I bring what I need for each day, and usually wear a button up sweater and cashmere wrap/sweater on the plane. Sure you can mix and match, but don’t sit upwind of other diners if it’s your 2nd wear day and you’ve been everywhere on foot. Please. Showering does not improve the smell on your clothes and neither does perfume. 60 years traveling and 20 total years living outside the States is enough to know there is no substitute for clean. Packing light is a personal option, but give the rest of us a break and find a laundromat.
Cashmere, linen, cotton and natural blend lightweight fabrics are available to almost every person who travels. Find a tjmaxx. White jeans and a French striped shirt have replaced yoga gear for travel. Chic women wear them at all ages. Your clothes were fine, but there’s no reason to pack schlep when presentable is just as easy. And let’s face it, most people pack schlep.

Also , with a carry on suitcase and a backpack one can get by for multiple days. A friend of mine travels for 2 to 3 weeks like this. Usually you can wash your clothes in the bathroom sink and let them dry overnight . Make sure to bring clothes that dry quickly.

When we traveled I studied and researched packing light.
I got pretty good at it.
Basically I discovered that what you use at home everyday you used in Europe everyday.
I decided doing hand laundry was far easier than fighting heavy bags.
Try to book hotels with laundries and wash a batch of clothes weekly! Laundry “sheets” are TSA safe and nearly weightless.
Now this might not be good for everybody but you can carry everything in two shopping bags! They are durable and weigh mere ounces. You can add a strap to close them tight.
Uniqlo has Down Jackets that weigh ounces and are very warm. Add a pair of lightweight long johns for more warmth. A light wool beanie weighs a few ounces.
I go with 3-4 sets of clothes, one worn, and this is the bulk of the weight I carry.
If you need a lap top, get a smaller one and wrap it in a pair of jeans for protection.
You can simply pocket many smaller items.
I hope this helps. As I stated, it’s not for everybody.
    Thanks!

Yeah it's so annoying that no matter how fancy a hotel is, it always has a super low-watt dryer, which is just not an option for most people who are needing to dry their hair. One either needs to be able to bring a lot of hair product on a plane to manage the frizz that comes from any low wattage dryer, or have a high wattage dryer.

Cubes are fine as long as you're not under a carry-on weight limit. Use different sizes of a quality ziplock bag for everything. Put some clothes in a 2+ gallon bag, zip them closed except for a small space, roll the bag with clothes towards the ziplock, close the zipper an you create a compressed lightweight packing cube. Undies can be done in a gallon bag. This is lighter, less expensive and easy to see everything in the bag. Wife and I did 3 weeks in Europe with 10kg carry on, using lightweight (1 pound) packable backpacks. Did laundry 1 time half way through using packed detergent and dryer sheets.

Great tips-thanks !! One to share...for a 2 1/2 week trip around Scotland I unzipped the bottom lining of my Sherpani bag and packed some items around the metal framework of the bag itself-kind of an unused space I think! Also just used it again for 4 days in Santa Fe so I could bring home bags of coffee I can't buy at home! LOVE my packing cubes and they are cheapies from IKEA years ago.

I always take an empty Eagle Creek Pack-It Isolate packing cube (medium) for dirty socks and underwear so I can keep smelly items separate from clean clothes if I have to repack my luggage mid trip to change locations. It's also great for isolating damp swimsuits when it's time to pack.

The 3x3 method is intriguing. I am a bit disappointed in me that this hasn't come to my mind yet😂. I will try this for my trip next week. I cannot bring my family of four to travel hand luggage only, but we only ever need one checked bag and small backpacks for everyone. This is okay for now.

    Yes, all of this!
I am a eco-friendly/barefoot shoe girl, which can save space. My barefoot shoes and sandals and slippers pack pretty flat, and the thinner sole takes up much less room. I also use shampoo/conditioner/face wash/moisturizer/and body soap bars. They save space and last so much longer than the regular stuff… plus, just like those containers, the more you use them the smaller they get.. And I bring laundry detergent sheets, which take up virtually no space. I’m going on a five week trip to the UK and Ireland with just carryon and a backpack.

For myself, I can remember when people traveled they would take a couple of suitcases and a cosmetic bag which a person could check all of this or maybe just carry your little cosmetic bag on the plane. There was no issue with the liquids which as you may recall, was due to the mishap, they had one time. I still like to check my bags. If you get an American Airlines credit card, you get one free suitcase checked I feel like we have entered a period where we have had to go backwards from where we were before. But if you are 30 or younger you don’t rememberhow nice it was.

Also for people that pack their compression cubes to the max, I found a little trick on another video that works really well. Instead of struggling to zip the compression zipper after packing - zip it first then put your items in and just zip the main zipper.
I just discovered packing cubes and absolutely love them. I have several different sets and sizes. I use them weekly. It's fun to see the different ways to pack. I've been using them in a suitcase, but have switched to a travel backpack. I always pack 2 weeks of clothes.

I don’t take any hair appliances with me. I usually just use whatever is in the hotel where we are staying. I’m not real fussy about that. Plus lucky for me or unlucky… 😊My hair is dry so I wash my hair two times a week. So I might use a hairdryer once, on vacation. I’ll bring clothing or shoes that are on their last leg so to speak and will pitch what I can before coming home which leaves room for a souvenir of clothing or two.😊

Thank you! Would have loved for you to detail the PJ issue, though - for all the detail we got about outfits, what's the PJ strategy? There are so many variables lots of extra PJs can mitigate when traveling so it would be helpful to know what you did there. Also, really glossed over the pods and it was hard to follow the specifics that would inevitably come up like folding size being really important and the pods not being color coded or having a label option to them. Would love to see some pod bags that are designed to address that. Thanks!

Also, it feels like we’re going backwards when we fly because in the past, they used to actually give very nice meals. Can you imagine lobster dinner on a flight from Dallas to California ? For most flights, It was meals, consisting of chicken ,salad, peas, and a dessert . For children, they would give milk, and for adults, tea, coffee or adult beverages. Of course these were times when the airplanes were not so packed. Can you also imagine being able to recline in your chair enough to sleep for over sees trips and people sitting by the window would not disturb you because there was enough room to go around, the people in the row. The reason this changed was because through engineering they were able to make planes carry more weight therefore they could put more people on and therefore you now see the result. Sometimes progress in one area is not progress for the humans.
My husband is an aerospace engineer.

But your suggestion about the two pair of shoes would work nicely if you were not going to meetings or professional outings. The tennis shoes and the sandals would work for most people. Weight and size limits are going to be the biggest hurdle though, especially if you travel overseas as many airlines limit you to about 25-26 lbs total (and this includes the weight of your bag, which could be 5-6 lbs empty). Of course if you're flying on airlines like Delta who have a generous 50 lb carry-on limit, and don't seem to check bag sizes as long as it fits in the overhead bin, I've taken 7-8 days worth of clothes (partially by reusing pants for 2 days each though, so only packing 4 pairs). But airlines are cracking down on the weight restrictions and size limitations it seems, as a means to get more people to pay for checked bags. In fact most airlines (other than Frontier and Spirit) don't seem to care how much your carry-on weighs as long as it fits in the bin (never had issues with Southwest, Delta, or United at least, but again, these were only domestic flights--international is different).
For liquids, I generally try to buy what I need at my destination if I can (I know it means spending some money but visiting say a WalMart or Traget at your destination can be helpful). I generally only bring the liquids I can't get at my destination, or from a hotel. So being a male, I don't need too much personally and almost sometimes just travel with an electric razor, some shaving creme (in a travel container that's very small), toothbrusth & toothpaste and maybe a small travel size of mouthwash (although I can usually buy this where I'm going, but this is for emergencies mainly).

This is all fairly familiar to me. I just wouldn’t pack a hair dryer because many hotels have them any way. Also, white in SF totally marks you out as a tourist. Same for NYC and probably many other places around the world. That also goes for white shoes outside the country too, and it’s not necessarily a safe thing to stand out as American. So, I never travel with white clothing or shoes.

I don't agree with bringing only 1 USB-C cable, even if all your devices only use USB-C. I recommend getting a brick that can charge at least 2 devices at the same time. You don't want to be going to sleep and having to wake up half way through sleeping just to switch the device you're charging. Cables take up almost no space. There's also a chance they can break or get lost, so it is good to have spares. But if you're super minimalist with just an iPhone and Airpods, then you'll probably be fine.
I usually bring at least 2 smartphones, airpods, action camera, macbook. So I have a few devices that might need to be charged.

    I couldn't follow how the lines in the scheme translate into 27 looks but anyway it's just combinations from math: 3 x 3 x 3 = 27 :)
I'd probably pack one less layer because if it's warm enough, no layer is also a look :) which otherwise brings in 9 more looks (3 tops x 3 bottoms).
I do more or less the same when I pack depending on the length of the journey (if it's just 4 days, I stick, to 2 tops x 2 bottoms), but it's important to make sure that everything goes with everything in this 'capsule' :)
Also, adding a dress makes me feel prepared for whatever happens while on a trip xD

may i ask what time of year you visited San Fran please? we went in the summer, had a fabulous time seeing all the sites, including Murr woods, Coat tower, P39, Alcatraz and the bridge, vent to the bridge a few times but sadly always shrouded in mist. your clip of a clear sky is beautiful and you see the magnificent bridge for all its finery. Love from the UK

Don’t feel like you have to buy souvenirs. T shirts-ok you’ll wear them. Other things- they gather dust. I stopped buying souvenirs when I saw them In trash cans once l left the room.

Honestly, souvenirs usually become clutter surprisingly fast. That cute doodad just doesn’t look the same when you get home.
That said, I have bought some things I couldn’t find at home.
I ship them home. Just find the closest shipping place, like UPS in the US, or post office. They also usually have boxes.

@@rnguyen2516I bought them for our last trip to Spain for almost a month and LOVED THEM, by the time the trip is over, they will be practically empty, a great tip before you fill them is to blow some air in them to expand (like blowing a balloon) and they will be 100% easier to fill, also tap them on a surface as you fill them with thicker products like lotion.

3 tops could work. I just returned from a 6D/5N trip. I packed 2 tops, wore third on travel day. I also used my 2 PJ tops [a long-sleeved tunic and a T shirt] for lounging in the hotel and cover-up.

I wear plus sizes 2xl and 3xl, so clothes are huge - but it CAN be done. Takes a lot of research, planning, and testing. What works for me is: packing and wearing VERSATILE items. I focus on tunic tops - they double as dresses, cover-ups, PJs. For color I take many scarves/sarongs/shawls. My liquids fit in a snack size baggie. I don't wear makeup, and my hair style is naturally curly - so I can use the hotel's free toiletries. I don't have tyo pack many toiletries.
I also use deodorant towelette packs for trips - I don't take a bulky item. I wash panties in sink one night. I wear a spaghetti strap camisole/bra (Roaman's) on Travel day and pack one regular bra. For swimsuit, I take a tankini top and a black boy-shorts swim bottom (New Balance). Both versatile and can be worn around town.
It's my meds that are my downfall. I'm a senior and just had hip replacement surgery - had to take a train case full of meds!
Finally, I ONLY travel during warm summer months.

    • @nuvoclassic
      @nuvoclassic 2 місяці тому +1

I take a travel water spray bottle. Hang stuff up at destination, fill spray bottle with water, and lightly spray front sides and back. Or nix the bottle and steam clothes in bathroom with hot shower and closed door. I only travel with these fabrics; rayon/Tencel/bamboo, silk, merino wool, nylon, satin, polyester. I roll my clothes in compression cubes. I wear light cotton hooded sweater, not pack it....

I pack whatever I think I would need as long as I am within the allowed limits for the checked baggage. There is nothing more frustrating than having to search for overhead space and to lift a heavy load over my head to fit into a tight space.
Why do we all need to be like everyone else; do we all have to be and look like a carbon copy of each other in every aspect of our lives?
I have seen too many tourists dressed like they were going to the grocery store.
