      There are many reasons why it’s wrong
      1 the first rod was not prepped and tacking over and over is not welding
      2 the second rod didn’t need the tacks on the end first. Could of just done a better job with the prep when the grinder was already out
      3 welders have adjustments for a reason if your welding so hot that it looks like chewed bubblegum at the end because it’s falling out everywhere. Maybe turn it down a bit
      There is other stuff as well but I don’t really have the time to point out everything wrong with this. Just know it’s absolutely horrible and to even call it welding is a stretch

  • @Matt-the-sink
    @Matt-the-sink Місяць тому +1686

    For those asking why this is wrong, here's an explanation:
    In the first weld (if you can even call it that), he effectively tack welded it, which is a very weak weld that serves to hold the pieces together while you do an actual weld. There was effectively no penetration, as you can see right before he grinds the tack off. Pause the video right before the grind wheel comes into view, and you can actually see the layer of the filler metal on top of the rebar.
    The second part is also bad f9r pretty much the same reason. While he didn't break it to show what it looked like inside, it still looked like little penetration. What happened here is he created a hole (or gap), and just filled that gap in.

There might be a few specific applications on bridges but usually rebar splices in concrete are just wire tied together and that this usually fine because the concrete is providing the rest of the strength in tying the two overlapping bars together. It seems like this video would be a expensive operation since I can’t imagine how much electrode was used to weld two rebars together and what is the reason.

    As a welder, you want a solid fusion of the weld and the surrounding metal, this is why when buildings and bridges are welded, the beams are held apart and filled with high quality welds performed by a skilled practitioner. This basically makes it so that the columns aren't a bunch of H beams and I beams stuck together, but are more like one very big fused structure. One continuous mass of metal.

      @Dragonaiis Місяць тому +26

    • @snofrid8662
      @snofrid8662 Місяць тому +47

      @@Dragonaiis if you stick the two metal rods together with their flat ends and then weld, the welding doesn't fill the middle of the tiny gap between the rods, thus leaving an air pocket that blocks forces spreading evenly through the whole welded structure, it's the same with glueing two pieces of wood together: you always cover both sides of the two parts with glue before you put them together. Metal doesn't work like glue, thus you have to leave the gap and weld continuosly until the gap is completely filled.

    For those who don't know, the first "welding" was just Tack-welds and are never ever ever meant to be used as a final solution...
    it's low energy bonding and just barely holds pieces together, and usually used to help stick pieces together before you do real welds.
    The second welding is just kinda bigger tack-welds, there is not enough electricity/heat to have a good bond because of the start/stop welding. You want deep enough penetration into the existing metal, not just all that surface and filler welds. Think of the metal like ice cubes, you want to really melt the ends and refreeze them to make it one whole piece, not just lick the ends of the cubes and stick them together.
    Then, beyond that, the purpose of rebar is to be flexible and malleable, so welding it will create a hard and non-malleable spot where it might want to crack and fracture instead of bend. So you probably need to heat it back up and slowly cool it down (with something insulating it) to bring back some flexibility.
    I'm not a professional welder, I've just done a lot of welding in my time on this planet, so the professionals probably have more insights.

    In general, what's wrong here is that the reinforcement in concrete experiences a much greater load than hammer blows. Therefore, in the foundation of a building, it will simply break because the welded joint is still more fragile than the rest of the metal. For a reliable welded joint, the reinforcement bars must be overlapped by about 20 centimeters and welded along the entire length of the overlap.
    Plus, you should heat the joint evenly with a blowtorch to relieve residual stress in the metal.

    This steel has a high carbon content when welded at high temperatures, which causes it to temper and its hardness becomes very high, which causes it to break easily when welded. It is recommended that after welding, it be heated with a blowtorch to a temperature of 250 degrees and that the heated part be covered with plenty of construction lime, which will cause it to cool very slowly. This is called tempering the steel, but it is advisable to have it done by an experienced person.

    For all the people that want the explanation of how to do this properly:
    The second method is approxiametly correct, done with terrible technique and would not likely pass any sort of insepction performed by a CWI (Certified Weld Inspector)
    The term for this is a double bevel weld, or a v-groove; and what we are looking for is this to be a CJP. Complete Joint Penetration. Meaning the weld is repaired the steel to it's original strength.
    Not all rebar is weldable, you'll want ASTM A706 (not A615). the filler metal used must be as strong as the weakest material being bonded, In this case, you have two pieces of same material which has a tensial strength of 80,000psi. If stick/arc welding (SMAW) then an E8018 rod would be appropriate. If welding rebar to A574-50 (65,00opsi) then E7018 rod would be appriorate.
    If running MIG (GMAW) then your filler material should be undermatched as described above/as descibed by AISC D1.1 and D1.4
    A UT or MT inspection is likely to be required if this method is followed. (Ulstrasonic testing/Magnetic Particle Testing.) these inspections reveal imperfections and sometimes require welds to be backgouged and refilled, and resinspected.
    As an expereinced fabricator, this is probably the weakest version of welding rebar, and he did not do it so it was aesthetically please. Usually rebar is buried in concreted. I would recommend avoiding the CJP and overlap two pieces of rebar by 6-8" and perfroming a flare bevel weld both top and bottom, sealing the ends. Avoid inspections. where the splice would be possibly weak, there are 2x steel, the weld strength is just safety factor added on top.
    Cheers! TLDR, i already know.

    • @xLxUxSxTx
      @xLxUxSxTx Місяць тому +3

      PS: I meant to include the Joint Designation - in the tail of the double bevel weld, it would read: B-U3b (for SMAW) and B-U3-GF (for GMAW)

    No need for the pre weld. Bevel the edges. That way your weld has room to set into and you can grind the surface smooth so there is no place for the weld to snag on anything.

    Umm, non welder here, but im pretty sure the electrode is supposed to penetrate the metal and fuse to make it stronger. The second way done, there is no fusion, no penatration, so a bad weld. Correct me if im wrong

    This is a good video and example of what not to do. Always divet the bevel. If you add a button on the bevel after a full divet, it will stengthen the bond of the joint. I have been a rebar welder for 19 years. I retire next month.

    I know a number of welders that would scream about using a grinder to "pretty up" your weld. But I was raised by the instructor for Ironworkers local 395, and he was one hell of an ornamental welder, one of the best. He even passed welding exray school the first try, which I understand is about impossible. He was an old American Bridge guy that just kept perfecting his craft.

    The more I watch these unwarranted (but not unwanted) welding tutorials, the more I learn that a big part of welding is finding a way to form a cavity between the two parts for the material to flow into.
