Hello Steve, I am an engineer and I really appreciate the explanations breaking down the different movements. The Release The Clubhead video was eye opening and tore down misconceptions I have had for YEARS and now I understand why I have never been able to reach my potential. Thank you...rgds, EricT
That driving range looks awesome, with the sand bunker there. I been wishing my club course had a bunker to hit all my irons outa to practice my distances for fairway bunkers and such
Steve, I’ve been playing for about 5 years , never improving in distance but ever since I’ve found your Chanel, learning a lot and putting it into practice, suffer with distance, I’m about 6’1 and consider stronger but can only hit drivers about 200 yards, I hit it as hard as I can with my hands with no results. Now I’ll put it into practice. Great tips , simple with out getting people so confused like others I’ve seen :) Thanks and great Chanel. Gus from California
Hey Gus same problem here. I am above average in strength and can't hit much past 200 yds. with my driver either. I started lifting he left heel and added 25-30 yds! I think because we are strong have a hard time believing relaxed arms will add distance. I am starting to change my co dept after watching this and seeing the skinny women hit their irons as far or farther than I do!
I'm eager to try this method. My cousins trained with Mike Addison and consistently hit it 300+ yards back in the 90s - before the all the improvements in divers and distance balls. I'm 52 and generally drive it 250-270 yards fairly straight without the extreme wrist cock at the top and without the deliberate release starting early. I'm eager to see what improvements this can make. I'll try this out this weekend.
I just tired this in my backyard against my net and it sounds like an explosion. Wow. I can't wait to get to a range to check my distance and accuracy.
Steve - great video. You answered a lot of the questions I had on swinging faster. I still have a couple questions on the transition and which hand powers thru impact- 1) what are you actively/consciously doing to start and move thru the downswing? Swinging the left arm as fast as possible, or turning your torso and taking the left arm along for the ride? 2) as your thumbs push the uncock, are you using more right hand to uncock and push the back of the shaft down and thru impact? What I'm asking is how much power the right hand adds to the downswing and thru impact. I've always been a left arm puller, but my left shoulder gets sore after hitting a bucket of balls if I try and swing faster. When I've tried to add right hand power I usually hook the ball and don't gain any swing speed. Thanks !
@@Inmotion70 I tried that last night and either left the face open or hit shanks. Too passive I guess. I went back to swinging the whole "triangle" but mostly an arms swing and had great results. I have to keep my back leg (right leg) pretty straight and flexed into the back swing and downswing to keep from hitting behind ball. I was getting 112-115 mph driver on my more aggressive swings, so I think I found the power leak - my right leg was collapsing in the backswing.
Nicklaus , once said, he could never release the club to early from the top. That statement said to me that as long as my hands are moving forward , I can release at any time, as hard as I need too. As long as I feel that my hands don’t slow down through impact.
I love this video, great job as usual. Question: I have people telling me to "swing left" which I'm having trouble understanding but I assume it means after contacting the ball. It's kind of like "releasing the club" they just say it and expect you to understand. Do you advocate this? If so, can you explain it.
Does the wrist set have to be correct to unhinge correct, as I seem to hinge to a bowed left wrist then unhinge by cupping the left wrist causing slappy high and this shots. Thanks
I feel like defining release is one of the biggest impediments to golf instructions. I personally relate release when the club head overtakes the handle. Even though the entire downswing is the act of releasing, I can hold the "release" until that point that the club head overtakes the handle. It's all perspective and I think everyone has a different one.
Thanks Steve. Implemented this method about 18 months ago. Shot a 70! My normal is 80-85. With an occasional 76-79 on this course. But I hit some irons thin maybe because ball.position was too far forward. Anyway after that career best round I went back to old harpoon ing and holding release to scores that have risen dramatically. 85 is a good day! So practiced this as best as I could understand and hit higher and farther and straighter. Good combo.Still miss time a few where body gets too quick and I hit some 10 yd hooks.Any thoughts on how to synch up body and arms? Maybe I will visit you for lessons. Where are you located?
I want to do this well, but when I actively throw the clubhead I’m far more likely to open the shoulders at impact causing all kinds of problems. Thoughts on how to overcome?
@@Inmotion70 I don't know about you, but when I snap my left wrist as described, there is muscle activity in my left tricep too. So the combination of wrist, forearm, and some upper arm muscle activity seems to "awaken" my shoulder, too. It's just hard for me to separate the two and keep the L shoulder passive while the rest of the L arm is active in some way. I'll go back and try it again, but I know it's been a long-standing challenge for me and it's been easier to be consistent if I leave all of it passive, even if I don't get as much distance. But as I said, I'd love to overcome that problem.
I have a rod in my left wrist with screws and up almost to the elbow. My problem is that no matter which club I use (woods, irons and hybrids what would be the best way to get more distance I now get about 100 150 yards. Thank YOU
3 index, 65 yrs old with ss of around 95, indeed start down with late release and lag. Although I know Nicklaus said you can never release the club early enough, and I've heard Malaska talk about it, I think your explanation is best, and when I do it there is an absolute 20 more yards for me. I have a question about your head position at impact; you resemble David Duval with your head looking up and forward vs staying still and back. Any thoughts on the position of the head; my guess is that the key is to feel total freedom in the throughswing. Thanks.
Hi Steve, great way of explaining the power of the release, but i thought a lot of viewers would strudel with this as it looks with this drill is a massive rolling of the wrists at impact. which would cause massive hooks. As Mike Austin explains the rolling of the wrists happen well after impact. But i understood because i watch all your videos. Nice video but not for new viewers of you channel.
I am not so sure that 90(+) in the follow through is important. You need a lot of right wrist extension for that to be possible. Adam Scott, for example, goes into right wrist flexion then, and resultingly has only a minimal angle. Maybe that's due to a prior, different, swing concept, possibly connected to his lack of any vertical head move too?
Steve love your videos. Looks like you are a single plane guy. I am 63 and have decent speed on my MEVO averaging around 97 MPH. I have been working on this and my biggest challenge is what I would call sequencing. When I do it right I have been killing it getting my speed up to almost 102. The challenge is sometimes I get my hands way out in front which promotes this insane low hook. Any suggestions as to how to synch things up better. I know this works just from looking at the numbers on the MEVO plus I hit a few balls on a couple of our longer holes today and the ones I hit great were markedly farther with much more ground carry as well. Thanks.
So first check grip and clubface of course. Then make sure you're not standing up early extending. I did a video or two with my swoosh out in front and around to the left drill like you're hitting a slow pitch softball to left.
Thanks Steve, very instructive. What you advise obviously works well if you swing at 150mph, so starting the release at arms parallel will achieve max speed just after contact. But if we mortals start at the same time we take much longer to reach impact so may cast if can only swing at 90mph? Interesting to see your baseball practice swing; Milo Lines uses a baseball type swing and preaches, what seems to me, a different timing, but still hits it miles like you. Interested to hear your views on the two different schools of thought. Many thanks again,
Milo is probably misinformed. If he got on the same 3D motion system you would see he's applying uncocking force from shoulder high. It's the same timing for all golfers if they want to strike the ball squarely.
Steve, Milo cannot be misinformed if he hits the ball over 350 yards, and clearly demonstrates how he does it, with his hands ahead of the club face at impact. His advice is exactly the opposite of yours and he says “you don’t want the club overtaking the lead arm before you hit the ball ..as you are no longer in control, and the club is decelerating”. This is demonstrated in slow motion in ‘Tow it Thru’. In his other YT video ‘Tow it to Smash It’ this is demonstrated at 2.46; and at 6.48 and 8.37 he clearly states that you should not throw the club early, and explains why. Just goes to prove there is more than one way to hit a golf ball and smash it over 300 yards I suppose. I assume that neither way is wrong, but would be interested in your take on his method.
@@thurlestonetennis2447 No. Nobody actually does this. I was just going back through my research and watching a 3D AMM analysis on torques and forces done on a major tour winner swinging at 123 mph. His uncocking torque begins right where I said it does. Milo THINKS he is doing something but let's see what happens when he gets in the lab. The uncocking force STARTS at shoulder high and peaks just past last parallel wherein the clubhead is now traveling too fast to actually torque it any faster - kind of like pedaling a bike downhill.
Steve Pratt Golf - how can you say that nobody does this unless you look at the evidence with an open mind? Happy to accept that I am wrong, if you can explain why Milo is not doing the opposite of what you propose. He clearly advises not to start at the top, and clearly has his hands ahead of the ball at impact; the slow motion footage shows this, I think.
Proberbly u need to rotate the hips more starting from the top of the swing with the weight shift of legs/feet first. As a high jumper do the the leg being straight - making that uplifting force threw the whole body - hope it can makes sence!
Hey Steve. Would you say it is an uncocking at the start of downswing, then the flap toward the bottom? If so, I have a hard time doing both. Happens so fast. If I focus on wrist cock, I can create more speed but occasionally leave face open. If I think of releasing the flap at the start, I hit it much better but wonder if I'm leaving a little power potential on the table. Thanks for any clarity.
Yes for a stock shot. You will catch an iron with a slightly forward leaning shaft and a downstrike because the ball position is several inches further back.
When I try this, I am all over the place with my drives. It just seems like with more smaller muscles involved- fingers, hands, wrists, arms- the less dependable the swing is. No?
When i started to switch to this method i was all over the place for about 10 days and driving was always best part of my game. I was hittinh pop up, slices & hooks but stuck to it and started hitting better, longer drives with what seems like less effort and less timing. This particular video just reminded me to get the woosh just after the ball. I think i was starting to woosh a little to early (at the ball).
@@derekbrooks8705 had another ah haa today after watching one of Steve's analysis of kyle long drive guy. Today i focused on long left arm bringing it as straight and high as i could and left shoulder wayyy under and then releasing clubhead as we're taught here. Result was i think best driving day ever. If i posted the numbers many would not believe them so i won't even bother. I'll just say, stick with this guys teachings, best method I've ever come across.
Steve, when working on the pole drill (assuming that you have your sternum centered with the pole, saw this on on of your other release drill videos with the pole drill) without the pivot with a driver, where is the ball in relation to the pole? When you add the pivot, is the pole moving/following your sternum location/angle as torso opens up, would be nice to see a line represented for pole during the whole swing?
Yeah it takes some practice but not as much as you think. The ball mostly goes straight, high and far. You have to synch up the body and the arms. This is hardest part for me.
It is perfectly obvious that “release” is poorly defined because very good golfers do what might be called “release” very differently. It is one of those aspects of the swing, including most of the details of the supposed fundamentals like grip, stance, plane, that can be done differently with very good result as long as some basic body movements are done properly.
@@Inmotion70 sorry the impact video was very good at explaining. Was trying to get a buddy to understand he needs to shift before he lets it go. Regards
So you actually use your arms to throw the club head? I know what your saying in this, but so many people will throw away the away the angle from the top. I almost feel like you are making it too simple sounding. A video on how to throw the club from the top ( after sitting into transition) .. Like specifically which muscles to use would be interesting
Don’t agree with this at all, if you intentionally start to release the club at the top the energy is wasted by the time you will get to impact. If you’re swinging correctly the weight and momentum of the club will automatically release the club, the central nervous system will do it job if you freely swing to a target.
I don't think golf is a natural and beginners most of time swing out and in with open face hitting slices which seems you have to learn a way to hit the ball straight, if you learn as jurnor and get taught how to release then maybe you can say let the weight to release but most time I see most golfers going all over place because it's hard sport and takes time to get better
Hi Greg! It has now been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt by many PhDs in labs testing hundreds of tour players that uncocking torque occurs at shoulder height in every good golfer, including all tour golfers. Once you get past this myth, your game might move forward quite a bit.
Your energy won’t be wasted if you keep your hands moving ahead of the club head or feel that they do. The only way to lose energy is to slow up your hands before impact.
@@georgeaugustyniak3653 Wow, this is something i honestly never thought about...I suffer from both a chicken wing and early extension but I'm thinking of trying this at the range because it seems like keeping my hands (or even my arms) accelerating through impact would eliminate both of these problems. Steve - great video. Do you use the same mechanics for an iron swing or are there any tweaks in setup etc that need made? Thanks.
Setup tweaks are in ball position (progressively back) and forward lean at address (progressively forward).
To get the club handle to point back at your sternum is my hang up, swinging to the left would help? I have been working at this and I can’t do it!
Thanks for any clarity.
should it be the same feeling with irons as well?
Yes for a stock shot. You will catch an iron with a slightly forward leaning shaft and a downstrike because the ball position is several inches further back.
When I try this, I am all over the place with my drives. It just seems like with more smaller muscles involved- fingers, hands, wrists, arms- the less dependable the swing is. No?
It means you're either releasing it wrong or your body is not in position to support it.
@@jt10ball Ah Haa !
Isn't this the "speed stick" same as the "swoosh"?
Good to ...
I'd love to see your ball flight from an camera down the line, and at night so we can really see it clearly...
Keep the hinge, keep the angle.
There’s no button below to pick up anything
Can you give us a slow mo practice swing not just a slowed down video of how your doing this
No ? Yes? Is that a member only thing?
This is late message, but your pizza box video gained me 25 real yards.
I need to do a follow up on that. But awesome! Cheers!
Looks like I have some work in front of me!!!
Yes I agree. Very ambiguous term. Hardly any top teachers agree on what over the top is precisely either btw.
It must be the "Shift" part that i need more understanding...
Could be.
You definitely have an interesting and different way of explaining things! I'm a subscriber and I'm definitely a subscriber to a free release.
You can't throw it away if you keep shifting and turning.
🔥🔥🔥
Are there any other videos that you'd recommend that mention this?
Don’t talk show
Thanks Steve - very helpful
