To be able to play these transcriptions and to play them so well!
Mūza Rubackytė makes a powerful case for the quality of Liszt's transcriptions.

She definitely absorbed the Lisztian stage presence. Gesticulated enough that Liszt would have been proud.
This video popped up in my feed so i feel the need to respond. These works are not important, any piano performance or music major with knowledge of the piano could create similar works. Why is this video a thing? I sneeze and i arrange a piece to solo piano from voice and piano, as do all of my former classmates, yet we're spending our time watching this nonsense?
Just because Liszt did something doesn't mean it's good or musically worthy of analysis. Liszt spent many years being a musical genius that was stifled by being a touring virtuoso. Much of his music is very simple. Why pianists and audiences haven't caught on can only lead to the fact that audiences pay for trash. So that's what we play.
I recommend Alan Walker's books on Liszt. Should be required reading for any music major, piano performance or other.

Liszt's transcriptions, paraphrases and other "free" interpretations for solo piano are actually an important and extraordinarily beautiful part of his immense compositional output. Particular personal favorites: his re-ordering of Schubert's Schwanengesang into a convincing cycle (Schubert's wishes are unknown, as these songs were published posthumously); the Remniscences of Bellini's Norma; and all of the Verdi Paraphrases.
