I use a halfback and regista combo in my WM formation. (3-2-2-3 AM DM narrow). Works beautifully. 3 pressing forwards (attack) 2 AMCs (attacking midfielders on support) Halfback, Regista Wide centerback (defend), ball playing defender (defend), wide centerback (defend) To help the defense, I assign 2 strikers to man mark the opposition fullbacks or wingbacks. And the 2 attacking midfielders man mark the opposition CMs or DMs, whichever they use. It makes us very hard to score against and we often win the ball back high up the pitch. We use direct passes to take advantage of the 5 forwards and AMCs.
I love to pickup an experienced DM like a Busquets, Matic, Soucek or Henderson for mentoring reasons and throwing in to close out games when they’re available for free. I love the prospect of rejuvenating careers of experienced ones with a declining trajectory (think Nice with Balotelli, Ben Arfa, Sneijder) the HB role is an excellent role for just that since you can deploy a average DLP and he’ll flourish if he got the necessary playmaking attributes and traits.

The key to HB is having 2 good Wbacks, one ball playing defender (and a box to box midfielder recommended (or similar fighter midfielder type of role) as the midfield might suffer when the hb drops on a lose ball). Jorge Jesus plays a HB all the time in his real time tactics, he also played Fejsa, Matic there when he was at Benfica.
Different fm but I use inverted wingbacks with my half back and my cb would on stay wide. My wing backs would off er the ball in midfield positions creating a m shape. Wingers stay wide. My other 2 midfielders would overload ina attacking spaces.
Lovely role indeed! Would be even better if the spreaded CB’s would return to the centre a tiny bit quicker after the ball is progressed upfield tho. Tend to leave the gap open a little too long even after the HB moved into midfield 😅
Very cool - just changed my DM in one of my saves. My question though - when those WBs go up and the CBs go wide, do you have issues with just the HB covering runs through the middle since they are so OP in this year's game?
1st try hb in a 5421 system paired with regista. Hb doesn't drop as early as in a back 4 it seems. Also the movement of the wide dc seems a bit awkward even on wcb support. I was hoping they would drive ahead to support the wbs. Will test more

Agreed. I'd be wary about using it if your team isn't a possession one or one that wins it back high up

Can do. It's why it can be risky doing it with a team that loses the ball a lot. I like to use it to break teams down if they play narrow

I gave the role of Half Back to press more, tight marking and tackle harder, wants him to play a similar role to BWM, only more advanced
