- Mr. Roger's wife Joanne opens up to Heather Catlin about the new movie 'A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood' starring Tom Hanks.
She wants people to know her husband wasn't a saint. He worked hard and "walked the walk." She also revealed Fred was a HUGE fan of Hanks, watching 'Forest Gump' more than 40 times in the theater.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood opens in theaters Nov. 22.
I love how she asks if they ever argued, and she goes on to tell the most wholesome example
Mr..Rogers' wife
Mr Fred Rogers was a honorable man. May he, and his wife Joanne Rest in peace.
I'm glad to hear that she confirmed that her husband was an ordinary man, just like we all all. That's encouraging, because it shows that what he was doing is well within the abilities of us all.
I don't think Mr. Rogers would be too happy if he saw how many people are calling him a saint. He was just a person just like anyone else, the only difference is he tried his hardest to be kind. To put him on such a tall pedestal would be to say that to be as kind as he was is unreachable to the average person when it's not.
Beautifully said.
❤❤
That's what all real saints would feel, proving he is one.
Sainthood was something he felt would affect his humility. He was a hard working, humble man.
Chaz and CC, very well said. :)
A huge part of why I find Fred Rogers so inspiring is that he showed that every single person has the capacity to change lives with nothing but kindness and compassion.
I'm here because we just sadly lost her. RIP Mrs Rogers
but her and Fred have finally reunited again after all these years he passed and that's something to smile about
Amen! Two beautiful people reunited in the most beautiful place. They sure earned it! Thanks to them and people like them for all they try to do to make the world a better place. RIP for sure
Aww, I didn't know that. RIP.

The word ‘saint’ has the air of something unattainable. I think Mrs. Rogers wanted to convey that being a successfully good person is something all of us can do if we tried.
and never stopped trying
Wonderfully put! Love to all
It is strange that we've piled so many things onto that term. I suppose it probably started when saints stopped being people whose example you should follow, and started being people they sold statues of and told you to pray to this one or that one for fortune in this or that area, or bury this one in your backyard, or wear this one around your neck..

Mr. Rodgers is a lesson in how to minister. It isn't about telling people how to live. It's about living in a way that makes people ask "how can I live like that?" . I had a friend like that once, and I will never forget him. R.I.P to him , Fred , and this charming woman.
That's lovely 🧡🍀
Mr Rodgers ultimate testimony was how to love your neighbor no matter how different they were or no matter how much they ‘didn’t deserve it.’
He never brought up religion, which made it applicable to EVERYONE
@@mrmacguff1nvery precisely. He taught his faith through his actions, and I think he saw that anything good that people can do must be God's work, and therefore it needed no clarification.
It's "Rogers," not "Rodgers." Rogers.
Mr. Rogers looked out of the TV at my lonely child and asked my child to be his friend. I will love him for ever.
I remember my littlest when he was 4 talking back to the tv saying “I love you too, Mr Rogers”. So great.
They are good people. Mr. Rogers was a delightful man. Very kind.
Mrs. Rogers - what a doll! What a lady! "You won't hear a lot of religious talk - you'll hear a lot of religious values - as people say, he walked the walk". So should we all! Talk love, folks! Bless you, Mr. & Mrs. Rogers!
When a couple has been happily married for years and years, they have certain phrases or pauses in their speech that are shared. You can hear similarities in her speech that show that. What a dear lady! She is so kind and honest. What a gem!
I was thinking the same thing but couldn’t put it into words quite as well as you have above haha What an example these two are to the world how to treat one another in life 👏
I don’t hear it.
sweet lady. Wonderful she mentions Forest Gump as one of her husband's favorites. Will try to remember to think of him while watching it.
Yes, she put it perfectly; the show was his ministry. He truly ministered, in the real sense of the word, endearing himself to generations by his profound thoughtfulness. What a devoted & caring man. Love his sweet wife too. Wishing her many more years of life and good health!!
😔
Sadly Joanne Rogers passed away in 2021. Now she & Fred are together again in heaven.
Yea man great guy truly. Praise God there are people so kind like Mr. Rodgers

If he wasn’t a saint he certainly came close and IS walking among them. I’m 77 years old and did not take him seriously for a long time. When he came onto channel 2 one day at the beginning of the Iraq war I was struck hard by the expression on his face. I knew at that moment that I was in the presence of greatness because there were tears in my eyes. He taught me a great lesson that day. He was extremely humane. He achieved simplicity.
Beautiful story! Thank you for sharing Chris. Do you happen to remember the episode?
@@Aethelhadas It was a public service announcement, not an episode of his program. My name is “Christopher”.
This video a gift to all of us who love Mr Rodgers. Now we can love Mrs Rodgers, too. What a gift to this world. Love you and miss you!
No human being is perfect, but Mr Rogers was pure hearted, full of kindness, love, and acceptance. Something we could use more of.
"Fred wasn't a saint because..."
Goes on to describe exactly what it means to be a saint.
clickbait title
But here’s the thing, calling him a saint means no one can attain that. He wants people to know you can be a good person, and working at it is worth it.
Exactly
@@pixiepalasmr6881that is the wrong idea of what a saint is. A saint works the hardest of any of us.
What makes people great isn't perfection. It's doing and being the best you can in spite of not being perfect. We kids didn't need him to be perfect. Just him.
When the interviewer asks how did he make you feel loved and she answers that Fred told her and he showed her...yes words and actions together are what let's people know they are loved...not just one or the other.
@@TheSouthIsHot She probably loves you deeply but has trouble saying the words. That’s not unusual for some people. The love goes way beyond words.
What bright and beautiful eyes. Such a nice lady. Thanks for this.
The fact that he worked hard to be kind instead of just naturally being perfectly good makes him more commendable.
She's as nice as her husband.

Even his wife is a sweetheart. What good people.
I can definitely tell Joanne Rogers was a good match for Fred Rogers. She has a tough side, but is still a nice lady. Fred would have needed that in his life.
Funny, I was thinking the same thing. You can see how she would have been an excellent compliment to him. They must have been an awesome force, together!
“It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” is so iconic, and I just loved hearing him sing it when I was a kid. I always wanted the episode to stay on longer, and when he would get ready to go back out, I was like, “Nooo. . . “. Who else had that feeling?
After my father and grandfather, Mr. Rogers was the most important man in my life as a child and gave me the loving heart I have today. I could not imagine a world with Mr. Rogers.
You just made me tear up! He made a lot of future beautiful days in a lot of neighborhoods!!!
*I could not imagine a world WITHOUT Mr. Rogers.
I completely agree!
@@probablynot1368 he meant a world with mr Rogers again ( I think? )
I'm 61. As a six-year-old, I watched Mr. Rogers regularly. I liked it because I liked it. When I was in my early 20s, I was channel surfing and landed on "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood". I watched for the nostalgia, but I was seeing it through much different and considerably older eyes. I got it. Here was this soft-spoken man, telling kids that they were special. Not special to the point where they should feel they deserve extra attention, but special in their uniqueness. So many influences, so many systems in place trying to put everyone in neat little boxes so they can be more easily managed and accepted. Fred Rogers told me I could be in my own box and you can be in your own box and that was all right. Maybe one day, you could visit me in my box and I can visit you in your box, but if I didn't want visitors or to visit today, that was all right, too. I cried when Mr. Rogers passed. He was the embodiment of the word "kind".
Growing up, I never thought of him as a saint, just a humble man who brought happiness to others, a role model that kids grew up with and what they should grow up to be
Mr Rodgers wasn’t a saint he was just a person full of kindness understanding and who was a listener and a helper. ❤️
Which to me pleases God - hence that’s a saint to me💕
People say it's darker here on Earth without Mr. Rogers, but I think that's only true if you start treating your neighbors like enemies.
Agreed. It's up to us to act like Mr. Rogers now.
Im realizing that much of what is awful in the US is coming from the generation coming into their own who wasn’t really raised on mr. Rogers. I was fortunate enough to have old fashioned parents who felt he was important to watch.
@@TD-ug4mg No, the new generations have been struggling to survive thanks to the prior generations faults. We have an entire generation of kids who are environmentally aware who get shit on every day because they care and worry about things the Boomer generation took for granted.
@@WalkerRileyMC I was speaking more on a social level. There is a certain level of narcissism and a lack of empathy, which one would expect to see out of a teenager somebody in their very early twenties that is carrying into a person's mid to late thirties. I'm part of that generation I see it all around me and all over online and it's sickening. Economically and environmentally I do agree, but the social issues the cause may be up to a number of factors but I do think that a big part of it is not hearing messages or having examples such as Fred Rogers that they can strive to emulate.
Yes. There always have been people of bad will, there always will be, because God gives us Free Will and we are expected to use it. But we choose whether to treat such people as enemies or not. And amazing things can happen when people refuse to do so.
Mr. Rogers made everyone aspire to be a better person ... that was his gift to humanity.
UA-cam suggested this to me last week, and I watched it with a big smile on my face. Today, I woke up and read of her passing. We love you, Joanne! RIP.
"Did you guys ever fight?"
snort "Oh Dear..."
She had to laugh when thinking about 'fighting' with Fred!
I'm guessing she meant more along the line of argue.
My husband and I have never had a fight. When we were dating we made rules that 1. We would try not to do anything on purpose to make each other made. 2. We agreed to step away from the situation, calm down, and then we would discuss things. We never went to bed angry, we always made up in bed ;)

Fred Rogers preached the Gospel at all times. Only when necessary did he use words. His actions spoke for him. The same for Joanne, whose kindness to my brother, who had Down Syndrome, was something I will never forget. Fred and Joanne went out of their way to show love and respect to those among us whom Jesus called "the least of these." We were so blessed to have them both.
those.
i read somewhere that a thief stole his car once i have no idea what year it was but it was after the show became a hit but anyways he got his car stolen one day he came out from a taping and it wasn't there. than something funny happened the thief apparently found out who's car it was and brought it back with a note apologizing for taking it.
if that story is true it's really incredible that any thief would do that
As St. Francis was reputed to have said, "Preach the Gospel always. When necessary use words." He lived the Great Commandment and preached it by his actions. Love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself.
Years ago, I lived in Pittsburgh where I attended school. And the WNED network was just down the street, on Forbes Avenue. And I volunteered on the Mr. Rogers Neighbourhood show. The room was huge with a vast number of staff working on the program, even though the overall feeling of the space was intimate and cozy. And Mr. Rohers was always smiling, calm, collected and, above all, warm-hearted.
I grew up in The Burgh ( Pittsburgh ). I was a member of the neighborhood. I am almost 56 and Fred Roger's was my first friend. I am very thankful for that show. I got to see the set. God bless Fred Rogers.
no one calls it the Burgh.
Hi Heather! I just wanted to let you know that you did an amazing job here interviewing Mrs. Rogers. You gave her a chance to shine and to be herself. You also LISTENED to her! My! What we accomplish when we listen instead of trying to yell over each other!

Gabriel, that's what Fred did. He listened.
I think that's something most people (Probably myself included) don't do a very good job of. I think we all just want to talk and talk, get our point across. We could probably "say" a whole lot more if we just listened to each other more often.
Mr Rogers offered A Choice, a way to be nice as best he could at the time. Elated to enjoy said choice in my childhood.

Mr Rogers was a huge fan of Tom Hanks and now Tom Hanks played him in a movie. Damn thats cool.

This is the first time I've ever seen Mrs. Rogers. What a delightful lady.
I never realized how much he did for children until I watched a video analyzing him. Reading the comments almost brought me to tears. People, who are now adults commenting how amid their chaotic and/or abusive/negletive environments as kids - Mr. Rogers was for many kids the only calmness and normalty in their little worlds. God bless you Mr. Rogers. We as a society are in much trouble and need more human beings such as you were.

A Saint is a sinner that keeps on trying and considering he spent a lifetime trying to be kind to his fellow man that makes him a saint in my book
There is something profound about your statement.
This is a few years old and just seeing it now - Heather, you did an amazing job with your interview. Mrs. Rogers is a one of a kind - and an incredible pianist.
He was a modern day saint.... he touched so many children and helped us grow up to be good people. He inspired others to be a good neighbor and that is pretty saintly to me in this day and age.
Wonderful! 'He walked the walk' something for us all to learn.
I remember Mr. Rogers as a kid, the kind of nice neighbor any kid would like to have, a little help with your homework when Mom or Dad couldn't, talking about pet dogs, cats or catching bugs, and now I see that Mrs. Rogers is just as COOL as he was. :)
Mr Rogers was a huge part of my early childhood in the late 70's and early 80's. Lady Elaine still creeps the sh-t out of me to this day.
Was it really necessary to make Lady Elaine’s nose and cheeks so dark red? It always looked like dried blood to me when I was a kid.
A Saint can be a normal man that has performed 2 miracles. And Fred has performed millions of miracles for millions of children. Fred should be blessed as a Saint.
When I read this, I got chills - and tears. You're absolutely right; he has indeed performed miracles, whether or not anyone else recognizes them as such. The Roman Catholic Church would do well (not just to themselves, but to humanity) to actually consider Fred Rogers for canonization and sainthood; he would certainly be beyond embarrassed, but the example of his life and his actions deserve to be celebrated, blessed - and emulated.
My husband isn't a saint either, but he's pretty damn close. God bless you Fred Rogers!
@P Pp Somebody blessed me. If you met my husband you'd understand. He's the kindest, funniest man I've ever met, hands down. And, he's an atheist! Belief in God has nothing to do with your character.
This is the sweetest comment. I bet your husband would say the same about you.
I never thought of him as a saint. He was just a man trying to make the world a better place, and he did. A man burdened with all of mans sinful nature and temptations. While keeping those temptation at bay he still managed to help put many children on the correct path in life. Thank you Lord for Mr. Roger.
