go to Donegal to be milked by the system. Reduce the tourist cash injection.
Or park in an paid for actual camper van facility and not a public carpark
Be honest, you've reversed into the parking bay, had a quick check behind the van and thought "yeah, people should be able to get through that gap." You knew you were restricting access at the time but assumed it would be OK. I've done the very same thing and been ticketed. The wardens can hide behind the uniform and argue that they're only doing their job, but in fact their job is to ensure access isn't restricted (not just to hand out parking tickets) so the simple thing would have been for them to knock on and politely ask you find another spot. So they've actually allowed you to cause potential access issues for the public in order to generate revenue via a fine. Who's interest is that in? Certainly not the public's.

I’ve been to Ireland many times both on vacation and work. And I must say I have always found the people to be warm and kind, inviting!. No one should judge a entire nation or people on the actions of a couple of people!!!. This in no way will affect my choice on visiting a wonderful country!!!. Same on anyone that would make such a brash assumption on a country or even this village because of a small problem with a parking ticket!!!. For god sake this is what’s wrong with the world today!!!.

They have seen English plates and discriminated. Ireland looks beautiful, and I think the people have seemed welcoming, but I wouldn't go to Donegal after that.
Helen Blenkinsopp , I really can’t speak to the motives of those guys. I would hope not and I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Who knows maybe this guys just had a bad encounter with another person. Not saying that makes it right or thats what happened. I’m just saying I’ve found that people are good for the most part. And given the chance most people will choose to be kind and thoughtful instead of hatful. I truly believe in the good in everyone. So please give people a chance to prove that. Seems very unprofessional those 2 wardens laughing like silly people ,very childish and unfair treatment,I guess if the bosses see them laughing and acting like this with the public may actually be against there working policy ,be interesting to know this .
Hey, really feel for you guys. We have been in a situation where we accidentally parked where we shouldn't have. Once in Cleethorpes and once in Grassington. On both occasions, the traffic wardens came to us, explained the problem, and allowed us to move on. We agree that those traffic wardens were sneaky and should have given you the opportunity to correct things. Sorry guys, but you need to come home. Best wishes to you both, Kev and Trace xx
You were blocking the footpath Dan but as both tickets were issued within a 24hr period ( 1 day) and within the time permitted on the parking ticket; ask that they are considered together as one ticket.
Ignore the over zealous wardens and pay, it will be your cheapest option.
Not a good advert for tourists and very professional parking attendants laughing like little school boys. But they are retired old farts. I would say there is something about that with the irish more homes. A bit overkill with the sending a detective and his bad attitude. Disgraceful.

I commented in detail on your Garda interaction video in Ballina.
I’m not going to go into anywhere as much detail here regarding this interaction , primarily because despite my having attempted to give you good sound legal advice , (and including why the Gardaí don’t want to be recorded), you blocked one of my comments from public viewing despite it being made by me to assist you.
Anyhow, just some points on this.
As I said in a previous comment to your Ballina video, YES you are 100% entitled to record ANYWHERE in public. I’d suggest the traffic warden said you are not entitled to film because he either didn’t know the law regarding recording in a public place or he simply didn’t want to be recorded...(I’d suggest the latter).
The Garda detective had no authority to ask Mazzy for her details, only the driver (Dan). (Simply because you were accused of a Road Traffic Offence and it’s only the driver can be found guilty, not passengers).
Yet again the Garda (similar to Garda Gerry) was trying to soften you up when discussing Mazzy’s place of birth.
Racism... It’s not racism Dan, you and all involved are the same race (Caucasian). What you’re referring to is Nationalism. I’ll be honest here... I don’t believe it was. You’ll hear the Detective at one point referring to how your (Dan) attitude changed. You know what the Gardaí call that...? The ‘attitude test’. You initially failed the attitude test, cameras recording, disputing their claims etc etc. That’s why it escalated. Incidentally I’d have done exactly what you did so I commend you. You have to stand up for your rights and ALWAYS record. However that will undoubtedly ruffle their feathers.
The Garda detective referenced that he might prosecute you for obstruction. What he’s referring to is the ‘Public Order Act 1994’ (Section 9). QUOTE : 9.-Any person who, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, wilfully prevents or interrupts the free passage of any person or vehicle in any public place shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £200. (Summary conviction is if the case goes ahead, it’ll be held in the lowest court (The District Court).
When the Garda Detective asked for Mazzy’s details, she referenced her passport. You are NOT obliged to show the Gardaí your passport when you’re dealing with nothing but a road traffic offence. (As already stated, Mazzy was under no obligation to give ANY details as she was nothing more than the passenger in your Motorhome. Only the driver has to show his driving licence. I explained that point in your Ballina video also.
Mazzy said to the detective that surely he can find her home address on the Garda’s system. Not quite. The Garda can only access Irish registered vehicles on their system (known as PULSE). They can have the British police give them info on UK registered vehicles but that only happens for serious crimes, never for simple parking offences.
The traffic wardens are as you say, being ‘sneaky’, however 2 offences were committed (On different dates). Having said that if you did contest it in court , most District court judges would prosecute you on only one ticket.
As for the offence itself, you are obstructing the footpath (A wheelchair wouldn’t have a chance of passing by). What’ll annoy you more about that is, every second car obstructs the footpath in Ireland. You simply were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Finally, if you do not pay the ticket (which is done online contrary to what other comments refer to when they state the Garda wanted the cash there and then), and decide to go to court and argue your point, you’ll have to return to the courthouse in Donegal.
Here’s a tip: Throw both tickets in the bin. You’ve a UK registered vehicle. They cannot trace your whereabouts. What’ll happen if you ignore the tickets is this>>> A few reminders may be sent to your UK address, then if you continue to ignore those (most likely you’ll still be in Ireland at that stage anyhow), you’ll then receive a summons to court (Dan , not Mazzy), because Dan is the driver. So you then ignore that. Court date arrives (eg 1st March 2021, you’re not present in the courtroom in Donegal, instead you’re back in the UK enjoying some decent weather :-), the judge will fine you in your absence.
eg, €200. That notice will be sent to your home address in the UK. Bin that as well. They would have you arrested and extradited back to Ireland if they were investigating a murder etc, for a parking fine... the courts couldn’t give a damn and will forget about it. They have no legal method of forcing you to return to Ireland or pay any fines.
So 3 options:
1. Pay the fine
2. Ignore it and fight it in court (back in Donegal in approx 6 months)
3. Bin it and forget about it (as detailed above).
My suggestion... Go back to Achill 😉
Oh and those two traffic wardens and their behaviour ... 🤡

My brother has just finished training in UK as traffic warden.the philosophy now is not to issue tickets in his town,but to educate the driver and prevent.Im part Irish,visited loads of times..seen 95 percent of the best of the Irish,but have been on the receiving of the bad side.i suppose that would be pretty much the same here in the UK.Funny enough my worst experiences have been in Donegal and considering they are very reliant on tourism would hope they would take a more balanced approach,but in my experience they did not.Yeah..in away I thought it as racism.i now go to other places in Ireland,where I'm treated fairly and with continuity .I don't visit there anymore.would rather spend my buck where it's appreciated.Shame on you Donegal council and enforcement officers.your making it hard for the people in your county who do things right and work hard in tourism and other service industries to make a living,pay their taxes and keep the officials in jobs.Well it's obvious some of you have chips on your shoulders.You reap what you sew...in Dan And Mazzies case,many travellers have been watching their great vidios and on the whole been impressed by the kindness and hospitality shown...I for one along with the 10,000 plus community will be giving Donegal a miss

Sorry as to parking - quilty ! if you had a wheelchair or pram you where causing an obstruction of the path. But I also think the parking warden where out of order they should have advised you so you could have corrected your parking or moved.

It’s not racism. In the US, it happens all the time with people driving through States that they don’t belong to . Law enforcement believe that tourist are not going to fight a ticket when you’re from out of State. Was it wrong? Absolutely!
Go to court...explain how they let the “Irish van” know what was happening but not you. This way your video evidence will show the rudeness and explain their unwelcoming of tourism after the economy has been shut down. You will probably win in court.
Totally understand where you are coming from Dan, but I got the feeling that, once he knew Mazzy was Irish, that he was saying just don't pay it because you are not residents and there is no way they can enforce the fines. So chill you two, do'nt pay the fines and enjoy the rest of your travels. Mazzy being born there saved you from being victimised as British brexiteers. I agree. The traffic cops had every opportunity to explain that they may/may not have been illegally parked and had them move on but walked off instead.

Wise up. You were parked wrongly and obstructing the footpath from normal usage. A mother wouldn't be able to take her pram through that gap. A wheelchair user wouldn't be able to get through there. The footpath is for pedestrians - Not large vehicles badly parked. I think you deserve what you got. (Maybe should have been charged more for "Wasting Police Time").
How very unprofessional those wardens were and the sergeant and detective sound about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. Totally unfair and unjust they could have just advised you to move. It’s one place I wouldn’t be wasting my time visiting again when I’m back in Ireland. Try to not let them spoil your travels though.

The traffic wardens here in filey have been super busy, but I see them talking to people all the time to avoid giving a ticket where they are able. They are polite, considerate and often helpful. A stark contrast to those two clowns in your video I have to say.

Why would you consider paying them? They have no way to enforce the fine. I got a parking ticket in Brussels and it had blown off the windscreen by the time I reached the eurotunnel 🤣

I hate to say it but you are taking up most of the path for wheelchair and pushchair access however the traffic Warden should of asked you to move forward before issuing you a ticket. My husband is a traffic Warden and that is the procedure he does before issuing a ticket. I must say though that I've noticed that no matter where you park every parking bay are only the size for a car, what are people with motorhome or campervans supposed to do.... I believe there should be some bays for motorhomes and campervans. The council need to take this situation into consideration because it is an issue that can easily be solved. I'm sorry you've had a bad experience... ❤️
I would agree that you are blocking most of the footpath. The traffic wardens should just have had a word, you could have just turned the van around 180 degrees and the axles would still been within the lines, and your over hang would have been sticking out but not obstructing the path.
I also agree it’s stupid that you got two tickets too.
Traffic wardens are a law unto themselves though.
Sorry to hear about the parking issue you had. As you were in the van those traffic wardens should have had the decency to knock and ask you to move before ticketing you. Their laughing at you was totally unprofessional and should see them disciplined. Planning my travels and both Ballina and now Donegal off the list. I fear if you continue to be treated so shabbily then possibly Ireland itself is off the list. Too many beautiful places to visit in this world without needing to go where they are spoilt and brought into disrepute by the small minded and sneaky people that live in them. I hope you only have good experiences from now on.
@@DianeD862 Didn't say I would take it out on Ireland. I did say if these two instances become three, four or more then I would look upon that as Ireland being a place that perhaps is not that welcoming to motorhomes and therefore a place I would POSSIBLY not visit. I feel that is not an reasonable view to come to (and one I don't think will happen). At the moment I see no reason to visit Donegal. Ultimately it is up to the people of Ireland, as it is to all of us, for the impression we give of our home country/county/ town or village. If you like Donegal, good for you and keep visiting but I know of many other places that appear to be more welcoming (in Ireland as well) and that is where I will go.

My brother is a parking attendant from Ireland, there job is to assist you , if you are in van they must ask you to move and explain , you are in the wrong over hanging kerb but if you spoke to him before he put ticket on your van he should ask you to move , you will win appeal if you can prove you were present and spoke to him , now if they don't believe you your second ticket and his photos prove you were there so I would use this to help prove the facts of your first ticket . Also you will not have to pay twice as you didn't leave and repark and you were on the same pay and display ticket . The worce case is paying one .
1.
parking assistant must ask you to move if you are there .
2. Same he must ask you to move before ticketing .
3. Two tickets for same offence while on the 24hr pay and display is wrong unless you left and came back .
Point 3 you will win point 2 you have vudeo of being there
Point 1 is his word against yours BUT he must of photo the ticket on screan and his camera will have date and time , so if there is a gap between when ticket was issued and when photo was taken it would help show that he was waiting for you to go back inside .

I would have found it VERY hard to "keep calm & carry on" if faced with the same scenario. I hope you aren't the victim of further harassment by either parking attendants or the guarda.
If they were really concerned about someone disabled not being able to get passed, they would have asked you to move pronto. They knew you were in the vehicle, they just saw and English vehicle and thought we can get money off them. Disgraceful.

As a long haul trucker in the US for 30 plus years I have seen little shake downs like this many times,just pay your fines Dan and Mazzy there all in this together to make money off out of town folks its plan and simple.That's why they never said a word to you.You are from out of town so lets shake him down for some extra cash.The judge will be in on it to,so its a waste of your time to even mess with it.With your platform just tell other travelers of the game and the way you were treated there.They do this all the time you were just the latest victim of there shake down.

You could have pulled forward and it would have been done.
They just got a little to greedy and bought their town a million dollars worth of bad advertising for 45 quid.
I drive through London most days delivering. There are a lot of really nice wardens in London. But every now and then you get a bell end. I got one the other week, videoed him whilst asking him to explain the law I’d broken so I could inform the company. He wasn’t able to and in the end he walked off and I avoided the ticket. It only takes one a-hole to ruin a lovely day. Hope your next town treats you better!
All they had to do was ask you to pull forward a couple of feet. When I used to wheel my dad about in a wheelchair it was a pain if people parked so as to obstruct the pathway but a quick pleasant ask and they always moved simple. Anyway keep up the good work and try not to get too stressed out.

Things like that happen in the U.S. also. Cops will target out-of-state vehicles because the owners don't want to hang around long enough to go to court and fight the ticket. Have to replenish the town coffers, don't you know.

Another option , get your subscribers to email the local councils and tourist information / leave reviews on TRIPADVISOR travel review site and town websites , if they get a couple of thousand emails and honest reviews of how people were treated it will hit them hard .
Soz Dan but.......anyone with crutches or In a wheelchair would find it impossible to pass your van and I think you did know this? But the important thing is to learn do back down and try and not get into an argument especially with the police, when he said you would be charged with obstruction he meant “obstructing an officer doing his duty” and you both could have been taken into custody? Also remember you are not under English law but Republic of Ireland law which might be totally different if the Garda ask for your details and also recording them?. I’ve been driving for over 40 years and found the best way to communicate was to laugh joke and smile, never always worked but I did save a few pounds.

Sorry Dan but I’m no Saint....but I am disabled and like many people in this world have to go through a maze of cars,trucks,motorbikes and even emergency vehicles that are abandoned on or obstructing the foot path. Also I have went through worse than that and ended up in court because I was just like yourself. The penny finally dropped and I used my brain and smiled my way out of situations, even apologising for doing wrong. I do think in your next video you might take some time out and say sorry to your many viewers that are disabled or have a family/friend that is. I do still enjoy your vlogs as you are my eyes and my Legs and go places where many a disabled person can’t. Cheers Alan.
Unfortunately there are these types of people everywhere. Give the wrong people a tiny bit of authority and you can create bad situations for practically anyone that comes in contact with them.

Dan good on you for standing your ground, that detective is corrupt and the Garda don't have the best reputation. Technically can't dispute the parking style but they could have warned you after the first ticket. But this is purely political same as the last place you got tugged by the police. All I would say Dan and Mazzy is don't let this overwhelm you - the comments on here speak for themselves - you were treated very badly , the wardens should simply have asked you to move. Keep smiling and enjoying your travels ! Incidentally, I noticed a while back that in our local area warden's badges saying :"traffic warden" were replaced with badges saying "civil enforcement". OMG this is just absolutely ridiculous and why couldn't the traffic wardens just say I mean you was in the motorhome it wasn't even empty. Just say like you said could you move forward a little job done. Oh no he waited until you wasn't in sight and then you ended up with the two tickets. In fort William we got a fine for parking because the ticket was placed on the side window and not at the front cab of our Motorhome !

They cannot obstruct the drivers view as you may get in and drive before you see it that's why they place them low on the passenger side
I think the request to pay the ticket will go to mazzy’s address as registered keeper of the motorhome. If not paid it will concur extra and then someone will knock on the door. My daughter forgot to pay the toll for dartford bridge. She forgot to update her details as she had moved and by the time the letters got to her the bill was over £600.

Here's my tuppence worth. You were obstructing the pathway. It's correct that the pathway should be able to be used by all pedestrians (wheelchairs, prams etc.). However the treatment by the wardens was horrendous and unnecessary. There is the letter of the "law" and the spirit of the "law". A decent public servant will work between the two. The first ticket could be issed with an explanation. The second should only be issued if you flagrantly ignore the first.

I spent my childhood in Donegal, these 2 eejits are not typical of the people in Ireland. They showed favouritism to the Irish motorhome. However you had parked illegally and was blocking the path for anyone in a wheelchair or buggy.
The fact that they asked the Irish registered vehicle to move but let you stay , then issued a parking ticket is totally unprofessional.
Looks like they are not very professional and also not well liked in the local area. But that is their own fault.

There's fault on both sides here. Could a wheelchair or double-buggy have used the path behind the van? Another foot forward would have sorted that out but the wardens didn't handle the situation well either. Unfortunate all round.
Edit: I meant to say that if the traffic warden had simply said, "Could you pull your van forward a foot please?" this whole situation would never have happened so it was very poorly handled by the wardens.
Ive been a cop in the USA for 25 years. I would never treat anyone like this. I would have explained things to you first before ever writing a ticket.....
I was critical of your previous police video, but this is completely out of order. You're right, you've been so blatantly discriminated against it's difficult to stomach. That detective is not only in the wrong job, he's most likely put people at risk through his whole career if this is his approach to a simple parking ticket. The irony is, the ticket is justified, there's no way a mother with pram or wheelchair user could access the pathway. In saying that, surely give the van a knock and see if you can sort the situation out with a chat, rather than a ticket. If you don't answer, ticket it is. Shame on the wardens but more shame on the detective, he's got scum written all over him.
On the upside, you've paid for the tickets and made money out of the situation, so stick it to 'em! haha.
Donegal Garda were investigated about corruption before and most of Donegal town Garda were either suspended or moved it's not only English its Northern Ireland drivers that they target they are not worth even talking about .I refuse to stop in Donegal town now

No doubt they like to have a beer or two with those wardens when they all clock off. In Ireland, everyone knows everyone else and if you have a surname and reputation that's respected, you can act above the law in certain situations and get away with it. Nepotism is alive and well over there.

No, when the detective was talking about doing you for obstruction, that wasn’t a parking law, he’s talking about obstructing a peace/police officer in the execution of his/her duty. You end up with a criminal record for that one.

The police officer was stretching it a bit to try and pin that on Dan, but that is exactly what he was threatening him with. He wasn’t talking about fining Dan a third time for his van obstructing the path.

Meaning he would have had to take you down to the station and arrest you. Under Section 3 of this particular law, “A person guilty of an offence under subsection (3) shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £500 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or to both.”
That would never have stuck in court, but that’s what he was threatening you with.
