  • It's late in the summer (August, 18th) and Jen and I have been patiently waiting for the snow to melt so we can attempt a scramble run on Hibox mountain in the Wenatchee National Forest / Alpine Lakes Wilderness.
    We start out at Rachel Lake trail head and make our way to a boot path where we begin our rapid climb to a class three scramble on the summit block.

    Nick and Jen, Thanks for another fine video. Your stamina and endurance are remarkable, bravo. I can see you make a lot of extra effort to vary the shots and the camera angles. When I see a clip of you two walking by on the trail, I think of all you had to do to set up the camera, backtrack on the trail, walk in front of the camera, come back, pick up the camera and then hike on. I would be too impatient to just get up the trail. You make all the extra effort just for people to enjoy your journey. You both deserve a lot of credit. Thank you!

      Thank you John. I've found that lately I haven't done enough of the run up and plant the camera because I think we are a bit too caught up in the moment as well. Hopefully I can get back to that this season and see if Jen's patience will hold tight. ;)

    You continually surprise and delight with gems like this, showing the fantastic variety of hiking in the PNW :-)
    Also, I agree with some other comments - I'm really impressed with your ability to scramble and capture high quality footage at the same time!

      Thank you Hywel! Filming the climbing is definitely the most difficult part. Sometimes I have to put the camera away when it get too technical. But I'd rather stay safe than film my own demise. :)

    I remember when you saw a fox back in El Chaltén, and now this mountain goat. These are rare footages. I wonder how amazing is to share this spectacular landscapes with his hosts in it. Congratulations !

      Always feel blessed when we get to cross paths with wild animals. As long as they are not considering us for food. :)

    Great job guys. Nick your left arm must be hella strong. Once again not easy doing a scramble and holding a camera at the same time. Thumbs up on this one...lol

      It definitely adds a level of complexity that's for sure! I tried wearing the camera on my head, and on my backpack, but it's a bit shaky and not always what I want to be filming. However, when we get to more technical climbing, I will probably have to put the camera back on my head. :)

    Very cool climb and very awesome views . I wonder what the mountain goat thought about you guys sneaking up on his happy nappy spot lol.

    I love these steep scramble hikes you do. Glad you found time to post this one. Too much exposure for this old guy, but a wonderful vicarious pleasure.

      We've got a few more tricks up our sleeves from last year's season, so stay tuned for that. I'll be leaking them in between our current hikes until I am caught up.

    Was the trail difficult to follow?? Impressive hike guys! Keep up the great content as usual!! Happy trails! :)

      Thank you! I think the only tricky part is when you reach the summit block and you need to go around it to the south east side. Other than that, the boot path is pretty well defined.

    Good to use Jen as a probe ahead of you going up the slope...great view...nice and jagged around there. What made the mountain goat a rogue?...was it her attitude?

    • @OutsideAndStuff
      @OutsideAndStuff  7 років тому

      Usually when you see one goat, there are quite a few more. So it was kind of surprising to see this one just pop up out of nowhere. :)

      Thank you. :) I am about to give up trying to name them correctly. I have dyslexia and those two are always throwing me for a loop. I need some mnemonic to help me remember. :(

    Impressive camera work! The goat was cool at the end. Do you ever see bears?

      We've only seen some bears in the Olympics and they tend to keep their distance.

    what a climb. how would you deal with going down? I wouldn't even know where to begin.

    • @OutsideAndStuff
      @OutsideAndStuff  7 років тому

      Same as going up, but in reverse. :) But seriously, this scramble required a little bit of being comfortable downclimbing facing inward.

      About two miles in. It's really hard to see as it's a very faint boot trail in the forest.

      Would love to get back to Lake Blanca at some point. Here's the photos I took from several years back to hold you over. nickbotner.com/2013/09/hiking-washington-lake-blanca-wild-sky-wilderness/

      Outside & Stuff cool pictures. I'm a bigger dude and have started getting healthier and hiking since January. Your videos are very informative for me and it helps to know what to expect on the trails since my bones are carrying my weight plus whatever I'm carrying. I'm planning on Blanca lake...lake Blanca, whatever your choice of phrasing is, sometime this summer. Seen a lot of pretty videos on it, but the way you guys make yours is the bees knees.
      I'm starting to do harder hikes. Just recently did lake serene and that was fun. Do you guys have other social media like instagram?

    • @OutsideAndStuff
      @OutsideAndStuff  7 років тому +1

      Glad to hear the videos are of help! :D I will caution that the beginning of Blanca is switchback hell. Lots of people do the hike, just plan to burn some calories right off the bat. :)
      I post some of my more polished photos over on my instagram: instagram.com/nickbotner/

      Yeah I've read a lot of trip reports on it and I'm willing to suffer to get those views. It's too bad the roads washed out and adds 4 miles.
      And I started following you on instagram so thanks for the info.

      Good on you for hitting those trails. I'm also a heavier fella, and have been hiking the PNW for 12 years. It's damn tough at times, but always worth it. The mountains call for all of us to go, not just the uber fit.

    I must commend you on the tasteful way your films are done. In so many of the videos, especially the Sailboat ones, girls are in tiny bikinis and the guys are leering. Thank you.
