i think about this a lot because i’m also a huge peart fan on top of being a fan of more modern drummers like this, matt garstka, etc. i think what you have to take into account with neil peart is that he was the CREATOR of many techniques and impacted the course of music (more specifically rock/prog). on top of that he was the writer and composer for all of rushes music which is insane by itself. also, the internet’s takeover of modern life put a rocket booster on the like general skill of people because it made information and resources so readily available. people like neil peart and steve gadd had to try a lot harder to find teachers and resources.
I love Navene's playing, Animosity were my fave band for a looooong time

I just love Navene's style. He's got everything. He can blast, he can groove, he shreds like a manic and writes super interesting parts.

This man really has incredible endurance! Getting every hit timed right in blistering fast changes in feel and groove is really respectable.

I play drums in a blues/rock band and I will never reach the stage where I am playing anything close to what is in this video, which is fine for a 54 year old. That said, I am a total sucker when any drummer throws in syncopated ride cymbal accents in the verse with the main pattern on the hihat. 00:51 is where I heard it. I now have something to take to our next gig / rehearsal! Thank you from North Liberty, IA! You brightened my heart with your drumming!

I'm usually not a fan of this style of drumming, but Navene is one of the few drummers that plays SO cleanly and with such energy that he makes it sound great

Hard to say a drummer is "too good" for Animals As Leaders but let's just say I'm glad AAL got Gartska and Navene is thriving in his stuff.
There are fans of his that aren't of AAL, and vice versa. It's a preference bias shit. Writes someone fanatic of AAL

Out of curiosity, what pedals and shoes are those? Never seen them before.
The pedals look like Axis Longboards and his IG says this about the shoes: -figure out footwear! I noticed that I was better at the technique without shoes on so I ordered these ‘barefoot’ shoes off of Amazon for $20.

Half the community here just loves to gatekeep drummers. If i had a dollar for every time i read some dumb comment about how most metal drummers couldn't play a basic jazz bar, I'd be incredibly rich. Drum snobs are so obnoxious. For these people drums are black n' white, nuance is lost, and everything is a comparison. Funny enough, it's almost always people who just don't like the music, so they feel the need to tear down their fellow drummers. Over grown children, really. No body gets to this level without being able to learn/play a basic jazz shuffle. Most men it seem just need something to focus on so they can cope with their own lack of fame.
In my experience, the type of people who see drumming (or music in general) as a binary good/bad thing also do that with pretty much everything else in their lives, for the same reasons. "Stop liking what I don't like!!!"
unpopular opinion: Blast beats are not heavy. Even guys at this skill level cant hit the snare hard enough for it to sound heavy. Every time he switches to quarter notes, it's much heavier.
I mean that’s a fact. Blasts are contrast to the heavy parts.
