  • I'll show you how I replaced the convertible top on my 99' Porsche 986. This was the first time I've done a convertible top, so it took about eleven hours total, six hours the first day, five the next. I had to break the video into 2 parts. If I had to do it again it would go much faster. You will need a tube of 3M super black weatherstrip adhesive and 3M super trim spray adhesive.

Thanks for your hard work creating this video. Bought my new sierra top back in November and finally tackled the project today on my 2000 Boxster S and completed in about 10 Hrs. Your video made it possible for me to replace the top with confidence. My wife helped me with it and I can definitely attest to the benefit of having two people with this. The top fits perfectly and lays totally flat. Very satisfying and rewarding job.

Wow thanks! Looks like a lot of work and sore hands but I need a new top. It looks very well made and the video explains a whole lot.

You're welcome. If you decide to try it, get all your supplies ready ahead of time, then dedicate two days to the project and just be patient.

Jason, I found it utterly impossible to put my new top into the two slide holders behind each door area. One slides vertically and the other front to back. I found an alternate on Pelican Parts in which the plastic slider parts are popped out. Of course they both broke, but I bought new ones for under $20 each, slid on the top and then popped the parts back in. Much easier.

That's a great tip. I'm glad you found an easier way. I remember my passenger side was almost impossible, then when I was filming the drivers side I was dreading having to do it again, but for some reason it was much easier on that side.
I hope it all worked out for you. Thanks for watching.

I am in the process and removing the “sliders” is the way to go. Bought the parts from prior research and now I know why. I also am gluing the sheet metal pieces to with the top off as my instructions suggest. Thanks Jason, really helped me out.

And forgot to mention, after removing the plastic rivets : pins holding the slider plastic pieces, use an 8mm socket to release the connectors from the rear. There is also a T25 screw on the bottom of the lower bracket. The Pelican write up is worth a look but nothing beats a video!

Thank You. I know it's a lot, but when I was finished with the top I had almost 3 hours of videos to edit through! I tried to eliminate everything that was unnecessary to get the 2 videos as close to 30 min. as possible. The third was just a review and adjusting the tension.
Good luck, and trust me, if you DON'T try to make a video, it will be a lot less stressful (and less work).😁

Jason: Did you reach a conclusion about fixing the gap that resulted when closing the top. I have the same issue after professional installation. I was informed the top will stretch once there are a few 80 degree days on it. Thanks for the video.

I adjusted the top 2 or 3 times and got it within an inch. I still have to use my left hand to pull it forward while my right hand does the latch. At first it really bothered me, but now I don't even think about it.
A new problem I'm having is on hot days when it's been in the sun and I open the top, the latch hook hits the lexan between the roll bars and causes the latch handle to point straight down, then the top won't compress fully and the clam shell won't close completely. I have to reach over my head and pull the slightest bit on the lexan while the latch hook goes past to prevent it from hitting. It doesn't happen on cooler days. I worry that I have the top just a little too tight, but I don't want to lessen it and make that gap bigger when it closes.
I need to make a video about all the different little quirky things I've discovered about this car. It might help others to know if their problems are normal or not.

I'm not sure exactly where your top is loose. But follow along with the video, specifically for the problem area. When you have your specific plastic piece removed, tuck the roof material in (it might need some adhesive), then replace the plastic pieces to hold it in place. Pay close attention to the section of video where I attach the new roof in your problem area. There may be a special clamp or maybe a screw didn't go through a hole in the canvas, or something. Don't worry, I'm sure you can figure it out.

Around 22 minutes in, once you got that small short section of piping put in (horizontal) what did you do with that flat flap?? And thanks for the video, I'm just at the point of securing the canvas to the rear lower bow.

if I'm understanding what you're referring to, it just hangs down. It's down at the bottom of the canvas top and won't be seen when the top is up or down. I hope this answered your question. Good luck with your project and thanks for watching.

Did you swap a plastic window top for a glass window top?
I'm trying to find a video that shows that, without scrolling around the whole video to find out what happened. I wish your title was clear about that.
More specifically, I'm trying to quickly find out if I can swap out a plastic window for a glass window without replacing the entire top fabric. My top happens to be in great condition, the only problem being that my plastic window cracked when I did the chop on a 55°F day. Any thoughts on that?
    Thanks!

    • @jasonsporschechannel945
      @jasonsporschechannel945  3 роки тому

Yes, the new top has a glass window. You probably can not swap just the plastic for glass, because the plastic folds in half when you let the top down (glass won't fold). The glass window is smaller so that the top can fold. I have a follow up video from a couple of months after I installed the new top (how to replace a convertible top on a 986 pt.3). I review issues that I've had with the new top, including the fact that with a glass top you loose some of your access to the top of the engine.
Also, I don't think there is anyway to replace the window without removing the top. The top would have to be put on an industrial sowing machine and the plastic sown in.
I don't know why your window cracked, except that UV makes the plastic brittle over time. The plastic on my original roof was very yellow and I put my hand trough it while trying to clean it.
      Good Luck

I’m going to replace my hood next weekend so thank you for the videos.
My hood is coming from a British supplier with no instructions but I’m guessing it will be exactly the same as the Sierra one you fitted.
Is there a place to get the pdf instruction as I’m guessing Sierra won’t supply me with that?

    • @jasonsporschechannel945
      @jasonsporschechannel945  Рік тому

could it be the pressure release valve located next to the oil fill cap (and under the black cover) you might have a lot of air trapped in the system that is venting out, or you might have a faulty pressure release valve. Or is the hissing sound coming from the convertible top?

      you mean bleeder valve?
i opened it(clip vertical position). it was in vain.
Lack of coolant also might cause hissing sound?
i don't have any alarms on dashboard.
but i will refill a little coolant.
If you let me know your email, i want share short movie what its hissing sounds like.

I ordered mine off Amazon. It's a Sierra Auto Top, it's was sold through Amazon by Auto Tops Direct. I got one with a glass rear window because I thought it would be better, but discovered later that it restricts your access to the top of the engine (watch my 3rd video about the convertible top to see what I mean), If I ever do another one I will probably get one with a plastic window. Good Luck and take your time with it.

How much does such a roof cost?

    • @jasonsporschechannel945

At the time I paid about $550.00, and probably about another $15.00 for spray adhesive and tape.
