  • I turn an old crib into a Parallelogram baby gate. And I show you how I did it.
I made this because my wife saw the following video and fell in love with this design.
Original Idea from Matthias Wandel: • Parallelogram baby gate

Thank you for sharing this. I just finished our gate using the crib slats and put a gate catch at the top and bottom to keep the little ones from trying to get it open.

Nice Job. I find it so rewarding to get daily use out of one of my projects! suggestions for next time. setting up a fence on the drill press would have made it so the holes on the rails would at least be consistent one way. and a Brad point bit may have helped the other way. however looks like it turned out just fine!

+Honeycutt's Woodshop Thanks for the input! I am definitely planning on building a drill press table with a fence sometime in the future and see if that helps. One idea I had after I did this was: when clamping the rails together clamp them so they are offset 1 inch (since they are 2 inches tall). this would make it so instead of the rails being mirrored they would be facing each other. The effect this would have would any mistake of the hole instead of doubling the distance would negate it and would not be able to bind. I should probably make a video of this idea as I am having a hard time describing this idea in text.

I like that you used a old crib to do this but then I started to wonder where the baby sleeps now or maybe that's why you needed the gate? LOL!

The gate is there for when we need to prevent her from going up the stairs. Stairs can be dangerous to babies.

Great project. Can I ask whether you buy screws especially or just use whatever you can find? I noticed you mention that you used a couple of screws from a baby gate you disassembled, and later on you mention that the screw heads broke.
I do (more so "did" now) a lot of outdoor woodwork (fencing decking, pergolas, garden furniture etc..), and after spending six months thinking I was saving money using the cheapest screws (and constantly having them break or round off) I could find I discovered what it's like to use a decent quality screw when a friend gave me a box, it totally blew my mind.
I've never looked back. Anything I screw in now, I know (from experience) that I can go back to it 5 years down the line after it's been exposed to all sort of of weather and I can unscrew it, and re-use it with no issues.

Thanks! I am definitely leaning towards buying quality screws in the future. The screws that broke were from the hinges that I bought. The ones from the gate were solid. I have had several screws that came with hinges break, but each time I start a project I forget to get quality screws instead of the ones that come with them. I will definitely not make that mistake again.

My husband uses these plans from Stodoys and is very happy with them. However. I love yours!
