The Ultimates and Avengers were at war with eachother, Peter died because during that fight, he took a bullet for Cap from Punisher, and then had to fight the Ultimate Six without treating it, while the two other teams were still slugging it out elsewhere.

Most people in the ultimate universe are jerks anyway, even Peter. If this happened in the 616 universe it wouldnt be seen as a horrible thing.
