The "hard-light" afterburner of the 6's J75 is a sound I'll carry to my grave. It was especially awesome from under the airplane when it was tied down on the trim pad. It made yer kidneys wiggle!
I almost had tears in my eyes hearing the beautiful sound of those 6's. I can close my eyes and see that same picture where I was stationed, in Duluth, MN in 1970. Beautiful aircraft.
They were stationed at McCourt Air Force Base Washington during the 60s 70s into the 80s. Used to love the watch and take off in the evening with full afterburner. Was the base photographer. Got to shoot them flying around Mount Rainier. Beautiful aircraft. God bless America
I always thought that she was the prettiest, too, and I was an F4 Phantom II USN ordnanceman. I remember seeing one take off from NAS Key West when my squadron was there TDY for hot pad duty. I guess we rotated with the AF daily for 5 minute and 10 minute alerts. 1970, and we stayed at the Blue Lagoon Motel.
I think I may have been at this airshow. I went to several in at Griffiss in the mid 80's. I can hardly believe I got to see these 106's still operational. Quite something to see!
dukeford I lived in Rome New York and was raised there and born there. We always loved Griffith. Beautiful base. I no longer live there but I'm happy to see this video.
The 49th FIS was my first duty assignment out of tech school I, 1976 to 1977. I worked in the supply office located in between the the two big hangers on the flight line next to operations. I remember the squadron commander at that time was full bird Colonel Williams. Got to know him a little on the base golf course of all places. I have fond memories of the place. Left for overseas duty in summer of 77' to Turkey of all places. The only problem with Griffis AFB was the frigid winters they have in upstate NY. And the horse flies in the summer that would take chunks of skin with every bite! Being part of ADC on a SAC base had its advantages I got to hitch a ride cross country on a KC135 tanker that needed to get some x -country time on the books. Ended up at March AFB and a nice trip to see some family in the Anaheim area. I visited a few years ago since the base closed. It's not the same but I did recognize some landmarks.
Put on my base dream sheet for Griffis when I completed my year (66-67) in Keflavik Iceland working on 102's - avionics. FIgured they would like that experience. NOPE! 😩 I got Dover AFB, Delaware MAC transports and had to learn three different multi engine transports, 141, 133, 124. In the service they send you where they need you. Those big transports were harder and more riskier to work on. Dover also had a 106 ADC squadron so I got to see them a lot.🗽🇺🇸
Was assigned to the 49th FIS DET#1 ,Niagara Falls Int'l Airport 1968 thru 1970. F-106 was a great machine. Never any problems Easy to load and unload. Wish it wad still in inventory.
I was a T-33 Crew Chief at Griffiss 82-86, then became an office puke for the last year of the squadron. Closed down in 87. Best assignment I ever had...
Worked At 'Boston Air Defense Sector' Syracuse NY.(SAGE) 1963-1965 In Those Days... We Flew F-101's Out Of Griffiss AFB. F-106's Only Flew Out Of Otis AFB And McGuire AFB In Those years.
Living in North Utica all the aircraft from Griffis would fly by low including the B52s, KC135s, T33s and of course the 106s. It became like white noise at all hours of the day but it was really cool.
I remember that show. I also remember the Blues in the A-4 a year or two prior as well. Griffiss had the best Commanders day air shows I have ever seen., but my favorite part was heading up to the Observation point to watch the arrivals burn off extra fuel woth highspeed passes etc.
I worked Crew Comm and SART Team for Comm Sq, 1983-1985. Our office was up on SAC Hill in 41st & CP bldg. Remember in late Oct '84 one of the Darts crashed up near the Oswegotchee (?) Forest up on the edge of the Andirondacks. Spent a week up there manning a mobile CP, a radio maint person and I living with our eqpt out of the back of a covered pickup while 4 SPs enjoyed the hard ground in small tents.
scott malone I was AGE (call sign Yankee) 79-82. Delivered mobile generators, air carts, etc. to Hotel Row, and the barns. Used the blast deflector at the Test Cell to heat beanies & weanies.
Why US fighter aircraft designers never stuck with the simple, sturdy delta wing I'll never understand. They could have continued into high-tech 3rd and 4th generation Daggers with thrust vectoring, lighter weight, and vastly more powerful turbo fan engines.Ask any pilot who's had the opportunity to fly delta wing fighter aircraft what they'd prefer given the choice.General Dynamics put a delta wing on an experimental F-16 and it kicked ass on the conventional F-16 across the board.Plus,it's sexy.
I HAVE PROPERLY TOOK A PICTURE WITH THE F-106 IN THE AIR FIELD WITH FAMILY . i WAS TOO YOUNG TO KNOW IT . MAY BE GRANDFATHER CHONG HONG PENG CALL ME TO TAKE A PICTURE AND HE DIRECTED ME TOA POSITION IN FRONT THE WHITISH JET FOR A PHOTO SHOT .
My home town. Used to love watching all the planes fly over my folks house.

still the prettiest fighter ever built and, yep, the hard light of the j75 a/b is unforgettable
You nailed it, and a good dogfighter too, wish we could have had a next gen
of her for air to air.

I vote for the Starfighter. Anyway, the Delta Dart was beautiful too.

Most beautiful aircraft ever.
This excellent video really brings back memories. Griffiss was my first duty assignment 1975-1977.

Always love seeing the F-106, I was a weapons control systems mechanic on these babies at Paine Field in 1966-68

do you remember what armament it could carry? i want to know from someone with firsthand experience :)

I was stationed @ Griffiss AFB 76-80 with the 416th SPS and walked joker9 and worked gate 5, until I cross-trained in 1980.Great base beautiful plane.
Yup- Me 2. 80-84 (Fox1 was the worst, but getting Sierra 1 Post, made your night)
My dad flew these in the late 50's and early 60's. I have heard a lot of detail about flying them. Glad to see this video.
Neat!

Was stationed at GAFB 1975-1977, KC-135 crew Chief type. Never seen a F-106 there.
My brother was an MP stationed at Griffis. I remember visiting the base as a kid back in 84'-85'
Frecce Tricolori was there at Griffiss in summer of 86'. Blue Angels did their 3rd show ever in their new F-18's at Griffiss in June 1987.
I was there with CAP for both Air Shows. Wow small world.
I remember that show. I also remember the Blues in the A-4 a year or two prior as well. Griffiss had the best Commanders day air shows I have ever seen., but my favorite part was heading up to the Observation point to watch the arrivals burn off extra fuel woth highspeed passes etc.
Isn't the sexy 6 lovely I'm just plane crazy about it.
I probably watched it back then. Was in CAP in HS, in Rome NY. You can see the ALCM bunkers on the hill in back.

Griffiss was my last duty station, 416 SPS, end of '71 into '72. It was a SAC base before it became a superfund site.
Pretty much the way I remember them. Griffiss AFB 1975-1977.
I was stationed with the 49th between '82 and it's closing in 87. Worked in Ops, Sometimes it was fun, mostly I was dodging Col. Rodgers.
My home turf! I cut all the grass by the bombers and fighters for my summertime job! Once Griffiss shut down the entire city went down the sewer pipe!
Born and raised in Rome. Yes it has.
I too, had cut the grass there. I was in the 416th Civil Engineering Squadron, Pavements & Grounds, 78 - 80
I was a crew chief on them at Griffiss until 1983 when I got out of the Air Force.

Absolutely amazing
At the verrry end of the video - what jets have the numbered vertical stabilizers?
Thanks...good quality from 1986.
Went to tech school for KC-135A's at Griffiss in 1981. Loved watching the 106's fly...
My Dad flew that 6, thanks for posting!
When?

Great vid!
I worked in the weapons storage area 84 - 88. It was a beautiful area then. Now not so much.
This video quality is awesome! And, I wonder if Joseph Jacobs ever watched this video? Did your parents find you this day?
I think i m too late to start love in this jet,btw is this 48 FIS or 318?
I guess I am not the only one from the 48th Fis

I controlled these birds for NORAD. Kilo Hotels.

To think El Prezendete GW Bush passed up flight time in these beauties. How did ANYONE vote for him?
49th FIS. 77 - 85, MA-1 Mock Up
