Another excellent Islamic book in English. MashAllah! A prediction: By year 2100 English language will become the 2nd lingua-franca of Islam after Arabic, what Persian used to be for a millennia.
@@shahram6869 Both Arabic and English are needed. The age of Persian and Urdu language as the Lingua Franca of Islam is gone now, English is needed now.
@@hassanmirza2392 You are right. Arabic is the language of the Quran. There is no escape from that. However, Arabic is no longer the language of science as it once was and it doesn't seem like it will be once again. The Arabs have failed their language along with Islam. Any worthy Islamic scholarship should now be conducted in English. Muslims shouldn't depend on the East as its despotism only disappoints. We are to take it upon ourselves in the languages, we, as westerners, are familiar with. Islam is not an Arab or "Eastern" religion as it is so often depicted. The way to disprove that would be to fund Islamic scholarship in English and develop a Western tradition.
@@shahram6869 You are a good person, whatever you wrote is 100% correct. The Islamic scholarship for the world should be done in English. Arabs have to improve themselves, they have indeed failed Islam. This Islamist ideology is a failure of Arabs, first and foremost. According to Wilfred Hoffman, the next Islamic revival will come from West, not from 50 OIC nations. Muslims, particularly Sunni Muslims have a 'Herrenrasse' mentality. That has to go, and we have to become more intellectual and humble, like Christians. Yes, English has to be made the language of Islam! And we need a European Islamic tradition in West, Russia and Latin America. I think Cambridge Muslim College, Zaytuna College and Al-Mahdi Institute in the US/UK are already doing this.

Imam al-Shafi was the only Imam among the four who actually was from the Prophet's tribe (Quraysh) and was the only one who was raised in Makkah the Prophet's birth place. He also was the most knowledgeable in the Arabic language because he used to keep company of Bedouins whose Arabic at the time was the most pure. I love all four Imams, but Sayyidna al-Shafi has a special place in my heart may God shower his mercy upon them all.

The opinion in the Islamic jurisprudence doesn't mean to neglect the Hadith, but it is the analogical reasoning in regard to the totality of Quran and Hadith and scholar consensus. Therefore, the opinion is restricted by the framework of Hadith and Quran and Islamic scholar consensus.
Thankyou for bringing up this amazing discussion about Imam As-Shafi'i, sir Paul. Most of our teachers and scholar here in Nusantara (Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and the Philippines) are teaching us how we practice Islam following this madzhab
Because of Southern Yemeni traders and scholars, al-Shafi's school is still practiced by many or most in Yemen, Dagestan Chechenyia, parts of east Africa, parts of coastal India, by a large population in Egypt, Syria, Iraq. Also by some families in Hijaz, and eastern Saudi Arabia.

I’ve first heard this episode when it came out. The debate story between Imam Ibn Hanbal and Imam Shaf’i @ 12:24 didn’t sit well with me. I've recently learned from @mshmsdin1 that the story of the debate isn’t authentic since it’s without isnad from a book by Al-Subki (who lived hundreds of years after both Imams and used the word “يحكى” Yūḥkā to start the narration which highlights its unreliability) and doesn’t even make sense in the matn(content). Ibn Othaimin discussed this, as can be found on his website. Basically, Ibn Hanbal’s mathab is that if someone becomes an apostate for a reason, they need to stop that thing they did to come back to Islam. In this case Imam Ibn Hanbal’s answer according to his Mathab should have been “To start praying again”.
As Salam alaykûm wa rahmatuLah ! As a Maliki I have to admit that imam Shafi'i perfected the jurisprudence... His methodology is the most complete... I have this book and I too found it a difficult read. It would be great if a scholar will use it as its source material and write a book on jurisprudence _using_ the passages in this book. Few people have mastery of the subject of Law. Even fewer can understand the theory of law (ie jurisprudence) just by reading this book
Gentle and noble demeanor presented here... not the Islam of boys with inferiority complexes waiting for the opportunity to burn the world down. Just one note, the earliest record of that tradition on knowing the people of truth is commonly attributed to Imam Ali...thought its worth crediting the correct source. Al-‘Utbi reported: Al-Harith ibn Hut came to Ali and he said to him, “Do you see that I think Talhah, Al-Zubayr, and Aisha have united upon falsehood?” Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “O rebel, you are confused! The thing that breaks my heart whenever I think about Imam Shafi'i Rehmat ULLAAHI alehi is that he was beaten to death by the Muslims who couldn't control their anger when he was giving arguments to highlight a mistake of Imam Malik Rehmat ULLAAHI alehi whom he, himself loved and respected a lot but found himself to be disagreeing with his ruling... It just breaks my heart what huge treasure of the Ummah was laid to waste by the fannatics at 55 (a relatively young age)... A stain on the history of the Ummah... A testimony to the fact how fannaticism has been setting the Ummah back all through it's history...
Just as a point of information regarding the debate between Imam Al-Shafi’ai and Imam Ahmad Bin Hanbal , the story is unauthentic as it doesn’t have a chain of narration , the person who mentioned it , Al-Subki ,lived in the 8th century AH and didn’t mention a chain. And Sheik Al-Albani said regarding it : “this story is unauthentic” Furthermore as others mentioned the content of the story itself presents very weak arguments from both sides which is unbefitting and doesn’t align with what we authentically know about the two imams and their debating skills
I stopped reading the Quran at about 10 chapters when I was a child because I felt it was too dystopic for me. That coupled with the grandiose fear of Allah in my house (that I should fear Allah and remember all the things Allah hated). All of this made me feel sad. Still, I prayed without anyone knowing and if anyone asked if I prayed, I said no. I felt that there was a beautiful Islam, full of love and peace and joy -- which is being hidden. When I listen to the Quran - I feel that an immense whale of the cosmos - an all encompassing energy field - is trying to communicate with us, to remove our pain, heal it with love, so that we can rise, transcend and know Allah better (the all encompassing energy field). Islam will only survive by making it easier for people to follow (less talk about punishment, and more about love - how Allah loves us). Islam will only survive if we incorporate beauty in our prayers, in our rituals and our places of worship. I do not believe our Prophet wanted us to emulate him (otherwise he would have had many portraits done!). I think he wanted us to follow the five pillars. I think we should debate the contents of the Quran. I do not believe that Allah - this infinite cosmic force - ordered us to beat our wives. When was this sura written down? What is the truth of it? Are we supposed to read the quran for its meaning or its SOUND? Thank you for your blog. ❤🙏🏾
May Allah guide you and us. Amen. That is the outcome of not having scholars behind you. As the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him said, scholars are the inheritors of the Prophet's. Every scholar was praised by previous Scholars, and it goes back to At-ba'a tabeen, and then tabeen and then sahabah and then the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him and may Allah be pleased with them all. There is no scholars in the West. Read the books of the salaf. Salaf-as-salih are the best 3 generations which the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him praised, namely, the sahabah, tabeen and At-ba'a tabeen. Shahru Sunnah by imam barbahari, imam muzani, imam Ibn Hanbal and so on, rahimahullah wa ghafarallah. You have al-bani, uthaymeen, fawzan and so on. May Allah have mercy upon them and may Allah preserve those who are still alive. Amen. Said that, the verse does *not* say, beat, that is the problem when you read the translation. You can never ever translate the Qur'an, you can translate the *Meaning of the Qur'an with Tafsir* ....
There is nothing in the Qur'an that suggests that a man is allowed to beat his wife . The Qur'an enjoins good treatment of one's wife:, she is to be honoured and treated kindly, even when one no longer feels love in one's heart towards her. Allah says, And live with them honourably. If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike a thing and Allah brings through it a great deal of good. [al-Nisa 4:19] The Qur'an explains that women have rights over their husbands , just as their husbands have rights over them. Allah says, And they (women) have rights (over their husbands as regards living expenses) similar (to those of their husbands) over them (as regards obedience and respect) to what is reasonable, but men have a degree (of responsibility) over them. And Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise [al-Baqarah 2:228] This verse indicates that the man has additional rights, commensurate with his role as protector and maintainer and his responsibility of spending (on his wife) etc. The Prophet peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) enjoined kind treatment and honouring of one’s wife, and he described the best of people as those who are best to their wives. He said:, The best of you are those who are the best to their wives, and I am the best of you to my wives.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3895; Ibn Majah, 1977; classed as sahih by al-Albani in Sahih al-Tirmidhi) The Prophet peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, spoke a beautiful word concerning kind treatment of one’s wife, stating that when the husband feeds his wife and puts a morsel of food in her mouth, he earns the reward of doing an act of charity. He said, you never spend anything but you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel of food that you lift to your wife’s mouth.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 6352; Muslim, 1628) The Prophet peace and blessings of Allah be upon him said, fear Allah with regard to women, for you have taken them as a trust from Allah and intimacy with them has become permissible to you by the words of Allah. Your right over them is that they should not allow anyone to sit on your furniture whom you dislike, if they do that then hit them but not in a harsh manner. And their right over you is that you should provide for them and clothe them on a reasonable basis.” Narrated by Muslim, 1218. Allah says, As to those women on whose part you see *ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (next) refuse to share their beds, (and last) hit them (lightly, if it is useful), but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance)* , Surely, Allah is Ever Most High, Most Great” [al-Nisa 4:34] If a woman rebels against her husband and disobeys his commands, then he should follow this method of admonishing her, forsaking her in bed and hitting her. Hitting is subject to the condition that it should not be harsh or cause injury. Hasan basri said: This means that it should not cause pain. ‘Ata said: I said to Ibn Abbas, what is the kind of hitting that is not harsh? He said, hitting with a siwak and the like. A siwak is a small stick or twig used for cleaning the teeth. The purpose behind this is not to hurt or humiliate the woman, rather it is intended to make her realize that she has transgressed against her husband’s rights, and that her husband has the right to set her straight and discipline her. Allah knows best.
You said , islam will only survive if we incorporate? This is statement is baatil (falsehood). You also said, Allah is a infinite force Cosmo? This is baatil also. If we wanna know about Allah, then we read the Qur'an, which is the word of Allah, and we go to His Prophet, becouse no one can explain the Qur'an better than the Prophet and His noble companions, becouse Allah ordered us to follow the companions. In the Qur'an, Allah says, He is above the throne Tabaraka Wata'ala, He Has Hands, Face, and so on. We affirm the meaning without negating, distorting the meaning, without saying how, without liking Allah to His Creation. Read the book of Asma wa sifaat, meaning, Names and Attributes of Allah. To know who really Allah is. Allah is The Forgiving, The Merciful, The All-seeing, All-powerful, All-Loving, but Allah is Also, The Just, The Supreme, The One who punish. The Mighty and so on. Allah has 99 Names. So, seek correct knowledge. May Allah give you a beneficial knowledge. Amen.

And some people will be claiming we shouldn't use our Aql/intellect in the deen 🤔, ( 3:13 ). Using logic or intellect does not supersede the Quran and hadith. That is what you were told. You cannot leave or abandon a verse of the Quran and saheeh hadith just because it's against your so called logic. The words of Allah, his Prophet and companions come first, 2nd and 3rd. Your opinion or intellect if at all is sound comes a distant down this chain.
@@saidhashi2856 There you go, another anti-intellectual rant. No one said anything about contradicting Qur'an and Sunnah, the problem with you guys is that you equate rationality to being against scripture, whereas it is supposed to be a neutral tool through which every capable human being should seek the truth.
There is definitely some exaggeratiom involved in the debate quote by Imam Shafai Rahimahullah. Such quotes are often counterproductive takes away the human element from great men. A more powerfull quote would have been I never debated anybody before fighting myself and remembering the fact that truth is what I am debating for and not to win unconditionally.. As an answer to the first five minuts of sweet introduction to this dialogue I would like to say that according to the Qur'an I am rude with the disbeliev and radically against the sects in Islam. We have all the fullness of choices and fatwas in the madhabs not to follow sectarian groups political positions and Aqeedah is not a philosophical subject. We do not debate about Allah anymore. We conform ourselves to what the first generations of courageous imams wrote about HIM taking for us the huge risk of doing shirk and we shut the mouth of our egos. period. This deen is not a child's play... So when I have muslims defending sectarian groups positions against the madhabs like the so called salafis and then also pretending to philosophize about Allah because they have red books from the 14th century of a certain shaykh they call shaykh al Islam, I have no choice than being rude with them to make them realize the fitna they are spreading. This way of talking to them is the only way that wakes them up... Now we find some of them pretending to be so called Salafis but Malikis at the same time to avoid being ridiculed... I have the same behaviour with the so called shi'as who curse A'isha, and the Califate of Abu Baqr, Umar ibn al Khattab and Uthman radhiAllahu anhum... This said let's say now that I only feel love for my brothers in Islam and I can give my life for them if needed. Talking about shi'as few people know that there is a madhab that is still applicable among them which is the madhab of imam Zayid... There are actually Five valid madhabs and not only four as it's commonly said...
@@T_K_R_G I am targetting the sects and the disbeliev and the way I talk to those who play with deen as if it was a game or a philosophy is to wake them up. I am not kind anymore with those who say Allahu Akbar before cutting the throat of a muslim... We are not in the 90's anymore... We have tried kindness with them for more than 20 years and it's not effective with Khawarij takfiri mentallity... Now we know who they are and we are rude with them because we love our brothers in Islam... The so called pious salafis are the useful idiots of muslims' massive killers... They kill our brothers mothers sons and daughters by millions using these sects... There is no place for sects in Islam. Period.
Narrated Abu Huraira: My friend (the Prophet (ﷺ) ) advised me to observe three things: (1) to fast three days a month; (2) to pray two rak`at of Duha prayer (forenoon prayer); and (3) to pray witr before sleeping. Sahih al-Bukhari 1981
It should be mentioned that Imam shafia,e learned most of his knowledge from lady Nafisah who was the grand daughter of Imam Hassan the grand son of prophet Muhammad S.A.W.S
The debate between al Shafii and Ahmad Bin Hanbal did not occur, you will not find it with an isnad, and majority of the salaf took the opinion that leaving salah is kufr, its the majority of later scholars who said it doesn't. also imam Ahmed doesn't say he has to say shahada but he says you have to pray to turn back to Islam. this story is disrespectful to imam Ahmed and a strawman.

Both Arabic and English are needed.
@@shahram6869
You are a good person, whatever you wrote is 100% correct.

Interesting to see that honestly considering that I'm shafi'i is originally from Palestine yet most of his mazhab followers are from nusantara.

Verily, truth and falsehood are not known by the statures of men. Know the truth and you will recognize its people. Know falsehood and you will recognize the one who brings it.”

A testimony to the fact how fannaticism has been setting the Ummah back all through it's history...

@@malekshishani5861 then please elaborate…
Just as a point of information regarding the debate between Imam Al-Shafi’ai and Imam Ahmad Bin Hanbal , the story is unauthentic as it doesn’t have a chain of narration , the person who mentioned it , Al-Subki ,lived in the 8th century AH and didn’t mention a chain.
And Sheik Al-Albani said regarding it : “this story is unauthentic”
Furthermore as others mentioned the content of the story itself presents very weak arguments from both sides which is unbefitting and doesn’t align with what we authentically know about the two imams and their debating skills
This man in the video claims to be a scholar 😂

Allah says,
And live with them honourably. If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike a thing and Allah brings through it a great deal of good. [al-Nisa 4:19]
The Qur'an explains that women have rights over their husbands , just as their husbands have rights over them. Allah says,
And they (women) have rights (over their husbands as regards living expenses) similar (to those of their husbands) over them (as regards obedience and respect) to what is reasonable, but men have a degree (of responsibility) over them. And Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise [al-Baqarah 2:228]
This verse indicates that the man has additional rights, commensurate with his role as protector and maintainer and his responsibility of spending (on his wife) etc.
The Prophet peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) enjoined kind treatment and honouring of one’s wife, and he described the best of people as those who are best to their wives. He said:, The best of you are those who are the best to their wives, and I am the best of you to my wives.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3895; Ibn Majah, 1977; classed as sahih by al-Albani in Sahih al-Tirmidhi)
The Prophet peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, spoke a beautiful word concerning kind treatment of one’s wife, stating that when the husband feeds his wife and puts a morsel of food in her mouth, he earns the reward of doing an act of charity. He said, you never spend anything but you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel of food that you lift to your wife’s mouth.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 6352; Muslim, 1628)
The Prophet peace and blessings of Allah be upon him said, fear Allah with regard to women, for you have taken them as a trust from Allah and intimacy with them has become permissible to you by the words of Allah. Your right over them is that they should not allow anyone to sit on your furniture whom you dislike, if they do that then hit them but not in a harsh manner. And their right over you is that you should provide for them and clothe them on a reasonable basis.” Narrated by Muslim, 1218.
Allah says, As to those women on whose part you see *ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (next) refuse to share their beds, (and last) hit them (lightly, if it is useful), but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance)* , Surely, Allah is Ever Most High, Most Great” [al-Nisa 4:34]
If a woman rebels against her husband and disobeys his commands, then he should follow this method of admonishing her, forsaking her in bed and hitting her.

Lol imagine failing so hard in history to say that Imam Ahmed is of the Ahul Hadith and not say that Ahul Hadith vs Ahul Opinion came up with Malik and Shafi and others vs Abu Hanafi. Also imagine you trying to make people think that your a scholar and mention a debate between Ahmed and Shafi that never happened and is a blatant lie on the two Imams 😂
How are you considered a scholar? The debate between Imam Ahmed and Imam Al Shafi never happened it’s a lie untrue. Also I dare you from the words of Malik or Shafi quote them saying the person that abandons prayer is still a Muslim. Do not bother you won’t find it. Because only later scholars say this.
