John Goodwin: Leap Year
Leap Year is the title track from my album of original piano solos, which I wrote and recorded during lockdown in 2020 (which was, if you remember, a leap year). It is almost completely improvised, except for the main tune which you hear at the beginning, middle, and end, making each performance unique. This was the last piece on my recital in September, 2024, and with its final unresolved chord, signifies that my musical journey is still in progress. There’s much more music to be made, and I hope you’ll stick with me, wherever the journey leads. Thanks for listening.

When I decided to record an album of original material during the 2020 lockdown, I purposely wanted it to be “Liz Story-esque”, since her music has been an inspiration to me over the years. A New Age (apparently called Classical Crossover these days) album that would be calming but also reward listeners who wanted to pay closer attention. Most of the pieces have a harmonic framework, with space...

The year was 1986, the summer of my 21st birthday. I found myself in a little town in Vermont as the pianist for a summer ballet camp. I had never been that far north, and the green mountains were a new experience for me. Everywhere I looked was like a post card. One day, I and a few friends went into town for supplies, and in the drug store I spied a huge bin of cassette tapes. Always looking ...

This one is from my original four notebooks. It’s often mistaken for a folk song, and was set by both Charles Ives in 1916 and Aaron Copland in 1952. It was written in 1864 by Rev. Robert Lowry, and it feels so much like a folk song that I can understand why people would think it is. I chose to end my Walbert set with this one because first, it’s beautiful, and second, it incorporates all the t...
I Can Tell You the Time, arranged by James D. Walbert

During my time as a student of Mr. Walbert, I filled four big manuscript books with his arrangements (he would give me photocopies from his file cabinets and my mother and I would glue the pages into the book). This was in the 70s, and I still have them and treasure them. Of course, I thought that those four notebooks would be the extent of my collection, and they were, until I started putting ...

James D. Walbert of Birmingham, Alabama, was my piano teacher in the mid 70s, when I was between 3rd and 6th grades. He moved me beyond the five-finger pieces and exercises that my previous teacher had been giving me since first grade. He introduced me to octave-chord left hand techniques and fat 4-note chords in the right hand, both of which helped stretch my little hands and prepare me for th...

This is by far the most recent addition to my repertoire. In late April of 2024, I was looking for a piece to round out the set of popular piano pieces for this recital, and I had in mind James P. Johnson’s Caprice Rag, which I had on a record as a kid, but I couldn’t find the right arrangement in the right key…I couldn’t even find the original recording I had heard back then. But, as I was sea...

I first encountered the music of British popular pianist and composer Billy Mayerl in the mid 90s when I was a collaborative pianist at the Steans Institute Program for Singers at the Ravinia Festival. Those six summers were filled with Art Song, camaraderie, and laughter. The head of the program was a British pianist, composer, academic, and broadcaster named David Owen Norris. David and I hit...

Scott Joplin and I go way back to my elementary school days. In December of 1973 a hit movie call The Sting was released, which featured a soundtrack consisting of arrangements of Scott Joplin’s music. This sent the country into a Joplin frenzy, and people couldn’t get enough of it…none more so than my fellow classmates at Gardendale Elementary School. They knew I played piano, so they kept ask...

After high school, I went to Memphis to attend college. Two years full time, then two years part time. Then it was back home to Birmingham to finish my undergraduate degree at a place called Birmingham-Southern College. This is a more recent addition to my repertoire. Since I have fewer solo opportunities these days, part of my daily routine is to practice pieces that get my fingers moving, and keep my technique in shape in a way only solo repertoire can, even if I’m not going to perform them. I learned this piece during lockdown, and I am glad to be able to finally present it to you. It is a stormy piece, per...

I first heard this when I was a teenager. I had a vinyl album of the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 with Gary Graffman, Bernstein, and the NY Phil. The concerto wasn’t quite long enough for a whole album, so there were three “filler”tracks added on…Graffman playing three Rachmaninoff Preludes. I loved them all, but this was my favorite. I immediately asked my teacher, Mr. Schutt, if I could ...

This is really nicely done. The tempo is not too fast which gives it a very salon vibe unlike what many other players do - you also have a really graceful touch and really pleasant to listen. I also like the ritard before the final section which only a few players have really done. Hopefully you post more Moszkowski and Kapustin content in the future!
