- Welcome aboard for an amazing journey across the Netherlands! Join me on Sprinter 5625 to Amersfoort, departure 8:20, on February 1, 2025. It is a cold winter morning and the trains are suffering from frost on the overhead lines. Do you know what the problem is? Come along and marvel at the large flock of birds at Utrecht Overvecht station. What is going on there? Further on we unfortunately have to wait for the delayed intercity to Leeuwarden. Due to the frost on the overhead lines it is difficult to make up for the delay. Enjoy watching!

Leuke rit Vincent! weer van genoten van dat korte stukje! Ut - Amf is een van mijn lievelings trajecten dus ik geniet er altijd wel van, met name als je op het stukje Intercity spoor rijd Tussen Ut - Bloa!
Gorgeous skies and frosty blue colours. Never heard of trains being delayed by frost on the overhead lines.
It would make the contact between wire and pantograph less reliable, so less power can be drawn through them. The glitchy power supply can sometimes trip out the control systems, so they take some time to recover during which there is no traction. A four-minute delay for an Intercity service can certainly be explained that way. At a couple of points in this video, you can see the sparks on other trains' pantographs when they hit an ice patch and jump slightly off the wire.
Some of Britain's railways have a third-rail power supply, on which the power rail can get iced over as well. Some trains react VERY badly to that, while the older types with camshaft control of resistance banks tend to work more reliably. The sparking there is much more impressive...

When you started up again after the other train passed, what was the purpose of the 4 that appeared below the signal light?
Wachten op een vertraagde intercity bij Blauwkapel.. Dat is bijna standaard als dagelijks reiziger op de 5500. Op de één of andere manier zijn die ICs vaak vertraagd. En wat ik ook niet snap is dat m'n trein tegenwoordig ook een minuut eerder vertrekt vanaf Utrecht Centraal maar dat heeft vrij weinig zin als je toch op een vertraagde IC moet wachten..
