Wow absolutely stunning. I remember that only about a year back (?) you said in one of your videos that it was your plan to start drawing big paintings next year.I think that you said you wanted to paint five paintings? And look where you are now!! You have a solo show coming up with mostly large paintings. Christina, this is absolutely impressive and you can be so proud of yourself. 😮❤❤❤
Thanks Annek! Yeah, I saw a friend's show full of large paintings and I loved the impact they had. I thought to myself, if he can do it, so can I! Super happy with how they turned out, and I'm glad you like them too! ❤
Christina you are an inspiration as always. I have no idea how you manage to keep going and pull off yet another exhibition....I suspect you must not sleep much! Good luck for the exhibition.
Niiiice Pence Gallery in my home town congrats! Awesome I will have to get back to Davis and check them out, I was also in the Pence gallery in 2022, I think. Again congrats!
You are a favorite artist to watch. Congratulations on your first solo show. I live on the other side of the country, so I will appreciate your virtual tour! Thank you for keeping to your own style and showing us how you work.
Congrats on the show. All the pieces you showed looked great. I really like seeing the larger works. So what was the biggest challenge of scaling up your work, other than just painting time. Did doing larger work change how you composed your paintings?
Thanks so much, Doug! And great question. I'll elaborate on this more in future videos, but the main thing was that I started adding an intermediate stage where I cover the whole canvas in thinned-down color for each major shape at the beginning to get a sense of how the color shapes work together as a whole. That, and I feel like with my larger paintings I'm stuck in the "messy middle" for much longer. It's a bit of a mind game, and I must remain faithful that it will work out in the end!
Just even seeing a few of these paintings here is making me really want to paint because in those paintings i realize you and i see the world in quite a similar way at least in certain ways. as far as perspective and composition goes, i think our eyes are close in that way. This makes me think that i should really pick up that brush. You really are amazing at what you do. You deserve all the good that comes to you. i myself want to do realism, but i keep finding myself drawn to your impressionism. I hope this show goes amazingly well. I wish I could go.
Congratulations on your first solo show :) I love your work, and find your videos insightful and inspiring. I'm so happy to see the dates of your show align with when I'll be in Vacaville visiting my sister (a short drive from Davis). I plan to visit the gallery then, and am excited to be able to see some of your paintings up close!
You can dry oil faster with a heat gun or use liquin instead of oil as a thinner. But heat gun definitely helps speed things up if you don’t want to use alkyds. Just be careful it can actually make paper catch fire of held there long enough haha
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it! I hope it gave you some inspiration. If you are having trouble getting started, I always recommend starting with something low-pressure, like a super small quick sketch of an object around you. Hope it helps!
@@christinakentart Thank you for your thoughts! I am trying exactly that. I worked in advertising for over 33 years of my life, and suffered more than a little burn out, before being let go during the recession of 2007/2008. Maybe 2025 will be a defining year for me. Happy New Year to you!
Wow!! Davis!! I remember a fateful trip I took to the Sac area back in 1987. I was job-hunting there, waiting to hear back from a few prospects, and staying on couches in Sac, Davis and Dixon. I'd be willing to bet I walked down that same street where your gallery is now. Great video of your process. Your exhibit pics remind me of Hopper, minus the trademarked Hopper bleakness. Your human subjects look pretty engaged with one another, and your colors and contrasts really pop!
Sorry if you answered these questions elsewhere. If you were self taught, how many years had you been painting before you did a solo show? How did you select your theme, was it more from the gallery side or your vision? Did you write in a proposal?
Great questions! I'd like to make a video with more in-depth explanation, but here are the quick answers: 1) I've been painting for 15 years, but most of those were off-and-on. In 2020 I began to take my painting much more seriously, painting every day, selling, etc, and it was in 2023 that I got the solo show. 2) I worked with the gallery to select a theme that was in line with my current body of work, so it was mostly my vision, but they gave me some guidance as well. 3) I didn't write a proposal, however the gallery had an open call for their annual Emerging Artist Award, and I applied to that with my artist statement. I won the award and with that they gave me a solo show.
@@christinakentart Wow, 15 years! I've only been painting for two. I have yet to feel good enough or find my style. Looks like I have a long way to go! I enjoy your videos a lot. Thanks.
Yes ! Have a series I am working on with a theme of forest stewardship!
That's amazing, I love the idea of a forest stewardship series! Happy painting!
We're so impressed with the amount and quality of work!
Thank you! :)

Congratulations!! You've made beautiful large paintings. You're right about how framing can be expensive😮
Thank you! And yeah, it's a struggle haha

Thank you! Yeah it's kind of an obsession haha
I like these figurative paintings a lot! Good work!

Oh interesting, I haven't heard that before about the heat gun! Maybe I'll try that (carefully) the next time I'm in a pinch...
These are stunning! Incredible job!
Thank you!
I also hate painting the sides of the canvas. These paintings are absolutely stunning, good luck with your show!
Yeah I feel you!! Thanks :)
Wow, congrats, Christina. What a beautiful show it’s going to be.
Thanks Maura! :)
Beautiful work! Really enjoyed watching you work. I'm currently trying to get the motivation to paint again!

Oh, I bet so! The gallery has been around since 1975, although the building has changed over time. And thank you!

american style pictures
what do you do with all of them later?
Thank you! I sold over half the paintings during the show and have continued to sell the remaining paintings over the past few months.
