Crystal radio technology has been around for many years. This "bottle radio" take on a crystal radio requires no power source, operates on the power from radio waves, and receives signal from a long wire antenna. As radio stations slowly move away from the AM band, the "window of opportunity" to experience this remarkable technology is dwindling. The "crystal" in question is contained inside a germanium diode, and is used to rectify the radio signal so that our ears can hear it.

My grandpa did one in Poland during WWII to listen to London Radio. It was extremely dangerous: if Germans had found the radio, he would have been killed in place.

Note: A lot of coat hangers are coated in varnish/enamel of some sort. You may need to sand it off where it contacts the screw, and the coil.

I didn't think that crystal ear phone was still around, the first radio I made was a foxhole radio 55 years ago

I built one of those before but it came in a kit that I bought from radio shack. It actually worked to even though my dad told me it can be hard to get these things to work on the first try.

Woo amateur radio enthusiasts!! I've always loved simple foxhole/cats-whisker's radios, it's amazing how they work.

that radioshack mini amp is great for making dyi ipod speakers, only issue is the speaker in it is crap and gets impossible to hear after you turn the volume just a little bit

You guys made this a little costly. We use to use parts and wire scrounged from old electronics and a oatmeal box (also known as a mush box) instead of a bottle. It would be cheaper to by a store bought kit then buy the materials for yours.

I love these! I remember as kid on the bps show "zoom" where they had a demo of one made with two tin cans that fit indie of each other. you would rotate the tow cylinders to change station. I would love to see that on here? Anyone? :) Thanks!

So you know, saying 'You will also need' and then just showing the materials and their names feels awkward. next time, just read them off quickly and let the image sit for a second after you are done reading. Otherwise, very cool video!
