In addition to accounting for inflation, I think the "today" numbers for older films should be adjusted for population growth since the pool of ticket buyers keeps growing. I did the math with examples on my Twitter account in 2022, but it's crazy to calculate what Gone With The Wind, Star Wars, E.T. or Titanic would have made in today's dollars if the purchase rate increased at the same proportion as the population increase. Example (using 2022 stats): Star Wars (1977 release only) sold 137.8 million tickets ($307.2 million from $2.23 per ticket) when the domestic population was 220.2 million (US only). Converted to 2022 population numbers (US + Canada) that's 232.0 million tickets or an inflation+population adjusted take of $2.262 BILLION (domestic ONLY)! And that number would be EVEN HIGHER today!

So when Mario hit a billion, there was everybody saying it was because it was a mutli-generational IP, and all this talk about whether it was a quality film or not. I think it might more be about the market. I attribute the Bikeriders dropping 66% cause they stupidly announced that it would be available digitally 3 weeks after it released in theaters. Hopefully Horizon doesn’t do that LOL.
It's great that A Quiet Place: Day One & Inside Out 2 had a Barbienheimer type weekend thanks to A Quiet Place: Day One outperforming expectations and darn near taking 1st place. Disney going to have 2 billion dollar movies with deadpool 3 and inside out. WB may have billion dollar in joker 2. I have no idea what joker 2 is going do. Could be bigger then the 1st. Could be massive disappointment. Musical label likely will work against it but uniqueness can draw attention and ticket sales.
I hope Disney has learned its lesson that Pixar movies have always been good in box office numbers. Inside Out 2 is a good sequel. Not as good as Toy Story 3, but not as bad as Cars 2.
Axel F should’ve been in theaters. The movies in the theaters this summer are really weak. There’s lots of room for success; theaters just need something worth playing, and people will come.
Find it hilarious that Angel Studios are changing up the movie's title so they could have "Sound Of" again. Don't think it's gonna pay off but we'll see how it does.
It's a little disappointing that The Bikeriders isn't doing better but I can see why. It's a well-made film but there just isn't a strong narrative throughline or anything that you'd come out of the theater ready to rave about. It's good, not great. If someone asked if they should see it, though I'd say "yes" I doubt I'd be overly emphatics and that's the type of reaction I think that you need for word-of-mouth these days.
Dan, one idea, you know, I feel like the era multiple big budget movies a year started in the 2000s ou 20010s, I would love to see in the graphic of road to recovery how was the average (adjust for inflation) of the 90s for example. Because I maybe wrong, because is just an impression, but I think part of the fall of the box office has a little to do with a bubble that was create by super heroes movies and increase by the success of the MCU. Anyway, just an idea.
Curious if you ever revisit old Movie Fights to see what predictions/pitches come to fruition? I remember one wherein the question was what movie deserves a sequel and someone said Inside Out 2. I just love when it happens!
Disney and Universal will probably pass Warner Bros by July 4th I think because WB has had a largely dead summer. Disney has Deadpool 3 and Alien: Romulus and Universal has DM4 and Twisters (which is being distributed by WB internationally, but this is regarding the Domestic marketplace). Warner Bros might have better prospects later on with Beetlejuice 2, Lord of the Rings and Joker 2, but Moana 2 and Mufasa will probably be hits for Disney and Universal has Wicked. Paramount also has Gladiator 2 and Sonic 3(which usually makes less than people think though), so I believe Disney has the best chances given that their movies are the safest bets. WB is on shaky ground because all their films are risky while Universal is just in the middle.
@@MichealWilson92 Snow White isn’t coming out this year, and Mufasa will be fine because the Lion King is still a huge brand. I see it making Little Mermaid money, which is still okay given the lead they’re going to have with Deadpool and Moana
Be on the lookout for the outside chance that the fall guy comes back into the to 10 Next week... Looks like Universal is doing another Jurassic/Firestarter forced pairing again. Mostly at drive-ins... They are pairing it with Disposable Me 4!!
Based on cumulative domestic box office chart and quick math in my head. Ticket sales are down about 40% from before 2020. No calculator app on iPad to check my math. I’m curious how many movie theaters have closed since 2020. Both independent and big guys like AMC. No idea if there is a way to track that but would be curious to see it.
It would be great to have some kind of overall cinema revenue comparison with these breakdowns as well - if that is possible. Like an analysis that looks at the industry as a whole over a year or couple of years

32:20 2004 for me only feels like yesterday (I was finishing highschool, ) but in a way it also fees like a by gone era. An era where the box office could still be dominated by romcoms, gross out comedies, tom hanks dramas etc.
I hope Disney realizes the reason Inside Out 2 is doing well is down to the quality of the story in both the original and sequel, not just that we only want sequels regardless of quality. But I guess hoping for that might be as effective as hoping for a lottery win 😊

My most anticipated release of Summer 2024 is Dan’s review of Despicable Me 4
A quiet place day one was bad. Horizon was amazing. Just amazing. Not perfect but it’s an adult movie. So is Daddio
Missed opportunity to call the new Beverly Hills Cop movie Axel as F. Oh well.
"Two days until I retire" would have been funnier given Murphy's age, especially as it also references 48 Hrs.
Beverly Hills Cop AF
Hey Dan, why don't you plot market share over time using a sankey graph.
Love the show! Love it released Mondays too!
Warm greetings from Brazil.
Curious if you ever revisit old Movie Fights to see what predictions/pitches come to fruition? I remember one wherein the question was what movie deserves a sequel and someone said Inside Out 2. I just love when it happens!
Please Review Kill ….I hear it’s awesome …It will be like John wick but more bloody and gory
If inside out 2 passes 2019 lion king as the highest grossing animated film i'll be happy
Both Mufasa : the lion king and Snow White will be huge financial failures for Disney
Love your Vids Dan but still disagree with you not counting th Lion King remake as animated.
I have no idea what Thelma is about, but i am picturing it as some wierd Thelma and Louise sequel/prequel.
This whole summer is disappointing. The only movie I want to see is Axel F, so I won’t be going to the theater this summer.
I'm glad the box office is doing well, I guess I'm just selfishly disappointed that it isn't movies I'm interested in that are doing well.
It would be great to have some kind of overall cinema revenue comparison with these breakdowns as well - if that is possible. Like an analysis that looks at the industry as a whole over a year or couple of years
Unrelated, new lego jaws set releases August 1. Official pictures out now
Yellowstone fans are salty that he screwed over the franchise to make this movie.
2:17 wait what? No Dan. You got it wrong there. kalki is not a Punjabi language movie. It's a Telugu language movie, and belongs from the same film industry (Tollywood) as RRR & Baahubali.
Thank you for doing these earlier now I don’t have to listen to grace randolph you did it a day earlier I could cut her out completely
32:20 2004 for me only feels like yesterday (I was finishing highschool, ) but in a way it also fees like a by gone era. An era where the box office could still be dominated by romcoms, gross out comedies, tom hanks dramas etc.
35:30 The director of John Wick is remaking it in Hollywood
Great timing, just finished cooking breakfast! Let's do this!
I hope Disney realizes the reason Inside Out 2 is doing well is down to the quality of the story in both the original and sequel, not just that we only want sequels regardless of quality. But I guess hoping for that might be as effective as hoping for a lottery win 😊
Correction to the 365 chart, you have June 14/23 not this year
There hasn't been great word of mouth on Despicable Me 4. Sadly other than maybe the first has there been good word of mouth for any of the movies?
