- Previously on the brink of bankruptcy, Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio is now on track to be one of the biggest EV companies in China, trumping all but Tesla… for now. Join us for this detailed look at how Nio went from nothing, to rivalling the likes of Tesla, in the space of just a few years.
The Chinese startup formerly went by the name of NextEV, a company with roots similar to those of global superstar Tesla, albeit in a different location. To gain traction in the automotive world, NextEV’s first initiative was a limited run electric supercar. This, the EP9, would be the turning point for the company which would, from now on, shall be known as Nio. With a range of more than 260 miles, it was built in conjunction with the firm’s Formula E division. Six of these 1,360 horsepower hypercars were sold to investors for over $3 million, while a further 10 models went on to be publicly owned.
After the success of this limited car, it’s hard to believe that years later, the Chinese startup would be facing financial difficulties, but that’s exactly what happened when in 2019, the company was on the brink of bankruptcy. It was the $1.4 billion investment from the Chinese government in early 2020 that saved the company, but in return it would lose a 24.1% stake which would then belong to the government. Later that year, it climbed to be the 5th most valuable automaker in the world, after Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen and BYD, another Chinese car manufacturer.

The release of the ET7 is basically NIO saying they have no interest in competing with Tesla's model 3/Y or 25k car that will come out in 2022-2023

NIO battery swap stations will be interesting. But if Tesla delivered over 116k Model 3s (in China, 2020) and NIO only had 43,728 total deliveries in 2020, hard to say Tesla falls below 1st place come the end of 2021. Of course this is all speculation, never the less great work from NIO and their team. With the ET7 releasing this year and the rumors of a 150kWh solid state battery coming soon, things are going to be fun to watch. Any thoughts on the ongoing lidar debate though?

Everything about Tesla is crazy! The battery life, the tail lights, the interior etc. Tesla stocks is the best of them all! I have always hoped to invest in Tesla stocks one day but the thought of doing so without enough knowledge of the stocks market makes the whole thing less attractive to me. One cannot afford to lose big sums at this pandemic era.

A lot of people missing a great perk of battery swapping. Bigger battery means more weight, leading to less efficiency. Thus, having a smaller battery for city commute, and being able to swap to a bigger battery for longer trips is very practical.

I hope NIO gets to every major city globally. Densely populated cities are where NIO is needed most. Where I live, people commute primarily via gasoline cars and it’s frustrating how you will only see 1 person in each car every time. While NIO are not set out to solve congestion problems at least they will solve the pollution problem first.

NIO, Xpeng and BYD are the brands to watch for the EV market. They've got the technology, based in China the biggest EV market by far, and policy support from the government.
What about Li auto?
They will get sales in west as long as they can prove that they aint sharing data etc. with ruling communist party. That is main issue that might limit their access to USA and EU.

Battery swap is stupid. If they’re successful they’re going to have to axe it.
1. Tesla super chargers only take 25 minutes so you’re only saving 10-15 minutes, and you have to plan ahead of time for a battery swap.
2 battery swap infrastructure is insanely expensive compared to supercharger and require human labor.
3. It makes the company less flexible when it comes to battery design as they have to continue to accommodate models which is expensive.
Very impressive business model, I think they are going to be a top five car company in the future.

Also, Tesla has the biggest market cap in the world when compared to all other automobile manufacturers. The global market is wide open. China allowed Tesla to move in and make a vertically integrated giga-factory. Tesla's global production is up to 500,000 vehicles per year already. Tesla really is lightyears ahead in the production of ev's. vs. China based companies. BYD is actually the biggest player in China and they too make EV's. China won't need to worry about squeezing out Tesla for more market share for a couple decades. Now, having said that, it is the autonomous driving AI technology to watch out for. :)
Competition is healthy. Just like toyota, honda etc i think the future competition will be between tesla, nio and other potential EV makers

After apples coming, it helped the establishment of domestic supply chain which then cultivate the Huawei oppo OnePlus etc. Tesla is the same, it's production in China means it will also brings new blood to all the downstream supply chain which could be beneficial to other domestic EV brands. Uber is another story, its business model was not hard to copy which gradually lose the competitiveness to other domestic competitors. The end story is Uber sold its business to Didi. I think it's pure business, government did not really ban anything

European big names must get their act together fast to catch up, not an easy task with so much traditional technology baggage.
Wolkswagen is catching up. Last year they sold 250,000 electric cars, (ID.3, Audi eTron) half of what Tesla sold.
Not entirely convinced by the sustainability of the "swapping battery" technology, for which you'll need A LOT a new infrastructures, besides charging stations for normal battery charge. The charging truck also is a good idea, requiring infrastructures spread all over the globe. Speaking about NIO cars design, i think they look good, despite not being much different from something seen elsewhere...but, hey, that's the chinese way!....can't wait to see what they will be able to do in the next future!!

Many people had made an attempt to be better for their environment for the past 5 years, some people had built a house along with the tree, some had made a friendly plastic bag, electric stove, etc. I remember when I'm in 1998, the oxygen and the wind is so cool. I even sleep outside of my house during the day. Now, I can't do that anymore. It is so hot. Many people build a house and there is almost no tree left. Our building needs AC, the cool of weather and AC feels different. And I like the cool weather more. Some birds have also gone from my place, I don't know if they are extinct or what.

I saw a video that if we were to put solar panels in the dessert we can power the whole earth and it may make that dessert be able to rain since the solar panels would block the reflection of the sun and allow it to condense some water.

There will always be some sort of problem whenever u disassemble and assemble back the parts of a car. It will always not be 100 percent good. But they focus on short waiting time that is why this will be favorable to some people.
