  • 💝 KNEE REPLACEMENT RECOVERY 💝
If you are facing a knee replacement, you may be interested in my knee replacement recovery video. It is now about two weeks after the surgery and I am doing fine. Although I still have some pain and swelling, the pain is manageable and the swelling is subsiding. My knee replacement recovery has been relatively painless (considering that this is a major surgery) and I am now just on over-the-counter meditation. I am walking with no cane or walker, going up and down stairs and driving. I don't want to mislead you, as I still have a great deal of healing in front of me, but I am pleased by my results at this point.
I have been told by both my Physical Therapist (PT) and my surgeon's nurse that my recovery at this point has been VERY rapid (although it will be six months to a year before I am totally back to normal). Please don't compare your results with my results, as each person is different. Perhaps my recovery is somewhat easier because I am only 59.
Following are the general tips I can give you from my experience:
    1. Follow everything your doctor and PT suggest. They are the experts and they know your situation.
    2. DO YOUR PT EXERCISES EXACTLY AS PRESCRIBED. The surgeon's job is over in a a few hours. YOUR job is to do what it takes to make your new knee function as perfectly as possible. The ONLY way to do that is to do your PT exercises as if your knee's health depends on it. It does.
    3. This is just my general advice, but as soon as your doctor permits, try to wean yourself off any narcotic pain medications to avoid addiction (again, with your doctor's guidance).
    4. I just discovered another UA-camr who went through knee replacement surgery who had an AMAZINGLY rapid recovery. He says he did this by doing all his PT exercises and also eating an anti-inflammatory diet consisting of lean proteins, vegetables, fruits and nuts from the week prior to about six weeks after the surgery (no flour, sugar, alcohol or processed carbs). I plan to start this type of diet today as I still have quite a bit of swelling and my usual diet is close to this diet anyway.
His name is Todd Burrier and here is the link to his video:

I had my knee replacement April 19th. Now I can say it was the best thing I could have done to bring my life back to normal. The first two months were total recovery, but months three and four were the beginning of walking life again. Now at six months I can barely slow myself down. I am so thankful to my Lord for giving me my healing.

This video has really put me at ease. I am 53 and am having a knee replacement in a few days. It will be my very first surgery and I’ve been really nervous not knowing what to expect. Your positivity and way of thankful praying has touched my spirit. I now feel hope instead of fear. I love your honest approach in life. You have a beautiful light and a bright soul. God bless you.

Hi Beth, I just discovered your channel today while searching for info on derma rolling then I saw this video. I am 50 years old. I had my right knee replaced on March 1st and left knee on June 7. I had extensive arthritis and have been in pain for years and it took some time to find a doctor willing to replace at my "young" age. Your video really inspired me. My first knee was much easier than my second but I am staying positive! Wishing you all the best!

Hi Nancy, Bless you! I am three weeks out and it is a challenging experience. As you know, it takes time and patience to heal, as well as lots of PT! I am glad you had your second knee done. Both of us can look forward to being about to walk and be more active. I am so glad for you Nancy. I will be thinking of you and hoping for your totally perfect recovery! XXOO

What a great video, Beth, to this retired ole' nurse! I'm glad my professional contemporaries treated you right! I'm thrilled that you didn't feel too lousy post-operatively, for too long, and that you are very pleased with your physiotherapist. Tramadol is an effective synthetic opioid pain medication used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain that was successfully used in Europe for quite some time before it began to be used here in North America. I am glad it offered you effective post-operative pain management. You are right; no one wins in this situation if they test their new joint by being too much of a 'rock star', too soon! What you have experienced is absolutely normal, and you will eventually be fully recouperated, your rehabilitation will be complete, and your quality of life will be enhanced as a result of your decision to have knee replacement surgery! Remember; total knee replacement is major surgery, and it required hospitalization following the insertion of an artificial joint to replace your damaged knee joint. It can take between three to six months to a year following post operative healing, and physical rehabilitation in order to completely recover to maximum muscular strength and endurance to support the new joint that will allow you to fully enjoy an enhanced quality of life without continued pain, discomfort, and disability. You are on your way, missie! Keep up the great work, and rehabilitative efforts, and stay positive, Beth! Great to see your parents, your sweetie, and best girlfriends! You have a wonderful support system which is also very important! Your flowers were gorgeous! The new 'jammies' might have been a little too hot to wear, but they did look awfully pretty on you! Onward & Upward; hugs, and best wishes for a speedy, and complete recovery, my sweet Southern friend, Sherrey💗

Sherry, What wonderful comments! Thanks! Your comment came at just the perfect time for me as I need to remember that it was a major surgery and that I won't be totally back to normal for 6 months to a year. I get so impatient!! You have reminded once again though how important it is to stay with my PT exercises each day and just go through the process. I am doing very well, but of course I still have some swelling and discomfort. You know, when I put that video together I realized that I really do have a great support system and love around me. Thanks for your sweet reminder. Have a great weekend coming up! XXOO

Congratulations! You have so many wonderful things to look forward to. I had BOTH of my knees replaced on November 19, last year (2016). Both were bone on bone. At about 3 months was my biggest turning point. I too loved physical therapy...it worked wonders. We are in CO, so I didn't go w/o assistance (walker/cane). Too much snow and ice. My sister came from Houston to take care of me during weeks 2 and 3. That was wonderful. Please feel free to reach out anytime. Been there/done that. I just turned 65 on July 9. I am really proud of you! Blessings...Laura xo's

Growing up in Stillwater and being a graduate of OSU, I was thrilled to see your husband's jacket! I watch ALL of your videos and am so happy that the worse is behind you and that you are progressing well. Thank you for your insight on what true beauty is---watching a lot of you tube can make us feel very inadequate. I also appreciate your not being afraid to talk about God and prayer. Being thankful for all that He has done, is doing and will do is a life changer! Looking forward to your future videos!

Hi Lynette, What a sweetheart you are - and a Cowboy to boot!! Wow!! Alan went to OSU all four years and I was just there for just one semester. I LOVED it! Unfortunately, though, the boyfriend I was trying to escape by going to OSU, got hold of me again and I came back home to my local university. OSU is wonderful and we still go to the occasional homecoming game there. Hideaway Pizza is awesome too! Yes, God is good. I try very hard to not push my beliefs on others, but sometimes they come out. You are so right about being thankful. It's the ONLY way to enjoy our lives. Love you hon!! XXOO

I think an important life lesson is to embrace all the aspects of who we are and that includes loving ourselves on the days when we feel less than. Giving up the need to be perfect or live in a perfect world is liberating. You've really come through this with flying colors . . . and you look great!

Hi sweetie, You are so right! Perfection is really a character defect and it doesn't bring happiness with it. I really fight that perfection urge too much. Hi Natalie, I am glad you are having the surgery as having our knee lock up must be uncomfortable. I had a very good initial recovery, but then I kind of peaked. I am about five months out and my knee is still a tiny bit swollen and doesn't feel totally normal yet, but the surgeon said it can take a year until you are able to kind of forget you had anything done. I just wanted to tell you that so you know that if you have a bit of discomfort for while that it's very normal. I just said a prayer for your perfect outcome. Bless you! XXOO . PS . I just subscribed to your channel. Congratulations! You look wonderful!

she also doesn't say anything about having to lay on your back only as it's too painful to lie on your side. My GF is going nuts with the pain and she is in a recliner. Very difficult to sleep thru the pain. Also u will need somebody to look after you 24/7 for the 1st 3 weeks. Food, bed changes, help to get up to bathroom. I move slow so when I get close to the BR, I pee my nightie or PJs. The Rx will make you depressed that's the side effects of them. Pain meds are always constipating. Altho' I am 5 weeks still no appetite at least the nausea and vomiting {from pain} has now stopped. It's not the sweet easy recovery u see this gal going thru....

I had a knee replaced Thursday, it’s Sunday now. My experience was exactly like yours. I had a great, easy time in the hospital and very little pain. In fact, the day after surgery before I went home, the PT had me climbing stairs since we have them here at home. On Friday night, at home, things suddenly took a turn for the worse as far as pain and mobility. I really appreciate this video and now I know that pattern is somewhat “normal”. J Lowell, it'll be the best thing ever! I am 21 days post op and the pain is about the same as before surgery. My operation was my first one ever and I'm 62 yo! I'm a healthy woman but overweight. I too stopped using my walker about a wk ago. I do my exercises 2-3x a day, take my meds for "pain management" and ICE, ICE, ICE! For the first time in a year, I walked around my block. That was quite an accomplishment for me after the surgery. My P/T is awesome. I'm blessed. My insurance covers 6 home sessions so I don't have to worry about driving or transportation yet.
I occasionally use my cane when walking around house. I'm doing my chores ie. laundry, cooking, keeping house neat. Whew, I sure feel it when I've pushed hard and done too much. Would I do it again? Absolutely!
Don't be afraid, be prepared and ready to enjoy life again!

Great video! I'm at almost 48 hours post op for a partial right knee replacement and this is where I'm at so far. Day 01 - During surgery, I had a spinal block which meant I had no pain for the first 24 hours and refused all pain meds. I felt like a rock star during this time and was doing all the range of motion exercises and walked up and down the hospital hall with the walker. I did so well, they took the walker away and I started using a cane! Day 02 - Big Surprise, as the spinal block wore off I started feeling the pain. I did well in PT during the morning and was released from the hospital. After I got home, the pain became unbearable and I was forced to give in to the pain medications. That night walking with a cane was difficult, but I pushed through. The range of motion exercises have been a beast and I can't do as many or bend my knee like I did the first day. I'm a strong person, but last night the pain almost had me in tears. I did sleep 5 hours last night, so that's a plus. This morning at the start of day 03, I'm still in severe pain and have been icing the knee since getting up at 5:30 am. I did one small set of exercises (5 of each knee bend and straightening) and the pain is severe. I was going to try and power through this without the strong pain medications, but at this point I don't think I can do the exercises without them. I know things are still very early in my recovery, but I wanted to share my experience of the first couple of days after the surgery. For a little background, I'm a 50 year old male and have been experience severe knee pain the last 6 months. After having a scope in March, I was told I had bone on bone in 3 places (one knee compartment) due to arthritis. The surgeon made a game time decision regarding a full or partial replacement, so I woke up not knowing what I had. The partial is suppose to be a faster recovery, but at this point I'm second guessing that. Hope this helps someone reading the comments!

HI there. Thanks so much for sharing your experience as I know many readers here would love to read about your experience. Every one is different in terms of how they respond pain wise and please don't worry about taking the pain meds as that's what they are there for. My feeling is that if you helps you be able to do your PT it's worth it. Please don't even evaluate it too much until six months have passed. That was the time at which I finally realised it was a good thing to have done. Now I truly have my life back and am so glad I did it. I know in time you will feel that way too. Bless you and I wish you a great recovery. Beth

Pain meds are very important because otherwise your body gets sidetracked fighting the pain instead of healing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Three years ago I had knee surgery and he did what he could, but he said that evenually I will need knee replacement surgery. Ortho doctor said that he wants me to hold off as long as I can because he feels that I am too young to have the surgery- I am 42. So since I have had the surgery I have cortisone shots every 3 months. My knee hurts so bad right now that I made an appointment to with the orotho. I might need to have another MRI- my knee doesn't feel stable. That appointment is next Wednesday. I am amazed at how good you look after surgery and how positive you are. Sending good wishes and prayers for healing. Take care!!

Hi Jodi, Our stories are similar. I had a torn meniscus surgery about 3-4 years ago that really did about nothing. Then I started on the shots every three months but they quit working. I just got so tired of not being able to take walks without my knee swelling. My surgeon told me that now new knees last about 20 years. Good luck with your doctor's appointment. You deserve to live without pain. Just this morning I stopped taking the one pain pill I was still taking each day. It is still swollen and it hurts a bit but every day it's getting better. Blessings to you. Let me know what he says! XXOO

Having the knee replacement was the best thing I ever did and I think you will also enjoy it. Of course that or this is a decision you’ll have to make with your doctor but good luck!

Thank you so much for this video, particularly the details. I was told two months ago I need a knee replacement. Fortunately, I am not in much pain most of the time so I can hold off a bit. I'm moving to a new city for a new job, so I need to wait. Your philosophical thoughts were lovely. I agree that internal beauty is more important than external, BUT if I look my best on the outside I feel more confident overall. One thing I've found is that no matter how old we get, we are still young inside. I'm never going to look 35 again, as you said, but at least now my skin is brighter each morning and my makeup doesn't tack on the years. I like being 59, but want to be the best 59 I can be. You put a lot of time into this channel. I really appreciate the content, wherever it goes. You are sweet and you care and it shows. I really liked your makeup, particularly the lips, on the video of the morning before surgery! Lovely look! Take care of yourself as you continue to heal. Hi sweetie, I am about six months out now and it is really getting much, much better. I can now walk on a treadmill again, where I couldn't do so for years. I will tell you though that my recovery initially was very rapid - in fact, the doctor was kind of amazed. Then it did slow down though and I had some discomfort and a bit of swelling which lasted for months. In the new year I plan to make a part two to that video to explain how the rest of the healing went. They say it's normal for it to take a full year for the new knee to feel totally normal again. That's normal. I just wanted you to know that. Being able to exercise again makes me very happy I did it. Blessings to you. I know yours will go well too if you do get it. Have a great Christmas! Thank you so much for your quick reply, so sweet of you. Prior to your surgery, did your knee get worse in the winter time? My knee is tolerable throughout most of the year, besides the fact of only having 90° range of motion. However, in the winter time it starts to really stiffen up and get really sore by the end of the day. These flare ups are becoming more frequent. Its so depressing to me that I can't go on long walks with my wife, or hike up a mountain with my kids to see a beautiful view. Its for these reasons that I'am looking at youtube videos about the TKR surgery and seriously thinking of biting the bullet and doing it. If I have to have a revision surgery in 15 or 20 years, so be it.
Did you feel any difference when you started eating a paleo diet? I have heard that cutting out inflammatory foods in you diet can make the flare ups less frequent.
      Thank you so much!

I'm so glad that things went well and that you're on the mend Beth. Thank you for sharing your journey because some day that will be me getting my knee replaced but I'm putting it off as long as possible by getting the synvisc injections which work great for me and I'm due for another round now.
When you were talking about not wearing makeup and true beauty, here's the way I look at it. I can get up in the morning and not put makeup on at all and still be me all day. I look at my environment and the people around me and through my eyes, everything is the same as if I DO have makeup on. It's not until I look in the mirror that I see what others see but then I question, do they see Karen with no makeup or do they see the real Karen who has her personality, inner beauty, compassion, love, laughter, sadness and every other emotion and and trait that is really me and what God gave me when I was born?
You know that I love and adore makeup but that's my mask and my way of expressing myself and like you, it brings me joy. It wasn't until came to that realization of looking at the world through my eyes, makeup or not, what was important for people to see about me. I hope this all makes sense but that became an eye opener for me.
Keep getting better and thank you for sharing your joy with us as it becomes our joy too. Hugs! Karen

Aww.. thanks so much for sharing this experience with us. Everyone is so different in their recovery but a couple of things you mentioned hold true for just about everyone. The first is how you felt your first week post op. Between being uncomfortable, immobile and all the drugs that have passed through your body it's no wonder that first week is rough. I'm glad you talked about this for anyone who may be considering surgery or has just had it. Thankfully, this phase passes. I'm also glad you talked about mobility and aspirin in terms of preventing blood clots. Last year my daughter developed a DVT in her calf after foot surgery. She's also a nurse and was so careful but ended up with one anyway. She then ended up with a pulmonary embolism and was a very sick young lady.. I did not leave her side for 5 days (because you know, no one could take care of her as well. Lol). Anyway, with each new video you just looked like you felt better in each.. Im so glad that the surgery is now behind you and you can continue on the road to full recovery.. Keep up the good work and happy healing!! XOXO Sue

Hi Sue, Bless you on what you went through with your sweet daughter! I am so glad it all worked out alright. Thanks also for reminding me of the important of continuing to take that aspirin. I heard of a young women who didn't take it and DIED of a blood clot! You are right about the first week being hell. It really was! Just this morning though I am three weeks out and finally feel optimistic again! Thanks for that bit of encouragement Sue. I appreciate it. XXOO

I'm not trying to scare anyone against having this surgery, but I'm 2 weeks out, and I'm in a rehab, and honestly. The pain has been pure hell. My surgeon never offered the choice of having an epidural. I couldn't lift my leg up a few inches off the the bed the first week. I now can lift it several inches. I'm praying that this will get better and I'm sure it will, and I had prayers also

Maria, it sounds like researching doctor's credentials and referrals might have helped. This type of operation had become so advanced, we are walking a few hours after this major surgery. My young surgeon does not believe in catheters, motion machines or regab facilities. I pray your situation will improve soon. I learned a lot by watching YT videos by doctors, trainers and generous people like this lovely lady sharing their stories. Please take control of your healthand get that knee moving!

i had foot surgery today (July 21st). Stitches and a cast. So weird that we are having surgery so close together. I agree about the nurses. The surgery wing was cold in my hospital as well. My surgery was in and out. It's funny you can move your foot and I can move my knee. Between us we have one healthy leg. I hope that you have a speedy recovery. I pray as well. The card you read certainly applied to me as well.

So happy I came across your video! I'm having partial knee replacement in April and can't wait for same reasons as you, one being I really miss the treadmill and walking up and down stairs is ridiculous. I'm 56 but feel 26 inside lol. Thanks for all the good tips and I look forwarding to following you for your beauty tips as well.

Hi sweetie, Congrats on having the knee replacement. I am 7 months out and I have a tip for you. DON'T let your surgeon let a resident close your knee. The resident who closed my knee created a very large scar and his comment after the surgery was "You can't expect me to be perfect!" Well, I really had thought the surgeon was doing the whole surgery so that was kind of a shock to me. Also, understand that for 6-9 months you may still have a bit of discomfort and may even second guess have had it done. I actually did that for six months but now a month later than that I am back on the treadmill with no pain and swelling at all! I am SO glad I had it done. Good luck hon. I will be posting my following video #2 soon. XXOO

    • @TC-yt4pg
      @TC-yt4pg 6 років тому

Thanks for the tips. It has been on my mind about a resident so I think I will make it clear to my surgeon that no resident will do any work on me. They can watch that's it. I'm ready to get back on the treadmill!

Hi Margaret. I totally get where you were coming from as these surgeries do seem so major. I really hope you will consider seriously getting the knee surgery. Although the first six months were a bit difficult, and you do have to keep up with your PT, once that period was over, I felt it was the best thing I ever did to have any replacement. It’s like I don’t even feel my knee at all anymore if I can do everything I used to be able to do when it was much younger. God bless you and I wish you well in your decision.

Hi Myra, Nice to hear from you. Yes, I really like the drugstore brands and I really like that Essence line. I like it because for a couple of dollars you can get a nice lipstick or a great mascara. You can have a variety of great products with that line - maybe even a full face of makeup - and still stay well under $20. I know what you mean about the sunscreen. I am about to run out of the expensive one I currently use and am on the lookout for a less expensive alternative. Love you hon! XXOO

Congratulations on getting your knee surgery. Just follow up with the PT and your doctor say and I know you’ll be very pleased with the results. For the first six months after I worried that I’ve made a mistake getting it because my knee just felt a little uncomfortable. After about six months though I almost never feel my knee and it is made a huge difference in my life being able to walk without pain or swelling anymore. Also, when they put you out it feels pretty good. I always try to stay awake and enjoy it as they’re asking need to count backwards from 10 to 1. I actually envy you that you get to go through that. It’s pretty pleasant.

Finding this is a blessing because I will see the orthopedic doctor on Monday.
I'll have right knee replacement soon and the left one as well when I'm healed.
Too say I'm scared is an understatement I'm terrified of the unknown in this operation.
    The epidural scares me though.
My double knee pain right now is excruciating and I hate taking pain pills so I avoid themes much as I can.

After really years of not being able to walk without my knee swelling - I could not even walk a block without the swelling, I am now able to walk on the treadmill 30 minutes a day. I used to love working out and I am finally able to get back to it. Also, my mood which is often depressed has really improved as I've been able to use the treadmill.
