I am really enjoying this Masterpiece Collectors Guide series. My plan was to collect Masterpiece characters through 1987 and possibly 1988, since there have been a few released now from 88'. Looking forward to the 1986 video.
The first version of this video helped me out big time when I was dipping my feet into MP collection. It is great to see how the line evolved since then and how many better options we got (mostly from 3P 😃 ) since then. 🙂
22:48 The Titan Returns one? We had them shelf warm in my Walmart years ago, of course I secured one of each and I still laugh knowing they cost so much for something that just shelf warmed. I should have bought the Legends EX Takara instead but I didn't. Missed opportunity to get a really cool box and better paint.
I remember so fondly when my mother came home one afternoon and told me she put a large transformer on layaway for me at Bradlee’s. We went back in a week or two and I was blown away to find out it was omega supreme. That fans toys design looks so g1 toy accurate… all of them do… I mean this is a character that looked goofy in the cartoon as far as shape and proportions…. Happy with the newage go at it, just for saving space. Also, I like the red alert+ version takara, is fine with me. I don’t know if I would call it a masterpiece anymore, but… very good.
28:29 the Maketoys combiners were closer to 12 inches, nowhere near 18 inches. IIRC MakeToys Devastator looks short next to Combiner Wars combiners, let alone MP ones.
Nice list. Like a trip down MP memory lane. I have both versions of roadbuster and a Hasbro whirl. We could definitely use new ones, but there might be a licensing issue since both original toys were Bandai. GIGAPOWER dinos all the way. Would be nice if takara finished the dinobots, though. Would love to see a bigger Grimlock 2.0 and the rest.
I mostly collect FansToys, but I didn't feel the need to replace DX9 Richtoffen or X-Transbots Neptune. They fit right in with the FT minivehicles anyway. I have two Gigapower Dinobots, and they are absolutely gorgeous, although Swoop's stand was useless. I'd like to get all five, but don't have the money or shelf space!
Which Blaster you want should be partially determined by which cassettes you want. I took DS as I like the full sized MMC cassettes and the DS does come with the mini Ramhorn still missing from the MMC Autobot cassette lineup. If you want micro cassettes then FT across the board for everything. 😉
For Blitzwing it looks like you used the 1.0 version from Fans Toys (the only one that has reached a physical sample shown publicly). There is a 2.0 that they showed renders for in 2019, and there has been rumors going around since 2022 that it was redesigned again so even the 2019 renders may not be accurate to what they eventually release.
Gigapower only made two of the Dinobots in weathered metallic colors. Thankfully they are my two favorites, but not being able to get a full set makes me a sad collector.
Bought teh KFC blaser for a slight sale. I think it turned out to be a factory defective one. So disappointed as at that time it didnt look like anyone was going to make a Blaster. Like a year and a half later two were made for less than I paid for the defective KFC. Super bummed. Thats what I get for not sticking with my plan to collect season one of the cartoon only. A lesson to collectors. late tax is a thing but waiting can also yield results. The best Cosmos is being reissued as a metallic version this year. Took a few years but I will finally get it.
True waiting for the best option can pay off but it can also backfire. Oddly enough Transistor is the figure that made me take the plunge into 3p deep and went from 2 to 12 overnight because of him.

I can say that waiting is still paying off. I bought a cheap KO sideswipe, but it looks like my years of complaining on the message boards about his chest are finally going to pay off. I still think the ebst version of Hotrod/ Rhodimus is out there being made and not released yet. I guess my point is, if you like it buy it, but dont FOMO your way into accepting a figure that you dont care for. I did get the bad cube insecticons and I love them. No regrets.
Cone heads. The Maketoys are the better looking set but good luck finding Dirge these days. He came out a lot earlier than the other two. Being the only one for a long time they didn't sell well at first. Then they released the other two and all the Dirge left out for sale sold out pretty quickly. Now you can't find one. I'll consider getting rid of my MP-11 but Maketoys needs to reissue Dirge in the worst way. Finding Maketoys Ramjet and Thrust is really easy. Plenty of them for sale.

The only one for sale that I could find online right now was on Amazon and the guy wants $1300. LOL Pure insanity. MakeToys would be wise to reissue "Endgame". These are the type of characters where fans want all 3 to match as a set. Myself included. No way I'm only buying two. As far as the MP-11 or Zeta options, all 3 in the set are easy to find.

Then again, Generation Toy actually *was* intended as MP at the time, but the bigger boys said "BEGONE THOT!!"; Jinbao's OSKO of Generation Toy "Gravity Builder" is more in line with MP anyway...if you want a worthy rival to DX9, Wei Jiang, or FansToys Omega Supreme offerings, you either go Toyworld or Jinbao. Period.
People don't need to spend their hard earned money replacing figures they already have! I have only ever replaced a few of mine only because of breakage and scale differences. I replaced mp-01 and mp-05 because they were wrong for the mp series, with mp-10 and mp-36. I'm in the process of replacing the seekers with the Maketoys versions(for the cost savings) I don't intend to buy any further 2.0's or 3.0's. The collecting has just gotten too dam expensive because of predatory scalping!!! I'm always getting reviewers such as yourself always saying "you need to buy this version because its so much better!" THATS BS!!!! I DON'T BELIEVE THAT!!! Now if someone might be interested, then who am I to stop anyone, if you want it by all means get what you want but I am not going to.
You are absolutely right! I approach these guides from the mindset that new collectors will want to know my thoughts on what is out there. Many times the new release is cheaper than the older out of production ones

I think for the insecticons, badcube's are quite decent.. might actually better than Fanstoys's. At least they managed to fix Bombshell's toon color.
Agree 100%. I have their first release and I'm going to pull the trigger on the die cast painted set
I agree. I have them and don't have any plans of swapping them out.
They are all great sets and Badcube was my first set. The cool thing is you can get multiple sets and have a field of Insecticons

The older Takara carbots are good but can definitely use a updated version of those

Great point I never even noticed. I looked when I reviewed the other 2 and moved on but back then Dirge was still lingering around
