While positivity is great, too much can be a bad thing. You mainly discussed the community, but too much positivity can also be bad for the writer. Positive feedback is great, but the downside of too much is that the writer may actually become over confident and borderline arrogant about their own abilities. There's this kid who goes to school with me (but he'll be on his own come this time next year) who probably NEVER heard a single negative thing about his artwork, writing, etc., so of course when he came to our lunch table of mainly art and literature enthusiasts, he was immediately trying to become the head of our group as the best at drawing, the best at writing, the best at ANYTHING artistic. I kept my mouth shut until finally he pushed me overboard and I yelled at him, calling him out mainly on his ego. Now he's sane and we critique each other's stories online so we can improve our skills as writers. However, I don't think EVERY overly egotistic person can be straightened out. A lot of them, especially if they only go to positive blogs, might just "block out the haters". Blogs with mixed opinions are better for writers who genuinely want to improve. They'll be able to get feedback on what's great, what's not so great, so on and so forth. Plus, mixed opinions allow for more discussion and can allow room for more theories on where the show's headed, which is always fun.
JasminePaygeBrooke And that's why there needs to be criticism. Honestly it's probably why I am not arrogant.(A lot of my videos are not that good. But I try to improve to satisfy my fans as little as my Sub Count is) So yeah I don't want to ever get into cocky territory.(It's something I worry about if I ever get a lot of subs in the future) I mean Mr. Enter did get really arrogant once he got a lot of Subs.(Honestly he thinks he better than other people. I mean in a followup to his Troll video he said this:"You wonder why I haven't blocked you yet? 1. That was someone else's video not mine and 2. it's so that people can see your ignorance!!!!" That screams I am better than you. I honestly want him to apologize and go back to his more calmer days.) So yeah I agree too much praise is bad for anyone. I also have to say ***** how come you still Mr. Enter videos?(Or is it just because you guys are friends?) I mean the guy hasn't been the same to me.(And that Troll video basically to me made me lose all of my respect for Mr. Enter. He was so ignorant about what a Troll is. How the fuck do people even defend that video? Trolling is a lot different than Cyberbullies you Mr. Enter fans!!!-_- And honestly blocking people because they could counter that point is in a way a dick move.)
***** While it can drive a person to pursue their passion more, too much positivity can drive a person to over-confidence. It can, but that doesn't mean it will. In your case, it's great that you have the approval of the writer (actually that's not just great, that's amazing!) However, too much of a good thing is never a good thing, as the old cliché goes. Unless something is flawless - which is pretty much impossible because there are just so many people out there with so many conflicting opinions - then getting some criticism is good for pointing out weaknesses. If everyone only ever tells you it's perfect, you're not going to change it, even if there is a big flaw, and you may take negative criticism a little too hard when it actually crops up because you're just so not used to it. (Overly nasty comments though, I'd like to add, are never good. "You should stop doing this because you suck at it" is never warranted.)
Super Gamer61499 Mr. Enter may be a bit controversial in the respect that he has been on UA-cam for some time, but is still relatively new and still has to figure himself out. I'm not too good at critiquing people as a whole but I'll leave it at that. Criticism can be harsh, but it can be beneficial as long as no one goes completely overboard.
Jonny Boy Alright. I will admit when Nintendo fucks up they fuck up. I am just a fan not a fanboy.(Big difference) I mean honestly Mario Party is starting to get really stale, I didn't like the concept of Paper Mario Sticker Star,(Which honestly for an RPG it's not even an RPG! I have to blame Shegieru for fucking up the game) Metroid Other M sounds really bad from what I heard, and the lists goes on.(Prepare the hate Fanboys I don't care)
This also applies to fanboys of UA-cam channels. For example, there's this reviewer who is overly negative in his reviews that has over 100K subs. But because my friend called this reviewer out on his arrogance and his inability to take criticism, the fanboys responded saying my friend is wrong and they don't bother to elaborate each of the points my friend brought up are "wrong.". I hate fanboys so much. Nothing is perfect.
Yup. People like to live by this rule of "You're allowed to have an opinion, it just can't be negative." They won't outright say it, but that's definitely what they mean.
This is why I love your channel. It is a place where anyone and everyone can discuss their opinions without getting trashed for being wrong. I really love reading the honest opinions people have of a show. Not every show is perfect and I have admitted before that certain episodes of shows I'm a huge fan of weren't my cup of tea and have explained why. I love a good spirited debate. I try to avoid the overly positive sites for the very reasons you have described. I just hope that you don't have too many subscribers who hate on anyone who doesn't say something nice about a show you have reviewed or hated on you for your opinions. As always I will keep coming back and watching your videos because you give honest (not sugarcoated) opinions on a wide variety of shows and if you don't review a show that others (and myself) think would be interesting for you to review, you always have very sound reasons for why you can't bring yourself to do it just yet or at all.
Don't forget the crazy shippers! I'm a huge Steven Universe fan and I follow SU accounts on Instagram. One day one of the accounts posted pictures of pearl and amethyst ship pictures, and I casually commented (saying as carefully as possible) on how I didn't really like the ship because there was no evidence to back it up on the show.I got BOMBED. So many people were mad. I mean I ship in the show too, but some people take their ship way too personality!
Jimmy Bob There's literally people who ship Pearl and Connie. I'm pretty sure an immortal over thousand years old shipped with someone who seems to be 10-12 is REALLY creepy.
EYBOI I don't really understand why you would post a comment if you didn't like the ship? Unless the ship was really creepy (Pearl x Connie, Rose x Steven) I don't see why you would say that. As long as they're not being crazy towards you or others and not hurting you with their ship I advise you just exit out of the page and move on.
Both positive comments and negative comments have pros and cons. Positive comments can make you happy and feel that your work payed off. But too much positive, then you may get an ego or not improve. Negative comments can help you improve, but they can sometimes be hurtful, and some don't want you to improve and just want you to stop (troll comments.) So really you do have to have both, but seed through negative comments to know which ones will actually help you. I have experienced comments for having a different opinion. Sometimes they are justified, maybe I made an error. Other times it's people who can't handle saying anything bad. I don't like 2001: A Space Odyssey. I said this, comments came in saying I just didn't get it, I have to watch it again, stuff like that. But there were comments that understood why I wasn't a fan, and agreed to disagree.
I don't know if I've ever experienced something like that before, but I do remember a few times where I just state my opinion and lots of people bombarded me, like the time that ranked my favorite Super Smash Bros games and lots of Super Smash Bros. fanboys attacked me like crazy. Here's how I look at fanbases. Level 1-Awesome Level 2-Pretty Good (Ex: a few rock band fanbases maybe Kiss I think) Level 3-Healthy...for the Most Part (Ex:MARVEL Fanbase) Level 4-Alright (Ex:Spongebob Fanbase) Level 5-Unpredictable/Middle Ground (Ex:My Little Pony fanbase/Bronies) Level 6-Bad (Ex:Mr. Enter's Fanbase aka EnterBots and Animation Snobs/Fanboys) Level 7-Bad to the Bone (Ex: Star Wars Fan Base and Super Smash Bros Fanbase) Level 8-Worst of the Worst (Ex:Star Trek, DC Comics, and Sonic Fanbase) Level 9-NOT HUMAN!! (Batman Fanbase)
Jonny Boy Really, the highest level is the Batman Fanbase, I've never thought of the Batman fanbase as like, the worst of the worst. I thought it would be something like Call of Duty fans or something. Not that I agree. For me, a fanbase is usually always stuck with a few nuts in there. But if you were to take the entire group and look it over, the bad ones will likely only take up a small minority. We just don't talk or recognize the ones who just enjoy something.
+lukerbom12 the most common criticism I see is that he is too nit picky, and always overreacts to minor things. And that somehow the fans are stupid for enjoying his vids. Tbh I could care less, I think he's ENTERtaining (laugh track)
Oldschoolnintendogamer I've seen plenty of balance between negative and positive opinions, although I will say there are times when they can be overly positive and negative.
Alright, so I have a Tumblr account which I go on frequently and from what I've experienced I feel that it is mostly a site filled with a variety of opinions of certain fandoms mostly consisting of cartoons, and yes, I do find that certain people on that site CAN get pretty irritating while discussing said opinions. The community of Tumblr is definitely NOT perfect and I can definitely see why the site is not for everyone, however, the reason why I like it in particular is because of it's variety of views and opinions that I mentioned earlier, what could be considered horrible to me can be considered wonderful to someone else, and I find that very fascinating especially when that someone expresses why that "something" is wonderful to them in well explained matter. So I guess you can you say I'm on the same boat with +PIEGUYRULZ since I have a fondness for widespread opinions rather then just straightforward positive or negative opinions:)
Tumblr is almost too negative. Everyone and everything is "problematic" if there's a mistake made, and if you don't agree that that part of the show is horrible, no matter how trivial the reason, you are the worst person in the world. I've been called all sorts of -phobics, and -ists for disagreeing with people's overly negative(or overly positive!) opinions.
I don't really like all the hate Tumblr gets (my favorite is how some people will legit *create Tumblr accounts for the pure purpose of complaining about Tumblr,* which is hilarious), but there is a good amound of pretty nasty negativity there (but Tumblr's not special in that way; you can find nastiness on any social media site. It just varies site to site).
Ah, fandom mob mentality. It exists. ...In just about every fandom, actually. To some extent, at least. It's easy to attack someone for disagreeing with you when you've got a lot of other people sharing your opinion backing you up.
Katz Yeah. I can see why you may not like that episode. The episode was mostly just humor and if you did not like the jokes then I suppose it would be a bad episode for you. I found the jokes really funny and play D&D. So it was great for me. Sorry you got so down voted! :)
RidleyKraid187 Reason why I disliked it was because I'm not a huge fan of board games and know almost nothing about D&D so I missed out on a lot of jokes. Plus, some of the jokes just didn't come off as funny or made me uncomfortable, not sexually uncomfortable or anything, just confused about what was funny.
With the meta jokes I understand. That episode's comedy was nothing like normal. My theory is they had to do references and parodies because of how limited the characters and settings were. Mabel and Dipper by themselves are boring characters, and when it's mainly them and only a few others, it gets a little boring. They get their humor from talking to different personalities, and after the same characters talk to them, it gets old. TL;DR I agree, the episode had different comedy because of Dip and Mabel
This video is so important. Too many people think you have to like the whole package in order to truly appreciate it. Criticism isn't a real thing to them. It really annoys me to no end at the circlejerks (been on reddit too long, sorry) that ensue. The thing is though, I can't even say "well in the real world..." because irl people do this shit too way too often. Especially with social media. But that's what comes with anonymity I guess, lol.
I know some groups that are like what Pieguy is saying. Overly positive groups that sound nice on paper, but aren't. I learned the hard way, in an old Facebook Group I was in, that sharing a negative opinion in the positive discussion groups, even if it was just small and not directing towards anyone, will get you smacked down big time. It was an opinion on a ship that the fandom seemed to love but I couldn't get into it. I tried watching videos and looking at fanart to get into this ship. However, I just couldn't see the appeal in it. So it wasn't my thing. So I go to my old group and I said I tried, but I just couldn't get into it. And I said afterwards that I had nothing against the shippers and it was just something I felt. No bashing, no calling names, nothing. I get flamed up the wazoo. I was shown "evidence" that the ship was "canon". And some people said I HAD to like it or I wasn't a true fan. I left that group, needless to say. I actually hate that ship now. However, this is why I have a hard time expressing some of my opinions. Also why I don't want to say what it was a group of or what ship it was. I am warning you now that those overly positive fan sites or groups will hurt you if you are not careful. It is okay to dislike something, it is okay to find nothing wrong with something, it is okay to share an unpopular opinion. Just be nice about sharing those opinions though. This is why I prefer groups with multiple opinions. Because I know that while I may still get flack, I know there will be at least one person who will agree with me and maybe I could see the different points of views.
***** If you must know, it was a My Little Pony ship. And it involved two of the main characters. I am a little shy stating that because well, many many many people on UA-cam hate MLP fans for the same reason Pieguy is stating here. And honestly, I won't disagree on some of the reasons. Some fans can be... loony to put it lightly! I am not one of those fans. In fact, I am quite embarrassed by my own fandom nowadays. But I will say it. . . . . . . . . It was Applejack/Rainbow Dash. And the old MLP group I was in practically worship that ship (no pun intended)! That group overreacted as if I was saying it was the worst thing ever and to dislike that ship was a sin! Well, I hate it now thanks to them trying to shove it in my face. This is also why I don't get into shipping in groups anymore. I keep ships to myself and some very close friends.
Kenneth Dinkleburg Ship is a pairing of two characters, usually romantically. It's a shortening of "Relationship". When someone says they ship two (or more) characters, that means that they see them as a potential couple.
+Angel Gonterman I'm in the MLP fandom myself, and I find myself eternally frustrated by the nonstop shipping. I try to keep "difference of opinion" in mind, but some "opinions" are so far detached from reality you have to wonder what they're even based on. I never got AJ/RD myself as the only "evidence" on it is based on false representation, and my dislike of various ships is because of how they're treated as canon based on nothing. I try to respect other people's opinions but when those opinions are based on falsehoods, it feels like I'd be supporting a lie. Twilight / Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy / Rainbow Dash, Rarity / Applejack, Twilight / Trixie are all ships I oppose because...they're just not right for each other.. I don't mind shipping in moderation, but people take it way to far. Mercifully, I haven't had the same experience you had, being flamed like that, but the more these ships are shoved in my face, the less patience I have for them. There are certainly sane shippers out there, I myself likeTwilight x Fluttershy, but by no means to I think it HAS to happen, nor wil I hate on anyone who just isn't into it. The problem is, the sane shippers and fans are quieter, so they're harder to notice, but as other people have reassured me, they ARE there, just harder to spot ;)
The Steven Universe fanbase is TOXIC. say one bad thing about Lapis Lazuli, BAM! Pariah! Don't like Ruby or Sapphire? You're a conservative nut who is against same-sex marriages! I get chastised for hating LARS of all people, a character I'm pretty sure we're supposed to hate! The only time I received comparable treatment was back when I was supporting Ridley for Smash, and even then, it didn't affect how I felt about the series. with Steven Universe, I practically want it to END so people will forget about it and move on, and I'm a fan of the show!
RidleyKraid187 People usually say that about every fanbase. *insert fanbase* is toxic. My own way of dealing with fandoms is I really just watch the show or just share how much I like it on twitter,Facebook, not exactly fansites. Personally I hope Steven Universe continues for a while cause I felt like I FINALLY found another cartoon I could watch and get into.
DEATHxTHExKIDx1 True. I guess for me, losing SU wouldn't be TOO much of a hit, seeing as how I've still got Gravity Falls, Gumball, Star Vs. the Forces of Evil, and Heck, SpongeBob's starting to improve too! plus, I mostly watch the Gameshow Network anyways, only really tuning into those other shows for new episodes, or when nothing's on. On another note, here's another example of the fandom turned psycho: a while back, a storyboard artist for TTG! had drawn a fanmade "promotional image" for a "Titans Bomb", made in parody of the Steven Bombs: snaggle-teeth.tumblr.com/image/122782485177 The response was OVERWHELMINGLY negative, and the majority were from SU fans, chastising the man for even DARING to associate that TTG! rabble with "Their Beloved, Holy Show"! , and I felt extremely sorry for him. guilt by association to the highest degree. this is what Fandoms do- they hold their subjects on a pedestal, and talk down anyone who dare talk bad about it. I'm not a fan of TTG!, but I do believe it gets WAY more hate than it actually deserves
RidleyKraid187 Are we supposed to hate Lars? I suppose...to a degreee...yeah. He does selfish things, but he also does have some redeeming qualities to him. He's a realistic kinda guy. I happen to like Lars as a character, but I definitely could see why people wouldn't like him. Anyway. yeah, the community for most things are shit. Just realize that and try to find the people who will have an honest discussion.
SlipperySnaggleFoot I think it was the first few episodes in season 1 that put them off. I still don't understand why people act like he's a stupid child or not an accurate child because you must not be around many children if you think that way.
***** I love the show, but it's not for everyone and i feel that will be your opinion, i have a feeling you won't like it but IMDB gave it a higher rating than SU and Adventure Time
+PIEGUYRULZ Well, I'd say its good, and I encourage you to try some more. It's kind of a fun, campy, slice-of-life series, like Clarence, only with bears, and they're not kids. It's got good enough humor and a great deal of heart, but I wouldn't say that it's a must-see spectacular show, and I can see people not finding it that interesting enough, so just see it for yourself, I guess. My recommendation for the best episode to watch is definitely the episode "Burrito". It's got good humor, hits all the right emotions, and like pretty much everyone else has pointed out, it's essentially the SpongeBob episode "To Love A Patty" done RIGHT.
I think this issue goes beyond just cartoon/show forums. It's good advice to take into account no matter where you're voicing your opinion or what you're voicing your opinion on (UA-cam isn't always the best place to do this). :)
I'm excited that Pieguy is staring to do more of these opinion pieces on hot button topics that interweave with the normal reviews that he does. He shows he's more than fair when it comes to the more controversial topics and it gives more insight into what goes on in his head when he's trying to pull together thoughts for a review. Regarding this video in particular, what it's like to explore popular opinion over the internet and stumbling across suffocating anti-think tanks. If there's a particular cartoon in which a certain extreme section of the fanbase refuses to acknowledge any flaws in, it's probably a sign of how insecure those people actually feel about how good that thing really is. They used to call these shows"guilty pleasures," because the person watching them doesn't know why they like it, but they do, and they're admitting to it. But now with the rise of certain cult cartoons, of which some are extremely massive and invasive, we've tossed that idea of guilty pleasure shows aside, and now instead of saying, "This is weird, but l like it," we say "This is weird and I love it because weird is cool and therefore I am cool!" Now it's kind of a competition in certain fanbases to block out as much critique as possible and counter it with mindless adoration.
I left a certain fandom because I was tired of the drama to the point I felt like the opinions were compromised to either be overly positive or overly negative. A certain video made me so disgusted with the fandom I left. You can't demand the best of a fandom and reject the bad of the fandom. It's a packaged deal.
Honestly, that game as far as I see, is split down the middle. Most people I've seen in that fandom hate EVERY 3d sonic game. Personally, I treat the game like the Kingdom Hearts of sonic. Garbage story but really good gameplay
I'm glad it wasn't a video just saying "you should always be aware of the imperfections of what you enjoy" or something. That can be important, but in the case of entertainment, it really only furthers one's experience to have such thoughts, which is all sorts of nice! It's when one starts interacting with others that it gets dicey, particularly if one doesn't appreciate differing views and opinions based on valid reasoning and experience. Which, no matter where you go, a lot of people don't.
Exactly! In politics and other serious matters being in an unchanging echo chamber is really bad, because it's important for ideas to be challenged, but with entertainment you never HAVE to hear other opinions if you don't want to.
Well, there were several times even when I would say something like "I think (thing X) is O.K., I like it for ___ but am not huge in particular on ___." I would try to be as polite as possible, and even supply some positives with my negatives, but those out there would only focus on how I dislike it for the reasons I've established. I'd even say that I like a show but point out some minor flaws with it and I tend to get attacked. I witness a lot of this kind of thing on Tumblr, but I've experienced it personally on just some forums out there.
I know my comment doesn't really pertain to your video, but I absolutely LOVE your channel. From your Steven Universe videos and The Bottom of the Bakery, everything on this channel is really cool. You have high quality videos and I know you put some time into them. Anyway, just wanted to say that because you're really cool.
I see this with alot of fandoms, from Adventure time, to gravity falls to Steven Universe
9 років тому+1
You know, this happens not only in fan communities, but pretty much in any context. When people lose track of the reality and think what they like is like literally the best thing ever, things can get pretty ugly.
Some of the Mysterious Mr. Enter's fan base... Oh boy... some of his fans take his atrocities/admirable animation videos as if it's the word of the animation God, I wish some people would just get out of their own little cardboard box and open up to other opinions. Some of these forums are like the North Korea of opinions.
+Cardboard Box I agree. Especially G3 MLP. I and many others have been harassed just for liking it. And thats coming from a person who only liked 'A Very Minty Christmas'.
Most recently I was in the MLP community and and the MLP fandom is very divisive. I'm sure there are other really divisive fandoms as well. I recently stopped caring about the MLP fandom after being overwhelmed by it. I got into the fandom because I really loved the show for a short time and wanted to discuss but I got tired of the fandom. Recently I've been getting more into Steven Universe but I don't care about getting into the fan community, I rather just enjoy a show on my own. I have fun talking about a show for a little while then get bored quickly.
I hate Filthy Frank due to him spawning the "Cory in the House is Best Anime" schtick. SMG4, on the other hand, I like stupid and Random Humor,so I find his videos funny.
+CaptainShcabula Oh gosh, I can only imagine how horrible SMG4’s fanbase could have gotten since I left, knowing what kind of people Five Nights and Minecraft turned up. As for Filthy Frank… I have no idea who that is, but the chances indicate I don’t even want a clue.
The second one you described is the Grumps fandom in a nutshell on Reddit and Tumblr. Because they want to be sure that the creators come back and they won't be mad, there is no stopping jokes that are now unfunny, creepy fanfictions, and it's just infuriating.
Stepping out of animation and video games for a second, one major fandom that I along with several of my friends are part of is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Now, my friends and I have all experienced some form of flack, either by liking an unpopular character, thinking certain episodes are overrated/underrated, etc. And generally, if we express that opinion, it is met with trepidation from certain fans as well as Facebook groups.
I tend to divide sites into 'fan' and 'discussion' sites myself. The latter are great for finding new ways of looking at shows (or just media in general) or getting general reviews of things. Normally I use the former for finding fanmade content and other stuff I might be interested in.
DitchDynamoProductions /// There are some REALLY bad episodes (i.e. Stuck in the Wringer, A Pal for Gary) and some good episodes (Back to the Past, Gary in Love, Abrasive Side). I think Season 7 is pretty much SCUMBOB.
It's all in the company you keep. People tend to gravitate towards those with similar interests and opinions to their own. What they need to wrap their minds around is that not every episode of the show is going to be perfection incarnate. Eventually they will find that one episode that they didn't like. "There are good episodes, and there are bad episodes, then there's 50 feet of meh, then there's that one episode: the episode that is so phenomenally terrible that you swear its only purpose in existence is to piss you off." This isn't an real quote, it's just me changing a few choice words from a quote that PMRants quoted from an actual movie to fit the situation. I believe it works quite well for describing certain shows.
I'm really a part of any fandom in general at the moment, but I have been, and one of these fandoms on Tumblr treated me horribly (I'm not gonna say which one) that I decided to leave Tumblr altogether. Because yes, I was actually blocked by a couple of popular blogs in that particular fandom. I now use an anonymous account to track tags of my favorite things on there. And no, I'm not going to be calling out any of the people who wronged me on these sites because they're honestly not worth my time. The only people who really are worth my time are the people who I know in real life, even though I'm going through a lot of family-related problems right now. And I'd rather not get into that kind of stuff 'cause you really don't wanna hear my personal business. Speaking of which, I hear drama from people on DeviantArt all the time, too. Mostly from teens still in middle or high school. And I stay out of their business and personal lives, and only give advice when I feel that it's appropriate. But yeah... I'm really not too keen on them constantly using curse words in all caps about the tiniest problems. It's kind of distracting. And yes, I used to write journals on DeviantArt like that, too, so... But I've learned not to do it because I don't want to look preachy or bad on the internet. Plus, I've matured a lot within the past three years of my life.
I don't want to single out any fanbase for doing this (because, honestly, this exists in *every* sizable fanbase, to the point that picking at individual ones would be pointless and petty on my part), but this mindset is a good part of what's killed my interest in TV Tropes so much. For a while, the site admins have been so anally against any hint of negativity about *anything* that they became the biggest assholes about it (they stopped allowing negative reviews of any media, because, what value is there in constructive criticism, am i right?), and have buttloads of rules as to what you can or cannot, or should/shouldn't post as Wall-Bangers or Dethroning Moments of suck (which are *supposed* to be purely opinion-based). So...yeah, this mentality poisons everything.
I normally tend to refrain myself from community websites like PieGuyRules mentioned, but I can still relate to this. I've been a fan of Pokemon since Elementary school, but I was never good at competitive battling in the game (which is what 84.9 percent of the community is all about). I have good friends who do competitive battling as well, which I don't mind. So, naturally, when I read a comment on UA-cam of someone who doesn't like competitive battling and refuses to accept the part of the community who do like competitive battling, I was unnerved. It's one thing to relate to a certain part of a community, but it's another thing when you dislike the other part(s) of that very community. Telling someone they're "wrong" just because they have a viewpoint different from yours can not only be discouraging for the accused person, but also for the people who share the same viewpoint as you (but aren't as close-minded as the person making the accusations).
There's this phenomenon called the "Umbridge Complex" that one Tumblr user coined which regards how those who only want positivity and no criticism can be the worst people - same for those who only want fan content to be sunshine and rainbows as well, something that fits many Tumblr users as a whole. Those fans are the absolute worst, attacking anyone whose content doesn't conform to their values or show negativity.
Hey pieguyrulz did you hear about the fairly odd parents tenth season, Timmy gets a new neighbor that he has to share his fairies with? What's your opinion on that?
Unfortunately, more than one "overly positive community" can have a dark side. Years ago I started reading a certain webcomic (you know which one... the one whose name starts with H), and after a while I searched for an online community about it to ask some questions about it (mainly because I was seriously confused by what I was reading and I was wondering if the art department was going to improve with time), a community were everybody seemed pretty enthusiastic and positive. The result was that I was told by multiple users that I was a horrible person, and one even told me (via private message) s/he was hoping for me to get cancer. I've never read another page of that webcomic ever again. Of course, I'm definitely not saying every "positive" community is like that, not at all. But some of them can be way more toxic than a more "open" community.
Good video! I have been involved in some text arguments before, it was not good. Looking go to your tomorrow video and SB Season 7 review BTW, keep it up with them! :)
The A.V. Club when it comes to Family Guy. A majority of the people there hate the show right now. Many of them act as if they never even liked it or the early seasons were just decent enough, instead of genuinely hilarious which gave the show its cult following in the first place. I remember when "The Simpsons Guy" came out, nobody liked it. All of the commenters were disgusted, bored, or unsatisfied. The site's reviewers named it the worst crossover of the year. They have legitimate opinions from time to time, and I respect that, but they turned into a hate group when they started watching the show out of spite, just to make fun of it for how much it has declined. The weird thing is, they tend to be a lot more forgiving towards The Simpsons or South Park, even though their declines have been pretty steep as well. Even the writers on that site want nothing to do with it anymore. Once Animation Domination ended, coverage of FG was dropped completely and now nobody talks about it at all. It's very deflating.
I tend to join a lot of positive communities. I'm aware from school and just daily life that a lot of what I love isn't widely known or at least widely appreciated. So it's nice to be around people who get excited for the same things I do. If you hate something I love, I don't really care. I'm not going to bash your opinion and admittedly, nothing is without its flaws. But I've told this to one of my best friends in real life before (who will offer his opinion on shows whether I ask for it or not) that if it's something I really enjoy and he doesn't it's just kind of a downer to suddenly hear him start picking out all the show's faults. Even if the show isn't close to flawless, let me enjoy it for what it is.
I just prefer discussing on UA-cam than with Forums or fansites it's harder to get a response back at least on UA-cam I get answers and can reply quicker to things and ideas
I won't worry about it the SU fandom is just in it's "overly positive it can do no wrong phase", I saw this happen in the Brony fandom as well, it's just a part of a fandom growing up. But be careful though, next comes the "Hey, this part is actually bad" phase, swiftly followed by "What? How dare you point out one negative thing in this perfect show, begone hater", then "no guys, this show is exceptional but it's not perfect, nothing is", and after a massive outflux of those people who's just in the fandom because it's the "in thing on the internet right now", we will finally be left with the solid mature fanbase which can now stand through anything at all, be it bad episodes, time, trolls, or even series finale. Or the fandom can just refuse to grow up and become another whiner man-childs of the internet, but lets hope that doesn't happen...
There are Steven Universe fans that are horrible for this. They utterly and recklessly MOBBED StupidPrivate913 because he made a '10 worst episodes' video just because he had criticism of a few episodes, completely ignoring the videos he made about good episodes and gives the show a strong recommendation.
I see this in the Smash Bros Community and The Internet Wrestling Community all the time. The Smash Bros Fandom consists of 50% Stupid Character Requesters, 30% of people who take their Smash Shipping too far(Guilty as Charged), and 20% Calm, Neutral Fans. The IWC consists of 50% Dream Match Bookers(AKA: making Matches that will never happen), 40% of People That bash anything Before or After The Attitude Era(not to mention 75% John Cena Haters), and 10% Calm Respectful Fans.
This is essentially why I left the "Legend of Korra" fandom. I don't like Korrasami. I guess I'm not a true fan, according to people, because it's canon and I shouldn't be a hater and have such a closed mind over alternatives to the traditional couple archetype and whatnot (And I'm writing this in the kindest words I remember being said). And it's not because I'm closed minded or anything of the like. I just don't like the ship. So sue me.
LGBT relationships in cartoons are VERY rare, some people are so happy to have a cannon one that they base every conversation about the show on that one thing, and assume if you aren't a fan of that creative choice you're a homophobe and obviously hate gays. I think it's fantastic that group is getting more representation, but just like every other relationship on shows, some people are going to like it and others won't for legit reasons ranging from it feeling forced to a lack of chemistry. So yeah, I feel your pain on this, and it really sucks how tunnelvisioned people can get.
Any fanfiction in Quotev is like this. I remember I critiqued this one girl's fanfic and she went berserk and told me I was a hater and I insulted her work. It was quite an... Experience XD
Ah yes, this is something I experience quite a bit with the Marvel community. Whenever I say to a fan of Marvel films that I didn't particularly care for Marvel's Avengers Assemble, Guardians of the Galaxy or Captain America: The First Avenger, while also giving positives of each film (such as the effects, the acting and some interesting story turns), they just call me a hater and that I just don't get Marvel. But when I turn around and say that I'm a fan of such films as Iron Man 3, Thor the Dark World or Avengers Age of Ultron, they go off and say that they were insults to the comics and apparently I shouldn't enjoy them. Now this isn't true of all Marvel fans, I have had a few intellectual discussions about the studio as a whole from people who aren't totally obsessed with it and are willing to admit the flaws, as I admit the positives, and we do agree on such films as Iron Man 1, Ant Man and Captain America 2, but these people are in the minority, from what I've seen.
I see what you mean, I once said I disliked the steven universe episode "reformed" and people just kept saying I was wrong and that the episode was good
Actually I find the main problem with things that are popular is that even when things are getting attacked it's either blatant "This sucks" comments so it goes nowhere or it's hate on something that is generally talked to death about and just regarded as a "Whatever" problem and categorized as a "Hey it's not perfect" that it really doesn't warrant it by the majority (Granted the second type is a double standard, but I see it a lot anyway)
I think the opposite of this happens to spongebob now, where people are closed off to new episodes, no matter how good they are. Also, any updates on season 7?
Happens to me with SU and Tumblr all the time. I still love tumblr tho, I just feel its important to acknowledge that it can be a really judgemental place.
A.K.A the fanboy sites, otherwise known as the lowlife scum of any fandom. At the very least these sites keep most of them occupied and away from annoying the hell out of the rational fans and critiques.
Well, on one of our videos about Teen Titans Go of us reviewing it, some troll thought we reviewed it talking about it the way we did because we think it's funny and was saying all this negative crap about me and my friends. Meanwhile everyone else who comments on it or the other parts of that review all pretty much say their own takes and inputs about why they hate that show. And that troll is the same troll who commented on an older video around Christmas in 2014 telling me I'm a fat fuck and that I should kill myself. So right away I realized and knew he was a troll.
I was on Pokemon Showdown in the Anime and Manga chatroom, I was talking about how one of my favorite characters actually goes through character growth, despite popular belief. All they would say was how I was stupid for a) liking that anime b) trying to have a serious discussion or c) I was just a whiny bitch. Even though I talked professionally and had evidence backing up my claims, the room owner came on, called everyone else a pussy and told me if I don't like being around shit posters then I could go the fuck away. It was like a kid version of 4chan.
I can Understand this situation. When overly positive fans (or fanboys) always talk about shows that he/she likes and SCREAMS at people for "daring criticizing there favorite show because they think is perfect" when they should realize sometimes that the thing that he/she likes have flaws. (looking at you Narutards and SonicTards) -_-
Courtney D He probably hasn't, but considering that the titular characters look rather off from what they're supposed to be portrayed as (you know, chipmunks that are rather different), I could understand why that might be the case.
Crazy Luigi I figured as much, but I felt like asking because it's worth the shot. I watched one episode that had not only Alvin saying "swagger" but also had Theodore in a fedora saying "M'Lady" so...not really something I liked.
Hey guys, sorry for the short video today. Work has really kicked my butt this week so it was either this or nothing. Originally I planned on this being a bonus video, but I just haven't had much time this week. Don't forget that there is a new Square Theory tomorrow! Oh and SB season 7 is getting there, expect an update video with a release date in a week or two.
Bumbleking vs. SEGA Forums. Bumbleking forces you to say positive things and everyone there is a suck-up. SEGA Forums on the other hand, you can say anything about anything.
It's really bad to shout down people who make complaints about the negative aspects of a beloved show because if the show takes a wrong turn quality, the criticism can help make the show better again. Family Guy and Teen Titans Go both ignore the criticism lobbed at them, and they continue to get worse and worse. Spongebob is a show that I love, and I openly admit that it suffered from seasonal rot. However, I feel that the criticism reached the people in charge of the show and that contributed to its' improvement.
***** It's pretty good, the writing shifts back and forth between the good and bad things about having "lol so random" shows (in a vein to Invader Zim) which makes some episodes really good and others really obnoxious. I would recommended checking it out though since it's first few episodes are pretty good. Just uh... avoid the theme song though.
A good example with this is the gamer community. This gaming platform is the best thing ever, brag about it everywhere else and every other platform is garbage and useless. And that nothing can be wrong with their favorite game developer X cause they made a good game you loved one time or series of games.
(I'm gonna regret this so much but...) The overly positive fandom problem is extremely prevalent in MLP:FiM fandom, Now I do really like this show I think it's funny, charming and honestly just likable but the fandom can........frustrating to say the least. Though the frustrating part of the fandom (from my experience) comes from the fanworks and if you anything remotely bad about the popular ones like Fall of the crystal empire, for example you *will* get mauled no matter how valid said criticism is, like how the voice actors sound super bored and the sound mixing being hit or miss. This also happens in the show itself with very beloved episodes like a canterlot wedding or slice of life. Bottom line being that, if you like really like something that's great, just don't act like some kind of rabid dog when even a little but of negative criticism comes your way.
I'm looking at you, sonic fanbase

There's a site where Sonic fans are positive? It's hard enough finding fans like that in general!
We're all looking at the fan base.
+Shoco462 MLP fan sites are NOT overly positive.
King DJ "If you play Sonic in English, you're a disgrace!"
- The Overly Negative Sonic Fanbase.
JasminePaygeBrooke Case in point, the Nintendo Fanboys. They defend and say that every creation from Nintendo is good.

Heheh I know that all too well.
The Side Quest Gamer Yep. Every fanbase has a darkside.
You talking about mr Enter?
***** Nah, he's just angry at everything and everyone all the time.
***** I should have elaborated more. I meant to say he made a video on his own channel discussing this reviewer.
Thanks for this video dude. People need to realize that there is such a thing as being TOO positive.
Stephon Zeno Or that it's ok to dislike something that a show does but still be a fan >.>
Yup. People like to live by this rule of "You're allowed to have an opinion, it just can't be negative." They won't outright say it, but that's definitely what they mean.
VaxXi That makes no sense. At all. You can dislike something but still be an overall fan. It's not so black and white.
Asterite100
So everything you like is perfect in every way?
Stephon Zeno
What, I'm on your side. Read my comment again.
VaxXi seems to be of that mindset.
FrozenUSA
Don't forget the crazy shippers! I'm a huge Steven Universe fan and I follow SU accounts on Instagram. One day one of the accounts posted pictures of pearl and amethyst ship pictures, and I casually commented (saying as carefully as possible) on how I didn't really like the ship because there was no evidence to back it up on the show.I got BOMBED. So many people were mad. I mean I ship in the show too, but some people take their ship way too personality!
+EYBOI if you critisize someone's head canon they'll kill you. lol back in the day i got into an arguement with someone who shipped pearl ans steven
Sisby ewwwwwwwwww thats like twilight
Jimmy Bob Yeah, you know something is wrong when you can compare your ship to Twilight.
Both positive comments and negative comments have pros and cons. Positive comments can make you happy and feel that your work payed off. But too much positive, then you may get an ego or not improve.
Negative comments can help you improve, but they can sometimes be hurtful, and some don't want you to improve and just want you to stop (troll comments.)
So really you do have to have both, but seed through negative comments to know which ones will actually help you.
***** It's considered to be great, but it's very slow. You'll just have to find out!
***** It brilliant from a directing and cinematography point of view, I just can't get through it without fast fowarding at least a few times.
Level 1-Awesome
Level 2-Pretty Good (Ex: a few rock band fanbases maybe Kiss I think)
Level 3-Healthy...for the Most Part (Ex:MARVEL Fanbase)
Level 4-Alright (Ex:Spongebob Fanbase)
Level 5-Unpredictable/Middle Ground (Ex:My Little Pony fanbase/Bronies)
Level 6-Bad (Ex:Mr. Enter's Fanbase aka EnterBots and Animation Snobs/Fanboys)
Level 7-Bad to the Bone (Ex: Star Wars Fan Base and Super Smash Bros Fanbase)
Level 8-Worst of the Worst (Ex:Star Trek, DC Comics, and Sonic Fanbase)
Level 9-NOT HUMAN!!
Jonny Boy What's wrong with Mr. Enter's fanbase?
+lukerbom12 the most common criticism I see is that he is too nit picky, and always overreacts to minor things. And that somehow the fans are stupid for enjoying his vids. Tbh I could care less, I think he's ENTERtaining (laugh track)
***** They agree with Mr. Enter on everything and fail to have their own opinions. And they take everything Mr. Enter say way too literal.
vroomvroom Don't forget the drum roll!
*cough cough* MLP fanbase *cough cough*.
Oldschoolnintendogamer I've seen plenty of balance between negative and positive opinions, although I will say there are times when they can be overly positive and negative.
I would have to disagree. This problem could be associated with any fan base of any program.
Have you seen how a good majority of James fans have been since the whole leekfish thing.
I see it happen more with Homestuck fans and Steven Universe fans. And anime fans.
***** Except when it came to EQG. :)
Yo. Pie guy, those bottom of the bakery vids you do are the best. keep up the good work and thank you for posting videos in general.
Ah, fandom mob mentality. It exists.
...In just about every fandom, actually. To some extent, at least. It's easy to attack someone for disagreeing with you when you've got a lot of other people sharing your opinion backing you up.
+TimeyWimeyAura Agreed. Even in the communities I'm in I face these nutwits.
Also I remember expressing my dislike the Gravity Falls episode Dungeon Dungeon and more dungeons on the subreddit and I got downvoted to oblivion.
Katz What don't you like about it? was it Stanford? was it just the concept? now I'm curious...
+RidleyKraid187 Nah I just felt like the dialogue was awkward. I also wasn't a fan of all the drawn out metajokes.

Angel Gonterman What do ships mean?
Kenneth Dinkleburg Ship is a pairing of two characters, usually romantically. It's a shortening of "Relationship". When someone says they ship two (or more) characters, that means that they see them as a potential couple.
Angel Gonterman Thanks for the explanation.
On another note, here's another example of the fandom turned psycho: a while back, a storyboard artist for TTG! had drawn a fanmade "promotional image" for a "Titans Bomb", made in parody of the Steven Bombs:
snaggle-teeth.tumblr.com/image/122782485177
The response was OVERWHELMINGLY negative, and the majority were from SU fans, chastising the man for even DARING to associate that TTG! rabble with "Their Beloved, Holy Show"! , and I felt extremely sorry for him. guilt by association to the highest degree. this is what Fandoms do- they hold their subjects on a pedestal, and talk down anyone who dare talk bad about it.
RidleyKraid187 4 letters. FNAF, Also I don't really like lapis, she is just kinda weird to me.
RidleyKraid187 I think you're exaggerating this a little bit.
I don't really see many flaws with Steven Universe, but if someone brings up a flaw I can see why and I see how they feel.
+gamingking82 I can't see why some people hate Steven because they think he's cliched when he is actually a realistic child character.
SlipperySnaggleFoot I think it was the first few episodes in season 1 that put them off. I still don't understand why people act like he's a stupid child or not an accurate child because you must not be around many children if you think that way.
+Sisby the first trailers made Steven universe look like a joke it took a while for me to get into it, most people don't want to give it a chance.
Isaac Davidson CN makes everything look like a joke. CN sucks at promotions.
+Sisby true
Thoughts On We Bare Bears?
I haven't really seen enough of it yet to say.
I find great fun although more stuff about them being bears would be nice.
I find great fun although more stuff about them being bears would be nice.
Can people please stop calling out fanbases? Some of you guys completely misinterpreted PieGuy's message.
But now with the rise of certain cult cartoons, of which some are extremely massive and invasive, we've tossed that idea of guilty pleasure shows aside, and now instead of saying, "This is weird, but l like it," we say "This is weird and I love it because weird is cool and therefore I am cool!"
Now it's kind of a competition in certain fanbases to block out as much critique as possible and counter it with mindless adoration.
I left a certain fandom because I was tired of the drama to the point I felt like the opinions were compromised to either be overly positive or overly negative. A certain video made me so disgusted with the fandom I left. You can't demand the best of a fandom and reject the bad of the fandom. It's a packaged deal.
I like how you wore your Greendale Community College while talking the community of fandoms.
I don't think I've ever been on one of those sites before, but still a pretty good video. Also, nice Greendale shirt. Go Human Beings!
I don't know what's worst, an overly positive fanbase (like Steven Universe or Sonic) or an overly negative fanbase (like Star Wars or Godzilla).
Sonic fanbase is not positive by any means, unless you count their worship of SA2.
Honestly, that game as far as I see, is split down the middle. Most people I've seen in that fandom hate EVERY 3d sonic game. Personally, I treat the game like the Kingdom Hearts of sonic. Garbage story but really good gameplay
While I do feel like Sonic gets far too much flack, there are a number of titles I won't defend.
+earthbound9999 whats wrong with sonic its an alright game whats bad about it
I'm glad it wasn't a video just saying "you should always be aware of the imperfections of what you enjoy" or something.
Exactly! In politics and other serious matters being in an unchanging echo chamber is really bad, because it's important for ideas to be challenged, but with entertainment you never HAVE to hear other opinions if you don't want to.
pieguyrulz what dont u like about Magic Man's direction? i think it's interesting and deepins his character
pieguyrulz what dont u like about Magic Man's direction? i think it's interesting and deepins his character
pieguyrulz what dont u like about Magic Man's direction? i think it's interesting and deepins his character
*cough cough* FNAF fanbase...
Also Star Wars fanbase.
And also Transformers (Mainly Michael Bay) fanbase.
I've never sseen a transformer fanbase
Charmander Universe They mostly complain about the Transformer movies. And there's a highly chance you would be called a 12 year old for liking them.
Yeah... I hate those movies.
The internet is a cruel, cruel place.
I see this with alot of fandoms, from Adventure time, to gravity falls to Steven Universe
1:48
If only there were hate blogs for Teletubbies & Animation Dominantion.
Nintedno fanboys should watch this video.
i don't think I've ever seen an opinion based argument end unanimously
"Heeello,I'm Pieguyrulz. I remember it so you don't have to!"
(I cannot be the only one who thought this.)
FILTHY FRANK FANBASE
*SUPERMARIOGLITCHY4 FANBASE*
Being too negative can give you depression, but being too positive can give you diabetes.
I tend to divide sites into 'fan' and 'discussion' sites myself. The latter are great for finding new ways of looking at shows (or just media in general) or getting general reviews of things. Normally I use the former for finding fanmade content and other stuff I might be interested in.
Never knew this existed😄😄
This video was so cool! I can't wait for the Spongebob videos🐌🐙🐟🐋
ME TOO! SB SEASON 7!!!!!
Season 7 on the way
DitchDynamoProductions /// In a week or two, PIEGUYRULZ said.
BryceFourn 2001 I saw. As of right now I counted 13 episodes I can call good. And 33 bad ones. I wonder what he is going say.
Great points Pieguy!
Heh sounds about right
Pokemon Pegasister i don't like that idea lol. shame. i grew u with this show too.
But some of them can be way more toxic than a more "open" community.
this is a public service announcement this is only a test
Good video! I have been involved in some text arguments before, it was not good. Looking go to your tomorrow video and SB Season 7 review BTW, keep it up with them! :)
Overly-zealous fanboys/fangirls tend to shed a negative light on fanbases in general.
Fans of AoT should learn from this.
Never be a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Ever!
Be a fan of Sofia the first!
oh, good, here we go, time for the comments to blame fanbases of this despite the fact that is a well known fact that any fanbase can get the same way
It's a good thing I'm not a over-positive raging fanboy. I just sit in front of my TV and watch my favorite cartoons like a normal person.
This is the Steven universe subreddit. I have never seen a negative opinion on that subreddit. There's no way nobody dislikes the show.
That's the problem I always feel like I get into, it doesn't help that I was raised like that.
Any fanfiction in Quotev is like this. I remember I critiqued this one girl's fanfic and she went berserk and told me I was a hater and I insulted her work. It was quite an... Experience XD
They're called "hugboxes" my dear, "hugboxes." And they are terrible.
*cough*deviantart*cough*
I think the opposite of this happens to spongebob now, where people are closed off to new episodes, no matter how good they are. Also, any updates on season 7?
Love your shirt, just started to watch that show! Abed is my favorite character. :3
I feel like this happened with the Percy Jackson fandom. If I say I don't ship solangelo, then I'm pretty much screwed.
Happens to me with SU and Tumblr all the time. I still love tumblr tho, I just feel its important to acknowledge that it can be a really judgemental place.
+pieguyrulz are u gonna review spongebob season 7?
He's gonna release an update video on it soon with a release date.
+BryceFourn 2001 oh OK thanks
You're quite intelligent.
nice Greendale shirt.
I love X show. My favorite character on X show is Mr. X, he's so X.
Why not Mrs. X?
Wakka Seta There is no Mrs. X, Mr. X is a single father.
Stares at fnaf community because you know its true.
thoughts on harvey beaks?
The IWC, I'M LOOKING AT YOU!!!
I can Understand this situation. When overly positive fans (or fanboys) always talk about shows that he/she likes and SCREAMS at people for "daring criticizing there favorite show because they think is perfect" when they should realize sometimes that the thing that he/she likes have flaws. (looking at you Narutards and SonicTards) -_-
Also, have you happened to see the new Alvin and the Chipmunk show on Nickelodeon?
Courtney D He probably hasn't, but considering that the titular characters look rather off from what they're supposed to be portrayed as (you know, chipmunks that are rather different), I could understand why that might be the case.
Crazy Luigi I figured as much, but I felt like asking because it's worth the shot. I watched one episode that had not only Alvin saying "swagger" but also had Theodore in a fedora saying "M'Lady" so...not really something I liked.
Courtney D Wait, that really happened? Are you sure you're not fucking around with me!?
Crazy Luigi I swear on my grandmother's grave! The episode is Episode 5, the second one called "Don Juan Theodoro"
+Courtney D You kind of left out the context on why exactly Theodore was wearing the fedora in the first place.
*cough,cough*Tumblr*cough,cough*StevenUniverseFandom*cough,cough*
Never been to a fansite I think. I just kinda give my thoughts on social media or share it with my friends and see if they like whatever show.
Hey what are your thoughts on star vs the forces of evil?
I haven't seen it yet.
+PIEGUYRULZ Well whenever you get the chance check it out it's a really fun show
A good example with this is the gamer community. This gaming platform is the best thing ever, brag about it everywhere else and every other platform is garbage and useless. And that nothing can be wrong with their favorite game developer X cause they made a good game you loved one time or series of games.
(I'm gonna regret this so much but...)
The overly positive fandom problem is extremely prevalent in MLP:FiM fandom, Now I do really like this show I think it's funny, charming and honestly just likable but the fandom can........frustrating to say the least.
