its such an odd plane and i love it!
Yak-38 had two (Harrier like) nozles on the back and two small separate jet engines in the front. Idea from Convair Model 200 concept. Which was later fully adopted by Yak-141.

It was without a doubt more dedicated to ground attack, and its role as a fighter is already questionable by the additional mass resulting in a higher wing loading during horizontal flight.
Of course a pilot could go full Slav, shunt it into vtol mode and squat close to a shoreline to take a good shot at an enemy fighter passing by, but it still doesn’t make out as well as the Harrier did.

That was the Yak 141, not the 38.
The Harrier P.1154: design 1961.
NATO knew about the supersonic aircraft and that Yak looks identical to the Harrier P.1127: (Kestrel) 1960 that many NATO nations bought as they liked it

Красиво конечно . На то время просто СУПЕР . С ЯК- 38 многие учились , многое переняли . Но сам по себе самолет для боевых действий был мало пригоден , малоэфективен .

Як-38 создавался для океанского флота ВМФ СССР, уже был готов прототип дальнейшего развития ЯК-141,но при Ельцине океанский флот стал не нужен,а дальше всё стали отдавать территориями.

U.S. weapons manufacturer Lockheed Martin offered to jointly cooperate with the Yakovlev design Bureau (developer of the Yak-141). The arrangement ended after one year, but was a landmark as it was the first instance of military-technical cooperation between the former irreconcilable enemies.
Lockheed Martin acquired all the technical documentation of the Yak-141 from the Yakovlev Bureau.
Shortly after that, a prototype of a carrier-based VTOL fighter, which would be known later as F-35B was unveiled in the United States. It looked surprisingly similar to the Soviet Yak-141.

Technically, the US “copied” the Yak-141 Freestyle for the X/F-35. Lockheed and Yakolev entered a partnership in 1991 to help developer the 141, and Lockheed learned a considerable amount of information on how to develop a VTOL fighter. So in a way, the Yak-141/41M is the father of the F-35

It wasn’t until the 1980s that the US stuck their hands into it and McDonell Douglass then Boeing developed the AV-8B Harrier II and across the pond, the British Aerospace Harrier II

Look I appreciate the technology of the Yak 38 shame it didn't serve long because of its lack of true ability but it is not the F-35 Daddy. The Harrier was around long before the Yak and...and I have the paternity tests to prove it.
The F 35 combines the frontal Liftfan idea from the Harrier with the rear downward moving exhaust of the Yak 141, with the Stealth tech of Lockheed.

@@divinesan7786 The F-35 didn't come from this, it has more of it's roots dug into the F-22 than the Yak-141 or Yak-38. If anything, these fighters have more American roots, considering they use a 3BSD design that was patent by Pratt & Whitney.

1995 and it's more deadly and more reliable than the F-35 the most expensive military design failure in history.
the project cost more than the Apollo Moon shot then the Manhattan project that developed the atomic weapon and it's still is a out-of-date design which suffers critical failures every time it flies, go USA
The Yak 38 was far more deadly than the F 35, to the pilots flying it. One third of those planes were lost in accidents. That is huge even for VTOL standards.
