MAKS 2013 - MiG-29 OVT crazy maneuverability! [Remastered] - HD 50fps

- Well, here goes another old pearl that I wanted to re-upload with better video rendering quality and edition processing.
This is without any kind of doubt the most radical flying routine performed with a fighter jet that I have ever witnessed in person. And of course, the pilot at the controls is no other than MiG legendary test pilot Mikhail Belyaev (Михаил Беляев)!
I recently received some comments on my channel saying that the SU-35S is the most aerobatic flying machine out there but honestly, the MiG-29OVT with thrust vectoring nozzles is at the very least, up-to-par with it. Of course that's just a single prototype and didn't enter service but I imagine that a MiG-35 with Thrust Vector Control would be just as mind-boggling and 'UFO' - 'physics-defying' beast as some like to point :)
The Mikoyan MiG-29 (Микоян МиГ-29; NATO reporting name: Fulcrum) is a twin-engine jet fighter aircraft designed in the Soviet Union. Developed by the Mikoyan and Gurevich design bureau as an air superiority fighter during the 1970s, the MiG-29, along with the larger Sukhoi Su-27, was developed to counter new American fighters such as the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, and the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon. The MiG-29 entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1982.
While originally oriented towards combat against any enemy aircraft, many MiG-29s have been furnished as multirole fighters capable of performing a number of different operations, and are commonly outfitted to use a range of air-to-surface armaments and precision munitions. The MiG-29 has been manufactured in several major variants, including the multirole Mikoyan MiG-29M and the navalised Mikoyan MiG-29K; the most advanced member of the family to date is the Mikoyan MiG-35. Later models frequently feature improved engines, glass cockpits with HOTAS-compatible flight controls, modern radar and IRST sensors, and considerably increased fuel capacity; some aircraft have also been equipped for aerial refuelling.
Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the militaries of a number of former Soviet republics have continued to operate the MiG-29, the largest of which is the Russian Air Force. The MiG-29 has also been a popular export aircraft; more than 30 nations either operate or have operated the aircraft to date, India being one of the largest export operators of the type. As of 2018, the MiG-29 is in production by Mikoyan, a subsidiary of United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) since 2006.
The MiG-29 OVT prototype version is one of the six pre-built MiG-29Ms before 1991 that later received thrust vectoring engines and fly-by-wire technology. It served as a thrust-vectoring engine testbed and technology demonstrator in various air shows to show future improvement in the MiG-29M. It has identical avionics to the MiG-29M. The only difference in the cockpit layout is an additional switch to turn on vector thrust function. The two RD-133 thrust-vectoring engines, each features unique 3D rotating nozzles which can provide thrust vector deflection in all directions. However, despite its thrust-vectoring, other specifications were not officially emphasized. The aircraft has been demonstrated along with the MiG-29M2 in various air shows around the world for potential export. The aircraft is usually used as an aerobatic demonstrator.

Man do I hate people comparing this to a raptor or new gen planes, this is the one of the best planes for pilots to fly and have fun, and leave us stunned and jaw dropped with achievements of engineering and flying. I do not want to see this plane in a fight, I wana see it doing stuff like this, just as ww2 planes
There's a way of thinking to live by! :)
Agreed!
Well, raptor is cr@p, and US is cr@p. Just being awfully honest.
@@fade812
The Raptor is finally being retired. It was a stillborn fighter, obsolete at birth. Cancelled twice before production, it was a political football. I like your comparison to WWII, these super maneuverable fighters are still being designed to WWI-WWII requirements. Its one of the most bizarre examples of Cargo Cult behavior in my lifetime. Has anyone told these designers we can find targets at night, today? There hasn’t been a day war since Vietnam.
@@FFE-js2zp never wanted it to exist. You guys already know what i think of America. Spends all tax money on the military, but Healthcare doesn't matter to them, and neither does education, except the military part. Also is involved in waaaay too many wars, and could never prove that al Qaida is responsible for 9/11.
One of the best performances I have ever seen!
He did cobra maneuver with this Mig 29 even better than SU 35!
Amazing!
Yup! Such a pitty that they didn't bring it up for MAKS 2017... :'(
Maybe next year?
This was actually a MiG OVT, I'm not an expert at this, but I think this plane has thrust vector control, which means the thrusters can move in different directions, so the "push" of the burned fuel is coming out of the plane diagonal, this moves the angle of weight on the plane and incredible stunts are possible.
malaysian pilot doing that to in singapore air show with su30m
One of the most beautiful and capable planes ever built.
Yup :)
Russians have perfected the aero dynamics , they challenge the physics with there awesome designes (mikoyan and sukhoi) .. just see how they fly in sky ,it's a treat to watch and hats off to the pilots who perform these aerobatics...love from india
It's the thrust vectoring
Maybe but their sensors are far less better than F22/F35.
The US spent trillions on sensor technology.
Fire and forget basically.
The Migs are beautiful pieces of engineering, but lack the tech to make them effective against its counter parts..
@@deanhardy7051 basically this constantly stated by somebody, but has never been confirmed in reality. All we have in fact - are repeatedly demonstrated extraordinary flight ability of MIG and SU against repeatedly claims of some F sensors theoretical superiority.
@@Alexander-AAA agreed.
@@deanhardy7051 love the insecurity caused when someone praises russian technology. its suppoes to scare ya defnitely. makes people talk about american counterparts even though theyre not in the conversation
In some moments it's looks like RC plane!!!
Amazing!
Thanks Airguardian!
I love the OVT displays!
It never disappoints :D
When they fly the cobra at a certain point the plane is actually flying backwards in controlled flight
yes, it seems to be 3D flying with propeller driven r/c modelling aircraft...
But sounds
We badly needed this aircraft. It's beautiful.
another brilliant vid airguardian and lets all acknowledge the pilot a true master of his craft that is airmanship amazing
Thank you!
Belyaev is indeed a master pilot!
I wish they let him fly the MiG-29OVT more instead of the MiG-35 on the airshow... but they need to sell so... :'(

How's your video going BTW? :)
Airguardian still work in progress...i do it more for fun so i spit out once in a blue moon. Should be done soon. Between work and life lol but that's why i have yours to watch.

Такое впечатление что законы физики куда-то подевались… Великолепно! Восторг! Ура Михаилу Беляеву!!!
Another GREAT video of amazing plane!
Keep up the GREAT work! 👍✌️
Thank you Igor! :)
Pilot mikhail gone totally nuts 🔥🔥🔥
I'd go mad too, if I could fly one of those, mwahahaha! :D
I use to execute these manneuvers perfectly with my cropduster, of course I was six and my plane was a plastic Dusty Crop Hopper. Just saying...
Hahahahaha!
Min 1:45 is amazing and 2:52 then the legendary Pugachev's cobra.
The beauty of thrust vectoring!
breathtaking
Very nice description and story 👍🏼 👍🏼
Like one Russian pilot said, we try to break our planes and if they do we know what needs fixing, lol. 😂
xD
Pilot spent in gasoline for this run the same amount I spend in 3 years with my car LOL :D
Probably even more!

So, the Mig-29 is smaller and more then likely lighter then a Suhkoi heavy fighter, I'm just wondering if the OVT variant would give the Mig-29 similar maneuverability characteristics.
Aye, yes to all.
But I am confused about your last sentence... the OVT is a MiG-29 prototype variant. :/
@@Airguardian Most SU aircraft under the russian airforce are thrust vectored other then the SU-33, and Im aware Mig-29s before the ovt didn't have vectoring nozzles. My last sentence is comparing a SU-30MKI's maneuverability to the Mig-29 ovt or even the Mig-29M. Mig may not have fly by wire but the vectoring nozzles and it over all being much smaller and lighter may give them both similar handling ina combat turn.
Imagine this: thrust vectoring+split throttles for yaw control instead of a rudder for tailless aircraft like the b2 or the b21 instead of those weird ruddervators or whatever they call them
Could be done, but yaw control through differential thrust would inherently be less accurate than through an aerodynamic control surface. Engines take their time to spool up/down.
Im sure some American pilots think “damn why i was not born in Russia” sorry guys i know y can not admit but i know deep down y wish....because i wish i was Russian very often. Anyways dont want to upset anyone but those guys are on different level
Not really wishing I was Russian but would love to have those jets flying aerobatics around here! ;)
AWESOME!!!
)))
The Fulcrum it's good, but the Flanker (SU 35) it's slower and better for aerobatic...// Both are Beautyful 💗
Hammer!
So now I know why we have these in service ..A good pilot can make this machine invincible
Well, mind this one had thrust vectoring nozzles installed... your average MiG-29 doesn't! ;)
@@Airguardian guess what .. we shot down f16 with mig 21 without vectoring .. and even if we have we don’t show it off in air shows
Incredible👍
+1

True.
I have got to get to this show
Next one on 2021! ;)
Anybody knows why they didn't add thrust vectoring to the current MiG-29 and MiG-35 in service???
This has independent TVS in each nosal, being even more maneuverable than the SU30-35!
Correct! But there is only one prototype sadly.
@@Airguardian great video! One question: why the Mig 35 can't fly with that maneuverability if the Mig 35 is more modern? I can't understand why OVT can do the cobra maneuver (for example) and the Mig 35 can not...thanks for everything !!
@@francorenatocampanavalderr2109 The Mig-35 features new engines that are more powerful and efficient but do not feature TV nozzles ( I assume they made that to make a cheaper aircraft as the Russian Air Force already has many TV aircraft in their fleet). In any case, the Cobra maneuver can be made even without TV on some jets, but the recovery is not as safe so they likely don't do it for safety reasons, but the MiG-35 can probably do it, more so since it's been designed more unstable than its predecessors. There are other maneuvers that do require TV though besides the Cobra, that the MiG-35 will not be able to pull, just like the rest of aircraft without TVC. Glad to help!
@@Airguardian wowwww ! Until finally I can understand what is the problem! Other question (sorry ☺), but the fact that Mig 35 hasn't TV made this aircraft "weak"?, or maybe the Mig 35 hasn''t TV BUT has some other features that can "cover" this weakness?. Sorry for the questions! Thanks a lot airguardian!!!!!
Aircraft design is an effort of reaching compromise solutions. Adding TVC gives some advantages but has a price to it (added complexity and weight, more maintenance, more expensive, etc), you shouldn't think in terms of weak or strong but rather in terms of equilibrium to reach a target or set of requirements. MiG designers probably thought that their jet would be better of without TVC, or that maybe it would sell better... who knows the exact reason?
Meraviglioso.
Awesome skills by the pilot just saying

This is one and only one performance you will ever see.No wonder they call these pilot crazy.

Not the OVT... that was a prototype, only one was made!
MIG 29 is considered super manuverable without thrust vectoring. Does this make it hyper manuverable?
Ehmm... maybe?
I'd rather say it's super maneuverable with TV, and highly maneuverable without.
I beheld Satan as lightning fall from the heavens, morning star, son of the dawn.
This Mig-29 comes complete with Baphomet star and lightning decals and is both as charming and deadly as Satan, as it dances around the heavens! Just an observation.

I was there, great day, some of the best weather I’ve ever seen for an air show and hot as well, some terrific flying, the Red Arrows put on the fullest display I think I’ve ever seen them do, nearly half an hour but when this took off everyone stopped to watch
There's something just visceral about thrust vectoring fighter jets... The show gets to your bones and leaves you with the jaw dropped, staring at the sky in dismay! :)
Si les radars russes sont aussi performants que les radars US, les américains ont quelques soucis à se faire avec leurs F22 et F35 qui sont plus récents et n'ont pourtant pas l'air d'avoir cette manœuvrabilité en combat tournoyant.
The one that steer my eyes to Russia.
SENSACIONAL......
Hombre donde andabas!? Hasta ruso entiendes 😹 Im Presionante! 👍🏼 👍🏼 nunca he ido a un show y esto debe ser de puta madre… un colega me dijo que lo vio allá en Austria y era impresionante ese tail slide (dejarse caer) pq eran las primeras turbinas que permitían ese flujo inverso de aire (!?)…. I love how they say that maneuvers are not important, it's all about stealth, then why did Lockheed try and make F22 as maneuverable as they could, why install cannons on F35,it doesn't make any sense!
