The Tsakonians are Greeks who live in Tsakonia and speak Tsakonian Greek, a Hellenic language that descends from the Doric dialect and it's highly divergent from modern Greek and its dialects which descend from Koine Greek.
Tsakonians live in eastern Peloponnese and they descend from populations of Laconia that had to flee to the Parnon mountain so as to save themselves from the Avar-Slavic invasions in the end of the 6th century.
The name "Tsakonian" means the one who lives outside of Laconia.
Tsakonians took part in the Greek Revolution of 1821 and as a result their most important village, Kastanitsa, was destroyed by the army of Ibrahim pasha of Egypt in 1826.
The song is about Tsakonians and other Greeks going to Dervenakia to fight Mahmud Dramali pasha's army which led to a decisive Greek victory and the destruction of Dramali's army.
Elona mentioned in the song is a monastery on Parnon mountain.
