Westworld Season 3 Episode 7 Recap
Ok so the episode title Passed Pawn of course refers to Caleb. It’s one of the simplest titles thus far and it very much references how in the episode he basically becomes a pawn that is passed from machine to machine.
Initially he was under Rehobum’s control but eventually he comes to be used by Dolores before being passed to solomon. It’s clear that though this episode gives him some agency, he doesn’t have much power in the grand scheme of things.
I think it could also be a play on the words past as in the past and just the phrase ‘passed pawn’ seems to be something that you wouldn’t really say in real life…like can you imagine someone calling someone a passed pawn?
I dunno it just sounds a little off to me, so I do think there is a double entredre within it.
It could be hinting that Caleb used to be a pawn in the army/rico app but it could also mean that he has finally broken free and that when all this is done he will be moving of his own accord.
Caleb has very much been this seasons Dolores, he was joined by a companion that was quote unquote free much in the same way that she was with William and together on their mission he has learned about his true nature and managed to escape from it.
That’s just how I took it but we’ll discuss it more in the video as we get into it.
The episode opens with Rehoboam in complete meltdown almost and the world is very much sort of all over the place. I think that 50% of the planet is probably having a great time and enjoying the fact that they have a bright future if rehoboam is right and the others aren’t looking forward to what could lie in store.
This was very much reflected in last weeks episode in which we heard some staff at inner journies complaining that some of the team had left and they had to pick up the slack. The fact that these guys stayed probably means that they got lucky and we see that in Indonesia people are still enjoying the pubs and clubs like there’s no lockdown.
Here we see Musashi who as we know is Dolores and he sends a briefcase to one of his friends.
We don’t know who this is but it could be but it leaves a lot of things in the air. I did see people on reddit say that it would be the fifth Dolores pearl but I’m sure that was actually Bernard. I think this may have been the special delivery that she received in episode 5 but I’m not 100%.
Anyway Musashi get’s a message from Halores who looks like she’s been sat in the makeup chair at boots for the last week.
Great job.
Now how her face is like this we don’t know but something is clearly up. Either this is a mirror world prediction that didn’t account for Hale getting blown up or in Hale’s anger she has turned to Serac who could have provided her with the ability to fix herself. Heavy, are You suggesting Serac is really just a hologram now, did I understand You correctly ? If this was true, how could he have killed the interrogated guy (the "traitor") with a gun ? Also, after the explosion in Incite he got back from his hologram to the plane, so...a hologram of a hologram ?
So people were asking how the EMP didn't fry their brains. I think the idea is it stopped what we would consider a pace maker. The Pearls look like they are encased in a faraday cage.
I don't understand why they needed to administer reconditioning therapy after Caleb's military stint? From a veteran with no job to Rico app just seems natural and shouldn't require reconditioning. I believe the reconditioning was before he joined military. We still don't know his past before military.

IKR. Maeves vs. Dolores has been a silly idea since ep 2 because they all want the same thing. and then we also have Bernard
westworld is now reminding me of xman where there’s basically 3 powerful main character with simply different ideal, finding no common ground, each is right in their own way, always fighting against each other, always flashing back to their past and entangled history, while getting others into the crossfire

But it hasn't been reviled who planted the bomb and killed her son and husband.. So if it ws doleras of course she would want to switch sides to ge revenge

Maeve doesn't care about destroying humans, she wants to live forever in the sublime with her daughter. She doesn't give a damn about living in the real world.

But someone pointed to me that Caleb's ID # has an "I" (i) in the middle, while William's is actually a "1" (one)

Yea I saw that too and the B on the end of Williams looks like an 8 on Caleb’s. They may go somewhere with it still and it was just the way it was shot but I think it’s just to get more different theories out there so that people keep the hype up.

ALSO, Bernard and William end up at a very old-fashioned gas station; plain old-fashioned gas pumps, cars from the 1960's and 1970's sitting around, which, in that time frame, would be almost 100-year-old vehicles. I don't think that scene is reality, I think is is tied to a memory from very young William and is a hologram - how could there be such a place so far into the future?

That scene wherein Caleb realized that Solomon/Rehoboam had pitted Caleb & Francis against each other with incentives they cannot refuse thus in the end forcing Caleb to kill his friend. It is definitely just like Serac pitting Maeve against Dolores whether she wanted to or not with a proposition that Maeve cannot reject. Literally cannot reject because she’s damned if she do and damned if she don’t. But in the end I don’t think Maeve is just an all out pawn for Serac. Here’s to hoping she’s got a plan up her sleeve.
Caleb getting mad is ridiculous. He and his friend were given an option. They could have chosen not to kill the other. They had free will but they fucked up. You can't fault someone else for your actions, they were not being held to ransom. They could have walked away.

@@SuperIronman911 Francies chose the money to save his father. It was literally stated in the episode that Francis had more to lose. If they did not kill each other both would have ended dead regardless along with everyone they loved. They literally did not have a choice. The way I saw it was how it's based on the false illusion that God gave us free will. So yes he has every right to be angry why should anyone but him and Francis decide how their friendship ends. Plus he wasn't only angry about his Best friend but the overall notion that no choice he has ever made in life was solely based off of HIS free will. Like he said I'm not angry I am enraged.

If I were to offer you a trillion dollars to kill your family would you do it? And if you would do it, it will be very silly of you to get mad at me for killing your family. The choice given to Batman to save one person was a diabolical offer and you can blame joker. The choice given to kill is not diabolical. By the time Caleb met Solomon he already knew the AI was defining a path for humanity. He still had free will just like when he decided not to follow the path and allied with Dolores. So to get enraged now for having killed a friend who valued the friendship solely on money is ridiculous at best dumb at worst.

*awesome shootout? The action sequences in this series are dreadful. That scene on the stairs was awful. Someone standing around for 5 seconds waiting to pull his gun while the female robot fights the first two guys is dumb. Almost as dumb as the street shootout where they were firing machine guns at each other in the open and not hitting anything. And one of those firing the weapon was a robot... can’t she aim?
I noticed that too! Also how many rounds were in that hand guy when Hale was escaping Incite, i lost count after 20.
I dunno why but this episode just didn't pull me in as much as some of the others in this season.. Still good though

It's heavy in exposition. They jammed at least 2 or 3 episodes worth of exposition into this one. Don't know why. It's only 8 episodes this season.

I was LIVID that Maeve did the unnecessary slow walk to Delores allowing her time to get to the EMP.
I just wanted Dolores to die for good. She's such a manipulative fuck. Probably killed all those people in cryo chambers just so her intelligent species can survive and conquer.
I think Maeve being one step behind everyone else is a running motif of the series.

12:20 is it Rehoboam though? I thought the red one is Solomon and the white one is Rehoboam. There is something weird about Solomon in this episode. It seemed almost abandoned and protected by just 5 guards? If it and the facilities were as important as implied they would be heavily protected. But then it said something like "if this is actually now and we are us" can't remember the exact words. If you pay attention, Solomon appears in the trailer for the last episode and it is different. It can't be Rehoboam because its lights aren't white.

But why has serac allowed his physco Ai brother to even exist if he could potentially plot against him?
Remember: plans within plans within plans or maybe simulations within simulations, or both. It may be that all this was predicted and Solomon was left as it was for exactly this purpose because the need for such an anomaly was foreseen to be necessary to facilitate the desired outcome. Whether this would have been initiated by Rehoboam, Serac, his brother or someone else I don't know. This would be similar to and maybe even influenced by the Matrix movies and Isaac Asimov's Foundation series, among others.

@@todgerx Not to mention that Musasholores fires multiple bursts from his machine gun from a few feet away and manages to get one shoulder hit on Clem, while Dolores (and Charlores) has been One-Shotting people and hosts from horseback for the entire series up to this point.
The Plot-Adjusted-Aim is one of the most disappointing parts of the show, given how much attention they put into other aspects.

I guess I am the only one thinking, meh? All the layers and complexity were revealed to be simple twists. Seems like the Ai would know that 2 man capture teams would turn on each other, its so 'predictable'. I think maeves character has fallen apart, trying to meet some digital child again seems ...weak. Top sekret, key to the worlds future, facility guarded by 6 people? and 1 robot? with no RF defenses against drones? the door wasnt even locked, you'd think you would need a badge or something to get in.
Yeah there’s been absolutely no big reveals, even the Dolores hosts ones was a bit meh, expecting a big twist but if not this season has been very straightforward

The only plot twist element that might exist now, is whether Serac is human or not. Maybe Serac is inside Rehoboam and wants to live in the sublime?
Caleb is a copy of William (Caleb's ID number had an "I" in place of a "1" in William's number) put in place by Solomon in anticipation of this time, chosen because of William's original susceptibility to Dolores's influence.
Still That doesn't add up because celab has a completely different childhood and life from mib

He may be but I think If it is the case him shooting the guy was a simulation that Maeve was in which she was unaware of

HBO sold Westworld to Amazon. Next season will be on Amazon. The deal consisted of 5 more seasons and sold for a couple of hundred million dollars. Hopefully Amazon films will get Westworld out much sooner than HBO did. I don't like waiting 1.5 yrs for just 8 episodes. But that's just me. The production values on WW is unbelievable and I hope Amazon doesn't ruin that.

Hale isn't Delores - Hale is a copy of Teddy. That's why so much empathy and why Hale is always referring to "us" and calling Delores by her name, which none of the other "Delores" characters have done. Delores made copies of herself, she made one copy of Teddy to bring with her, and she placed the other Teddy in the virtual paradise last season.
Exactly what I felt from the start, none of the other 'Dolores' copies have shown any real individualism or have habitually self harmed due to feeling uncomfortable in bodies of opposite genders.
Hale is a copy of dolores,you need to let that stupid teddy theory go already he's in the sublime ,sick of these dumb theories,just accept the truth for what it is.
Places where bernard and william are it almost looks as if its in the damn past or a diff timeline man...

Maybe it’s only the cities that have been allowed to develop so places in the countryside still look old? They grown meat in labs so farms would have no value and they’ve already expressed that there is a very strong class system in place so they might have no use for ppl in the country so they leave it behind and don’t develop it that much

But when Dolores and Caleb arrived, the center is empty. Where were William, Bernard and Stubbs? I really think there is different time-line.

I didn't quite get Caleb's storyline. Was he sent off to that facility for them to change his memories AFTER he killed Francis? If so, why did Whitman imply that Caleb was already brainwashed in that facility? If it wast't for Whitman's line "By midnight I'll be landfill or headed down for a long cold nap in Sonora. The same place they reeducated you? Not that you'd remember" I would've thought the succession of events was: Caleb becomes an outliner --> sent off to war --> did a great job, wasn't a threat anymore --> used by the system to execute other outliners --> Francis incident --> Caleb brainwashed in Sonora --> present day. Can someone please say which is the correct sequence?
This confused me too. I THINK the sequence you listed is in the correct order and the memory we saw of the kidnapping was just that, a memory, therefore not 100% accurate. Serac already pointed out the inaccuracies of human memory and we know from our own memories and dreams that we often fill in gaps with with our other memories and experiences and often get things wrong. I think the kidnapping happened but the re-education line was just Caleb working it all out. Like his present thoughts were merged in to the memory. That's my theory anyway.

Well... if it makes you feel better... all humans are related to each other.
I would argue, that because Delores knows she is up against a quantum theory engine, every single character this season so far has been a pawn. Everyone is following the Delores plan, we have yet to see the original Delores. I'm still bothered by the thought of how did the Hale-Delores who got off the island swap her own pearl into a different body? We've only ever seen a Delores wake up Bernard and Hale.
Bernard snaped Dolores pearl into Charlotte's avatar at the end of season 2, remeber?
@@patrikionyc that's exactly my point tho, how did the pearl in hale get into a Delores copy at the start of season three, why do we see a hale being made. Hale and Delores are both already there when they wake Bernard.
this episode made me think back on Person of Interest in a loot of ways.
Unpopular opinion: The science fiction aspect of the show is too many layers removed from reality in season 3 to be any sort of fun as it is not relatable at all.
Why is maeve using a sword all the time? The fight scenes are forced and make hardly any sense.
Maybe to show she already got Musashi-Dolores or to feint that she just wants a melee fight and then surprise Dolores with a gunned chopper?
Because that's what Michone does and the writers are out of ideas.

When was the last time that Serac touch someone ? So it might be true that Rehoboam took his form.
Teddy is in Berlin ..lol... that's all I got. I did feel however that it felt like (for a moment at least) that it was the two AI's that are fighting for control, the schizophrenic Solomon and Rehoboam. Solomon could still be alive I think, he is in what looked like some form of "Pearl" that Caleb picked up before the EMP was hit (It was round, flatter with a red disc on it) ..... So the episode has followed "FutureWorld" the movie to a degree, we now know that people have been replaced (all be it mentally) to serve the greater good. If I was to put a theory out there and this is as tin foil as it gets for me ....... Dolores wants Solomon to release everyone and have humanity destroy it's self ( she has already got the ball rolling, showing everyone their profiles) and she wins..... Sarac wants all the information that Delos has so he can replace everyone (as in futureWorld the movie) with reproductions of everyone, including those that Solomon has in deep freeze .... he then gets control and he wins ..... who knows lol .... but that's my 2 bobs worth
William and Caleb's IDs are not the same. Caleb is 2I and William is 21.
The ID is the same just a small difference stop saying it's not
Calebs mother having schizophrenia and Seracs brother having schizophrenia is to much of a coincidence, 100% feel like they are connected or even related in some way! I thought this episode was a bit under whelming, the Caleb reveal wasn't really much of a reveal and I find his character to a bit boring. I also find it strange how they have sort of just chucked Bernard into this season, like his character really has no point to anything. He went to west world to find Maeve doesn't find Maeve, so just leaves? and theres nothing else to it? His appearances are sooo random, when after last season I thought he would've had an extreme PIVOTAL part of this season. Like him and Maeve teaming up? Interested for other peoples point of view!
Small clarification ... passed pawn is a chess term which means there is nothing obstructing the pawn from its goal (usually reaching the back row and being promoted). Caleb was a mystery to Rehoboam and Serac, and in reaching Solomon was promoted through enlightenment. If the metaphor continues, Caleb will now have extra moves or abilities available to him, perhaps simply through the freedom of choice, or perhaps something more spicy and overt.
Did no one catch the Breaking Bad tribute in this episode? When Caleb checks his phone and sees the assassination order, there is the text “F**k Yeah” at the of the bottom. Clear throwback to Jesse Pinkman’s catchphrase from Breaking Bad

Indeed, besides I recall seeing his character angry and alone (guess in one of the plane scenes). They wouldn’t show such a thing if it was a Rehoboam projection.
What does Haleores being pissed at Dolores this episode and Maeve's storyarc this entire season have in common? Neither makes any sense.
I hope there's some great twist in the last episode, because otherwise this season managed to turn Maeve from sympathetic badass to selfish ass.
I will keep believing that Ford still has a role to play somehow. Like what his true intentions were. Something just seems off.
I guess Ford would come in the end saying this "Future World" story line needs some adjustments 😂😂😂

caleb code is not the same as man in black, one of the characters is I and the other is 1 on the middle of the code.
When Dempsey Jr said “you did it” right before he died i felt like i was watching the TV show LOST again... they did that all the time in that show. unrealistic mystery talk... people don’t fuxkin talk like that.
I've been watching since season one and I can't understand why anyone thinks this is quality story telling. The acting, cinematography, directing, premise is great! But the overall execution is terrible!!!

D M it definitely a budget problem. The show needs to be bigger once its outside of the park but it cost too much compared to the number of people who actually watch the show.
I think this series and season has completely tanked. I still watch it because it’s still worth watching but it’s just meh. Could care less about all these characters when compared to season 1
I thought Serac might just be an AI projection but then he physically places VR glasses on that guy, shows him his future, makes him confess, then physically holds a gun and shoots him in the head right in front of Maeve. Would appear he is real, be it a human or host, now that would be a shocker, a host that wants to be the only host running the human "real" world.
Yeah I think he could be a host but a big theory I’ve seen is that he’s had Maeve in simulations and that that was one of them

Tho thus far all the simulations with Maeve were in warworld, none were ever in the real world. Also, that is Bernard's house that does really exist. We will have to wait and see I guess!
I think the Maeve we see now is Serac. She told Delores not to align her agenda with hers. Just a theory.
One thing that is still fuzzy. Is the earpiece that Solomon created for Caleb just a static set of instructions or does it contain a significant part of Solomon's consciousness. Did Dolores and Caleb just free the demon Solomon from his binding circle? After all, when you create a God you've likely also created it's Devil in the process.
Passed pawn is a chess term. Basically, means pawn is free on board to move to other side, becoming any other, more powerful piece. Caleb is going from a pawn to a more powerful piece in the game.
So, I think Caleb is a copy of Serac's brother as is the Man in black. Somehow it is like Delores who has been able to split herself into multiple hosts, Serac's brother has been "split" into multiple people.
And I am still convinced Serac and Ford are somehow brothers. A lot to cover next week! So excited!

This episode has me asking so many questions. The finale is about to be wild and since the show was renewed for another season, there’s definitely going to be a huge cliffhanger like you said.
OK so here it is, a quick bloody montage next week then a flash. Dolores wakes up like she did in the first episode, she's in a modern room, there is noise, it's a shower, she goes into the bathroom and its young Billy stepping out of the shower and looking very Man from Atlantis-y.
Honestly the only thing that annoys the hell out of me is the typical bad guy aim 🥴😩it's really annoying and takes me out of the show .

I'd say Jean Mi transferred his consciousness into Solomon and Serac now needs Dalos technology to revive him. Serac could be in Rehoboam, but then a lot of hologram scenes don't make sense or would be made just for the benefit of fooling the audience.

Caleb vs Francis, Maeve vs Delores, Serac vs William = Solomon vs Rehoboam. the only logical scenario that Solomon gave Caleb was to turn off both Ai systems and let humanity live without a computer controlling their lives. same for the host I'm guessing....

From my understanding of the end, voice was not an AI, its Major Craddock, similar to how William was greeted when he woke up at the beginning of his simulation. Jonathan Tucker who played the role was credited for this episode as a guest. However I doubt this is a simulation since he's now programmed as a regular host for Sirac as the western accent is gone. In William's simulation he's programmed based on William's memory of him.
It was disappointing to see how weak Sato/Dolores was in the fight against Clementine and the Japanese chick. In episode 6 Hale/Dolores kills about a dozen guards with machine precision with just one bullet for each kill but Sato/Dolores has a fully automatic gun and can't put down Clementine and is easily killed. Yes, he was ambushed but he was expecting that (gun in briefcase). Is it the male body that makes him slow and ineffective? It seems the females are hyper-ninja like while the males are confused and weak; a common theme in SJW Hollywood.

Great stuff as always - I am still finding the show annoyingly overly complicated - I think I should be watching these recaps instead of the episodes. There are never any stakes because NOBODY EVER DIES. One note - Caleb's mom isn't schizophrenic, she has dementia.

I'm really enjoying this season, but there are a couple of issues I can't get past. 1) Why would Charlotte turn against Deloris? 2) Why would Mauve put all of her trust is Serac?
1) Delores didn't care about her dying, she just had a role to play that was all and she was manipulated by Dolores. 2) serac has promised to reunite Maeve with her daughter in the sublime.
Re: The hologram theory at roughly 8:32? How could a hologram of Serac shoot someone? Because we have seen that previously.

I know a lot of people are giving Flack to Maeve for working with serac and stuff but it feels like it's just not that simple. I can't believe that everything that maeve has been through would just result in her being used and discarded. I think she has a plan and I think the last episode is going to be one of those oh darling did you really think that I was being used? I was the one using you type of thing( cliche. I know but it's a good one) because yes she may want her child to think about this she purposely left child into the sublime with her new mom so what is she going to do show up in the sublime and be like nah, I'm your real mom! f that bitch. I think Maeve stop doing this for her child a long time ago and I don't think those are her motivations and I think serac is being played.
@felony jones I honestly think she's going to have a huge art completion in the last episode. I think she's going to be like pulling something out of her hat you know. I mean think about it in her body she was directly talking to Dolores in her head. So that means she has full complete access again to all electronic systems. So that means she has to be able to do something else besides just being attacked dog. She's doing something else sitting up some kind of plan. Like once she destroys Dolores more than likely she'll probably destroy the Rehoboam . Or do something that's clever you know like you didn't think I was only doing one thing you know and she says it up so that everybody else is free as well. I just don't think that her trying to get her daughter back is feasible and I don't think that's her motivation at all and I think she's playing along with that. To get what she wants.
I think "Passed Pawn" is a reference to cal going from being a pawn to a key player. The term in chess, refers to when a pawn is clear to move the oposite player's side and transform into another piece (typically a queen)
How did Caleb's new little electronic personal asst survive the EMP if nothing else in the complex did? ... & did Dolores inadvertently kill all those people that Solomon kept on ice?

Sadly, William's original sin was collecting the Guest's data, building the Forge, and selling his data to Serac. If he'd simply built the Hosts for the park (actually Ford's original sin) then humanity would not in as much danger. So, like his invalid search for the maze, something that wasn't for him, he's gone off his rails and could cause himself and others a great deal of damage. Or, in the next episode or two he might realize his mistake destroy the data.

The idea is that Caleb is the name of whomever's identity he was given after reprogramming.
It being low risk because no friends and his mom already in an institution so who would believe her if she tried to tell anyone.
