  • Vandal Hearts II is a Sony PlayStation Tactical Roleplaying Game (TRPG), or SRPG, that was developed by Konami and released in 1999 in Japan and the Americas, and 2000 in PAL territories.
The game features a heavy, politically driven narrative that tells the tale of a bunch of kids dragged into a war that spans the entire continent as three nations struggle to dominate and rein over the entire landmass. We play as Joshua, a child from the village of Polata who is unremarkable, other than being the foster son of the village Mayor. When he unknowingly comes into contact with a declared war criminal, he is set on a trajectory that changes his life forever.
With a unique battle system that changed the way the previous game, or other contemporaries at the time, played. Is Vandal Hearts II worth checking out today? Watch my video to find out.

Nice that this game receives a proper review given how VH2 is always overlooked due to being so different from it's predecessor in terms of story and gameplay.
I never expected the story to be so dark and gritty and the villains to be so evil yet given depth to their actions (except Mohosa who's just a depraved homosexual creep), it makes Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem 4 look like a light-hearted tale. Still, VH2' story leans to omuch on the overarching story to the point your characters who aren't Joshua and Adele aren't as memorable as both VH1 and the mentioned games.
The gameplay threw me off at first but eventually I love it and wished it was given a chance to be polished properly.
I'd suggest you review Brigandine: The Legend of Forsena and Brigandine: Grand Edition, an updated version of the game that's japan-only but has an english patch. It's an excellent turn-based rpg that combines the gameplay of Fire Emblem(class change and rock-paper-scissors types), Langrisser(You control a leader who commands units) and Advance Wars(Each expendable unit have different strengths, weakeness and roles on the battlefield and you need decide if purchasing it will be worth it) and a rather underrated plot that changes depending on which country you play as because each has their own different philosophy that drives their conquest of the continent.

Thanks for the review, I enjoyed it more than playing the game! I played and completed it as a teenager as well. I found the soundtrack particularly unengaging and the gameplay and art style ok at best. Graphics look better than I remember. It actually put me off TRPGs for years. I have the first one in my backlog which seems to be well regarded so lookjng forward to playing that at some point.

The first one is a great game, but I also really liked this one, coming back to it. I liked that the musical motifs of some tracks echoed those that were experienced in the first game, and also that some of the bonus maps had tracks that were remasters of some of the original game's tracks. Understand that the game isn't for everyone - though I was in your position and didn't like the game initially when I played it when I was around 16. I enjoyed it much more on my recent playthrough. If you have time in your back log, I'd say it's worth revisiting.

Was thinking the same thing when I was playing through XVI. Maybe CBUIII got name inspiration from this game. I would have cottoned on so fast is Jill was named Adele. Haha

For those who are trying the game for the first time, the gameplay wont be like any other tactical rpg you have played, and may get frustrated,
This game wants you to predict which enemy goes first and where they position, if you can understand the concept, it's very satisfying to outsmart the enemies.
my second favorite game of all time behind Xenogears.
insane story plot, One of the most memorable OST, and a very fun battle system
for those who played Part 1, unfortunately, the sound effect and blood geyser is a huge downgrade on this
Sorry to point this out but theres definitely some spoilers in this video for those who didnt finish the game yet, I would just listen instead.
I hope you all give this game a try!

VH2 was a real downgrade from VH1. The original had distinctive spritework, better art design, and mission variety. The sequel was a serious slog through laborious cutscenes and repetitive missions. The characters are bland, the portraits are damn ugly, and the new battle system sucked.

One of my biggest gaming disappointments...I played the first and loved it and when I saw the cover art for vh2 I thought it would be great but I was so wrong. Vh2 is the worst strategy game of all time imo. The guesswork involved in the dual movement system is the antithesis of strategy. Great video as always though Ven

gotta disagree my good sir. One of the greatest tactics games i've ever played. Once you wrap your head around how the combat works. how far in did you happen to get?

@LukesGamerRoom I beat it. I basically hate the game but turn based srpg is my favorite genre so I did finish it. It was incredibly easy because the ai is broken for about 95% of the game. Since a back attack is the most effective attack the ai always goes for that, so almost every single turn I moved whatever character that I was controlling 2 steps backwards and attacked and then I would get the backstab because the enemy was trying to use the squares directly behind me for its own backstab...sorry if that sounds confusing but it should make sense to anyone that played vh2. So yeah for 95% of the game I used the exact same move and attack pattern and 95% of the time it worked. I'm curious as to why you like the game?

@@dickmonddickelheimer9452 I get it, though I would ask how you were able to correctly figure out which enemy was attacking every time to ensure this outcome? I certainly didn’t find that cheesing strategy but to be honest every time I baited and enemy and got a successful attack it was immensely satisfying especially given the novelty of the combat system but I can get it if that level of predictability got tired. Personally I loved it and found it a refreshing change of pace for a genre that has little ways in genuine gameplay innovation. And having played it so soon after 1 felt it also addressed a lot of the misgivings of its successor while wrapping it with such unique combat. I have a video on it too if your interested in more thoughts bud. Any fan of tactics games is a man of good taste in my esteem. Regardless of this game lol

@@dickmonddickelheimer9452 , that mostly works in the normal mode. But advanced mode has a different ai, making most battles harder to play with that tactic.
