It’s hard to be strong when you’re feeling powerless
She wonders why nobody hears her cry
The footsteps in the hallway have her terrified
Scared as she looks into his staring eyes
He crawls into her bed and she just lays there almost paralyzed
    Feeling powerless
    She feels so powerless
She close her eyes and hides under the covers
As her father tried to touch her
He took advantage of her took all her innocence from her
She tried to explain to mother but she says she don't believe it
    Nobody wanna talk about it
Cause this don't happen to good people, this don't happen to good people
    At the age of 17
She finally went to the police
Charged him for the crimes he did and finally took him off the streets
And at trial, she had to relive it all again
On the stand explaining how this man had took her life within
Abused for 9 years, he got 4 months and a bit
She got a lifelong sentence, he got a slap on the wrist
It happens all too much but too many keep it hush hush
How these kids supposed to trust us? Man, don't let em feel powerless
I'm not sad I'm strong... oh
    I won’t feel powerless
    I won’t feel powerless
    I won’t feel powerless
    Thank you to my hero
    Hope to meet you someday
Can anybody out there hear me
I hope somebody can hear me
Cause I don't wanna be here no more
    One day, one day
Cause I don't wanna be here no more
    One day, one day
    We hope
Cause I don’t wanna be here no more
Shout out where my birth place is
    And to the first nations
And to the people making the best out of the worst cases
Too many unanswered questions and open murder cases
Without a voice how we supposed to encourage changes?
My grandmother was part white and part native
In fact, my high school was part white and part native
Personally connected I met people who been affected
They been asking for some help but they been continually neglected
How many more of these indigenous women have to go missing
    Before somebody will listen, huh?
We need to change the conditions maybe it's blatant racism
Maybe there’s hate in the system
    But we gotta fix it
    Cause the people feel powerless
    And the mothers feel powerless
    And the fathers feel powerless
Like don't anybody care about my daughter
Don't anybody care if she's alive or she been slaughtered
They deserve to know so they can go and bury her with honor
Big up to those fighting on and everybody fighting strong
I wish that I could do more than just write a song
    I feel so powerless
    I feel so powerless
    I'm not sad I'm strong
It’s hard to be strong but don’t feel powerless
    Don’t feel powerless
    Don’t feel powerless
    No, speak up
Thank you to my hero, hope to meet you someday
Can anybody out there hear me?
I hope somebody can hear me
Cause I don’t want to be here no more
    One day, one day
Cause I don’t want to be here no more
    One day, one day
(For some people, all they have is hope
    Hopefully one day)
Cause I don’t want to be here no more
There’s a lot of things we don’t like talking about it
And we know we should be talking about it
This happens a lot more than what we think it does
Don’t let it make you feel powerless
    One day, one day
    One day, one day

I had to pull my car over and watch this video. I almost cried. This is what opens the eyes of the millions of people who chose to disregard the trauma and oppression that native people and native women have faces for centuries. Thank you for doing this. And to see my own Mikmaq people being represented... I'm speechless

Lucas what? Aboriginal people are 4% if the population and get HALF the funding. The issue is they just get drunk and have kids and then can't support the huge families they make. My daughter would NEVER go missing. But maybe when you have 7 of them and you're busy getting drunk while fishing that's a norm. It's not the oppressive white man, fuck that shit. They get free education, tax exempt and have guaranteed spots in medical school

I was explaining how deeply he has helped me as well as millions of other people, across all races, sexes, religions, paygrades or power. His music is real. It's not made for the masses to make money. He puts music out to hopefully. Maybe connect and make a difference in someone's life. Or maybe even save one. ....

Respect!!! Props to the musicians like Gord Downie and Classified for bringing up a true problem in Canada. The government has forced native communities into seclusion where the kids have no roll models. The woman have no rights. And the government has done a great job hiding and ignoring this issues. Most canadians take pride in being Canadian and what we stand for. Not even realizing our history has been made by the oppression over the very culture that began this country. We as a country and the government need to finally wake up and bring life back to the communities and culture that began the country we are supposed to be so proud of

@@jimmyb9567 i am plains cree. I've had many of my elders put through the ringer for the Canadian governments benefits. I've also spent some time in Northern Cree reservations if you can call them that. Yes natives do have rights for sure. But a lot of the reservations feel forgotten. Yes they can act upon some of the rights. But most they can't because they have nothing up there. Even some deal with corruption of there own band council and can't do anything about it.

It doesn't deserve more attention it's full misconceptions and lies. Most pedophila is enjoyed in secret and the only cases you hear about are when it wasn't enjoyed and forced. Cherry picked evidence shouldn't have changed the laws, yet here we are with Hypocrites grooming kids to be gay or sexually repressed incells.

My grandma was in residential schools most of her childhood and was in a hospital in edmonton forced to lay in a bed for two years. We have intergenerational trauma from her being the matriarch of our family but we loved her so much. She died this year. These next few years the matriarch of so many ppls families will pass and the magic and power and information they held will go with them

To everyone who feels powerless right now, I love you, and I feel that way too. We're gonna make it. We're gonna make life better- maybe not all at once, maybe bit by bit... but I promise, we got this. Even if neither of us can see it right now. Typing this with tears streaming down my cheeks, because of how fatigued and done I feel with life at the moment. This will pass though, for me and for you. Tomorrow is going to be a better day, please believe that. Love all around. Meegwetch my brothers and sisters.

Your song means a lot to me & a lot of people feeling like this issue is being ignored, so many worried families & mothers are left feeling unheard. This is more meaningful than you can imagine even if you feel like a song doesn’t do much; it means the world to many. Don’t ever stop making music with meaning. 💖

I'm so sorry for the damage done. No matter the color of anyone's skin, nor there ancestoral heritage or background. I mean it matters but NO human should have to go through what you and many others have suffered. Skin is skin and we all bleed the same. I am white and will never experience the bs you all go through day to day but know that "whites" and white people are not the enemy. Good and evil comes in all shapes, sizes and colors unfortunately. But to be dismissed by the very people who are paid to serve and protect you probably feels worse than a kick in the teeth. Canada has this bright shiny image around the world of how accepting and inclusive we are as a nation. I use to believe it and wish it were true. It's not 😔. We have sooooo far to go. I'll never make sense of all of it. I mean I do make sense of it and it's disgusting and embarrassing. We all need to do better . We all know this. We've all known for too long. Politicians make heart felt speeches on the topic while doing nothing to follow through just to collect votes. It's disgusting. Human to human know that a part of me loves you. You and every other living thing on this planet. You did not deserve what happened to you. Although it's a part of who you are PLEASE DO NOT let them win. Do NOT let it define you. You are sooo much more. Do NOT let the monsters win. Still LOVE. Still HELP. Still TRUST. The majority of us here are still good. Reach out...we're all right here👊❤
