  • After high school, I went to Memphis to attend college. Two years full time, then two years part time. Then it was back home to Birmingham to finish my undergraduate degree at a place called Birmingham-Southern College. It was a good school and I had a great teacher who taught me the value of mindful practice. During this time, I also met my future wife, so it’s safe to say I was in a good place, geographically and emotionally. One evening, Monica and I were getting ready to go on a movie or dinner date, when I suddenly realized that there was a section of the Chopin Scherzo that I needed to memorize before my lesson the next day (the descending arpeggio part). My teacher had taught me to memorize by repeating the right hand 30-40 times, then the left, then both together. This was time consuming but effective. I told Monica what I needed to do and she brightly said “ok I’ll help you!!” So she sat next to me in the practice room for the better part of an hour putting tick marks in my practice notebook as I repeated 8 bar phrases over and over again. I realized if she was willing to endure that for me, she was in it for the long haul. 33 years and two kids later, we’re still going strong.
