Contra looks so good!!!!
Will wait for sale and updates. Would have preferred a pixel version. They don’t seem to understand their audience with this aspect considering this and the last new contra game.
Also, how on earth did they let this frame pacing issue make it into release on a 2D sidescrolling platformer?… and with other visually demanding titles in the genre already nailing 60fps with great frame pacing on the same system it appears poorly optimized for the Switch…
Will eventually pick it up. Really enjoyed everything about it after I went through the demo twice.
A patch that was available for all other plataforms on day one has been launched today on Switch. I don't have the tools to test the frame pacing, but it feels smoother now and more responsive. It would be interesting if you could make a comparison of the game before and after the patch in a future video.
Not having this kind of performance ready before the demo went out is just mind blowing.
@@darkrideartsEspecially considering they are asking $40 for an side scrolling shooter you could blow through in a long play session.
Excellent!
This needs a rouge lite survival mode like streets of rage 4. Still go back to that mode like 3-5 times a month.
Yeah it feels better after the patch. No more crashes either. Still locked at 30 fps, but it's fine. I enjoy it all the same.
I may have considered this around the $20-25 range, but no way this is a $40 purchase.
Worth it to me. Tons of replay value to be he had here. But as with any game, mileage will vary and cost value will be different for each person. Contra 3 for the SNES had a higher price tag upon release if I’m not mistaken, and this game has way more content than that one.
Same, i would even pick it up for maybe 30 but 40 is asking a lot
This Game looks amazing 😍 Cannot wait to play it
I'll wait for a sale. Thanks guys.
It was on sale prior to release lol
@@redcrimson1028 -10% is no sale. It's a discount.
-70% or beyond is a "sale" bro.
It’s on sale for like the first two weeks of its initial release.
I don't see 10% as a real sale
I’ve seen a few other reviews on this game but I was anxiously waiting for yours because you 2 alway do such a thorough job.
This actually looks good
I would love to see some 2D/3D platformers in Octopath traveler art style
With the replay options and challenge mode I don't feel the $39.99 is overpriced. I remember Contra 3: Alien Wars for SNES retailing for $69.99 in 1992 (so it can't be that bad lol).
Yeah, crazy how expensive games were when consoles were still "premium appliances."
it was worth every penny though compared to this.
So the reason i disagree with you though is it is 2024.....
I want to get a physical through limited run. But I also want to play it when it comes out 😅
I’ll wait and try it at later. Price is a little much right now. Thank you for the great review!
Nice to see the final review.
The small references to the more obscure contra games made me smile.
I can deal with most of the frame rate issues on the switch. My complaint about the demo version was the input lag time between pushing jump and them actually jumping. There was a very noticeable lag, and in a game like this, it definitely makes a difference. Does anybody know if the jump lag has been fixed on the real version?
I definitely am going to buy this, but that price is just a bit steep for me currently. Definitely on my list but man, that tag
Its worth it. There is a bunch of unlockable stuff they didn’t mention even.
@@fydiousmckormick I'm excited, I'm a big Hard Corps Uprising fan, this looks like a mix of that and more classic Contra
I love the old school contra games. But I may just wait for a sale on this one.
Me too well said
Looks cool
4:20 - That input latency is massive. Holy. Hahahahahaha. How can you not notice it?
I played the demo and was enjoying it thoroughly. I don’t play well on this type of action game, but the nostalgia truly adds points to this version.
May pick this up when it’s on sale to play with my boys.
I was expecting a higher score based on your last video, which felt more positive. A shame, I'll wait for a sale.
Hey guys, thanks for the review. I left the comment a couple days ago disappointed about not getting a real review, but it was a sponsored video. I appreciate this video guys.
Yeah we had to get a proper one out. Mark
I used to play Turrican on my mate's Amiga when I was a kid, and I owned and loved Super Probotector Alien Rebels on the SNES around the same time (showing my age now), and so I do have a nostalgic soft spot for these type of games. And although it is an ever-so-slightly different genre, I do love a good Shmup, so when I saw this one, I was super hyped. But when I saw that price tag, I was like "oh dear", that can wait for a very big sale. 😂 Good review as always, boys. Love ya! Almost 350k! Let's go!
I initially didn't take to it, but after enough time with the game, you end up loving it. Galuga is addicting as hell, especially when you git gud.
Like Sonic Superstars, the complaints are skill issues.
I’m terrible at this kind of games but thanks for the review, you guys never rest 💪🏼
Would love to get this one, but will wait for a price drop. In the meantime I’ll pick up the OG Contra Collection for £3.19 on the eShop
I'll probably wait for a sale on this one since it isn't a type of game I usually play
Seems like an honest shake considering the disclosure that you'd done a sponsored video for the game already. If I come across a physical copy I'll definitely pick it up.
I just finished watching your review for 'Fez'... I always prefer SwitchUp for game reviews! and as soon as I fiinished, a new vid was uploaded. Excellent... I'm tweaking, about buying another game but don't know what. Choices 🤯
You do know that tweaking means you’re doing meth 😂
I’ll get it when it goes under 10$.. I played the original Contra and Contra 3 hundreds of times but nowadays I don’t have time for action games anymore so I’ll just play it once so I can’t justify paying more than that…
I'm glad to see Konami at work again. Contra, MGS Delta, Silent Hill 2. Hopefully these remakes will fund them for some new IPs.
This should be an awesome game so they better fix some of the game issue.
solid review...more to add to the backlog
Great review! I may pick this up when i can afford to buy games again. 👍🏻
I does look fun but I agree the price is very steep!
I’ll wait until this is $3.
Crazy performance the extra lives i work hard for from 4 to 25 keeps getting taken down i hope something for this can also be looked at between performance and loosing extra lives i'm truly regretting buying this game.
It looks good but I'll wait for a discount
Yes there's a lot of unlockable characters, but it doesn't matter when all you get are 7 uninspired stages.
Ordered it today cuz i'm too fat.. eh I mean lazy, to get out my home.
bruv, you've got get this weight situation under control. i know you can do it. put down the mince and tatties and pick up a dumbell and a carrot. the dumbell is to lift and get strong, the carrot is to eat and be healthy (in case there was any confusion). i used to be 500lbs and now i'm 499 and my life has changed. you can do it, too.
@@atomicbrain9401 How did you lose that one pound and how long did it take you?
@@HeroC14 So I set out to challenge myself. I would put my Nintendo Switch on the floor across the room from me with a chocolate donut next to it. That way, if I wanted to play then I would have to roll myself all the way across the room to reach the Switch. After about 5 minutes of effort, i would make it over to the switch and have my video game and donut reward. Not bad for two years effort!!
@@atomicbrain9401 Commendable effort and results. Congratulations.
My question is, are you too lazy to get it off the porch?
Sharing this one with my brother since he wanted to get the game.
I think the latency is different while shooting. If your shooting, you drop quicker.
Is it me or does the waterfall remake section of the game the rocks that come out the walls look like they’re taking a shit lol.
Hey Mark, how do you feel about the 3 player Co-op update coming to Sea of Stars? Would you prefer a Map toggle and Quest Log/Marker come next instead?
I'm wondering if it's just the bluetooth on the Switch that creates the Lag. Cuz I do know The Nintendo Switch lags with bluetooth in general with certain games. But if you use wired or using 2.4 ghz controllers does it still lag??
Bluetooth response is usually good on Switch, and better than wired connections. The fact that wired is always better than wireless - especially on modern consoles - is one of the wrong assumptions people have. 2.4g is supposed to be faster than BT, but the fact that it often (always?) requires a USB dongle adds lag to the setup, thus making BT often the best choice.
5 bosses! If this was a Indie game it would be $15 on release like Hyper 5 with only 5 bosses. I'm not paying $10 per boss or level. Game has glitches. No online coop.
Thanks again, Mark and Glen for some epic Switch recommendations (hehe Rhyme!)
Never been a fan of the Contra games, but will definitely give this one a go!
Also happy to say that, per your recommendation, my copy of HyperPlay's RPGFan Review Card Collection arrived today! and I was one of the lucky 20 to get a poster of a fun game! Definitely a book to recommend!
Warning this is the hardest contra to date.
@@fydiousmckormickwhaaat? Harder than C arcade version? Harder than NES Contra?
I guess if you're going for one credit clears. But it's a lot more flexible than some past Contra titles, IMO. Hard game, but I think I can beat this one. To this day I have not beaten the first Contra for NES, not without the konami code.
Not top of my list but looks fun. I'm kinda wanting the new Star Wars but hearing lots of issues so might hold off for now 😢
Oh ooh! I just read an article about that. One of the worst launch or something some buyers said. Sheesh. That's rough.
So it plays well. I hopefully this will finally shut up those idiots that claim its unplayable because of 'runs to low". Personally I say it's to over priced and I'll wait for a 50% sale.
Yeah, to each their own but I really cannot understand the flack this game is getting in some quarters. It's not perfect but it's more than playable. Feels like a bit of a witch hunt to be honest.
There are more and more disingenuous creators that are just bashing switch because they know it pulls in more views. Then, an echo chamber of stupidity starts to be spread by people who never played the game themselves but get something out of telling others not to try it.
It honestly comes off as desperation. Given the Switch is the highest selling platform, it has a lot of the media and fan drones very scared. Nintendo being the market leader has never been something that the mainstream was comfortable with.
Maybe it's the lack of politics in their games. Maybe because it doesn't push the message. I don't really know.
Not sure about getting this one. I just wish it was pixels instead.
I can't believe a basic looking 2.5D game like this is so dear as they say & a physical release isn't possible
There is/was a physical up for preorder at limited run.
I don’t get how you clump visual performance and visuals together? Performance is performance. Does the game run smooth or not.
Visual appearance is if the game looks good or not. (Assuming it run smooths)
Very different things and should be kept apart.
It might just be me but I prefer the look of the 16-bit version more.
Well, this game just seems have a style
It’s not just you. Though I liked the look of Uprising as well.
Yeah give me a Contra game in the Square Enix-style pixel HD 2D art style. Now that would slap
Same here, this aesthetic just doesn't seem to fit. It's a little uncanny, how 'real' it's trying to look while also looking unreal. The design looks too saturated and colorful, giving it a mobile-game look.
@@BunchaNothin100 percent disagree. People saying this looks like a mobile game is ridiculous. I get preferring pixel art but calling like a mobile is nuts.
I have limited space in my apartment for carts and cases, so i don't mind buying digitally. It all decays at the same amount of time any way. Many people just don't like hearing or accepting the truth about physical or digital. Yes it's nostalgic to buy physical, however in today's economy, that isn't as prevalent anymore.
Does it work with single joycon on Nintendo switch?
love the game but i think ill wait for a decent price drop/sale
Thank you,Mark, great review, carry on Henry I’m with you all the way.till kingdom come
This game looks and plays great on my switch lite, people just love to complain
It was updated so many days ago
More accessible? Ok I might have to try this at some point then. Let's start with the demo!
Anyone played with the patch?
Yeah, I think they fixed the issues. Software stopped closing, frames are more consistent.
The fact that the other versions got this day one and Switch didn't is baffling. Third parties don't make any sense to me.
I played with the patch. I didn't feel that much improvement. There were more than 4gb of patch, but the game just seems more constant but it's not enough for such ugly graphics on the switch. With these graphics it should be 60 fps
They updated the game to run better
About the input lag: nobody perceives it the same way. People should really stop saying "there isn't any" or "this reviewer is dishonest by not mentioning it". Some people notice it, some don't. If a reviewer is not bothered by it or doesn't notice it but you do, just follow different review channels. It's that simple.
Fanboys. They always want to crap on anything that gets released for Switch. I can understand. Wouldn't you, if you had no games worth playing other than multiplats? I would frustrated too. 😂
@@AltairEgo1 well, I love the Switch but can recognize some games are better played on other platforms (which I don’t own btw). And this is one of them.
@@syltendo depends on your need. If you're OCD by an occasional framedrop, then yeah, get the PC version. If you're fine with a stable framerate at 30, and prefer on-the-go gaming, this version is better suited for you.
I tested this out with other friends, yes, IRL people and not just internet nerds terminally online. Had them play it undocked and they said it plays fine and had a lot of fun.
So, some of ya'll can take stock in what a bunch of redditors say, I choose real people. Not simply strangers or possible bots to form my opinions
@@AltairEgo1 Well, good for you and your friends, but I kind of take offense of your characterization of people who perceive input lag. I consider myself "real people" too you know 😛. I often play on real retro hardware or FPGA devices, which may make me more perceptible to lag than others. Also, input lag has nothing to do with framerate.
@@syltendo well then, there isn't any. Just a low framerate. I'd chalk it up to skill issue. Some people, not necessarily you, so don't take offense. Some people, blame their bad playing and disappointing outcomes on everything but themselves.
I've seen it happen all the time if you don't mind my saying. Many who don't even commit to anything beyond normal/health bar, or even play for more than a few short hours.
They blame their deaths on input lag, when it's really just that they didn't pay attention to that stray bullet or two.
Not saying the game doesn't have its issues, it does. But I'm not what you'd call a super-player in Contra by any measure. Somehow I'm able to beat hard 1-hit, but these super experts, permanently online, who apparently know the ins and outs of this game perfectly, can't even cope with 1-hit kill mode..... because the lag is killing them. Not poor skills, not needing more practice, not needing more hours. It was the lag, all along. 😆
I wana try this more then the demo.. but idk.. i loved the old game on nes as a kid.
I had a lot to think about during the loading time 🤔🤔🤔
Enjoyed the review. Playing through this right now and having a great time re-experiencing Contra. Very nostalgic for me
I will get this on sale like I do with most games these days. Can’t buy games full price anymore too many responsibilities.
... but does the Konami code work?
My opinions is need about games, real need consoles version from online games of Hard Corps Uprising, same thing as other Contra Games just a opinion in matters
Contra operation Galuga looks really interesting but I’m terrible at these kind of games. I literally tried playing contra hard-corps on the drive on NSO and say that it’s probably one of the most unforgiven oldschool games with those one hit kills for the switch version of the new game. I just think that when it’s a 2-D game it really should be running at 60 FPS. I mean the Prince of Persia and the lost Crown can run at 60 FPS then there’s no reason why this game shouldn’t be but that’s just me anyway guys great review as always.
Love run and gun games.. I think a little overpriced.. Will wait for sale. Does this look better the 2011's Hard Corps Uprising ?
I tried the demo and wasn't impressed, was fun but it's a sale buy.
Great channel! I'm 61 years old. That's too old for lag.
Great content /show i like the game 💯
I'm sure I'm in the minority, but as someone who was terrible at the original games. I'm quite glad to hear this one is a bit more accessible!
On the wish list, but will wait for the sale....still scarred from dying every mins in contra anniversary
I’m not someone that normally says this, especially since Switch is my main console, but 30fps isn’t good enough for a game like this. Maybe I’ll check it out if they do a Switch 2 patch.
Wasn't impressed with the demo
I Remember Getting Contra on the Black and white Gameboy ! such good memories ..later the Snes ..PS1... i gotta have this ...( means... begging the wife ....so i better do the dishes ) looks pukka want it need it ..gunna get it somehow !! i wish they would bring the Bionic Commando Rearmed Games to Switch !
Dude just get it. It's $35. You don't need her permission to buy something so cheap.
@@AltairEgo1Wife Kids Mortgage ...Bloody Gmae Blockers !!!
The input lag and bugs make it a wait-for-a-sale for me.
Same, but it doesn't seem to affect most people so I guess WayForward made the right choice? Very disappointed personally.
It should be 60 fps @@syltendo
@@TonyJenn I would prefer 60fps, but would tolerate 30fps if at least the input response was acceptable.
I much prefer the older Contras and Metal Slug. Did encounter a weird bug at helicopter crash in first stage, got soft locked after the crash and had to restart the game.
Contraaaa lets goooo!
Why would the switch have higher input latency?
It doesn’t. Its just bs youtube creators grifting. The switchup guys are always honest.
It’s $35 on Steam. It’s a great game and I enjoyed every minute of it.
Its worth the 40 for sure. There are a lot of things they didn’t mention as far as unlockables.
its ok...should of been FTP though
How characters perks music and so on are done just not good.
30fps is silly for this game
Too busy playing unicorn overlord
Hey Guys, Love your channel, Y'all get along swimmingly. Could you please throw me a digital code for this Switch Remake?!
I didn’t have my glasses on, but I could tell the environments were pretty lackluster. When I walked up to the tv screen, I laughed a little too loud.
Clearly you need to put your glasses on. Game looks great.
I’ll give it a whirl…with a free code (hint hint). Love Contra, but not sold after playing the demo. Prove me wrong 🍻
Depends on what you didn’t like about the demo and what platform you played it on. Specify what you mean and I can try to change your mind
Switch…it was a little clunky/glitchy at times, but hey it’s Contra and one of the better iterations that has been attempted. Kudos to the devs!
@@ryanwilliamson8622 Yeah I can’t help you there but from my understanding there is a patch for it. I play it in Steam and it’s great and it’s $35 on steam right now. I grew up with Contra. If you loved Contra 1-4 then this is for you. I’ve seen some Uprisings fans trash the game they are not true Contra fans. I respect their opinion but I guess that’s for a younger minority of fans. I remember playing that game and I hated it. I’m playing it at 60fps 4k on my pc but still the graphics could have been better but it not an ugly game by no means. It gets the job done. Gameplay feels like Contra but with new learning curves. Learning to use the charge attack for each weapon is a game changer. The perks and grinding you have to do for some of them offers a unique experience.
@@ryanwilliamson8622It’s 30 fps with frame drops on Switch. I tried the demo on PS4, and the performance was night and day. I strongly suggest choosing a higher-end platform if possible.
Having watched the sponsored video, I’m guessing this is going to get a decent score.
I'm glad the Probotector robots are playable, that's all we had in the UK, so I don't really have any nostalgia for Max Muscles and Bobby Bandana...
Haven't seen any of those stages where you'd run "into" the screen... have they been dropped?
Yeah I grew up with the arnold and Sylvester look-alikes, but I think Probotector is a great addition. It's part of the Contra series legacy. I use him in arcade mode.
The pixel art in the NES and SNES versions is the best; this one is not for me.
played the demo and wasn't very fond of it.
I love the modern take of contra with the overload mode, and I like the more forgiving easy mode because even with that I’m still having a hard time lol but enjoying this. Only thing is there is no reason it can’t be 60 fps but I am still enjoying the game
Don't you have it when the red falcon are still up to no good?!
Day 6 asking this question😅
Who won the OLED? The community awaits the name of the person who we should congratulate
Its too much for my wallet this year but this look good when discounted. 💵👍🏻
One for the wishlist to pickup when It gets a good sale price... played the demo it's OK but not worth full price
Excuse me, 18/20 for the music? The soundtrack couldn't possibly be any more generic, it's just filler cobbled together over a weekend with the odd recognisable cue inserted here and there.
Great that you actually reviewed this one , thanks for the review i think even with all the issues i will buy this one for the nostalgia jaja!
