Do card making videos really make it look easier than it is? Let's do an experiment together!

  • Do you want to know what I sometimes think when I watch videos of people creating cards? I think it looks so easy what they are doing, yet at the same time so ingeniously brilliant, that it must have been really difficult to achieve and that it only looks so simple because the video is edited on UA-cam. So today, let's start an experiment together to get to the bottom of this question!

I find your videos amazing! I'm not always looking to find an "easy way" of doing something, but rather I'm looking for the "steps" that are used to build different design techniques. I appreciate the fact that you are willing to take the RISK of experimenting for us ("what if I tear a hole and emboss words thru to the lower layer?") and we can see the REWARD of the final outcome! I'm not a big risk taker in general, so if you wouldn't mind...could you color the tips of your hair with Forest Moss so I can see if I want to take the same risk?! Just kidding!! 😆🤣 I can see why you were a teacher in your past...your natural talent shines thru! Thanks for sharing!!

You have the knack, Luise, for making all your cards easy for me. I love the idea of stamping the large floral into oxide sprays and also gold embossing powder. I saw your cards on Tim’s live and thought that the torn area around the wording was brilliant. I will be using these techniques on some of my holiday cards, while I wait for the holographic paper to arrive in September. I think these cards are lovely and different. I’m so glad, you “thunk” to do these cards this way. You always have surprises for us, no matter what you are making. Thanks, Luise.

Luise, you have done such a great job of making your viewership feel like a real community by the way you speak to us and share your creative life and process. Of course, I watch your videos in order to learn techniques and gain insight into your thinking about your art. But the makers I enjoy the most are the ones who are able to create community. That is equally important to me. And the fact that your community is international makes it even more gratifying. It is important to bring people together in positive ways, especially in these very divisive times. I don’t know if you knew you were doing that, but I experience that as an important byproduct of your work. Thank you so much.❤

Keep taking those next steps! In my eyes, your end result is much more creative, unusual and unexpected than placing the sentiment stamped on a slip of paper and attached on top. When I saw your cards on the Tim Holtz live, I wondered how the heck you were able to manage the positioning so perfectly but watching you create the card on your tutorial, you show that the process was actually quite easy. Thank you for sharing and taking the chance that your card may have been ruined. This has taught me that the risk is well worth the outcome! You’re awesome! ❤

Creating something often results in a series of mistakes, that pushes you harder to overcome the things you do not like, by being inventive and instead you finish with something totally spontaneous which even leaves you dumbfounded about how you got there. The stubbornness to succeed and to not give up or waste paper is definitely a motivator. Great job Luise.

I started as a card maker and I still make them for friends and family. I have used many of your ideas in journals and cards. I was impressed with these cards when Tim showed them on his video. Thank you for the tutorial. The main lesson is don’t stop when the process isn’t what you thought press on. God is the creator not the devil ,the Devil is the destroyer. Blessings from Canada 🇨🇦

When I saw these cards on Tim's Livestream, I immediately added a note to my technique list, along with a simple drawing, because the torn window appearance is so beautiful in my eyes.
I even have that same cardstock, but I had no idea it could do such magical things....obviously it depends on the skill and experience of the maker.
Thank you for posting a tutorial because I would NEVER be able to recreate your process on my own.
The final results look so Old World-ish to me. It's like sitting in a vintage parlor with faded upholstery and wallpaper.
    Absolute perfection.❤

Luise... I think the "devil" is the one that keeps us in a box, full of doubt, by saying, "NO! Be afraid. Just leave it as it is... It's enough."
And the "angel" is the one that says, "Enjoy the journey... express yourself! Spread your wings and fly." 😉
All of the cards are gorgeous either way. 🤩 And fairly "easy". Totally doable!. Even without having everything you have, I can create something just as beautiful with what I have in my own supplies.
I just need to use MY brain.😁
    Thank you!💗💗💗

Beautiful cards. As a card maker, the techniques are easy, it's the coming up with the design and composition that can make it seem difficult. Card making can be very time consuming especially when you start combining techniques. As with all arts and crafts it depends on how far you want to take it as to how much time you spend. Thanks for showing us the techniques you used, I love the combination of the stamping and the embossing.

I have half an hour from time to time, and I'm not so creative. Even though, I see all your (English) videos and love them.
By the way, I'm crafting my second junk journal, thanks to your videos and Barbara's. Hugs from Argentina

Hi Luise, I found your channel from 49DragonFlies. I love that she is sharing your techniques with making your beautiful cards! I absolutely love the colors and how you used scissors on the edges. I think that added to the overall creation of the card!🤩LOL on the little devils on your shoulders! That made me smile! I think these little devils just wanna help create! 🤣I am glad I found you and I am a new subscriber. Ilook forward to watching more of your videos. 😍Happy Crafting! Gina

Love this idea. I added it to the journal I am working on. I saw your cards on the Tim H. video and wondered how you did it. Very easy!

Hi Luise, your cards came out to be amazing! I appreciate all the steps you take to show us how to do some of the same things you do! Homework pt. 1: this didn't look super easy but i imagine with your video to go by, I could probably do this. But, I cannot try it because I don't have all the products that you used. I might try and come up with a version using what I have and see how it goes. Thanks for going to all that trouble for us! Have a great week! TFS 😊

Luise, these are simply stunning! When I saw them on the live I (as usual) thought how did she do that? How did she get that color on the stamped image!?!?? Of course you explain your steps so well so thank you for that and I love that you always share your thought process with us. I learn so much from that and I am always encouraged to try new things. WWLD (what would Luise do)🤪😉❤

I said I would give it a try, and I did. My first mixed media card. I didn’t like it when I got started, but I stayed with the process. It isn’t too bad (sympathy card), and my sweet friend knows it’s handmade. Following your technique was easy. Having the skills - I need more practice! Much more. But I enjoyed the process. Thanks you!

Aww ❤️ thank you so much for trying it out! Sounds like you had fun and I love to hear that you liked it. And I also find that it's very important that one can see that something is handmade

I love your videos. When I say "you make it look so easy", I mean crafting comes so naturally to you. That's how, or why, you can make it look easy. It's your talent, not your processes. You have YEARS of experience and so much natural talent - creating is your gift, your calling, your purpose. THATS why you are able to make it "look easy". I personally would LOVE to be able to make these cards, but I end up limiting myself by telling myself, "I don't have Tim Holtz stamps. I dont have Tim Holtz paper. I don't have embossing powder. I don't have Tim Holtz stencils." And those thoughts frustrate me. So I grab what I do have, which is regular copy paper, flimsy cheap stencils......Anyway, I end up having to work harder and i end up having something that looks like exactly what it was made with - cheap. So, I think, and this is just my opinion, but I think "easy" requires talent, experience, and proper supplies. I'm not mad that you make it look easy, not at all. I'm envious. That's why I watch your videos over and over. I just want to learn from you so that one day someone can tell me that I make it look easy. 😁 I do love that you always explain your thought process. I think that is super helpful. You are an amazing, gifted artist and you make really great youtube videos. So thank you for that. 🙏🏻💝 I can't imagine the time it takes to make every video in two different languages. 🫂

Even if my takeaway is just one of these tips, I’m a better artist for it. Thank you!
