    Today there are many types of grout, so there is no need to settle for the old standard cementitious grouts that stain and loose their original color in a very short time, they get dirty and ugly. There are many advanced grouts available, that are very satin resistant and are applied or installed, just as you would a regular grout. There are also epoxy and premixed grouts that can be used which might require slightly modified methods to install. In this video I talk about the grout I will be using to grout the ceiling tile wall tile and floor tile, and also about the color matching caulks that most manufacturers have available to coordinate with their grouts. All tile installed by Sal DiBlasi, Elite-tile Company, in the Boston North Shore area. THIS TEC GROUT 550 IS COSTING ME A LOT OF MONEY IN REPAIR. I hired a licensed tile contractor with many years experience in installing tiles installed tiles & he used this Tec Grout for my new shower. ( This same contractor had installed tiles in my previous homes with no problem at all ) We did not use this new shower and kept it dry for weeks after completion, but when we started using this new shower, we noticed dark colors all over our tiles and the grout is eroding every time it gets wet. Now I'll need to redo my entire brand new shower . My contractor said he has never seen this issue with other grout he used before. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS TEC GROUT

    I like TEC Power grout. If you are going for the brightest white that doesn't dry up dirty, go with Ardex FL brilliant white. By far the best "bright white" performance grout.

    Used to use Powergrout. My bathroom is 6 months old, grout started coming out of the grout joints. So i touched it up.
    Another 4 months later and there are tons of more grouts coming out and failing. Pretty upset. :/
    Havent used PG in a long time.
    Switched over to Ardex, then switched over to BOSTIK. Their grout is amazing. Cleanup is the easiest by far.
    Came to "talk about grout." Didnt really get that, though. :P

    Other than “follow manufacturers directions” for tips on using the TEC Power grout, any other tips for this product you’d like to add? For example, in the floor grouting I noticed the grout looked pretty wet... do you aim for a little more water than what they say when you mix? Do you mix in smaller batches, etc.? Thx, you are great!

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  6 років тому +6

      With these advanced grouts, it is best to follow the direction exactly, don't jump on it too early, but don't wait too long either. As soon as you touch the grout and get no transfer to your finger, start washing with as little water as possible, but yet enough.

    Hi Sal, you mentioned that you mixed the grout with a cordless drill and paddle... I'd always heard that you should mix the grout by hand with a margin trowel to avoid any air bubbles, since a little air bubble could leave a nasty divot in the grout surface. Is this overkill, or just something that you've done so much that you have a feel for when the mixing is perfect?

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  6 років тому +1

      All dry products that come in a bag and need to be mixed with water or some other liquid have very specific mixing instructions, they usually refer to mixing with a drill or mixer at a certain RPM for a set period of time, most will then need to slake, but not all, and then mixed again for another set period of time. It is very important to mix according to directions to have the product perform as designed. I have heard that before, but it is mainly referring to old standard grouts that I have left in the past, whether they were true or not, I don't know.

    SpectraLOCK Pro Premium is King! I know you don't like epoxy grouts but I recently finished my bathroom remodel and I can't tell you how much I love this stuff. I know it's expensive but definitely worth the price on account of it's stain proof and you never have to seal it! Not to mention the color matching benefit. BTW: The secret to washing it is to use microfiber rags instead of the big sponge. I love your videos Sal! Sometime soon I will upload a video of the stellar DIY bathroom remodel I have accomplished by watching your videos! Thank you!

      I have used Spectralock many times and it is probably one of the most user friendly epoxy grouts out there, maybe Ardex is a bit easier. One thing to remember that epoxy grouts are stain proof, but they are also UV sensitive, so always take all conditions into account. Also when handled often, a person can become sensitized to epoxy so using it on every job may backfire.

    Hoping you can help a girl out quickly! I am about ready to grout my shower. 3x6 white glossy subway tile with just over 1/16 inch (1/32 inch spacer plus the nubs built in sides). Also have octagon marble floor 1/18" sheets. I have only ever used guess called "Old School" grouts and have tiled and grouted many times. I was wanting Mapei Kera Colur U mainly for the super light gray color called Frost. However, I have at times experienced efflorescence with these type of grouts no mater the detail you give. However, other then efflorescence, I liked how hard grout was with no flake out. I don't want to take a blotchy color risk on shower and have heard of this Power Grout. I have seen so many say they use, this, yet so many say just came right out with water after long cure and many issues. I am nervous to try as I have self tiled this huge shower by myself (flawless too) and couldn't bare it not curing. I do not care for the gluey caulky feeling grouts, but love the sanded hardy grouts. Anyway, my questions.....can I use Tec Power Grout on subway with just over 1/16" line? Will power grout scratch the white glossy subway tiles? What grout will near guarantee no scratch out of joints if follow directions to a T? Can you come do it for me?

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  6 років тому +1

      The key to proper grouting is to follow instructions to the letter, since I don't make the product I can't guarantee anything. What I can say us I have used it many, many times and have never had a problem. Most issues come from mixing with too much water, not mixing for the correct amount of time, not letting it slake and then using excessive water to wash or any combination of the above. Any product that is not installed properly or used for an application it is not designed for can cause problems, so pick your grout and install according to manufacturer's recommendations, and you should be fine.

      Thank you so so so much for quick reply. can I use Tec Power Grout on subway with just over 1/16" line? Will power grout scratch the white glossy subway tiles? Also, what is your thoughts on Mapei Keracolor Unsanded? I don't mind sealing and just two adults and not full time shower, so shower will see care. Concerned with sooo many horror stories on the Tec Power Grout even used correctly...they are doing many claims.

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  6 років тому

      I have used it many times on subway tile, white is not one of those colors that can be blotchy.

    • @bridgettriegerix4980
      @bridgettriegerix4980 6 років тому

      I will be going for a light to medium gray, so I worry about efflorescence. I have heard others adding grout booster to Mapei Keracolor to keep water out of the equation. Gosh, just soo many horror stories about the Power Grout that I feel I may shy away from it, but man did I love idea of having some grain to the grout as I don't much care for unsanded look. So, if you were NOT to use Power Grout, which would you suggest I use... Mapei Keracolor Unsanded, Flex Color CQ or other? I have grouted many many times, but always has been a white or off white color (and still some shading issues), but this will be my first time with a darker color. Maybe all my questions will be of help to someone else searching this subject. THANK YOU!

    • @SalDiBlasi

      The grout line has to be at the very least 1/16" form there you need to determine how even the tile size runs. if all the tiles are exactly the same, then 1/16" the more they differ in size, the wider the grout line has to be.

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  6 років тому +1

      Most manufactures make the caulk in both Siliconized Acrylic Caulk in sanded and unsanded, which is more user friendly and als Silicone, again sanded and unsanded, which is a bit more difficult to use . Most are available as color matching for the grouts. The function of the caulk is to provide a soft joint in the corners and changes of plain to allow for movement, not to waterproof, your shower or wet area should be waterproof before any tile is installed.

    Your videos are so, so informative and educational. Thank you so very much. Do you have a video on what size grout lines for different tiles? 1/8"/3mm of a 12 x 24... I cannot seem to pin down a site or video that explains how you would determine grout lines. I may not be looking correctly.

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  6 років тому +1

      Minimum grout line is 1/16" no matter the tile. What that means is if the tiles are all exactly the same size, the grout line can be 1/16, however that is usually only rectified tiles. So to determine what the grout width should be, you see how the tiles vary in size and make the groutline 3 times the difference in size. So if the tiles vary by 1/16 then the grout width should be 3/16, if they vary by an 1/8 then 3/8. Problem is no one wants wide grout lines so he rule is often ignored.

    I chose Power Grout 550 in espresso for 350ft of wood plank porcelain, I had never grouted anything before. Did a lot of research before choosing this grout, I am happy to have the decision confirmed by you Sal. It was pretty stiff to work with and concluded that grouting is NOT my calling. Dried much lighter than it was supposed to and I didn't use a lot of water for clean up, used distilled for mixing, still soaks up water drop after 7 days curing. Is there something wrong with it?

    • @workisfun...2438
      @workisfun...2438 6 років тому +1

      Grout color is a tricky animal. The color usually doesn't look the same once it's down because of the visual effects the rest of the tile gives you. It's sort of an optical illusion. Plus, anything that uses cement as a base can do what's called flashing and give a white residual in the color. It's something that is usually avoidable by letting it set properly and doing the wash down but it's not 100% avoidable unfortunately. Usually I tell my customers that they need to pick their color, and then we go one shade darker to get the contrast they are looking for. As for water absorbsion, any cement product will be pourous and absorb some water , same reason is why it will dry eventually. A sealer helps repel water but is only a temporary product. The purpose of using an advanced product like Power Grout is to mitigate the need for sealers. If you went by the directions and have learned from Sal's videos, I'm sure your first foray into it will be just fine.

      Like Work is fun... said, great answer, I would add that you should mix exactly as directed and measure the water, to get the properties that the grout has been engineered to achieve. Power grout is quite user friendly, I have had very few issues with it.

    I just finished putting this floor down in my shower. I was planning to grout it before putting up shower wall tile. Then cover it and move on. However, It seems you save all grout for end. If the tile is installed properly, it will be just fine, it is a floor that is meant to be walked on. Use a good durable cardboard, couple of layers if you like, or some sheet rock or whatever makes you feel comfortable that it will not be ruined.

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge acquired over many years. Can you use epoxy grout (spectralock pro) on 7/8" thasso marble mosaic tile in a shower wall application or the new premixed spectralock 1 epoxy "like" grout or stick with unsanded? In a Wedi installation where the panels are inert and do not expand or contract, are movement joints an absolute? I realize TCNA always recommends them.

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  4 роки тому

      You have to be careful with marble and epoxy grouts, sometimes the resins in the grout can discolor the edges of the tile. Spectralock 1 does not cause that, so it might be a better choice. Same problem can occur if you use a standard dark grout on a white marble, the dyes in the grout can picture frame the edges of the marble. So be very careful with your choice and do a test before grouting the whole thing.

    Hey Sal, I grouted 2 bathrooms in the past week and used Mapei Ultra color and the grout all turned from the gray it's supposed to be to white. I was told it was efflorescense by Mapei, so I used some sulfamic acid and it didn't clean it up. I've tried everything short of removing the grout which is my last resort. Never had this issue before, but I need to fix it before the remodel is finished. I'm pretty sure based on my research that the grout did latex leaching. I'm not sure how it happened since I used 3 different bags of the same type of Mapei grout over the course of a couple days and all the same result. If you can shed some light that would be great! Thanks!

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  6 років тому

      You probably know this, but washing with too much water can do that, or not mixing according to directions, or adding too much water when mixing.

    • @amonideos
      @amonideos 6 років тому

      That's what I was reading. However, to make sure that this wasn't the issue I purposely mixed the grout on the last part of the floor a thick grout mix, thicker than I normally do and purposely used very little water at all to clean it up and same white results. I'm pretty sure I am screwed and will be removing all the grout. Probably will not ever use Mapei grout again.

    Sal, after watching tons of your videos I felt confident in tiling my walk-in shower. All has gone well but yesterday I grouted the mosaic marble pebble floor. The tile called for an unsanded grout. I went will a Mapei Keracolor U unsanded grout. I also used the accompanying “grout maximizer” in place of water. Today, about 15 hours later, the grout is very low in most of the floor and has a ton of hairline cracks. Any advice would be appreciated. I began scraping out the cracked areas and was contemplating applying another coat but I’m not sure if that’s the right approach

    • @ryanmiller9710
      @ryanmiller9710 3 роки тому

      Also wanted to add that the “random” pattern of the tile creates joint gaps much larger than 1/8”, some places as large as 1/2”-nearly 3/4”. Based on my limited experience/knowledge I would’ve thought to use a sanded grout but agin the tile specified for unsanded.

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  3 роки тому

      Unsanded grout will do exactly that when used in a grout joint that is too wide, best to use unsanded in grout joints less than 1/8. Modern grouts these days only come in sanded and are used for all grout sizes. Applying another layer of grout over the existing grout will not help, grout does not stick to grout. Your only option is to scrape it out and start over with a sanded grout.

I got lucky and got a full pail of Mapei Flexcolor CQ in the same color I had picked out for my shower for only $4 at my local Habitat store, and I liked using it a lot, but it does leave a little bit of not that noticeable haze, but for me not really forming any habits with cement based grouts (only done two small backsplash kinda projects prior with Keracolor sanded and unsanded) I found it a lot easier to use and I like how it feels dried.
