      I retook it and got 121. I am scheduled to retake it this October. I have talked to an older Black-American gentleman who told me that it took him 3 times to take the test before he finally passes and was accepted. I'll never give up, I'll keep on trying until I get work for the State Department.

    This was a great documentary. I liked the candor of the FSOs regarding what they thought State could improve on. I also liked that you had many different perspectives: FSOs, ambassadors, assistant secretaries, SFSOs, etc. Thanks for airing this!

      any degree is fine, but the test is extremely hard, since a lot of questions is basically about opinions you would do. for example, you are in Afghanistan US embassy, and you notice that the water is not clean in the nearby town and schools are underfunded, what suggestion will make to the US ambassador? something like that.

    they are not doing enough, there is a reason why less and less African Americans are in the FS. AA typically have fewer means of family/financial support. They apply to these scholarships because they have no other means of attending school and applying to the FS. If less and less AA are getting selected for fellowships, there will be less AA in the FS and less representation. In conclusion, more scholarships need to be offered to at least let those who don't have the means to apply by themselves.

    In the quest to learn something about diversity at the State Department, I was eager to see this promotional video that clearly aims to profile diversity in the workforce of America's State Department. The video does a good job of profiling various jobs, however I think it stops short of accurately representing diversity in the State Department. With more than 20 million America veterans, many of whom have served on the frontlines in America's military services, I was disappointed that not a single military veteran was featured or even mentioned in this promotional video about diversity in the State Department. By highlighting women, ethnic minorities, and LGBT+ individuals while ignoring those with veteran status, the video implies that the manifestations of diversity such as sex, ethnicity, and sexual orientation are important to the State Department whereas veteran status is not. Coming from the department which is tasked with representing America to foreign nations, ignoring its veterans is a travesty. There are more than 20 million American veterans today, many of whom make careers in public service. Given the many levels of approval required to produce a 25-minute promotional video, the State Department should consider why no one on the approval team thought to feature veterans in a video intended to highlight organizational diversity. The public should be informed that many secretaries of state were veterans and that veterans serve with distinction at all levels in the State Department.

    • @johnvines4875
      @johnvines4875 6 років тому +1

      Agreed, us veterans only matter in few fields ( police / fire department ) maybe shitty jobs like security ($9 an hour)
      CIA,FBI, most police departments, NSA, DOS, DOJ and other, don't give 2 shits about your military history or status, but want you to pass the test or at least have a 3.5 + GPS bachelors

  • @RonsWorld5

    This is NOT true. The State Department is NOT in search of diversity. It is in search of selecting individuals for assignment to overseas posts who will promote one segment of America: The White segment. The State Department has not and still is not aggressively seeking or recruiting African Americans into the Foreign Service ranks. I was in the Foreign Service (FSO) and served at two overseas posts; one in Asia and the other in Africa. My appointments amounted to nothing but "tokenism." That is, to say, "Look, we have Blacks in the Foreign Service." What I have learned (and this is easily verifiable) most U.S. Ambassadors are White males and a few White women. I challenge anyone to list the number of African Americans serving as US Ambassadors and stack that number up against the number of Whites who are in those positions. And, in particular, in Africa. I knew one African American Ambassador in Africa. It is most telling and shameful. I find this very odd on the continent of Africa. Why is that? Why are White males and a few White women predominate US Ambassadorships IN AFRICA (and even Asia). Diversity within the Federal Government mean lowly positions in the "fields" picking the cotton and White task masters at the top watching over them. Thus, there is NO true diversity at the top. I know what I am talking about, I have 42 years of Federal Service.

    • @mylaclay5532
      @mylaclay5532 7 років тому

      I have recently been researching the FSO opportunity for myself....your observation isn't surprising to me, but it is quite disappointing that the State Dept's goal when hiring black people is within the lines of tokenism. Welp, now I have no clue what to do with my life. lol. Do you regret that you spent almost half a lifetime in Federal Service?

    • @RonsWorld5
      @RonsWorld5 7 років тому +5

      I do not regret entering the Federal Government or Foreign Service. I have worked very hard and dealt with unimaginable racism throughout. Though highly educated, skilled and performance rated throughout my career, I have seen "MANY" White people who have 5-7 years vested enter in and jump past me and be given promotions and Foreign Service assignments in which they are not qualified. You see, they may have a relative already in the Foreign Service who pull some strings for them. When I confront the selection board, they hem and haw and clear their throats and object to you questioning them or asking for a reason why lesser virtually unknown persons are put in those positions. They do not give you an answer. You feel cheated. What it really boils down to is that you are the wrong color OR you are too Black. I retire from Federal Service within a month and I will be writing a book on this subject. Most people have no idea what goes on (and what Black Folk go through) within the Federal Government and in particular with Foreign Service. I highly recommend you read a book entitled "No Fear" by Marsha Coleman-Adebayo. Or at least listen to her story via UA-cam videos about her experiences at the Environmental Protection Agency. It is heart-breaking, eye-opening, and it will make you angry. Something very similar happened to me within the Foreign Service. Strong African American males and females are viewed as a threat and as persons who MUST be kept in the barrel.

      Token or not I️ want to be there in Africa . I️ did not make the world I️ was born into it. I️ wake up everyday African American and I️ know the odds are stacked against us but that is exactly what keeps people from trying and this field fascinates me. Discrimination everywhere in every forum from the grocery store to the u.s government I️ have worked hard and watched people who barely do anything on the job get promoted or never be reprimanded for ignoring policies and putting our clients at risk. I️ want it be a FSO and discrimination does not put fear in my heart .

    Foreign Service Officers are the face of America around the world. At a time in the not so distant past, FSOs were almost always European American, middle to upper class and from the Northeast. Today, there are more women and minorities, but they are underrepresented, because they under apply. But let's not address that. The State Department is working to remake the institution into one that looks like America today; diverse and multi-cultural. The government has been trying to make all government jobs, state and federal as non-white as best they can for decades. You can only get a government job if you are white by having a degree in a very technical field.

  • @pep590
    @pep590 7 років тому +3

    So 82 and 86% of the Foreign Officers are EUROPEAN AMERICAN, while only 5.6% of the Officers are black. So if you are European American and male, the government is doing all they can to make sure you are turned down based on your ethnicity. But not to worry as for decades in so many areas, the push to get more blacks interested enough to apply and also to qualify has had little success. It is kind of an insulting way to treat European Americans after being there and going overseas for your country, by telling them that they are not wanted at this time. Whites need not apply should be the sign hanging up. But we are used to it.

    • @RonsWorld5
      @RonsWorld5 7 років тому +2

      How many African American FSOs are US Ambassadors? Better yet, how many African Americans are US Ambassadors in Africa?

    • @pep590
      @pep590 7 років тому +2

      Sadly, many don't care to be or they would be I'm sure, with all the encouragement and support for blacks to be a U.S. Ambassador. The push to land any non-white applicant as ambassadors seems to be very high. The video just stopped short of telling all whites to not apply. What else can the government do if people are not interested. I went on a mission trip to Rwanda and all of the locals asked us why they never see any black Americans come to their country on missions? I didn't know what to tell them, but I felt bad for them. But the bottom line is that this video is offensive and borderline racist in some of their presentation. I guess their idea is that if we demonize whites some, then maybe that will motivate more blacks to apply? Who knows for sure.

    • @mylaclay5532

      you have to acknowledge the fact that many African American lack the means and resources to learn about these types of career opportunities. I'm 21 years old and my newly established mentor JUST informed me about this, when I've never heard anything about it in my life. How could you blame people's ignorance when those at fault are ones who refuse to spread their own knowledge about an opportunity like this?

    I hope diversity does snot mean sacrifice skill. say for example you had 2 white man scored 130 on the test, one female scored 95 and one black male scored 55 which is below the passing, will we tell the white male to go to hell and take the female and black male? we should take skill over diversity.
