Our family just harvested chickens two weeks ago. My 13 and 11 year old sons helped with process. My 8 year old daughter didn't want to watch but she fed and watered them everyday for 12 weeks. My goal was to teach them husbandry between us and the land. We had fried chicken last night and they all were very proud to eat knowing the hard work they put in. They didn't leave any leftovers on their plate. I am very proud of my children especially in today's society! I like to let them watch homestead videos so they can see there are other children like them. I continue to bless you and your family!
Well done momma. My 10 yro old and 8 yro couldn't handle watching and thats ok. We let them know that we werent GLAD to kill our birds but we are trying to raise a healthier product for our family. They already notice a difference in egg quality. The kids helped w feeding them and cleaning cages as they were chicks. Its a process in time they may or may not develop comfort w but we wont force them to view that part. Im 42 it was MY 1st time butchering a live animal, i wasnt sure how I was going to react. 🙄
You don't harvest chickens as they are not fruits or vegetables...you have to kill them. Humans don't have the enzymes or colons to eat meat...we are fruitarian and not carnivorous...

An essential vitamin for life in humans is B12, which is obtained from meat, fish, eggs and dairy via a protein called intrinsic factor, that allows for its digestion. Look up "pernicious anemia" if you don't believe me. My grandfather died of it in 1924, before they knew what caused it.

Jess I scored a pair of Boggs at a nearby thrift store, $17. Brand new still in the box. The ladies who run the thrift store look at me like I had lost my mind I was jumping around and whooping and praising Jesus because they were my size. It's the little things in life LOL
I got my first daughter a pair of Boggs at a thrift store for $3! After the lasted so longed I looked them up and my mind was blown! They now have been passed down to my two younger daughters and they still look brand new :)
I grew up completely detached from the understanding of where my food came from until the day I met my husband and was taken on my first hunting trip! It is still the family joke that I cried the first time I saw a deer go down. Now after 16 years of marriage I will be joining him and so will my kids when they are old enough because it is so important for us to understand the reality of bringing that meat to the table. I also learned that most hunters and homesteaders alike, show so much honor for the life that is being sacrificed. That is what impressed me the most. I never thought to honor the life that was providing nutrition to my body before that experience. Oh and LOVE the socks!! LOL
I absolutely agree with you methods. It teaches you kids not only where their food comes from but it helps their common sense reasoning as well. I dont like when people hide things from kids, they are growing and it is important to help them form their intelligence instead of creating mindless zombies. Thank you!
Congrats on the deer. My husband just got back from the woods empty handed but we both plan on going this afternoon. I feel better when I know where our meat comes from. And nothing like sitting in the woods and watching what God created for you. Even if we do not see anything it is always a great time to talk to God and appreciate what he has given us. During deer season, or any season when we take an animal, we always have a moment of silence and give thanks for the animal we harvested. I love the way u explain it to your kids, my son is now 4 he has been on hunting trips since he was 10 months old, I was out hunting 8 months pregnant. I was raised on a deer farm in New Zealand and watched my father process our sheep for the freezer. I am grateful that I always knew where the meat on our plate came from and have been able to discuss it with my boys even though we cannot raise our own. We were always taught where our food came from. I could never kill the animal but I had no problem dressing it out. I think it makes us better people when we take responsibility for the food we eat. I loooove this! I used to be vegan and due to unforeseen life changes I went back to eating the typical American diet. Now, three years later, I am slowly but surely starting my homestead (a garden and ten Americana chickens while buying what I don't grow/raise from my local farmers market. I hope to be able to expand to have meat chickens and rabbits, dairy goats and a larger garden. I've been watching your channel daily since finding it and you are such an inspiration!
Jess, very well said about raising and consuming your own meat. Corporate farms/slaughter houses look at livestock as just a commodity, and do not appreciate the life taken. Thanks for making this video on being self sufficient. It is a much healthier life style for both your family, and livestock.

I agree with you about teaching kids the value of the food they eat. The difference between raising and hunting your own meat and vegetables. You know what went into raising them and what food they where feed. Growing up on a farm raining the meat we ate to the a lot of the vegetables we ate I learned the value of food and the work that goes into raining them. I like seeing packages opened. I can save a lot of shopping time because of it. I personally don't eat meat, but I do purchase ethically raised beef, chicken, lamb, pork and fish for my family and prepare it for them. I love the fact that you show your not so perfect pig house! We send our pigs and beef out to butcher. We do process our chickens. With everything going on at our farm it just makes sense to send them off. Time,packaging etc. plus we barter for it too. Kudos to you on teaching your kids where meat comes from.
That was so well said at the end. We are in the same boat with raising our own meat right now. Still getting it all set up but the goal is to never need an outside source for meat. Thank you for speaking up and being so honest. There is a huge disconnect in our culture right now in regards to food.

I like unboxings and mail calls, usually. If The person is always getting new and improved toys, not so much. As for the meat issue, I appreciate where you are coming from. People SHOULD realize that their meat came from a living creature. And that it should be respected and appreciated. I wish I had found a way to homestead when my now grown children were young so that they would have an appreciation for the foods they consume. Excellent point on raising meat. It’s putting your eating habits where your mouth is essentially. I hope to teach that to my son as he grows up and as I get to expand what I’m able to raise myself.

I was vegan for many years and my health deteriorated completely, although many people will state perhaps I didn't do it correctly (which I did, with supplements and all), it truly isnt our natural diet, as much as it may seem ethical, it isnt optimal... it did teach me to learn to know and respect where my food comes from and if i dont raise the animals myself, I buy local organic animal products, I feel healthy and happy knowing where my food come from. I hope when I have children someday to share this with them too :)
I have been a vegetarian since I was 12, because I wanted to be a farmer and read about conventional farming...and it broke my heart....so I stopped eating meat...now we raise our own.. and I feel so blessed my kids can grow up eating healthy, humanely raised food...good job mama!

I agree wholeheartedly with what you're teaching your kids. Fantastic! If you're going to eat meat you should really have a respect for that animal. Whether you raised it, or have to hunt it, you now have a relationship with that animal and respect for it. I believe that's one of the big reasons for the food issues we have.👍🙏

I process all the game my hubby and sons bring home. Deer and hogs. I like knowing that I took the utmost care to not waste anything and I know how it was handled. It's a good bit of work. If I had all the animals to care for that yall do, I'd probably send it out too.

Jess you are so wise beyond your years. The kids now don't know where there food comes from or even what it takes to get it to the table. Even my youngest daughter made a comment a few years back. That opened my eyes to what kids think about food. she really thought hamburgers where pretend meat. I can't wrap my head around that. I never remember a time when i didn't know this. It change the way I talk to my grand kids.

I come from a city I was city girl all the way and I was never taught to make the link of beef=cow but when your faced with people that hunt then you have to find where your beliefs are or you have to figure out how to teach your kids that the meat you eat was once alive so in using every possible part that animal has to offer you upon death the only thing you can do with the gift given is to use it and thank him for the gift of his life for yours . I was visiting my mom who lives around batesville and the first time I ever saw something butchered was a deer the neighbor had got one and I got to help with it it was a turning point for me as to the things I wanted to teach my kids about food life animals and the circle of it all. I love your show it has really inspired me to want to grow and learn more about homesteading really I just love to learn about everything . Anyway thank you for your inspiration

Thank you for making a stand. Although we aren't a farming family ( I married a city boy), I was raised on a farm and have raised our kids to value anything we eat. We are a consumer family for sure but are ethical consumers. It is possible to care for God's creation the way it was intended to be and still shop from the larger producers. I would love to homestead, but it's just not in the cards for us. So we focus on buying only meat and eggs that are labeled humanely raised - if we cannot find it - we simply do without. In summer, supporting local producers is a must but we're in Canada, so winters are another story. Anyway, it does my heart good with what you share, thank you!

We processed our first batch of meat birds three weeks ago. It was my first time dispatching an animal and my teen granddaughters first experience ever. I cried. They cried. I prayed over every bird and gave thanks for their sacrifice. My prayer is they will respect life and be mindful of where food comes from. Eating meat is a responsibility. A responsibility in ensuring the animals are raised ethically and with kindness and not wasting a smidge. I look forward to our next batch in the spring. I respect someone's right to not eat meat. I choose to eat meat and am convicted to my core to raise them right. Quail is next on my list so I look forward to your journey.

I am a vegetarian and when I talk to people about why, I explain it how you do. I am working towards getting my own farm and expressed to my family if they wish to eat meat that it's fine by me as long as we raise and do it our selves. I am against the wasting of an animal and the poor health of meat in stores. So I appreciate the way you explained it. And how you teach your children.

I loooove this! I used to be vegan and due to unforeseen life changes I went back to eating the typical American diet. Now, three years later, I am slowly but surely starting my homestead (a garden and ten Americana chickens while buying what I don't grow/raise from my local farmers market. I hope to be able to expand to have meat chickens and rabbits, dairy goats and a larger garden. I've been watching your channel daily since finding it and you are such an inspiration!
Jess, very well said about raising and consuming your own meat. Corporate farms/slaughter houses look at livestock as just a commodity, and do not appreciate the life taken. Thanks for making this video on being self sufficient. It is a much healthier life style for both your family, and livestock.

I agree with you about teaching kids the value of the food they eat. The difference between raising and hunting your own meat and vegetables. You know what went into raising them and what food they where feed. Growing up on a farm raining the meat we ate to the a lot of the vegetables we ate I learned the value of food and the work that goes into raining them. I like seeing packages opened. I can save a lot of shopping time because of it. I personally don't eat meat, but I do purchase ethically raised beef, chicken, lamb, pork and fish for my family and prepare it for them. What ever this was filmed with sure did make a sharp, well lighted film. Thanks for sharing!! 😊
I love the fact that you show your not so perfect pig house! We send our pigs and beef out to butcher. We do process our chickens. With everything going on at our farm it just makes sense to send them off. Time,packaging etc. plus we barter for it too. Kudos to you on teaching your kids where meat comes from.
That was so well said at the end. We are in the same boat with raising our own meat right now. Still getting it all set up but the goal is to never need an outside source for meat. Thank you for speaking up and being so honest. There is a huge disconnect in our culture right now in regards to food.

As for the meat issue, I appreciate where you are coming from. People SHOULD realize that their meat came from a living creature. And that it should be respected and appreciated. I wish I had found a way to homestead when my now grown children were young so that they would have an appreciation for the foods they consume. Excellent point on raising meat. It’s putting your eating habits where your mouth is essentially. I hope to teach that to my son as he grows up and as I get to expand what I’m able to raise myself.

I was vegan for many years and my health deteriorated completely, although many people will state perhaps I didn't do it correctly (which I did, with supplements and all), it truly isnt our natural diet, as much as it may seem ethical, it isnt optimal... it did teach me to learn to know and respect where my food comes from and if i dont raise the animals myself, I buy local organic animal products, I feel healthy and happy knowing where my food come from. I hope when I have children someday to share this with them too :)

I have been a vegetarian since I was 12, because I wanted to be a farmer and read about conventional farming...and it broke my heart....so I stopped eating meat...now we raise our own.. and I feel so blessed my kids can grow up eating healthy, humanely raised food...good job mama!

I agree wholeheartedly with what you're teaching your kids. Fantastic! If you're going to eat meat you should really have a respect for that animal. Whether you raised it, or have to hunt it, you now have a relationship with that animal and respect for it. I believe that's one of the big reasons for the food issues we have.👍🙏

I process all the game my hubby and sons bring home. Deer and hogs. I like knowing that I took the utmost care to not waste anything and I know how it was handled. It's a good bit of work. If I had all the animals to care for that yall do, I'd probably send it out too.

Jess you are so wise beyond your years. The kids now don't know where there food comes from or even what it takes to get it to the table. Even my youngest daughter made a comment a few years back. That opened my eyes to what kids think about food. she really thought hamburgers where pretend meat. I can't wrap my head around that. I never remember a time when i didn't know this. It change the way I talk to my grand kids.

I come from a city I was city girl all the way and I was never taught to make the link of beef=cow but when your faced with people that hunt then you have to find where your beliefs are or you have to figure out how to teach your kids that the meat you eat was once alive so in using every possible part that animal has to offer you upon death the only thing you can do with the gift given is to use it and thank him for the gift of his life for yours . I was visiting my mom who lives around batesville and the first time I ever saw something butchered was a deer the neighbor had got one and I got to help with it it was a turning point for me as to the things I wanted to teach my kids about food life animals and the circle of it all. I love your show it has really inspired me to want to grow and learn more about homesteading really I just love to learn about everything . Anyway thank you for your inspiration

Thank you for making a stand. Although we aren't a farming family ( I married a city boy), I was raised on a farm and have raised our kids to value anything we eat. We are a consumer family for sure but are ethical consumers. It is possible to care for God's creation the way it was intended to be and still shop from the larger producers. I would love to homestead, but it's just not in the cards for us. So we focus on buying only meat and eggs that are labeled humanely raised - if we cannot find it - we simply do without. In summer, supporting local producers is a must but we're in Canada, so winters are another story. Anyway, it does my heart good with what you share, thank you!

We processed our first batch of meat birds three weeks ago. It was my first time dispatching an animal and my teen granddaughters first experience ever. I cried. They cried. I prayed over every bird and gave thanks for their sacrifice. My prayer is they will respect life and be mindful of where food comes from. Eating meat is a responsibility. A responsibility in ensuring the animals are raised ethically and with kindness and not wasting a smidge. I look forward to our next batch in the spring. I respect someone's right to not eat meat. I choose to eat meat and am convicted to my core to raise them right. Quail is next on my list so I look forward to your journey.

I am a vegetarian and when I talk to people about why, I explain it how you do. I am working towards getting my own farm and expressed to my family if they wish to eat meat that it's fine by me as long as we raise and do it our selves. I am against the wasting of an animal and the poor health of meat in stores. So I appreciate the way you explained it. And how you teach your children.
