September 3rd, 2006 - By Frank Gonzalez Jr., photo bs Tom Casino / Showtime -Sharkie’s Machine: In a WBC Heavyweight Eliminator bout Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, 233-pound James “Lights Out” Toney (69-5-3-1, 43 KO’s) faced 257-pound power puncher, Samuel “The Nigerian Nightmare” Peter (27-1, 22 KO’s).
The consensus among fight fans was that either Toney would win by decision or Peter would win by knock out. Who would’ve guessed that Peter would win by decision?
Though that’s how it will show on the record, the truth is that James Toney landed the cleaner punches at a higher percentage and for 12 rounds, was able to prevent Peter from landing anything particularly flush. Peter showed some improvements in his skills but against the superior boxer that is James Toney, it’s my opinion that Peter lost most of the rounds.
Toney consistently landed his jab and combinations inside and frustrated Peter, testing his stamina till the end. Peter’s best moments came in the third, fifth, tenth and twelfth rounds, when he was able to do more damage.
It was Peter who looked the worse for wear after twelve rounds. Peter’s mouth and nose were bleeding, his eyes swollen and looking worse for wear than Toney. Toney had out worked and out boxed Peter for the seven of the first eight rounds with jabs, slick defensive mobility and superior ring generalship. Peter was sloppier, winging power punches that were mostly missing the mark and rarely landing cleanly.
Action slowed a bit after the eighth and Peter lost a point for throwing a double earmuff punch during a break in the ninth round.
At times, Peter was able to stun Toney with a few fair shots but Toney took them well and always answered with crisper punches. Though Peter rocked Toney a couple of times, Toney showed a great chin and managed to stun Peter more than a few times himself, while winning most of the rounds. Peter did manage to win the final round by out working Toney.
I score rounds based on clean punching, ring generalship and defense. I don’t know what the criteria are for Dick Flaherty and Alejandro Rochin, who saw the fight in reverse of what I saw.
The official scores were 115-112 for Toney and 116-111 twice for Peter, who won a very questionable split decision. Considering the point deduction for Peter in the ninth, I had it 116-112 in favor of James Toney.
During the post fight interview, Peter was very complimentary of Toney, remarking how strong he was and how well he took a big punch. Peter tried to embrace Toney in a show of good sportsmanship but Toney wasn’t particularly interested in any niceties after hearing the Official scores. At 38 years old, Toney doesn’t have time for bogus decisions in what should be the twilight of his career.
When Toney was interviewed, he said that he definitely won the fight. He said, “Look at my face and look at his, how the hell did he win that fight?” He was right. In his anger, Toney started a ruckus in the ring aimed at Peter’s Manager. Peter was whisked away to the locker room as the cooler heads in the ring cordoned Toney off.
Considering the wild scoring from Press Row, the Official Judges and whoever else was keeping score, James Toney at the least, deserves a rematch.
This questionable result sets Sam Peter up to face WBC Champion, Oleg Maskaev next for the Title. - Спорт

Toney, a true fighter. Old school fighter. Defensive genius. Legend!
I remember Samuel Peter....boy o boy he was a FEARED!!!!💪💯
I don't care if James Toney lost both his fights against Samuel Peter. He was a natural middleweight, but moving up to the heavyweight division, from a middleweight, light heavyweight, and to the heavyweight division tells a lots about his charisma in boxing. He is a genius at what he does best: shoulder rolls and defensive skills.
I think best shoulder roll and defensive skill has to go to Mayweather and Toney close second. But I agree with you, Toney was a freakin beast, going from middleweight to heavyweight.
might be the most skilled technician of all time.
@@saongpark2423toney was better more natural skilled 😊
His bone still grow big at 35
Toney was truly great at middleweight, super-middleweight, light-heavyweight, and cruiserweight. But when Toney fought at heavyweight, he got the 🦃 stuffing boxed out of him against Hasim Rahman, although it was RIDICULOUSLY declared a draw even though Rahman clearly outpointed him 117-111. Samuel Peter boxed the 🦃 stuffing out of Toney in their second meeting, however, to be fair, I thought Toney won their first meeting by three or four points.
Wow. This match was really exciting! No holding back, they kept swinging to the end. Both guys r built like houses.dang!
The fast upper body movement of Tony is amazing.
Toney was D most unknockoutable/unstoppable fighter in history. Rock solid chin, excellent defence and pure natural fighting stamina…
K u hear him lately talking
@@paulwatson255 ikr people will swear he sounds normal too so they don't feel bad
@@joys8634 so give me yr take on he sound , the same way how thamos hearns sound
Unfortunately Toney sustained massive damage throughout his career and has serious CTE because of it.
@@tee-roni420Peter f*cked him up
Toney was a beast, awesome boxer !!!!! I love this guy 🥊🥊🥊
Wow. Nice to see two heavyweights really going at it. Congratulations to both fighters for fighting the kind of fight that fans want to watch.

😊
I will never understand how Toney had that sort of stamina at that stage of his career. The guy was so relaxed and composed never tense. He was drinking a gallon of cola at sparring sessions 😄
He loves fighting
And only ever SPARRED lol, mans hated roadworks. Just loved to spar anyone. James Toney is one of my all time favs
@@Aiden-ez4rc he is a legend and fearless, something you wouldn’t understand. You have to have walked a mile in his shoes,UA-cam comments does not make a warrior.
LmFA0 @ "gallon of cola"
Drugs drugs
Now that is what you call a heavyweight fight. Two heavy men slugging it out. 😂😂😂😂
I like it. But I also like when some skills are shown
Ali Frazier 1
@@mahndasavageENT Tooney was one of the most shilled fighters that ever lived.
Lights Out has the sickest style in boxing and it’s proven as he transcended weight classes and Father Time. His style is like a Golden Bear golf swing. James is one of my top favorites of all time he is a master in the ring
Special mention of Samuel Peter showing some strong improvement in boxing moves, he was 'boxing boxing' with one of the best of the era and doing well too. Good stuff this fight!

Peter didn't allow Tony's slick moves from discouraging him from letting it go.
You don't see big boys like that,in boxing world today go all 12 rounds, swinging like middleweights.lot of heart.
Facts!
You really can't tell the story of boxing w/out including James Toney. This is a former middleweight champion fighting one of the hardest hitting heavyweights of his era. And he did it twice. Incredible.
James Tony is a great fighter - FOREVER!
Toney won this fight
I thought Toney let up the last two rounds.
If only Toney took training more seriously.......an artist, no doubt....
I still feel Toney landed the cleaner punches in this fight...true Samuel swung a lot more...but what criteria should the judges use in deciding??
One of the best I have seeing. Tony is a monster.
Ain’t no heavyweights like this no more.
Samuel Peter the Nigerian nightmare,
Built like a tank and could take punches like nobody since.
Check what Klitschko did to him, he refused to fight.
@@pabllok no shame in being stopped by one of the Klitschkos
@@pabllok that was when he came out of retirement. Relax.
@user-ex8lz6ci7i I didn't know that, but anyway, Vitali was much older than him.
Toney was a overweight OLD MAN and Peter couldn't knock him out.... what if Toney had been 10 years younger? Peter has no real defensive skills...
Great excuse buddy😂
Damn the 10 years younger. If this had been the Toney who dissected Holyfield (3 years previously I believe), Peter wouldn't have seen the 12th round.
@@softbigotry4058 I disagree
All these "ifs". The fight took place when it did.
If the fight had raken place 10 years earlier Samuel Peter would have been a 16 year old kid. An equally pointless statement. 🙄
That’s one thing about skill it travels no matter how old
James toney sure does love to fight taking on giants like Sam Peter must have been fun
He is fearless just as Evangel Holyfield
One of my favorite boxers. He gets overlooked and robbed a lot in da boxing game

Consider Toney was a natural middle weight, who basically got so fat that he become a heavyweight at the tail end
of his career, and still being able to compete with the elite heavyweights...
He literally went blow for blow whereas Roy Jones is about being evasive. If Roy got caught he would be in a coma. Peter was the one of the heaviest punchers at the time.
@@bluwng Come on man Roy could take a punch even in that exhibition against Tyson he took some heavy ones and didn't budge. And he's an old fat man. Imagine in his prime.
@@joerivandeweyer3056 Jones was an awesome fighter but never had a good chin. See vs green, tarver, Johnson, enzo as just a few examples. He's been ko'd hard many times, often against non punchers. Toney on the other hand had a chin made out of granite
@@Adidasler593 Green as in Mitch Green? yeah James Toney is a straight up G. Just watched the Holyfield fight. Man if you can dominate Evander like that: phew. Anyway, my personal all time best chin is Oliver McCall....
@@joerivandeweyer3056 No, Danny Green the Aussie that Jones fought at cruiserweight. Oliver McCall had an unbelievable chin!! I remember watching his second fight against Lewis, where he had a mental breakdown and stopped defending himself. Lewis had an open target and was landing bombs but they didn't effect McCall in the slightest. It's a good thing the ref stopped it because McCall would have stayed on his feet until the end just letting Lewis hit him. My pick for best chin is Ali.
His defence was slick as hell .. but a consequence was all them shots to the back of his head .. great fighter, jus saying he can barely speak anymore
Toney was blessed with good hands
When Samuel Peter is the fittest with the better physique in a bout .. you know the other fighter is James Toney 😃
At this point in time real heavyweights were afraid of Sam's power and he was avoided and ducked.
NOT JAMES TONEY!!!!!!
Heavyweight Vs a middleweight legend.. Toney wasn't scared of anyone
One hell of a slugfest. The crowd got their money's worth.
Samuel won but toney is from another era- a warrior in each word.
No he didn't
He is surely a warrior and a hall of famer.
Toney was the best in his day at rolling that shoulder.
I agree and I know I'm gonna catch some shit for this but I've earned my opinion. I've been watching and following the sport I love still just over 42 years. And no they where better in my youth fights and fighters I'm not crazy about Jones Jr. In my humble opinion tone had a better career

Toney LOVED to fight. A special breed.
Tony was brave to get in the ring with Peter he is a monster
Tony never feared a man
Sure Sam Peter is a monster but James Toney is a beast, a fucking animal. Had James Toney been more athletic in addition to his natural talent, he'll put Sam Peter's lights out. James is Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather combined minus the athleticism. He almost have it a great chin, heart, high fight IQ, had dynamite for hands, excellent defense and timing. I hope we can see another fighter who possesses the same style and attributes of James Toney but thats very unlikely because he is one of a kind, a really special kind of fighter.
His head movement was crazy
Toney looks like he ate his way to the heavyweight division.
😂😂😂
Wow, I forgot how HUGE Toney got. But still always a crowd pleaser!
Seriously, this dude won a title at middleweight lmao.
@@725k9 He was robbed couple of times too.
I wonder...I think Toney would have beaten Tyson. 🤔
Would have been a hell of a fight! 👊
James Toney the legend
Toney is one of the best ever
Toney showed his Pernell whittaker like defensive skills here.Peter found it hard to land with James's bobbing and crouching but probably edged it on aggression.
This is absolutely better than Fury vs Wielder III.
Great fight performed by two well fed boxers !
That was one of the greatest fights ever. All out war
Peter is just an unorthodox fighter a brawler
Tony Stark vs Peter park in a parallel universe
Toney's problem was he never should've been this heavy. Slowed him alot
Can't believe how big James got
agreed
did he hit the bag or the fridge?
Mm he grew
James has got some mad defensive skills
James toney fears no one. Even fought against randy couture under mma rules.
James Toney is the modern day Sam Langford.
James Tony is a better defensive fighter than Floyd
if Tony was a true heavyweight and not a bulked up middle he would've beaten Peter easily imo
This is boxing at its best
Those big gloves look funny after watching UFC
Samuel obviously deserved the Glory, although the fight was Closed but differences was very cleared.
from 160 middleweight to this monster for Toney ??
Peter is handsome. From modern my favorite boxer
What a fight!
This is a very good and interesting boxing match with a high tempo and a lot of aggressive, not that bullshit joshua vs usyk fight
Joshua could not have taken this punch fire works. He will collapse in round 2
Wouldn’t say the aj fight was bullshit was ok technical fight wasn’t a bad fight I’ve seen worse can’t go in swinging it’s boxing match after all.
Its also only 10 minutes of a 12 round fight!
@@obinnabede6718 aj better boxer than Peter let’s be fair I don’t see aj a week fighter he’s been a world champ I don’t get it.
bullshit fury vs wilder sold fight, total shit and total pretended theatre

Ему бы вес набрать))
Great fight, they both won
I remember watching this fight live and feeling like Toney was robbed.
pre 2000 boxing is always the best. These boxing/brawling fights are way better than today's more evasive/defensive sytles.
tony one of the most underrated fighter and a big part has to do with his own doing and not taking his training serious and it got worst the older he got and still he was amazing and the stuff he did in that ring is shit you see in movies one of my favorite fighters of all time inside the ring not outside also people think floyd started the shoulder roll Tony was using the shoulder roll when floyd was still in pre-school if Tony had Mayweather work ethic i have no doubt he would of become one of the greatest of all time him and Zab judah made it so frustrating to be fans of them bc they could of been much much more then they became
Toney, is not underrated.
@@crazykocounters4741 Why you hating on Toney?
Name another 5.9ft fighter that went from middle weight to heavyweight and won a belt, and never got knoked out?
Beat undefeated fighters like nunn, and was very avoided fighter.
Saying he's not underrated🤣🤣🤣
Clown.
If I asked my dad, or uncle who James Toney was, they don't know.
That's underrated and under appreciated.
@@gigas302 Toney is one of the most recognized fighters in the sport. Very famous for his defense, counterpunching and the unique shoulder roll. Pretty much every person who watches boxing must know about him.

Had James Toney been more athletic and more disciplined in his training, he'll put Sam Peters lights' out.
I still can't believe Toney beat Holyfield...
He beat Evander OLDyfield.

Holyfield was recovering from an injury , shoulder I believe
@@deanvoss7098Toney had 2x the fights as Holyfield and they were close in age… not sure what ur point is
Peter knocked down Wladimir Klitschko 3 times, he didn't come close to doing the same to Toney.
if Toney had more power as a heavyweight, he could still be fighting (just a slight exaggeration). His defense and ability to roll with punches is incredible. Speed was still good too, but just not enough power.
Yea he'd Bob&duck punches head about foot&hf from canvas, like one other guy Mike Tyson only other one I seen doing that.
Toney had good power, Samuel Peter was just alot bigger and had a good chin. Remember toney stopped Holyfield, sure holyfield was old but still it's not like he had a weakness with his power
@@josefjusufssob4351 Holyfield was knocked out because of exhaustion. Threw too much punches for his stamina at that age to handle.
Nice 👍
Like two bulls in a telephone box
James toney god damn
Monstruous fight as tua vs ibeabuchi
Wow un combat époustouflant
James Toney , heavyweight Floyd
Thony was suprised by the potatos of Peter.. Haha haha
A in shape Toney at heavyweight would have been a big problem
I wish toney vs mike tyson could have hapened
I thought Toney would win the fight because of his well calculated punches. Big up Toney
This is best fight ever
Toney won this fight hands down. Clearly the judges didn't like him.
Am not sure any of the today's heavyweight fighters can beat this guys of then am not sure they don't stand to fight but run around and back footing and and throwing few punches
You're absolutely correct. I've watched, Deontay, Fury, AJ, none of them come close
Samuel Peter looks like a concrete wall...crazy!
These guys were feeding each other bombs and just eating them. 😄
Ex middleweight vs a Super Heavyweight
James Toney was the most pure and amazing boxer, skilled in every aspect. Stuff legends are made of. Peter won but has no power, but stamina like a bear.
Any heavyweight has some serious power and Sam Peter surely packs a punch. The thing with James Toney is he knows how to ride with the punches and with his amazing chin, almost never fazed him. The only thing that James lack as a fighter is the athleticism and somehow the stamina.
Wouldn't it have been awesome if Toney won a heavyweight title? He fought well against Peter. That's awesome coming up from middleweight!
He won a heavy title(Ruiz)... stayed in that division like he belonged. Detroit-Toney is best I ever seen
He briefly won a heavyweight title when he beat Ruiz in 2005, but was stripped a few days later when he popped dirty from steroids. When Toney moved up to heavyweight it was obvious he was juicing big time.
beautiful sliding
I would love to have seen Toney vs Monzon. Toney would have given Monzon fits. As good as Monzon was, anything he tried would be stifled by Toney. The only chance Monzon would have is keeping it outside and he couldn't do it forever.
This was some fight, they threw heavy punches the whole fight, hats off to both men it was close but peters threw more punches ,entertaining to say the least ,and thank God no one was hurt bad.🙏✌️
Toney had a rubber chin and great skills
props to Toney , he is not natural hw, but so slick and tricky
Who ever thinks Toney won this fight is clearly delusional
If these heavyweight fight the heavyweights today in boxing I reckon the heavyweights today will have a tough time...lol
Сэм прекрасен в своей простоте!
Love JT. Just a tough guy. Like another tough guy of the same ilk, Ray Mercer.
Tony and Samuel are twins.
