Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is a 2006 American fantasy swashbuckler film. It is the second installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series and the sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). It was directed by Gore Verbinski, written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. In the film, the wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) is interrupted by Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander), who wants Turner to acquire the compass of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in a bid to find the Dead Man's Chest. Meanwhile, Sparrow discovers his debt to Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) is due.

The CGI and ILM on Davy Jones looks creepy and insane, and a lot of people like the awesome design of Davy Jones in the two Pirates of the Caribbean films.

In the defense of Bootstrap Bill's appearance, he's literally been fishified for like thirty years on top of general aging. He's lucky to still have a human face at this point, let alone look anything like his younger self or his son.

true. when they said Will looks like him they could be refering to the hair, which you know, Bill's hair has been wet this whole time.
This in the take. People(Doug included now) argue on Bloom being a "spitting image" of Skarsgaard, but the fact that between Jack seeing Bootstrap(his reference) to bootstrap getting his share of gold, being tide to a cannon(by his bootstraps), and being folded in to the Dutchman's crew, Bloom looks a more passable son to Stellan Sarsgaard than Bill Sarsgaard(his actual son) does.
I think only 10 or 11 years passed, but I agree with your point. Bootstrap has aged in a very fishy environment.
Would the curse even allow him to age or be effected by being underwater for 10 years? Also that’s gotta suck for poor Bootstrap, he’s stuck down there for 10 years then suddenly without warning he becomes mortal again and starts drowning
God the cgi for Davey Jones still looks amazing nearly 17 years later.
You can feel the effort they put into him to make him look creepy. Plus the build-up to his appearance is well done

The audience in my theater cheered when Barbosa stepped on the screen. "What's become of my ship" was one of the most hyped cliff hangers put to screen.

The compass thing wasnt retconned. In the first movie, Gibbs said “Aye the compass doesnt point north! But we’re not trying to find north are we?” Heavily implying the whole “compass pointing to where you want most.”
That line just reinforces "the compass doesn't point north". Not anything else.
oh so true!! I thought i wasn't going to find a comment saying this, all we knew in the first movie was it was a compass that doesn't point north, no one other then the one guy in beginning said it was broken and given no one said otherwise Critic just assumed that was the case, but it is the biggest McGuffin in the whole series.
@@BridaUlv It's pretty much implied how it works from the first movie. They state that Isla de Muerta cannot be found except by those who already know where it is, but Jack could find it with the use of his compass. Barbossa found it by complete coincidence by being lost, because "you have to be lost to find a place that cannot be found". It's a bit unfortunate that Doug has several criticisms of these movies so far based on simply missing context because its pretty subtle, when I think he should instead be praising it.

@@BridaUlv I think the original implication was simply that the compass points to Isla De Muerta. The heart's desire actually makes more sense, so if it's a retcon, it's a pretty good retcon.
Fun fact: They didn’t tell any of the actors that Barbossa was returning. Their reactions to seeing him again are genuine.

@@ninjabluefyre3815 Correct! Which is believable, considering she just kinda disappeared, but I honestly think bringing back Barbossa was the right call.
There are 3 improvised moments in the movie that stands out, first one you mentioned - that none of the crew knew that Geoffrey Rush was returning to the series, and was making a surprise cameo at the end. Second one was the kiss between Elizabeth and Jack before she chains him up was not put in the scripts, the actors were told the scene on the spot, but no one told Orlando Bloom, so his reaction to seeing the kissing scene is also genuine. Third one, and perhaps the best with the Barbossa cameo at the end, is the Jar of Dirt song and fall before it. Jack was supposed to taunt Jones in a creative fashion, but Depp did actually accidently fall down the stairs which is why when he continues the scene and the improvised scene with song, the "dafuq?" look each of the cast gives each other as he passes is also genuine.
That's awesome! I was surprised too when he showed up!
Fun fact. Davy Jones is played by the same actor who voices Saint Germain in the Castlevania Animated Series. Bill Nighy is an absolute legend.

It was so weird knowing it was a guy actually under all the CG as a kid. You should watch his GQ interviews to hear his thoughts about being stuck in the mo-cap suit for the entire shoot

talking about the pirate music is like talking about the star wars music, is too iconic and praised to death that barelly goes without saying that without that music the pirates films wouldn be as remebered.

The whole " I got a jar of dirt" moment was completely ad-libbed, including his tumble on the stairs. So the reactions from everyone are 100% genuine. 😁
And also makes perfect sense because Jack does'nt know the heart was'nt in there.
That scene always makes me giggle. I love the reactions from Keira and Orlando looking at each other like “what is Johnny on?”
The special effects for Davy Jones still hold up really well
They look better than most of the effects in Ant Man Quantumania.

They earned that Oscar for this. Compare Davy Jones to what they did with Salazar and the zombie shark; Javier’s CG isn’t bad but it’s bland compared to all the work on Davy Jones. I found Davy Jones creepy as a 13 year old watching this; it’s still creepy now though
Earned the film a much deserved Oscar.
I think Barbossa biting into the apple with obvious relish at the end adds to the significance of his return, considering the reason he wanted to get rid of his curse to begin with.
The compass is not as of a retcon as it seems. In the first movie Jack is seen navigating with it Will asks why he is using a broken compass, Gibs says that the compass doesn’t point north but that they aren’t trying to find north.
Yeah and it still works as a weird character trait that Jack carries it around, we just don’t know until this movie what the deal with it is.
I think the newest film does retcon it because Tia Dalma gave him the compass, but in the new movie I think Young Jack gets it as a tribute when all the pirates are giving him items after he kills Salazar
Also at one point in the first film Will still asks Gibbs how Jack came into possession of that compass, since he understood that it is not a normal object. So yeah, the "what you want most in the world" story isn't really a retcon. The story of how he got it, yes it is. Who gave it to him in the end? Tia Dalma or his old captain?

Yeah, I was really annoyed when Doug complained about this. Like he didn't watch the first movie, or is just looking for reasons to dislike this one.
Take that back Doug. That Kraken scene was amazing. The effects, the music, the shots, it’s all amazing. Sure, it’s not all that important to the plot, but it is entertaining.
Eh the effect's for the Kraken's not really that great. Not terrible but hasn't aged well like Jones has.
The Kraken scene is to me the most memorable part of the movie, so to criticize that scene makes no sense to me.
Actually it does have a point to the plot. It gives one of our characters experience against the Kraken so that they have a chance against it in the climax. Will formulated his entire plan because he knew how it attacked

I also think Doug is really reaching on overly hating these films. They aren’t really that bad. Then again, he undoubtedly watches movies in a different way than I do. I’m not overly critical if there is something in the film that doesn’t make a lot of sense or “isn’t important to the plot”. As long as it isn’t major. The most important thing for me is if it is entertaining to watch. It doesn’t have to have the most amazing, tightly written script. Doug seems to kinda base his reviews on a lot of personal biases.
Personally, I love Norrington in this movie. I liked that he was shown to genuinely care about Elizabeth in the first movie, as opposed to being the typical villainous rival. Here, we get to see him with the layers of formality stripped away, and he's one of the most interesting characters. It also doesn't hurt that Jack Davenport is a whole snack.
Right?? He's such an underrated character, and I'm glad he got explored further than "the ex-boyfriend."
Oh definitely! He's much more interesting as the movies go on and I always approve of movies furthering a character's character.
He was even more interesting than Will.
I agree, Norrington really stuck his neck out and redeemed himself. He was always a good man at heart, I think, he just had to take off the uniform.

God, I almost forgot about Jones's crew. Not only do the effects really hold up, but their designs are all killer. That hammerhead guy might be my favorite next to Jones himself.

The first movie actually did hint that the compass was magical. Remember, Gbbs said, "The compass doesn't point north. But we're not trying to find North, are we?"
There Is a whole scene of jack in a fricking storm using the Compass like It Is working.

The thing about the compass isn't exactly a retcon, at least, not a negative one. In the first movie, when Will, Jack, and the crew were sailing through that storm, and Will was complaining that they were trying to locate an island that nobody can find with a compass that "doesn't work", Gibbs actually DID imply that there was something else about it when he said "Ay, the compass doesn't point north...but we aren't trying to FIND north, are we?"
Also, at the end, Will isn't going to save Jack because he wants to save Jack. He wants his ship, which is faster than the Flying Dutchman, and thus is capable of subverting it's advantages against other ships. S, Will is doing this for his father, not Jack.
I believe it also points towards Elizabeth when Norrington is holding it.
The three-way sword fight between Jack, Will and Norrington for the chest is one of my absolute favorite scenes in the whole Pirates series. Not only is the fight choreography incredibly impressive among the three of them, along creatively changing the location from the beach, to a church, to on top and inside a runaway watermill, but I love each character has their own good reason why they want the chest. Jack wants to settle his debt with Davy Jones and call off the Kraken, Will wants to free his father from the Flying Dutchman, and Norrington wants to regain his place as a Navy officer. This is where all the overlapping subplots come together and work perfectly in the movie; I support each of the character's respective goals while watching some ridiculously fun action.
You hit every point perfectly. I don’t know what Doug was smoking on this episode. What’s weird is he seems content to let Marvel slide with their garbage.

In regards to the compass scene with Elizabeth, I don’t think it’s Jack she’s in love with. I think it’s his lifestyle and what he represents.
Jack is a pirate with a carefree, adventurous life. Elizabeth as the daughter of a governor has never known such freedom and excitement. So a part of her longs for that freedom and adventure.
She still loves will but a part of her heart loves freedom also
Exactly and you can always count on Jack to provide freedom and adventure!
Which later she just becames a wife and a mother to a child of a guy that will be most of his life in the sea while she's at home.

Davy Jones has some of the best animations in any CG character I’ve seen
The way every individual tentacle in his “beard” moves independently from one another, the bit where he blows out his pipe with one of his gills, everything about him just looks so detailed and so *unbearably* difficult to animate

Barbossa's return took everyone by surprise, even the rest of the cast. It was kept a secret from even them, so their reactions as he approached were genuine.

This is honestly my favorite Pirates movie, I love Davy Jones so much as a villain and I definitely find it as an escalation in all the right areas. The kraken especially was such a highlight
He's better than javier bardem as random ghost pirate captain in the fifth one. At least Jones has a personality.

The point of the first kraken attack was so Will could see how it attacked, and thus know how to drive it off.
I think the point of the island was that it would be more fun and memorable than simply having Will find Jack.
I actually really like the "trilogy."
Yeah, the second and third movies take a pretty big departure from the first movie, but they all have a few things in common. They all feel like the cast and crew are both having fun while also caring about the material. I've heard that Geoffrey Rush (Captain Barbossa) would talk extensively with the writers and director about his character and the story and they all had a blast coming up with interesting ideas, and it shows on screen. And there are some really neat subtle stories being told, like how Lord Beckett already knew Jack, or the trickery that occurs during the dice game.
But that joy and passion and lore dies REAL fast with the fourth movie, where it's extremely painfully obvious that everyone is there strictly for a paycheck and the franchise is basically dead.
I feel like Rush and Depp are the only two who enjoyed acting in each film they were in the whole way through.
This movie was released in 2006. It's now 2023. That's a time span of 17 years. Nearly TWO decades and still this film's visuals hold up incredibly well. Not to mention, the movie's plot is actually super air tight. AND it's actually a pretty solid foundation for _Avengers Infinity War_ too when you think about it. It does what a sequel should, elevate the world, challenge the characters, and progress the story. For a lot of modern day movies, the main problem is lack of *goals, stakes and urgency.* but here in _Dead Man's Chest_ those three keys to creating a powerful script are perfectly laid out.
*Goals:* Jack needs the key to the chest to escape Davy Jones, Will needs the key to the chest to save Elizabeth, Elizabeth needs the key to help Will, Norrington needs the key to the chest to escape his poverty status.
*Stakes:* if Jack fails he dies, if Will fails Elizabeth dies, then his new goal of helping his father comes into play and if he fails his father is stuck forever, if Elizabeth fails Will is gone etc.
*Urgency:* There's no specific time crunch and that's the most brilliant thing about this movie. You just know there IS a time crunch, but you don't know when ish could hit the fan thus making you the viewer constantly on edge. It's brilliant writing.
EVERYTHING the characters do is because of ONE thing: the chest. Every time you wonder "why is this character in a coffin at sea, why are they stuck on this island-oh to get the key oh what does he need that for oh the chest." it's genius. And this is why a movie will be either good or bad-you need to care about the characters and their journey if you don't care about the characters and their needs, why care about the plot if you don't care about the plot then the movie becomes white noise if the movie is white noise it just did not do its job which is to entertain.

You could argue that there is actually a time crunch once Davy Jones gives Jack three days to find 99 souls
@@jonkornealus9604 well I am a film major so I knew about these elements of screenwriting before but I do like his breakdowns of what works and what doesn't. It is pretty reminiscent of what I learned in NAU.

Eh, I disagree with your points on Will’s motivation for the chest. Initially he was only after the compass to save Elizabeth. For a little while he wanted the key for that same reason, but that all changed when he reunited with his father. After the father son reunion, Will’s main goal becomes setting his father free. This goal carries over into the third film.
Honestly these effects in these films are some of the most underrated effects for when they came they just look so real

Point is, These visual effects artists for the Trilogy deserved every award

3:02: The compass was already hinted to have unusual properties beyond just being broken when Jack used it to find Isla de Muerta in the first movie. Sure, they may not have explicitly stated it was magical, but the hints that there was more to it were definitely there.

Jack Sparrow: “I got a jar of dirt!”

I really thought Doug was gonna point out the scenes with Davy Jones.
When Jack mention Will's in love and when Jones looks at the dress floating in the sea, those are glimpses to the man Jones once was before his heart was broken by Calypso.
But, Doug just passed over those scenes and just talks about how cool of a villain Jones is without even talking about the layers of his character.
Well it focused on the "boring" charachters so it was'nt important apparently.
To be honest he is not that deep. Yes, there's good in him, but his two emotions in this franchise are anger and sadness. Not to mention that I still have trouble understanding their relationship, and more specifically who betrayed who.
@@valentinkambushev4968 I think it's supposed to be that Calypso "betrayed" Jones because she is the sea: the sea is treacherous by nature. It's part of how Jones fell in love with the sea and with a woman.
@Blokewood3 but there's still this whole "Jones told the brotherhood how to imprison Calypso" which I honestly don't know where it fits in the timeline. I guess it happened after she dumped him, but the movie doesn't really explain it well.

I LOVED the Kraken.
The music, the carnage, the tentacles swinging around like crazy. I could watch it on a loop.
The Liar's Dice scene is actually genius if you are able to see the extended version...as well if you understand how to play the game. The whole game plays to the characters of everyone there magnificently.
They actually released a home version of the game around the time when these sequels came out. I played the game with my family back in the day. I remember it being fun.

Honestly, this might be my favorite Pirates movie. I love Davy Jones, I love everything about his ship, I love Jack's interactions with the island cannibals, I love the three-way sword fight, and I love the kraken.
The first 3 are amazing movies ya there's problem but so what it's fun
There are notoriously deleted scenes from this film that would've made At World's End a little more coherent; for example, the liar's dice game between Will and Jones had an entire first round containing major Foreshadowing towards Will's fate and enough fuel to imply the reasoning for Jones' disposition. Another had Elizabeth show her papers from Beckett to Jack, who sticks his tongue out in disgust and further emphasizing their personal enmity towards one another, while another expanded on the scene where the Kraken hunts down Will (in particular, Bootstrap attempts to pin the blame on Jack for Will retrieving the key, to which Jones responds, "What makes you think it's your son that's being punished here?"). And significantly (or not), the scene after Will being whipped had Will Calling the Old Man Out and mentioning Barbossa, to which Bootstrap asks, "Who's Barbossa?" This foreshadows what would eventually happen to him in the next film.
Mmph, don't get the last part. Memory is too fuzzy

For everything this movie doesn't do right, everything about Davy Jones is done amazingly. The look, the dark tone, the inner tragedy, even the weird comedic moments still make for my take on the best Pirates villain

Still stands up to this day.
The guys behind him put so much care and effort into their work and it shows.
Bill Nighy in the mocap suit was brilliant too and you can really see his own mannerisms come out, even when he has a squid face lol.
His GQ interview talking about how Verbinksi got him involved and calling the suit “polka dot pajamas” is charming

@@nadertayeh6809 Yeah, when I watched the first one, before this came out, I though they were implying the compass pointed to the island. He found an island that couldn't be found unless you knew where it was. How? Because he had a "broken" compass that told him where to go. The more detailed explanation that specified that it worked because what he really wanted was the treasure from the cursed isle was clearly not fully thought out before, but fits that just fine.
Fun little fact, when Johnny was doing the I got a jar of dirt part nobody really knew what he was doing so those reactions were real
One of my favorite unscripted moments, next to Heath Ledger's Joker fiddling with the bomb remote before it went off and Jim Carrey Grinch swiping the tablecloth cleanly off the table by accident and running back to finish making the mess.
Similar thing with the return of Captain Barbossa. None of the cast knew he would return and the suprised reactions are all legit.
I wish Doug would have mentioned the improv, but all he knew about was the memes.

This is one of my all time favorite films; just from the opening sequence, I get goosebumps. The menacing music, the rain, a canceled wedding, and that shot of Beckett on horse on a boat and him giving orders 🤤.On of my favorite franchises!
I don't care what ANYONE says. This is one of my favorite movies of all time and in my opinion, one of the best. From the Kraken, The three man sword fight, Jack's attempt to find a new hat amid a massive bar brawl, even Will and Elizabeth who I think are enjoyable characters and that the movies suffered without someone in their roles, and of course one of the best villains of all time in Davy jones.
To this day, the Kraken scenes are two of the best scenes I have ever seen in a film and I rewatch them rather regularly.
Honestly, the only part of this movie I dislike is the whole cannibal island part. Yes it has some fun dark jokes, but it's so damn pointless.
Fun Fact about Pirate Terms: A popular pirate punishment was marooning. The pirate who was being punished was put on an island and left, sometimes for a few days, sometimes permanently. The "dead man's chest" is a small rocky island, so called because the rocks reminded pirates of a ribcage. It has no water or shade, and is so low that waves frequently wash over it. To be marooned on the "chest" was to be given a death sentence under the broiling Caribbean sun.
It was also common to leave a marooned pirate with a gun with only one shot
Honestly I like the first Kraken attack scene. The action is fun, the music is good. And seeing the final two tentacles break the shio in half with that organ solo was amazing to me
plus it explains why Will knows what it is/how to fight it the first time, but is unprepared when it comes back with a vengeance
The first Kraken attack scene also builds up anticipation for the finale. We finally get a good look at how powerful and terrifying it is. Everyone aboard that merchant ship(except Will who had plot armor) basically had no chance. All that devastation, and then we remember that it’s coming after the Black Pearl next. Makes the audience wonder how Jack and friends can possibly escape such a horror. The moment we hear the sound of the Kraken grabbing the Pearl under the water, we know people are about to die. THAT is how you create suspense.

If you ask me, nostalgia critic should not be reviewing these movies If he doesn’t know what he’s talking about and after watching his review As well as the one he did before this, it’s clear that he doesn’t. Everything you described was exactly how it was supposed to go. We have just seen firsthand what the Kraken can do so when we see it now going for the Black Pearl we remember what it did to the merchant vessel, and it creates a sense of dread because now that thing is gonna attack the pearl. When he reviewed the curse of the Black Pearl, he glossed over a number of things. One of the things being when Norrington decides to do as jack sparrow, suggested, and hunt for the Black Pearl. He said, and I quote “why do people listen to this guy“. I can tell you exactly why this shows just how manipulative and cunning Jack sparrow is. It is showing that he knows what makes a person tech he knows what drives them, and it’s clear he uses that to his advantage. The way he words things like when he was trying to convince captain Barbossa to send off his crew to attack the HMS dauntless. He makes it sound like there’s something big to gain from what he’s suggesting they do. He also knows that commodore Norrington hates pirates, so he suggests that norrington go after a pretty big pirate threat (the black pearl) throughout the Caribbean. All of this, I just said, isn’t mentioned directly, it shown and hinted at through clever use of words. Another thing he criticize Elizabeth, when the battle against the Black Pearl and the HMS interceptor wasn’t going so well. It wasn’t even her idea to fight to begin with the person that actually suggested they fight was will turner. Her first thought was to try to escape and then when they couldn’t, she gave another suggestion, which actually turned out to be a pretty good surprise, showing that she is very capable in tight spots. So I don’t know where he’s getting off that she isn’t capable. Don’t get me wrong I still love the nostalgia critic and I enjoy a lot of his reviews but sometimes he can say things that are not very well thought out.

@@grizzly_manbanimation8436 Yeah, I was honestly surprised when Doug said the scene is pointless. It's literally one of the most common ways to establish a threat. Show what is coming for the hero and make it completely obliterate something that isn't the hero. This way we have established a baseline of what could happen to the hero.
I loved this movie when I was a child. The first Pirates of Caribbean didn’t grab me the way the sequel did, it expanded and made the characters of the first movie much more interesting. Til this day, it’s my favorite Pirates movie.
19:16, at the time, Will wasn’t under the impression that Elizabeth Swann was in love with Sparrow. Now he is under that impression because he witnessed the kiss. That’s what changed.
The Davy Jones aesthetics are absolutely mezmerising, everything about this character is great. And when there is a huge pipe organ on the screen, that he is playing, with that yellowish sickening lighting in composition - that single scene is enough for me, to come back to this movie.
His whole arc is what holds together second and third movies, despite any flaws of theirs.

“I got a jar dirt” always made me laugh but it makes me laugh harder knowing that moment was improv and both Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom we’re puzzled by Johnny Depp😂
The compass was magic in the first movie too. Isla de Muerta was specifically described as being unfindable to all except for those who already know where it is. The compass was how Jack found the island before he was mutinied.

Dead man’s chest is a criminally amazing film. Love it.
The trilogy is my favourite to watch back to back. So much fun and entertainment. The third movie feels like an entire climax
Same when put all together it's character development for the core cast and keeps the same tone of funny goofyness that made this so fun to watch and ya some of that is because of Jack and the influence johnny had on the direction but everyone gets time to shine in these somehow
Then they ruined it by making two terrible sequels.
There is a bit of history between Jack and Lord Beckett as the 3rd movie's alternate/deleted scenes reveal that Beckett hired him to delivery cargo, when Jack found out the cargo was transported slaves, he decided to set them free, costing Beckett the profit and leaving Jack branded a pirate on his arm, along with Beckett destroying his ship that was originally called The Wicked Wench. Then Davy Jones comes in and makes a deal with Jack to bring back his ship as The Black Pearl with a dark redesign and be captain for 13 years, though knowing Jack, he tries saying technically I was for 2 years until the mutiny leaving Barbossa as captain for 10 years during the events of the 1st movie. As for Elizabeth using the compass and it's pointing towards Jack, I always took it as he knows about Will, though there might not be much to back that up.
I actually like this sequel. I do think the first act could’ve been condensed down & gotten to its main attraction quicker. But I think the effects here are pretty damn good for 17 years later; plus it is actually Bill Nighy doing mo-cap underneath the CG & his accent choice is funny but a nice touch to make Davy Jones stand out
Here’s something I noticed though, Davy Jones wants 99 souls in 3 days. It’s established in the movie. So why are they being so peculiar about who joins and who doesn’t? They should just take all the 99 that ask to join. They’d all join the crew rather than face a watery grave

The compass was never broken... In the first one it was implied to point toward the cursed Aztec gold. He was using it to return to the Aztec gold. It was never explained how he got it or why it did that, so it was fair game making it a more general compass.
Tia Dalma gave the compass to Jack like she said in Dead Man's Chest then it was retoned in the fifth film flashback the pearl former captain gave young Jack the compass told him not to betray it. My head canon easy fix the former captain was given compass by Tia Dalma and upon she discovering he died she finds out he gave it ti jack and when she meets Jack she lets him keep it as a way to honor his former captain as his tribute.

Fun Fact: Bill Nighy based his Scottish accent on characters from Still Game, a popular Scottish sitcom he was a fan of. It's actually one of the best I've heard from a non-Scottish actor.

I heard they originally wanted a dutch accent but Bill couldn't do one so they went with scottish instead.

The kraken scene was amazing and the punch of the music as the giant tentacle slams down on the ship is so cool.
This is not only my favorite Pirates movie, It's my favorite adventure movie ever. Seriously, the way each of the three acts in the film feel so different yet climactic with their own action set pieces and environments makes it feel like you watched three films in one. It manages to entertain you while simultaneously setting up future events both in this film and the next (I don't like At World's End.) Making the runtime fly by so quickly for me.
I like At Worlds End a lot, but yeah, Dead Man's Chest its a incredible adventure movie

I absolutely LOVED this movie. Davy Jones was such a good bad guy, and that fight on the water wheel with the synced music was mind-blowing.
Is the compass really a retcon? Gibbs tells Will they aren't trying to find north when he questions why Jack is following a broken compass, which suggests that it isn't just a broken compass.
Fifth one gives it more backstory former black pearl captain tells young Jack what to do with it and how to use it.

Regardless of what your opinion of this movie is, you canNOT deny the spectacle of this movie is FANTASTIC! Even someone like me who’s not a big fan of the overall film (particularly the script) will just put it on because there are so many visuals on screen that are SO cool to look at whether it’s Davy Jones or the Kracken or the Dutchman or even the action scenes. They’re so good even by today’s standards.
While I’m not a fan of the script and overall direction of the story it chooses to go, I can’t lie when I say I will turn the movie on even if it is just for the visuals.
I always found the script of this movi eone of the most clever ways to write an adventure script so I don't really get this but I get your point about the visuals.

Doug didn't mention it here, but fun fact: That scene when Jeffery Rush coming down the stairs at the end? Yeah, they didn't tell the other actors it was him. They told them it'd be that female pirate from the first flic. So Orlando Bloom's acting surprise face turning into real surprise was a hundred percent real.
I can't believe anyone thinks this movie is too long! I think it's the perfect amount! And I love that Will and Elizabeth are back, they provide a down to earth perspective on everything and grow as characters themselves. They're like the audience reacting to this insane world, only they're in it.
Yeah, exactly. I think it’s because Doug himself doesn’t like the characters so he thinks that everyone doesn’t. When in actuality, people actually do like the characters of Will and Elizabeth. If you want proof of that, look how the franchise fell apart when they were gone.

Just want to say I love the Pirate of the Caribbean trilogy. Davy Jones is one of my all-time favourite villains because I think he is such a well-written character.
To be fair, the commentary said that the Liars dice scene was cut to about a third of what other was originally intended and the more fleshed out version does a great job of not only explaining where Davy Jones, Will, and Bootstrap's intentions lie; it also seemed to be genuinely engaging and interesting. There is a great video on UA-cam by Lord Ravenscraft that shows how good that scene was written and I recommend it to anyone interested.
Like NC mentioned regarding a lot of scenes in the first movie serving two purposes this one does the same, atleast before it was trimmed with the obvious idea of Will betting his servitude on the Dutchman in exchange for the key, it also shows how much Will has grown given that he wasn't planning on winning the key and only was doing it to find out where it is hidden. It also gives a ton of insight on both Davey Jones and Bootstrap Bill's character and what they are essentially all about.
I think Pirates 2 and 3 are very underrated films, especially 3
The reason the first three movies are some of my top ten favorites is because these were the only movies that my father had in his truck (that I liked) that I could watch on road-trips

Jack's compass was always intended to be magical and there were hints to that in the first movie if you play close attention
The compass pointing to whatever the owner wants the most isn't a retcon. It was hinted at in the 1st movie at the end where Jack looks for his next adventure, the compus suddenly spun and then stuck to one direction before Jack smiles and sails off. Whether it was intended to be a big part of future movies or not idk but they specifically showed that scene to payoff his introduction where they say his campass is useless
Fun fact: Barbossa's reveal was kept secret from the rest of the cast so for the split second you see their faces, those are the actors real reactions.
I know youre gonna tear 3 apart but i hope you give it a shot. I know there are issues but its my favorite of the first 3 because it felt like a truly epic conclusion. Some of it was silly, and yes there was some depp over indulgence but it wasn't cookie cutter and I love soo many things. Plus I love Barbosa in this movie, he's the second best part.
Also surprised you didnt make a joke about sparrow at the beginning when breaking out of the coffin being like Bugs bunny. lol
The third one is a fantastic movie, so magical and adventurous. Hope he can see that, and not only complais about the "complicated" stuff

I remember watching this movie, and I ended up working on the film "THE KEY MAN" as a Locations Assistant. I got to meet Jack Davenport, Hugo Weaving, Brian Cox, & Judy Greer
I think this one was the first pirates film I remember seeing, so the opening with Will and Elizabeth as well as Jack in the coffin were extremely confusing but it all clicked into place years later when I saw Curse of the Black Pearl years later, even after At World’s End
Don't forget about the after credits scenes. There's one after each movie.
This franchise keeps making you coming back for more because i think even though it might not have the best story and the story sometimes changes for some reason, the moments that it does bring is the entertainment and i feel like that can never be lost on a film when it has the most entertaining great moments i don't care how long the film is i come back and watch it in a heartbeat.

It's weird how little recognition that series gets when talking about PotC.
A funny thing about that: with Disney buying Lucasfilms, both the Pirates and MI franchises are now owned by the same company! In fact they briefly met in Sea of Thieves where the Pirates of the Caribbean DLC included a secondary quest explicitly referencing places and events from Monkey Island, effectively merging the two canons.
Gotta admit, the design of Davy Jones is AMAZING

I still like the original three pirates movies, despite their flaws I still had lots of fun with them growing up. And Davy Jones' affects still really hold up

Listen, I don’t normally do this. But Will seeing the Kracken is important because it’s how he knows how to fight it later in the movie. Everyone else would’ve panicked, but Will knows exactly how the damned thing attacks ships because he survived such an attack.
