    Just wanted to say-- I started watching just on a whim a few weeks ago, and I've really been enjoying this! Your episodes are great; I grew up with my grandma's chickens around, and the neighbor's goats (are y'all ever getting goats? They're great! Goat milk is the BEST) and the terrifying wild gigantic rooster that roamed Grandmama's property that had escaped from somebody's coop-- he hadn't been trimmed, and he'd spur the crap out of you if he could-- and some really big geese and the huge farm garden my grandmama and my great-aunt grew beans, watermelons, corn, strawberries, tomatoes and peppers in, plus their fig tree and the wild blueberry bushes all over the woods. Your videos bring all that back! My own small veggie garden and my pets look so little compared to what you have, but what you do still encourages me. Y'all do such a fantastic job of raising both your kids and your critters, it always makes me feel a little happier and calmer watching how things progress after I get home from work-- I do 10-hour shifts at a hospital, so that's a big help. So thank you for posting; I'll keep watching. May all your plants grow huge, your chickens and ducks lay tons of eggs (and your turkeys too, I guess-- I love duck eggs but I haven't tried turkey eggs yet) and may everything thrive!

    I found it almost 100% effective to take hatchery chicks out to the hen after dark, cover the nest so she or the chicks couldn't leave, then by about 8:00/am release them on the floor. The silly chickens always believed that way they were hers, even after only one day of being broody.

    Becky, If you want a broody hen to accept your hatchery chicks, 1 go into the coop at night (do not turn on the lights use head lamps or flashlights. 2 put some nest material on the ground.3 Put the broody hen on the nest. 4 Place the chicks under her and walk away
    Do not remove the chicks unless she is just totally ignoring them and they are getting picked on. If you want sprinkle chick food on the ground in the morning to make sure the hen is showing the chicks what to eat. It is possible. Good luck.

    Well, Mom and the kids are into planting the veggies as well as Eli his Sunflowers, but watch out don't know how the birds know but they'll spot a mature sunflower head and faster than you can say "Jack be quick", the seeds are all gobbled up, but it is fun watching the birds get the seeds, but its even funner eating the seeds oneself! But where's Dad, ah, probably still snoozin', no way jose! Doing a bit more on his bee Project before going to work, and the footage of the chickens ducks and your big ol' tom, SENSATIONAL! :)

    We have always had success giving a broody hen chicks that we bought at night. They settle in to sleep, all warm, in the morning they go about like its always been that way. They do have to be very young chicks once they get about a week old they don't tend to listen to a mamma hen. Im sure there are some broody mammas out there that just want to hatch their own eggs.

    • @brendamontanye9877
      @brendamontanye9877 6 років тому +1

      yup, that is what I was going to say :). I do it every year. I wait for a hen to go broody and hope that the farm store has chicks. It is so much easier than the brooder. Do it at night!

    • @whitehouseonthehill
      @whitehouseonthehill  6 років тому

      +Skhill Billies - yep, chicks were a couple days old, so I think the timing was right there. Probably confused some of the broody hens that had never hatched chicks and knew that they didn't hatch them out. The one that worked had hatched out some chicks before and she's doing a great job with them.

    In my experience when a garden bed is under the dripline or sometimes even further away, the tree feeder roots will seek out the good soil and clog the soil and rob the plants of nutrient. Also, if you end up with a tom from the poults you can harvest Sir Lancelot and have a friendlier tom for the flock. Growing a tom I think makes them friendlier than getting a grown one, a friends' tom is like a dog, following her around the homestead even with hens around😲😊

  • @faniefaze
    @faniefaze 4 роки тому

    I had one broody hen raising 17 incubator chicks that was already 6 weeks old. You have to remove the eggs from under the broody hen and add the chicks early evening so they have a night to bond and see each other the next morning. The hen will sit out her 21 days before she starts walking around with the chicks, so you have to add the chicks on day 20 or 21.
    I had another hen that was brooding for only 14 days when I added chicks, she remained brooding for another week and refused to leave the nest, despite the chicks. She was also aggressive towards some chicks, probably because her timing was confused by the early chicks.
    Put a hen with your tom so he's not alone. Personally, I would let the tom out and rather have the kids avoid him, it will teach them to be weary and that animals can be aggressive. An aggressive tom will defend against predators, a lame tom will save himself.
