    26:05 A rule I learned a long time ago: The roots extend outward as far as the plant’s above ground branches. A potted plant constrains the roots. Put into the ground, the plant’s first priority is to push its roots outward in all directions. If the soil six inches from the plant’s center is packed like concrete, the roots first expand quickly into the loose soil added when planting. But when they hit the wall of packed concrete soil, growth stalls. It’s more work, believe me I know, but digging planting holes both deeper and wider than the size the plant pot requires and gardening books say is worth it in the long run. The glaciers eons ago did an excellent job of packing the soil of my property. Putting in any new plant is a multi-day project. Map out and clear new area. Dig up hummus rich soil; I don’t buy compost-nature has given me plenty. Dig sandy soil and some clay soil out of the planting area and high spots elsewhere on the property. Mix the soils. Continue to dig deeper and outward in the hole. Save the unused sandy soil for dikes around the finished planting. Plant only when hole is deep and wide enough. Yank root ball apart-delicately. Mound the bottom of the hole. Position plant an inch deeper than top of the pot’s soil. Place roots-place, don’t plop-spreading them out. Water. Add more soil. Water. Add soil to top. Shape dike of sandy, clayish soil in a circle around the plant. Water up to top of dike. Wait. Water the same way again. Pray, planting done. I only lose a plant if 1) I didn’t plant deep enough, 2) the hot house plant can’t make it in my planting zone despite what the folks at the nursery said and the number on the plant’s tag reads. Many new gardeners blame themselves for new plants found dead, but it just may be a greenhouse plant, coddled and cuddled there, just can’t make it in the real world.

    Don't worry about that willowherb! I 'kept' a lovely looking purple flower climber into a pot for two weeks before I found out it was a nightshade! Would have acted just like bindweed, with the bonus of being dangerous lol!

    Always tease out the roots on newly planted shrubs and perennials as it helps the roots get out and Into the soil 👍🏻

    • @AndyMac
      @AndyMac  6 місяців тому

      I've heard two schools of thought on that! Some gardeners say it causes more harm than good. I sometimes do it if I can be bothered. 👍😁

      @user-fv8rn4gi3x 6 місяців тому

      @@AndyMac yeah I get what your saying I’d always tease out roots of plants where the roots are circling round the pot or you just get them doing the same once planted and trust me I’ve dug out plants that have done exactly that in clients gardens all because they just dug a whole and plonked them in. I can see the other side of tha argument where people think your damaging the roots etc but that’s not if your going at them at full force 👍🏻

    Couple of tips: 1. When you take any plant out of a pot then tease out the roots, don't worry if some of them break, it will stimulate new root growth.
    2. In all honesty, watch Gardener's World. You will learn so much from Monty Don and the team.
    Rosemary hates wet claggy soil and loves drainage and full sun. My garden is the same orientation as yours, I would never put Lavender or Rosemary down that side, it would never survive the winter.

    • @AndyMac
      @AndyMac  6 місяців тому +1

      Cheers! I'm a huge fan of Monty - have most of his books. I think I've just got complacent over the years with rosemary & lavender. Grown it for years and never had any issues. Now I know it's not indestructible. 😂👍

    When you plant anything, water it in. Rosemary is easy from cuttings. If you feed and support your peonies, they will get better year on year . As always, great content.

    One house we built had a bed beside the house wall that was warm and sheltered from the climate issues and I planted new for several years. Despite doing all the right stuff nothing survived. The third year I decided the soil and drainage had to be at fault and started digging it up to add more compost etc. Not very deep down I found it was all rubble made up of plasterboard, broken bricks, plastic pipe pieces, all sorts of building debris. The builder had used the area as a dump then tossed some soil over it to make it look nice. Cost me a lot replacing those plants and the dirt too. I was so mad. Happy ending, my third planting survived but, live and learn. Dig deeper! 🤷😉

    Dry shade under trees: pulmonaria, vinca major or minor, primroses, hardy geraniums, helebores, ferns. Lots do well flowering in spring before the canopy is in leaf and yes break up the top soil and add gravel to the whole bed. Most of my garden borders are tree shaded and are beautiful in winter, spring and autumn.

    Thanks for the update Andy, sketchy tree lopping has been exactly what I've been doing the last few weeks, I was going to say a polesaw would be a useful addition also worth getting a telescopic pruner - Wolfgarten do an excellent one with a tilting cutter but you are talking around £100 but well worth it (don't be tempted to save a few quid with the non-tilting version) !
    To keep cats and birds off your seeded soil you could of course put down some mesh/net, but actually at this time of year when the soil is nice and damp and it's still pretty cold you can even pin down some clear polythene which also gives some heat !
    Looks like that path between the raised beds is just waiting for your shredded prunings !
    Yep, I was saying to the TV - Andy, that looks like willow herb to me, I too have spent a lot of time cultivating weeds over the years !
    Would be worth also getting some horticultural grit to improve drainage but if you're a tight@rse like me you can put cheap as chips regular 10mm shingle through a 5mm riddle ( sieve ), about 20% is smaller stuff, which is also ideal, and you can use the remaining 80% for planting shrubs or topping up your paths !

    • @AndyMac
      @AndyMac  6 місяців тому

      Great tips - cheers! At the moment I don't even have a watering can never mind a sieve 😂. Well, I do have a watering can but it has a giant hole in it and it's held together with gaffer tape. Now that my bench is done I can treat myself to some new garden toys. 👍😁

    I highly recommend a Bahco Laplander folding pruning saw. They perfect for this type of work and despite the relatively small size they will still go through large diameter wood with ease when needed. Also if you don't want to get a telescopic pole saw you can firmly tape the Bahco saw to a long length of wood and you now have a high reach pruning saw. It is far safer than pruning off a ladder. Trust me spend the ~£20-£25 on the Bahco Lapander and it will soon become one of your must need tools.

    • @AndyMac

    If the pigeons get your grass seed, next time put some damp compost and seed in a plastic bag, seal it & let it germinate inside. When green shoots are showing sprinkle it onto the lawn where you want it to grow. The green shoots you have put into pots are weeds.

    • @Flibbles
      @Flibbles 6 місяців тому

      you can also spread the seed on the ground then water and cover the patch with a clear plastic bag (mini greenhouse)

    A tip for ladder climbing: I have a 2 metre paracord clove-hitched to the top rung that I can quickly loop around a branch/trunk and tie off. It aids stability and can prevent sudden movement. I get nervous at 6 metres so this helps :) Having noted your chainsaw skills I need help with 30, 15 metre conifers if you're at a loose end. Haha!

    "And this twig is still alive.." classic😂. Did you know that lavenders do really well in patio tubs? I've just cleared a garden over a couple of years, and without any watering at all, there is a big lavender in a big tub that has thrived over the last 3 or 4 dry summers!

    Astilbe is sleeping.
    That shady bed would benefit a lot from a whole bulk bag or two of compost as mulch. The compost would feed the soil and the worms would drag it through the clay. Not the cheapest thing in the world, but it would really get it going.
