- This is an overview of the evolution of the global computer industry, decade by decade, starting in the 1940s, up to the present. A particular case study, UNIX, is used to show how important UNIX was to facilitate the underlying hardware economies of scale as the number of transistors doubled roughly every two years while the power dissipated per unit area stayed the same, resulting in hundreds of billions of transistors in a single integrated circuit today, running a variant of UNIX software.
