  • The United States had easily won this at the 1987 Pan Pacs over China, but that was the B race since the East German swimmers were not there. East Germany was not the defending Olympic champion, only because they joined the 1984 boycott, but they were the world record holders, had won the 1986 World Championships by a huge margin over the USA, and had won the last six European Championships. Kristin Otto opened for the GDR with a 55.11, leading American Mary Wayte by 0.77 seconds. Katrin Meißner then moved ahead by 1.72 seconds at the 200 metre mark and the rout race was over but the rout was on. On the third leg it was more of same for East Germany, but although well back, the Netherlands closed on the United States, as Conny van Bentum brought the margin for silver to only 8/100ths at the anchor exchange. On the final leg, Karen Brienesse swam the eighth fastest 100 relay split ever, 55.04, to bring the Netherlands home for the silver medal, with the United States trailing for third as China placed fourth. Van Bentum commented, “We thought we would be battling for third with China. We were really, really excited that we got second.” The East Germans missed their world record by 6/100ths.

They should test all the frozen samples from the past! Testing is way more advanced now! There be a hell of a lot of gold medals handed back! Lol

The list might possibly include Mark Spitz, Rowdy Gaines, Janet Evans and Michael Phelps, lol! Gasp, how dare I question wholesome, all American icons?
The US women's 4x100 from 1976 "rose" to the occasion or the GDR just forgot their juice?
How about the Netherlands here who surpassed the US, were they juiced, lol?

Les nageuses est-allemandes étaient beaucoup mieux préparées. Leur système d'entrainement était le plus perfectionné au monde.
Sur les aspects de dopage, tous étaient dopés alors l'explication ne vient pas sur ce point.

Whats interesting is how bad the US changeovers are, especially the first and second. The team lost about a full meter in each. Maybe the main reason they lost the silver here, which was clearly underperforming.

Yeah, all of East German swimmers are as announcer said 'big, powerful, very strong" and by looking at the lead between US swimmers, it raises a serious question.

There really isn't any question here. The East German women were on the juice since the 70's and as far as i'm concerned Otto and all East German female swimmers should be stripped of every medal they won since 1976.

Yep. They were juiced. Unfortunately, the statute of limitations passed. Ironically, I was watching a documentary on the 40th anniversary of the US beating the East Germans in the 4X100 in Montreal and Shirley Bababshoff, who was one of the main people who accused the East Germans of doping, ironically came to their defense. She pretty much said that those girls were pretty much the victims of abuse and it wasn't their fault that their government doped them.

The Last Gold? You could see the differences between the US Team and the GDR Team back in 76, all the way up until 88. Nearly all of the GDR girls looked the same, and for FINA not to see it was crime, not only with the US Women, but also other Women around the World competing against East Germany. I was only 10 at the time the 1976 Summer Olympic Games were held in Montreal, and while both teams/women were affected by the Steroid Scandal, I felt sorry for both US/GDR women. Being from Illinois, I felt sorry for Marcia Morey, and the tears that she shed saying it meant everything being on that US Swim Team, when she did not swim well enough to get into the final of the 100m Breast. Then, the story of the GDR girls who noticed the changes in their bodies, when they were being injected with shots/pills, and told by GDR Team Doctors that it was vitamins. Just a sad situation for all involved.

People always criticize GDR champions and their state sponsored program. However, the USA swimmers also look questionable. For instance, Jill Sterkel, Angel Martino and Katie Ledicky. If you want to point fingers and denounce what occurred, do it with everyone. I even have my suspicions about Janet Evans' "rapid recovery windmill stroke" and Shirley Babashoff's 1976 Olympic accusations when she was looking rather "muscular and masculine" herself.

The East German women trained much more and much harder than their colleagues in the west. And a victory was much more prestigues in those socialist states.
You can't blame it all on doping that they were so successful. That would be too easy. Especially East Germany had good swimmers, e.g. Roland Matthes.
