Eric Swanson was the Number ONE Pitcher in all of basball against left-handed pitching that year and Servais never ONCE called on Swanson in those playoffs. He should have been shown the door after that game. Killed Ray's psyche and saved Houston all in one-fell poop, er swoop. Would not bother me a bit if Servais was shown the door. Can't see it, as he's Dipto's longtime good buddy. Maybe Dipoto should go too? 🤔

I remember about a while ago the mariners were going into the bottom of the 10th down 1 run with Mitch Haniger coming up to bat and I was CERTAIN he was going to pitch hit Dom Canzone in for him. It only made sense, put in the left pull hitter to try and get a ground ball or fly ball to the right side of the field to advance the runner. Instead he leaves Haniger out there and he strikes out, next batter hits a ground ball that gets the runner over to 3rd and with 2 out decides to THEN put Canzone in to pitch hit, pulling Ryan Bliss to do so who was 3 for 3 on the day up to that point. Even when he has some of the easiest decisions possible he still manages to fuck it up colossally

The most remarkable thing to me about Scott, is that he was an MLB catcher. Being a catcher requires extremely high baseball IQ and a keen feel for the game, arguably more than any other position. You just can't have someone like this calling the shots in 5 or 7 game winner takes all type series.

Third, that ball hung up for a while, then they took a second to pick it up, and by the time it reached the middle infielders, ten seconds had passed. Considering he runs an average of 27.8 ft/sec. at full speed he's probably closer to 29 ft/sec. His 5 ft splits (per statcast) says it takes him on average 3.99 sec to reach 1B, if he's sprinting, even with getting up to speed, it's probably 3.5 seconds, figuring another 3.25 sec. at full speed from 1B-to-2B, and against 3.25 sec. from 2B-to-3B, it should've taken him about 11-12 sec. at most, which by transfer and throw to 3B would've beat the throw by 10-20 feet.

@@gamefacesports6704 Garver had a 134 wRC+ against lefties coming into that AB. Compared to Raley's 43! It was 100% the right move. Luke cannot hit lefties. Garver still can even though his year has been terrible. Garver shouldn't see another right hander as long as we can avoid it but is still hitting lefties. Has nothing to do with a feel for the game, you absolutely make that decision every time. I wish we had better options off the bench, but Garver was the only logical choice there. I don't like a lot of Servais' in game decisions, but the fact that this is the hill fans on dying on baffles me. The decision to have Diaz pitch to Dever's in the walkoff game against the Red Sox was an unquestionably worse call as you had a base open and his run didn't matter. Any manager in MLB would have walked Devers there.

You nailed this video and explained in detail why this man deserved to be let go last off-season. Jerry failed and kept him. The craziest part about Scott is the fact that this guy is a former professional player but yet manages like he is completely unfamiliar with the game. I'm not saying a new manager is going to change this team by leaps and bounds, but when something isn't working, you typically look for a solution unless your name is Jerry Dipoto. Complete disaster at all levels of this team and it's hard to watch.

But when he came to the Mariners in 2015, they were 12th in paytoll and continued to be there and even were 8th in 2018. No playoff appearances caused the owners to pull the reins in and since 2019, they have been in the upper teens to mid 20s in payroll. This year they are 17th. During Lou Pinella's ten years they averaged just under 13th in payroll. 1995 they were 11th, 1997-15th, 2000-15th, 2001-11th. Yet they made the right acquisitions to make the playoffs 4 times in those ten years. They have never been big spenders and have consistently been in the upper to lower middle each year since they came into existence. Other mid-payroll teams have made the playoffs more than once during the last 9 years. Dipoto should be the head of the farm development where he is very good.

For a team that is so in on analytics on the pitching side which has been pretty successful for them it very much seems their batters are not taking to it as well. Could this be the big bad ugly issue with the Mariners offense as a whole? Maybe go back to just basic fundamental hitting approach? See ball, hit ball and choke up with a 2 strike count while shrinking your strike zone to only go after pitches you can hit. Forget the background analytic garbage. Maybe their hitters will feel less stressed out at the plate. Unfortunately I don't see Jerry accepting that suggestion.

Even after the strikeout, Garver has a .791 OPS vs. LHP (120 OPS+), while Raley has a .497 OPS vs. LHP (39 OPS+). Taking a bad outcome and using confirmation bias to say it was bad thought process is ridiculous. Even the best hitter in the league fails in that situation 2 out of 3 times, and we don't have the best hitter to run out there, so based on Raley's .177 avg vs. LHP, he would've failed 5 out of 6 times. So Servais is bad because he took the best chance to continue the game? Any manager would've made that call. If everything was just based on numbers and statistics, then anyone with a calculator could be a MLB manager. I agree that most managers would've done the same thing in today game, which is precisely the problem. Many managers in today's game share Scott's pitfalls with analytics, managers used to move all their pieces to give them the best chance to win, using analytics as a guideline but they didn't base every decision on spreadsheets.

was a game earlier this year. I can't remember exactly the game. That Servais let Dylan Moore (who had homered earlier) bat later in the game in a clutch situation that
called for pinch hitter. Moore made an out, and everyone jumped on Servais for going with the hot hand and not the proven track record. Give me time and I'll look it up.
Fact is the lower half of this batting order is pathetic.
Third base power hitting position has Rojas with 6 home runs. Before that Urias who was a total dud

Both statistics and the human elements of the game need to be accounted for is what I’m saying. Never said there’s no place for statistics. Well aware of the handedness advantages too you don’t have to be in the MLB to know that. Im just saying you can’t totally disregard the human element and make decisions SOLEY based on statistics. Which Scott seems to do.

@gamefacesports6704 lefty/righty match up aren't solely based on statistics. They're based on pitch physics and, more importantly, the ability to see and read the release point better, which is absolutely critical. You literally need to turn your head more to hard focus both eyes on the release point in same side matchups.
