The value you put in for the Thermal Resistance you entered it in as a "Total" resistance but the SolidWorks Manual of the same exact analysis has you enter it in as a Distributed Resistance. The unit for the value you put in is Kmsquared/Watts which is the units for the distributed thermal resistance. Total resistance has units of K/Watts.

If you wish to specify a thermal resistance between two bodies then you will need to define the contact in that way, manually. By default though the program assumes all contacting faces conduct to each other perfectly with no resistance. So, if you were to not define any contact sets for thermal resistance the study would still solve. It is recommended that if you know contact resistance between your bodies though that you enter it into the study setup.
Great question! This value is an assumed approximation based on a forced convection scenario (fan blowing on the chip and sink). This can often be a large source of error which is why we often recommend using a Fluid Dynamics code such as SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation to calculate this value from the surrounding fluid activity. Please check out a couple of our other webinars such as "SOLIDWORKS Thermal from beginning to end" or "SOLIDWORKS Thermal Stress from beginning to end" to see some comparisons to prescribing convection vs. calculating it.

Hi Alie 148, The thermal resistance contact defined in this video uses the contact area between the two parts, the thermal conductivity of the glue adhering the pieces together (no specified in this video), and a theoretical small thickness that the glue would be between the parts (not modeled or noted here). This all goes into the calculation of the value used in the contact in this video.
Great question! You’ll see in the left hand panel there are two options for how we apply thermal resistance - total or distributed. Total includes the surface area - I have worked with some clients who are testing to determine what their K/W should be before digging into what material they’ll actually purchase. In the case shown in the video, the Total thermal resistance calculation was done beforehand. Under distributed you’ll see as you mentioned: a per surface area selected unit type (K.m2/W).

Hi Bryce, For any analysis it is best that the boundaries applied in the analysis adhere as closely as possible to the real life analog that it is trying to represent. It is up to you as the analyst whether you wish to deviate from that and whether the induced error in results is acceptable for you.

Hi Pratheek, The heat transfer coefficient is difficult to choose. In reality it depends on temperature, air speed, fluid density, part geometry, and more factors. SOLIDWORKS has some wide-ranging estimations in the help menu: help.solidworks.com/2020/english/solidworks/cworks/c_convection.htm. Unfortunately there is not a value out there for Al-6061, because it is not a material specific property. Generally people use CFD - for SOLIDWORKS users this may be SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation - to simulate fluid flow and have the heat transfer coefficient automatically calculated for them. The greater the ‘h’ value, the greater the amount of heat transfer off the part, and the cooler the part. If you don’t have an idea of what you should pick, stick with one value and run comparative analyses - running various geometry designs to see which ends up the coolest. Alternatively, assume stagnant air. The SOLIDWORKS help guide provides an estimated value for stagnant air.

+14ognen hello. as far as I remember, all of my attempts to simulate an LED on a PCB gave me the only one result: my PC used all 16 GB of RAM and after 1 hour of useless similation I reboot it. So the question is still actual. How to correct simulate the situation when and LED or LEDs are installed on a AL PCB to know will it be averheated or it won't IRL. And it't better to gave an answer in a year than never :) Best regards.

There are however, validation problems included in SOLIDWORKS Simulation that verify the solutions calculated match known analytical solutions. So, there is that.

The way to animate a transient analysis like what is shown in this video is to first edit the thermal stress plot by right clicking it and then clicking “Edit Definition”. Then click the “Plot for Single Step” Button and press ok. This will turn your animation option on. Right click you thermal plot again and this time click on animate. Now you will be in the Animation command box where, after it loads up all your time steps, you can see the temperature changing in your model over time. Thank you for watching.

Darius Boteand, the 25W used here was completely arbitrary. SOLIDWORKS just chose a number that is reasonable for most microchips to show off how the software works. If you want an accurate heat power for the microchips in your real world electronics problem though. These heat power values are obtained purely through experimentation and research. Just contact the manufacturer of the microchip you are using, and ask them for the chips specifications. The heat power produced by any given microchip should be given in the specs for that specific chip. Or you could look the specific microchip up on the internet and sometimes find the information out that way. Thank you for your comment and watching.
Hi Javier, Typically the results of an FEA analysis are first validated for having converged to a solution based on the boundaries applied. This is done by repeating the analysis with successively smaller mesh element sizes to observe whether the results slow or stop changing with decreasing element size. Once that is done it might be time to create a prototype and execute laboratory testing on a real model. FEA reduces how many times you have to do this step but does not entirely remove it from the design process.

Did all that, but I get initial temperature errors when "running" then everything comes out in negative values.
