Here's something wild: A cooking tip! ;-) If you pan-fry something of which you're not sure if it's too thick and it may end half-cooked in the middle, just pop a lid over the pan - anything that stops the hot air from inside of the pan escaping will do (pot lids and ikea-plates are tested here, though for the latter you'll want gloves). That way you get a kind of oven-effect and your pancake would have been properly done for sure.
Top tip for the classic beans on toast, chop a fresh tomato and add to beans before heating, this improves flavour by 100%. Try it you will be surprised.
Just an FYI: most American homes and ANY American restaurant with pancakes on the menu would have served butter to spread on them first before pouring the syrup.
The pancake batter should be lumpy. If you stirred it so much that it's smooth, the resulting pancake will be tough. Also, the traditional way of determining the proper temperature of the griddle is to sprinkle water on the surface - water should sizzle and roll around on the surface.
Great vlog, thank you for taking us along! If you'll accept a couple pancake tips from an American, yes thin your batter, and use less oil. In a non-stick pan, or properly seasoned cast iron, if you drizzle some oil in and then wipe it out gently with a paper towel, what's left is plenty, and makes for much more even browning of the pancake. When you need more oil, just re-wipe the pan with your oiled paper towel.
David, youmay (or may not) recall from the Canal Boating channel that I am an ex-pat Brit now living in Texas. My wife and I have this summer just finished restoring a 1995 Starcraft popup camper. She is off at her ladies clubs events (is a member of a ladies only camper group called "sisters on the fly") so your remark about anything bigger than a van being huge, rings very true for me. One of those Motor Coach homes (we call them Class "A" coaches) will do nicely for me but at $150,000+ and up to the sky is the limit for one new, are a bit on the expensive side for me.
As an American, let me say that you can get pancakes of all descriptions here. I'd have thinned those out a great deal (not quite a crèpe but at least half of what you showed us). For one thing, it makes for a more golden pancake because it bubbles much sooner. Another tip: add a bit of cinnamon to almost any boxed/bagged mix to freshen the taste! I enjoyed the show. Thank you!
A mighty big thank you from my husband Alwyn...it's Pancake Day and I would have forgotten if not for showing this. You were very tidy making yours btw which I guess created a saving on the water for washing up...very clever. Some of those vehicles were ridiculously big. Very interesting to see what others have done with their space.
You did fine on the pancake. 😍 Loved seeing the diverse range of campers. It’s such a popular thing these days. Here in America they are everywhere. Looks like the same there.
Love your van videos, because they always remind me just how awful living in a van is😂 I have a day van, which is great for the odd picnic, but there are plenty of restaurants and hotels for the living bit😉
What a great event! Wish I’d been there. Thanks for the look around. Despite the huge area and number of campers, you did a good job of giving us a feel for the event. Happy Trails
I do enjoy your approach to these vlogs. Love seeing you trying to be calm when it looks like the pancake was looking like it might be heading unceremoniously to the door.
You need a chef old chap, before you succumb to malnutrition! Well done though, first try at a pancake. Great post as usual, loved the smoke alarm mitigation. Cheers.
Nice vlog David. That looked like a lot of ground to cover. For your pancakes, add three tablespoons or soup spoons of dark ale to the mix. It will give you a bit thinner mix which will spread thinner in the pan and add a sponge cake texture to the cake. The dark ale adds a bit of caramel flavor. Have a great week.
More water makes thinner pancakes. Looks like an excellent show, with lots of variety. Those roof top tents certainly keep the crocodiles and most of the snakes out. Thanks for the video David.
Excellent roundup. Shame the pancake not up to your usual standard. Very impressed with the sheer variety and number of different vans. The show seems mandatory for any camper van enthusiast
David, that was a truly, delightful video, thanks. You had me at " Michelin starred sausage roll and beans" cooked in a ridge monkey , sounds perfect. 😆😂.
A very nice experience, not glutted with crowds of people. Previous to this, the only thing I knew about Brit camping was as presented by Clarkson, May and Hammond. Americans are not concerned about the taste or texture of pancakes, but rather the size of the hotcakes. Supersize 'em, thank you.
Bagsen: I had a stack of pancakes when I was in Maryland US, smothered with sickly syrup, I thought they were pretty disgusting, and my American friend could not believe I didn't like them !!
Thanks for the invite to see what you saw and also enjoying your culinary expertise as if we were actually there. That small skillet was indeed small and usually the first pancake is thrown away or given to the dog since it isn't at it's best...but you ate it! Always a pleasure to hear from you and look forward to more!
Your foray into making American-style pancakes proved to be the most riveting part of the outing, at least in my mind. YES, your pancake looked EXACTLY as high as it should be. Late in life, I learned that pancakes are baked more than pan-fried. Lower heat and longer stovetop time work a treat. If you really want a crepe to roll up with some filling, thinner mix (and maybe even a different batter recipe) will be needed. Americans often put a pat of good butter on the hot cake along with the syrup. I sometimes coarsely grate a raw apple into the batter for easing my conscience by adding nutrition.😊
Love seeing the variety and creativity of the camper vans in the UK. It's a market that really lags behind in the US. We mainly see the much larger RVs or large trailers towed behind pickup trucks.
Good to see you are well, David. And your pancake came out fairly well. I must confess I spent a few moments criticizing your lack of patience. After all they were American pancakes.
David I think you as a teller of tales is much more your style then just traversing the British Canal system. I am not saying those excursions and the assorted commentary was not good but your new focus seems to be more to your liking. I finally jumped into the 21st century and soon will be following you on Instagram. My ancient analog 1 g phone bit the dust and I have upgraded to a digital version.
In the US the Campers are classed A, B, and C Class A is that large Coach with the slide-outs, they run upwards from $200,000 (there is a TV show about just those sort of vehicles built for Musicians and retired millionaires who get seasick.) Class B is like yours; a van fitted out as a camper. Class C is a Cab and Chassis, with what you would call a caravan fitted to the frame to make a single vehicle. (it sounds awful but it makes for a roomy camper and maintains a good maneuverability)
Lovely David thankyou. Bit more practice on the pancakes i think. I did like the look of the good sized Sausage roll with beans, very nice. Best wishes
interesting vans and luncheon. i am guessing you shudder at the thought of instant mash, but idahoan is definitely good and would make for a valuable addition to the sausage roll/beans combo. cheers for the vid!
I loved the unique ones, some real passion put into not only the interior but the exterior as well. If only I had a C licence to drive something a little bigger.
Hi David. I loved the title of this video. I am a guitarist, and ardent Stratocaster player. Love all your videos, on this channel and the boat channel. One day we will get to England and perhaps find where you are. Love to meet you sometime.
Another interesting video, David. I had to smile at the wording on the front of the converted horsebox at 2:27 in. My sense of Humour. 😅 PS. It was good to meet you, albeit only briefly, at the Stratford show 🙂 (You got a bit concerned when I popped by your camper to say how disappointed I was in your video in which you had promised we would fall asleep watching as it was so boring and I never did 😒 fortunately you did get the dry humour we English seem to have ☺). Love both channels 😃
A fantastic variety of RVs Dave. I didnt see any sports RVs though. What are they you may ask....? Ours is a transit diesel with very light components...foam instead of wood. great mileage and easily passes BMWs and Porsches....Ok may be not many of those but it isnt in the way on the highway like a lot of other RVs. our diesel heater noise issue has been minimized with a queen size mattress between it and us...still working on the 'foam board' housing for it though as it is still slightly audible.
Pancakes looked awesome adding 1egg really help texture and a pinch of salt helps some would add just bit of sugar too!!! Also put a pat of butter on the flapjack befote you pour the syrup on!Sausage roll and beans fine cuisine..fit for royalty..The bus was nice but missing all the flowers and peace signs that I remember..🌷💐💮🌸🏵🌺🇺🇸🚒✌Thanks David..
Nice 1 David, Some nice campervan and stuff there. One of the best things I've seen, an the person musta been a Star trek Original Series fan, Its a Landrover Jim but not as you know it, although thats in the song too. Thanks m8, I enjoyed that, you and yours stay safe and well.
There was due to be 50+ American RVs to look around but the organisers decided to cancel them just a week or 2 before the event…….. I was thinking my self-built Lithium battery system in my RV may have been of interest but clearly the organisers knew best……..
David: After all these years on your narrowboat, I find it hard to believe you can't make Michelin - Three Star meals in 2021 from scratch from your boat or campervan. 🤓. Are you resisting your inner Jaime Oliver?

The first pancake is the test pancake. It gives you an idea whether the heat or mix needs to be adjusted.
Looks like a fun time. You kill me with your “bachelor” cooking skills lol…
You make everything interesting, even eating breakfast. Always my favorite guy.
Verily, it has to be said: Proper vantastic. Thanks David

That sausage roll looks amazing. Wish we had those in the US.
those freebie shower caps which are left in the hotel bathroom are perfect for covering over a smoke detector for those smokey toasty times.
xx
For American style pancakes, you may want to use a larger pan, lower heat, and for best results.....have an American make them for you....LOL :-)
Yeah, I only have that small pan in the van

I recommend melting butter before adding the syrup. Makes any style pancake better. 🤪

For anyone watching from outside the UK. 30 seconds *is not* all you need for a nice cuppa. 2 mins minimum. #TeaTips.
I assure you it’s not, provided the water is boiling and the teabag stirred well.
I think it depends very much on the type of tea that you use.
